Derpy is a unique character when it comes down to the secondary members of the show cast. She was born not as anything official from the show staff like many background ponies are. Instead, she was mistakenly thought to be out of frame in a particular shot and an animator had given this random background pony some goofy eyes and nothing more.
Of course, if she hadn't been in that shot and hidden as thought we wouldn't be here today talking about her, would we? After that first sighting, the sky was the limit for the grey mare, a complete blank slate for us to tell a story with. And over time, as the creators of the show saw our interest in her, she became our own little easter egg to spot from episode to episode or would have a bit scene that would establish some of her most well-known traits.
She has grown a lot over the years and, at least in my opinion, still serves as a great mascot for the fandom to this day: born from the fandom in the earliest of days and still here today to offer us some cuteness, some goofiness, and of course some muffins on the side.
