Hasbro has dropped a new track titled "Equestria Girls Opening Titles Remix Extended (DJ Pon-3's Version)". According to that title, it's supposed to be an extended re-recording of the 2013 track "Opening Titles (Remix)" from My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, which itself is a remix of the 2010 My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic theme song, which is partially based on the original 1986 My Little Pony theme song.
The title does sort of accurately describe what it is, but I don't know what its intended audience is supposed to be, or why it's being released now. It does have a few new features that the original doesn't have, though.
The original vocals by Rebecca Shoichet (in character as Twilight Sparkle) and Kaylee Johnston have mostly or entirely been removed, and have been replaced with new vocals by an uncredited vocalist. I don't know why they did this. Maybe the intended implication is that this is what DJ Pon-3's voice sounds like?
A lot of the instrumental elements in the new track are sampled from the original remix without much modification. The exceptions are the intro from 0:00 to 0:14, a completely new section from 1:20 to 1:57, a new sound effect at the end, and some subtle instrument additions and mixing changes throughout the track. The new section at 1:20 does have a more modern style than the original track, which was very much a product of its time. It's not clear if anyone who worked on the original remix was involved with "DJ Pon-3's Version".
Incidentally, the credits for both the original remix and "DJ Pon-3's Version" are wrong in multiple ways. Aside from the new version's vocalist and producer(s) being uncredited, neither track's credits include the original writers of the My Little Pony theme song, Anne Bryant and Clifford Klinder. Additionally, since November 2022, the original remix has wrongly been credited to "Sunset Shimmer, Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Apple Jack, Rarity, My Little Pony", because they somehow overwrote the credits for the Equestria Girls soundtrack album with the credits for the Legend of Everfree soundtrack album. To date, Hasbro has very rarely fixed the numerous errors in their MLP music catalog, even though new errors have been introduced each time that the albums have been transferred between different record labels.
Both the new remix and the original "Opening Titles (Remix)" are embedded below.
