If you were the one making the call before G5 came out, would you have decided to detatch G4 from G5 completely? Honestly, I think I would have.
As much as I love G4, I really don't think it adds all that much to G5 having G4 be part of the lore (which probably has a lot to do with licencing issues, but I digress x_x). G4 stood perfectly fine on its own four legs, so I think it's reasonable that G5 could have as well. It would also have saved us all from the headache of trying to reconsile some "interesting things" that have happened in the between years to G5, like why Twilight handled things the way she did, or why Spike just left for the dragon lands and never looked back on pony.
