Celestia back when the show started was very much a Godlike figure to a lot of us when we were watching that first season. We didn't know that much about her other than she was the ruler of Equestria, was Twilight's mentor, and did appear to be benevolent, wise and powerful considering we knew how long she had lived and had the power to move both the sun and moon.
We got to see a bit more of her playful side that season and as seasons went on more of her and Luna's personalities started to be fleshed out. Some for the better and some for the worse (such as never seeming to keep themselves from being defeated by the baddie of the season). Still, she, and especially Luna, are well-loved by the fandom and fanworks continue to be made with her in mind each day.
