The world has changed over the last decade when it comes to animation. We've seen a rise in cartoons of much higher quality, with major studios across the world picking up on the idea that these shows aren't always just for kids anymore.
Personally, I think Friendship is Magic had a big influence on that. I guarantee it has been studied to death by every entertainment company out there for ideas on how to make their own releases more successful. It's not every day your brand you usually only put enough effort to sell toys in suddenly becomes a massive hit.
