Spike actually got a pretty good amount of love in season two. This was going to be his second foray into entertaining us, and I know a few people who were curious about what he was capable of.
He's an interesting character all things considered. There aren't any other dragons in the show that are raised by ponies. The psychological effects that would have on someone are an interesting topic, and something Dragon Quest hoped to answer. His reaction to dragon society really helped build the character, from the lava jumping scene to the rowdy style the others of his species seem to glorify.
In the end, Spike is officially a pony with scales. They even gave him a phoenix pet to show his ascension from Twilight's pet to someone who can take part in the weekly pony play dates.
