MLP Comic Artist Thom Zahler Comes to Free Comic Book Day in Newark, Delaware

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, MLP comic artist Thom Zahler gave away free quick sketches of people’s favorite ponies during Free Comic Book Day at Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, Delaware. Tom Zahler drew and wrote Issue #1 of the My Little Pony Micro-series, which focused on Twilight Sparkle.
Zahler sat in one if the window booths inside Blue Hen Comics, the sunlight shining past a rack of his comics as he sketched ponies like Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle, and Apple Jack. Rapid pencil drawings quickly vanished beneath bold marker lines as he drew the familiar characters.
Several of us Bronies who got sketches from Zahler had a chance to ask him about how he developed the comic. Zahler said that the setting of Issue #1 was based on the Library of Congress. He also said that he changed his original idea for the plot because it was too similar to an episode in the upcoming season.
It took Zahler a few weeks to write and draw the entire comic. He explained that usually it takes him about a month to put a comic together. For this particular book, he was operating under a tighter deadline, so he did not do the colors himself. Instead, Ronda Peterson colored his work.
Issue #1 was his first MLP comic.
Zahler has pitched other MLP ideas to IDW, including a story about Spike. He also pitched one for a “Mars Attack” crossover in which Martians try to invade Ponyville only to discover the power of friendship instead of conquering the local ponies.
