• Toy Review: Funko Molded Doctor Whooves and Fluttershy

Similar to the last round of molded figures, I've grabbed me a set of the new ones to go with my Rainbow and Derpy.   Running with a completely new finish, how do these compare to the other two?  Head on down past the break for my review on Funko's Fluttershy and Doctor Whooves!

I'm starting this one off with The Doctor, because I just finished watching all of the new stuff a few months ago, and it is technically my first piece of Doctor Who merchandise ever.   Does that make me a Whovian? Or maybe I'm a Whoovian.  I doubt the original creators of that word ever thought he would be a horse.

Regardless, this toy is pretty damn amazing overall.  The show likeness with a bonus tie makes me wonder how they dodged trademarks.  It's pretty heavily based on the actual Doctor (I'm assuming the 10th, who is also the best~), and there are variations on the color of his tie if you ordered off the website.  I am not sure if the in-store versions change at all.

This is also the first colt toy that isn't going to end up in my "box of ponies I don't care about".  I never was a fan of the square snouts and tiny tails, but this one pulls it off well enough to surprise me.  The mohawkmane pulls off a suitable level of spikyness, and there aren't a whole lot of manufacturing blemishes.

Plus its a Doctor Who pony, how could I not love this thing?

Another thing I want to point out overall, that I made a note of in my last review, is the boxes these things come in.  I don't know if it is some kind of massive collector taboo, but having completely unsealed holders for these things that look like they have never been opened when re-packaged is really convenient.  The packaging overall is really well done, modifying the MLP logo colors based on whichever pony is stored inside.

Sadly there aren't any neat little Doctor Whooves quotes, descriptions, or TARDIS's anywhere, but I'm sure they are already sneaking around the legal side hard enough as is.

The official Doctor Who website actually posted the thing though, so maybe they are running with flattery as opposed to angry lawyers and ballpoint pens!

Onward to Fluttershy, who is now my favorite of the four molded ponies that have been released so far.  I actually commented on how massive Derpy and Dash's tails were back in my last review,  but as we all know, Fluttershy has tail extensions, so she was guaranteed to win in the long run.

Seriously though, that tail is huge.  The toy in general is pretty heavy, and the polished finish makes it feel much higher in quality overall.

Everything about Fluttershy looks great.  I don't know if "balanced" is the best word to use, but the wing/tail/mane combo makes her feel very... complete in a way.   Where the Doctor Whooves toy is a bit basic being an earth pony with tiny mane/tail, Fluttershy is large and complex.

I was a worried about the new shiny material.  My OCD didn't like the idea that Derpy and Dash would be dull while the Fluttershy and Doctor had that polished and smooth finish.  I got over it, but it would be nice to have consistency across the set.  I would be all for a re-release of the first two with the new style.   As I mentioned earlier, the new material has fewer manufacturer blemishes, which was one thing the last toys suffered from.

Overall, should you buy these? Hell yeah you should.  They took the already awesome molded ponies from before, and upgraded them to an even more epic feel.   We need more like this.  My guess is Twilight will be joining another character for the next set, based on Hot Topic's usual preference for Rainbow, Fluttershy and Twilight in everything else.  Hopefully we will find out soon, considering their release is in June.

If you pick them up in store, you can guarantee the one you want.  It looks like they are still running with a one in twenty four chance at receiving a variant though.  If you want Fluttershy, hit this page, and the Doctor (currently out of stock) is here.
