WE MUST CELEBRATE!!
ReplyDeleteScrew the roundup. I WANT MY EPISODE NOW!
ReplyDeleteYAY
ReplyDeleteOh hey, a roundup I'm actually awake for.
ReplyDeleteooooh, that blog about bronies stories sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'm awake!
ReplyDeleteInfinte energy power me through the night into the day!
ReplyDeleteCant sleep
ReplyDeleteI have muffins and bubble wrap. I'm ready for the new episode.
ReplyDeleteWhere the buck are the Pittsburgh bronies???
ReplyDeleteEgg-head RD is mildly refreshing.
ReplyDeleteI think Tara purposely did all of this Twilight trolling today to raise hype for her episode tomorrow. The two events are definitely connected, if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteEither I'm awake late, or I woke up early. In any case, I'm here and I'm definitely going to be thumbing through what's here. Math ponies for the win!!! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm looking at that Twilight .gif while listening to TheLivingTombstone's remix of Rolling In The Deep
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing
So I am 17, and flip through the channels eager to read one last time the next episode description... I can't find HUB, so I look at the programming, dad removed HUB and many other of my channels TODAY. Guess I won't be watching TV ever again. Anywhere I can watch the episode?
ReplyDeleteWait, Square Enix got involved with Wakfu? x_X When did this happen? I thought it was an Ankama-only project.
ReplyDeleteCELESTIAVERDAMMT WHY IS WONDERCON IN ANAHEIM THIS YEAR *SOB*
ReplyDeleteI DON'T CARE ABOUT CONSTRUCTION AAAAAAAAGH
STUPID UNITED STATES BEING SO HUGE AND CALIFORNIA SO LONG *SOB*
So does anypony want to take a crack at that math problem?
ReplyDeleteOne thing that is bugging me is how to define "crossing" a circle. Does that mean crossing the exact middle of the circle, or some random point on the side (exiting at a distance less than the diameter itself)? Or based on the information given in the question, should this be self-evident?
I'm not a math buff, but this is really annoying me.
@Night Light
ReplyDeletehttp://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/03/streams-and-mare-thons-tonight.html#more
A whole bunch of all night mare-a-thons to watch before the episode airs, and then those places usually stream the new episode as it is broadcast.
Also, I love the pony themed Ghostbuster packs. At first, I was concerned at the lack of a Pinkie Pie one, until I realized that all she needs to do is giggle at them, so she doesn't need one!
@Night_Light Yeah keep your eye on EQD there is a YouTube posting of it usually an hour or so after its aired.
ReplyDelete@Night Light
ReplyDeleteLivestreams. Also, the episodes will be up on YouTube for a few days before they are removed for copyright. Catch them then.
Why do people like the Flim Flam brothers?
ReplyDeleteDat gif, man. Everyone loves it. And I don't care if it added ponies, calculus sux. The only math i need to know is anything + RD = 20% cooler.
ReplyDeleteSo tired... must rest for ponies tomorrow...
@garturo62
ReplyDeleteCan't speak for everypony, but one reason is that they seem like they've been taken directly out of an old musical movie and shoved into Equestria! Musicals are a ton of fun. XD
The first meetup around my area and I can't go because i'm broke :(
ReplyDeleteThose Zagreb bronies are meeting up ALL the time! Now I want to move there.. :(
ReplyDeleteThe first meetup around my area and I can't go because i'm broke :(
ReplyDeleteI will give that dude my soul for the Rainbow Dash Neutron Pack!! Can we make a deal?
ReplyDeleteAlso, new episode is gonna be awesome!

ReplyDeleteAlso, new episode is gonna be awesome!
It should be legal to mow down flash mobs with machine guns.
ReplyDeleteA pony-related question on a math test? At Harvard, no less! That must have been an awesome surprise for all the bronies making that test.
ReplyDeleteI know someponies are going to kill me, but am I the only one who thinks Lauren looks sort of like the singer from Paramore in that Milky Way Pic? Must be an older photo.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know I can't be the only one who misread Wakfu as Waifu Guild. Let me know when that one's up and running.
Not even Rainbow Dash can make me like math.
ReplyDeleteYou can never have too much of our favorite little adorkable purple unicorn. :3
ReplyDeleteI always knew Dash had a dark side. And that dark side is that she absolutely loves those fancy mathematics!
Whoa, Ghostbuster packs colored to the colors of all the ponies. That some pretty epic fan love right there. On both ends. Though I notice the lack of a Pinkie pack.
That Twilight video. I don't even. lol But it's certainly fun to watch and listen to. I also love that gif. <3
Wish I could be at Wondercon. I'd totally go annoy her. Haha.
A flash mob in Kansas City? I've always wondered what it's like to be part of a flash mob. Though I suppose large Brony meets are sorta the same. :P Too bad its way too far for me.
@clarin-ed
ReplyDeleteIt means crossing the edge, not the centre; since the centre for all the circles is (0,0).
Okay, I've worked the Rainbow Dash problem and got 2/5*sqrt(170) - 9/5*sqrt(5). Does my answer agree with anyone else's?
ReplyDeleteUm... I got a REALLY ugly answer for that math problem, so clearly it can't be correct. I musta done something wrong. It doesn't seem like the square root of 1285 would fit well.
ReplyDeleteMay as well put up the whole answer since I worked so hard on it:
ReplyDelete[-11*sqrt(5)+sqrt(1285)]/10
I did it by using right triangles, and proving that the longer length had to happen when Dash crossed the SAME circle twice (otherwise I get a weird negative number for the distance she travelled), which I'm glad because that was my hunch. Then, using three right triangles and a lot of cancelling, I got that number.
When I calculate it, it's slightly smaller than 3*sqrt(5)/5, which is what I was expecting, since eventually it will converge to 1, but still, it looks ugly.
@Clockwork
ReplyDeleteDon't need any calculus for this problem, friend. Just geometry and some algebra.
I'm working on it now. If you want to see my proof, I'll post it on youtube soon.
I must be misreading the math question. If the answer is supposed to be rd goes those units plus the diameter of a circle the answer would be (10+9√5)/5.
ReplyDeleteStill funny to see RD.
@clarin-ed They're talking about a secant line through all the circles. Now let's see if I can get an answer for this...
ReplyDeleteWakfu is not made by Square Enix :O
ReplyDeleteIt's made by a french company called Ankama :D
Wakfu is not made by Square Enix :O
ReplyDeleteIt's made by a french company called Ankama :D
@clarin-ed
ReplyDeleteWell, If RD passed through the same circle the first two times (my hypothesis since 3X(5^(1/2))/5 is so much smaller than 5^(1/2)) that would mean the radius of that first circle is 2, and RD's path passes closest to the origin at (11^(1/2))/2, forming a right triangle with a hypotenuse of 2 and a third side of (5^(1/2))/2.
But then when I try to add in the 3X(5^(1/2))/5 the hypotenuse length is no longer an integer... so I'm stuck.
I guess we can be certain that RD passed through 3 different circles.
Who ya gonna call? GoBus....er... BOAST BUSTERS!
ReplyDelete(Side note: GoBusters are the power rangers sentai, not the ghostbusters sentai...)
@Mike
ReplyDeleteIndeed. The same thing happened to me.
What I did was express the equations of the circles as functions, and assume that RD flies in a path parallel to the x-axis, so that you can express her flight path as a constant function.
You can do this because no matter what direction she travels, you can rotate the image so that she does fly parallel to the x-axis without changing any of the distances.
Once you do this, you have to express the intersections of her flight path and the three circles as three equations with three unknowns.
The unknowns are: the constant term at which RD flies, the radius of the first circle (since the other two are simply r+1 and r+2) and the x-value of the first intersection (since the other two will simply be x+rt5 and x+(8/3)rt5)
Getting these, you can solve for the intersection of her flight path and the FOURTH circle, yielding the distance.
I am currently checking the value I obtained.
If I understand the math problem correctly, then there's circles with their diameters increasing by 2. Which means that if you were moving to the origin, you would have to move 1 unit to get to the next circle.
ReplyDeleteNow Im going to assume that Rainbow Dash is moving towards the origin, because her direction is not stated in the problem. And whether or not she's on an axis or not does not matter if she's moving toward the origin because the difference in circle radii would be the same.
She moved a total of 4.024 units, but after crossing that first circle after 0.447 units, she moved 3.577 units. Which means she has another 0.423 units to move before crossing another circle.
That's what I think the answer is, if I am understanding the problem correctly. That is if she is moving towards the origin, if she's not and is moving at some angle or parallel to an axis, then I think I'd need more information to solve it. I'm no Harvard MIT student, only a UC MET student, but it's still awesome to see ponies work their way into math problems, haha.
I found the website with the answers.
ReplyDeletehttp://web.mit.edu/hmmt/www/datafiles/solutions/2012/guts.pdf
I feel dumb now. You just need to consider distances from the origin to the intersections, then a little trig and cosine rule and you're done.
I'm depressed now. I'm gonna eat a sandwich.
Rainbow Dash INVADED MATH???....yeah truly Egghead
ReplyDeleteGosh.... no meetup in NYC T_T
ReplyDeleteI don't think this makes RD an egghead but rather a very precise flier. What's more is that the professors at MIT are bronies ^.^
ReplyDeleteI wish I still lived in Toronto to get to that meetup ;_; but now I'm in brony-free Maine.
ReplyDeleteLOLOLOLOL Rainbow Dash
ReplyDeleteI'm cracking up at the Harvard math thing.
ReplyDelete@AkihiroFR Square Enix is handling the North American, division, I think. Either way, they're working with Ankama on this one.
ReplyDelete-Moonlight Ballad, Bard of Equestria
What is going on with eBay these days? I'm all for merch, but boxer shorts is just going too far.
ReplyDelete@Christine
ReplyDeleteYOu're not the only who feels that way. But I'm more angry than sad. There's a ton of places they could have held it at the Bay Area (the Moscone Center is being renovated due what I'm assuming is construction of the new subway tunnel)! But no! they had to put in Southern California where I'm sure it's going to crash and burn.
hehe Twilights head is bobbing in time with the music I am listening to :3
ReplyDelete@Ty
ReplyDeleteHa, yes! I did it right!
Thanks for pointing out the solution.

ReplyDeleteSometimes, I think Twilight might be staring into our souls and telling us to hug our screens.
ReplyDeleteWWell, I got 1.129414736... or (2√755-17√5)/15 in the math problem. Close enough to the others, I guess.
ReplyDeleteSmaller circle's radius is definitely 2.
Here's how I did it (pretty messy, by the way).
that gif makes my heart happy.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap Harvard?!?
ReplyDeleteDAMMIT!
ReplyDelete...
I was on the right track and found out I added when I was supposed to subtract when I tried to prove that she had to cross the same circle twice (turns out now I proved that she doesn't). I just fixed it and got the right answer.
I got the same circles as the answers: she crosses n = 3, 4, and 5, and all that's left is to find when she crosses n = 6, which is not too bad.
@Ajin
ReplyDeleteThat's right.
Dude, I see Derpy in the ghostbuster dude's garage.
ReplyDeleteIf you're interested in joining the Omaha meet up group, we're Nebraska Bronies (MLP:FiM) on facebook!! :)
ReplyDeleteThe Omaha meetup was fun! I filmed the whole thing! My hands aren't the steadiest, but I captured some footage.
ReplyDeleteI was at the Omaha meetup. Good times, good times.
ReplyDeleteWho you gonna call? PONY BUSTERS!!
ReplyDeleteThere was an Omaha meetup? I like... live there. How did I miss that? Geh. :|
ReplyDeleteYay! Central California meetup! :D
ReplyDeleteGettin' Faust's aut-o-graph! Getting Faust's aut-o-graph!
ReplyDeleteBtw NorCal bronies I'm making the drive down just for the con. U jelly? :D
Awww...! Twilight Sparkle is being adorable! And... she's backwards. Huh.
ReplyDeleteDat Gif
ReplyDeleteThe Brony story blog is an excellent idea. Maybe people could learn to understand us better if we can have the chance to tell our stories. I know I've got an interesting one.
ReplyDeleteAs the guy who wrote the math problem and got it put on the test, I must say it feels quite strange to see this on EQD. Amusing, too. I guess I should have figured that it was completely reasonable for this to happen, although the tournament did take place about a month ago.
ReplyDeleteI feel the need to say that the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament is completely student-run, so sorry, there's no brony professors at either university, as far as I'm aware. Also, I'm an MIT student, so I'm going to clearly feel a little miffed when people are like "OMG HARVARD SO COOL." :P
Um, the answer is (2sqrt(170) - 9sqrt(5))/5, if that's still being contested. I didn't imagine the wording could be that confusing, but hey, it's hard to edit what you write, right? By crossing, I definitely meant intersecting the boundary of the circle, not the center. (Heck, all the circles have the same center!)
I also managed to get in two other (easier) pony-referencing problems on the test: one about Luna arranging socks, and another about Big Mac filling barrels of cider (although I just called him "Mac" in the problem... calling him "Big Mac" or "Macintosh" would reference other things a bit too much, I felt).
Im reading some answers that people are leaving in the comments and.....the answers hurt my thinker box more than the question
ReplyDeleteYay! Twilight gets an episode! Hopefully we get another Rarity episode in the future too n.n
ReplyDeleteIf only a question like that was in the math competition I went to today. :/
ReplyDeletei hope i get another chance at an episode @TheRuggedBrony 9_6
ReplyDeleteWhoa. Rainbow Dash in a mathhead problem.
ReplyDeleteAnd we need a Galaxy Girls cartoon.
I'm not joking around this, but if you hear the song "K" from "Bump of chicken", twilight's head bob in perfect synchronization to the Drums :D
ReplyDeleteI demand similar animated gifs of the other characters.
ReplyDeleteMan, if I had the money and equipment I would go -banzai- with a Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls series.
ReplyDeleteThere should be a Fort Collins Colorado meet.
ReplyDelete@thingsclamsays
ReplyDeletedude; you are awesome. If only you could get pony problems on the TCAP tests.
