ReplyDeleteWait, what? Crossing ponies with Myamoto Musashi?
ReplyDeleteFOR REAL?
...I've got nothin'
AWWWW SHIT SON! L5R? I'M DOWN!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine the artwork for some Scorpion Clan ponies hahahahaha!!!!
"Taint" in the tags... Hoping it meant "tainted."
ReplyDeleteBeen a while since I've read The Book Of Five Rings. Might have to take a look at this.
ReplyDeleteGrimdark? Yay!
ReplyDeleteAdventure? Me gusta!
Crossover with some silly bullshit? WHYYYYYY?!?!?!?!
MLP:FiM has a wonderful word, easy to be expanded coherently in any imaginable direction to suit every author but people spawn crossovers as if there was a point in that :/ Why waste time on a duplicate/parody/plagiarism when we can just go for the real, original stuff? Srsly.
Wow, I never realized how well the Mane Six map to the L5R clans.
ReplyDeleteNot to be completely negative:
ReplyDeleteNice pic. Especially everything behind that humanized pony :]
@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteAh, I knew I couldn't write something that everyony would like.
I understand your point, yet I don't consider this story of mine a "Waste of time". I consider it more as a tribute to two of my favourite worlds (Legend of the Five Rings and My Little Pony) and try to mix both worlds and see how everything evolves. I am quite satisfied with the final result, considering that both worlds were almost polar opposites. The blending has been satisfying and simplified to allow non-fans of the crossover world to enjoy the story.
A toast to such a honest feedback. And thanks for the compliment, credit goes to Ponibboru :P
@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteOdd, how I don't see this complaint against Fallout: Equestria all that often.
So if crossover=duplicate/parody/plagarism, then Marvel vs. Capcom is horrible, Kingdom Hearts is horrible, Dissidia is horrible, Super Robot Wars is horrible---you see where I'm going with this?
Not every crossover is a search-replace with ponies.
Oh wait, seems I confused Book of Five Rings (which is beyond your usual crossover range) with some card game. Dang, I thought I was going to check this out.
ReplyDeleteOh well, lets cross ponies with Shigurui (or whole Suruga-Jo Gozen-Jiai). That will be great, right? Right?
There's a mirror for this on FimFic

ReplyDeleteTo its credit, the Legend of the Five Rings card and role-playing games are indeed based on the book itself, with a bit more fantasy thrown in. Don't discount them just because they are games; the stories spun from the franchise are just as good as the original, and can stand next to it easily (seeing as they are a tribute to the work and all).
I enjoyed how each of the Mane Six exhibited traits of each of the clans, with Rarity in particular combining Crane and Scorpion (a scary combination indeed), while the rest pretty much felt right with how they would have been portrayed in Rokugan. Pinkie Pie's clan being a rather celebration-happy version of the Dragon Clan was a interesting twist. I chuckled at that one.
Looking forward to more of this. Looks like I get to add yest another good story to the watch and read list.

ReplyDeleteFIVE RING F*CK YEAH!

ReplyDeleteLet me guess
ReplyDeleteApplejack : Lion
Rainbow Dash: Crab
Rarity: Crane
Twilight: Phoenix
Fluttershy: Unicorn
And as always we, poor and humble people of Scorpion clan will be treated unfairly...
By the way we need 7th sea cross-over - anybody remebers that?
ReplyDelete@Path Finder Oh, an interesting perspective. But I'm afraid that comparing them to the existing clans is harder than it looks. You may want to consider them as mixtures of different families.
ReplyDeleteI based the idea of the mane six in certain clan families:
Applejack: Hida and Matsu
Rainboe Dash: Hiruma and Moto
Rarity: Doji and Bayushi
Twilight: Isawa and Ikoma
Fluttershy: Utaku (horsebreeders) and Yoritomo (stormriders), if you want to focus on the families whose goals are taming horses and orochi respectively.
Pinkie: Togashi (I liked the idea of Pinkie as a Dragon because her twitches made me picture her as a seer or prophet, which is quite common among the Dragon Clan)
But, as I mentioned, this was only a way to make my research easier. Because of the modifications and simplified version of the story, there's a moment when I just stopped looking at the story's clans as the original Great Clans as soon as I filled all the blanks concerning the clan's roles.
By the way, glad to see there are more L5R fans among the brony community that I thought possible ^^.

ReplyDeleteI didn't read it yet, but I will over the weekend. And I forgot about Pinkie - the dragon would be my choice as well - I even like them but sometimes they can be really annoying. 2 of my friends who played as dragons and spoke in rhymes most of the time, could drive even me, patient Scorpion, barking mad. Just like Pinkie they can be very random. It has been long time (for the last coouple of years played 7th sea/ Call of Cthulhu)so I don't recall families, but I belive in that your choice is proper.
SAMURAI PONIES FTW
ReplyDelete@Simon o'Sullivan
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had pretty much seen AJ as Crab Clan easily. Twilight I saw a Pheonix all the way, and Fluttershy actually got me to thinking which clan she would map to until you started mentioning the peasants. That scene reminded me of some of the artwork of Lion Clan holdings, and I realized she'd be a rather intriguing Lion Clan analogue. Rainbow Dash was easily Unicorn Clan, as ironic as that statement is.
Ah poor Trixie. As soon as I saw that she had become the High Summoner through her usual methods, I pegged her as (eventual) maho-tsukai on the spot. I'm not even gonna bother to care about spoiling that for anyone; it's so blatantly obvious to see what's gonna happen to her. That's gonna come back and bite Lord Sparkle in the flank, hard. Spike being the Lore Champion, though, is pretty awesome.
This is good stuff. I hope you keep it up. I've never been a fan of good fics just falling by the wayside because authors get discouraged and/or distracted. Real Life™ can throw curve balls and all, I understand that, but this is well worth pursuing. Good job.
Also: I did feel there was a solid hint of Lion Clan in Applejack as well. It actually felt like it was an amalgam of Crab and Lion at the wall more than anything.
ReplyDeleteWHAT? Ponies and L5R?
ReplyDeleteI'm totally down for this.
Hida AppleJack
ReplyDeleteMatsu Fluttershy (I know this will get some argument)
Togashi Pinky Pie OR Kitsune Pinky Pie
Otaku Rainbow dash
Bayushi Rarity (No mask)
Otomo Twilight Sparkle
Spike (Part of the Dragon clan)
This is how I see the lay out of the main cast without using multiple familys
OMG L5R PONIES YOU SIR (OR MADAM) I AM IN LOVE WITH.I will be reading the hay out of these once I get finished with past sins. I play Lion clan. I love L5R. One of the only things I love more is ponies. This makes me so happy you have no clue.
ReplyDeleteOh my, i must read this.
ReplyDeleteL5R PONIES!!!!!!!!!!!! Must Read.

ReplyDeleteFinished reading last night, I have to say great start. Now all I need is to find a story where the Main 6 find themselves in Rokugan and I can die happy.
ReplyDeleteSimon o'Sullivan: As a huge L5R fan (I have all the 3rd and 4th edition books, several diferent decks and have spent more time than is probably healthy helping out on the wiki) I like how you've blended the two settings, you have managed to maintain the feel of both settings which is quite the feat. Out of curiosity, are the Elemental Dragons present? What about fortunes? Keep up the good work.
@Macilnar I appreciate receiving such a helpful and specidic feedback.
ReplyDeleteI am not the one who likes to spoil, but I have to admit that yes, cosmology is something I've been wondering about, including the Elemental Dragons and Lord Moon/Lady Sun. Fortunes are something they pray, maybe just giving them a ponified name in order to simplify it. Luckily, in case I end up introducing the Elemental Dragons, their names are easy (their name is the element they embody, so I'll be fine).
For the fans and readers who follow the story, I'll say that updates will take long. Mainly because, as you've noticed, my chapters are long and, still lacking a decent writing mastery, I'll send them to proofread and review in order to keep the quality. I'll try to get the next chapter as soon as I can.
@Simon o'Sullivan You wouldn't have change the names of the 7 Fortunes, only the lesser ones, all you would need to do is ponify their apperence.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in the case of Lord Moon/Lady Sun you could just have Luna/Celestia and instead of Nothing corrupting Lord Moon you have Nightmare corrupting Luna (although really in the case of Nothing/Nightmare you really would only have to change the name), that and insted of being killed Luna was saved.
ReplyDelete@Macilnar Good news, Chapter 2 is halfway done (expect it to be a long one as usual).
ReplyDeleteAbout the 7 Fortunes, because of their lack of direct appearance, I'm not really sure about what to do with them, maybe just go like "Oh, great Fortune of whatever, blah blah blah" (they may exist and all of that, but not much more for now).
I like allowing myself some artistic license with this crossover (that's, for example, why I softened a bit all the "You insulted me, I challenge you!" in order to avoid having half of Ponyville dead by the end of chapter 3), so you'll find a bit of crazy mixtures of things that won't be "100% L5R accurate" (I'm sure L5R fans noticed that the "Day of Thunder" as it's mentioned is far from accurate), but sometimes I consider that a little bit of historical accuracy can be sacrificed to make a story better and enjoyable (also, avoiding making copy-paste of events in order to avoid expectability from fans... I think that word doesn't exist, but you get the point).
Anyways, back to writing.
@Simon o'Sullivan I expect there would be quite a few differences and as I said before I like how you've been handling the crossover. Glad to hear chapter is so far along.
ReplyDeleteThat...
ReplyDeleteThat is not good.
