Oh god, the poor EQD mailbox. Quite a few people sent this over to us. Apparently someone in the UK division of Hasbro has confirmed that Derpy is here to stay, via e-mail. It is a bit odd that we would find out this way (we have dug around everywhere without any luck, we seriously only have this screenshot to go off of), so this is going to roll with a rumor tag until we have something more concrete than random_UK_Hasbro employee.
Until then though, I guess we can celebrate! Hooray for Derpy.
Thanks to everyone that submit it! I wont be able to respond to all of these, but we love you anyway.

YAY~
ReplyDeleteHuzzah!
ReplyDeleteWOOP WOOP
ReplyDeleteIt only proves they won't change her name. We still don't know if she will remain unedited in the show, or if The Last Roundup will air on The Hub again. But the victory is closer at least!
ReplyDeleteDerpy rocks, Woohoo
ReplyDeleteLET'S GET A MUFFIN THEN!
ReplyDeleteyay?
ReplyDeleteGO derpy, It's a small victory, but still worth celebrating!
ReplyDeleteMuffins for all!
Alright! :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteI hope this is true so we can celebrate with muffins for everyone
ReplyDeleteFucking finally, something official-looking.
ReplyDeleteHopefully fans will stop making asses out of themselves now.
The joy has been doubled!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope this is true! -crosses fingers-
ReplyDeleteI pray this is true...
ReplyDeleteto hasbro "you rock!, woohoo!"
ReplyDeleteAt this point I'm more upset that I can't stream "The Last Roundup" over the internet. I payed for that episode and the ability to stream it, but now if I want to watch it I have to turn on my PC so that I can stream my local copy to my Apple TV. It's annoying that I can watch every other episode by internet steaming except for that one.
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for the episode to appear again on the Hub and/or return to iTunes before declaring victory, but the news over the past few days has certainly been encouraging.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me happy. But not in my pants.
ReplyDelete... Ok, in my pants.
Not really sure what to make of this. I just saw this on Twitter. If this is the case, yay! But I need something just a little more concrete.
ReplyDelete@mattwhite924
ReplyDeleteIf you paid for the ability to stream it and you can't, I'd think that would be a good reason to send an email to Apple about it. Maybe they'll actually respond to a paying customer.
I was one of the people who submitted the pic.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little skeptical because the letter says "My Little Pony Range"... whatever that is.
But if this is in fact true, then huzzah!
=D
Posted news 6 minutes before EqD, feels good man.
ReplyDeleteMaking muffins to celebrate.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI think I might just have to do that. I'll let everyone know if they give me any useful information about why it was taken down in the first place.
Hmmm... well then, it sounds like this is all stemming from an imperfect storm of coincidences, namely the few complainers and the episode in question disappearing from iTunes. Maybe it's simply a system glitch for iTunes, because Read It And Weep hasn't been put up yet (new episodes usually are made available that night or the following night). If this is indeed true, I'm, needless to say, very happy about it... but hope this iTunes issue gets resolved soon. I mean, I got my episode (Season Pass holder), but others will obviously want it too... and the new one.
ReplyDeleteThe eyes of bronykind are watching you, iTunes. Your move.
Time to celebrate!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=fAAf8PUdSeI#t=51s
It sounds good and I hope its true. I really do.
ReplyDeleteBut its so easy to fudge these. I am hoping for more letters to prove its true.
People running around screaming in panic were hilarious, pathetic but hilarious :D
ReplyDeleteYay for Rory. Congrats on making it to EqD.
ReplyDeleteHooray!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHere's my theory: Hasbro knows that most bronies are not going to be interested in the upcoming DVD "freindship express" or at least not in numbers they like. Bronies would want full season dvds and would pass on a multi episode in no particular order one.
ReplyDeleteOk how to get them to buy? Put a sonic rainboom of a scene in an episode (derpy speaks) and put said episode on the dvd, even though it aired for the first time only a month or so prior to the dvd release. Fan some contraversy about the episode or make it seem like youre caving to the haters (like messing with we love fine or getting the episode off itunes).
I thought it was odd that the derpy episode was on the dvd so fast, despite it only being a month old from airdate. Now it makes sense. If we think the episode will be altered or censored, many of us would be willing to snap up the dvd with the unaltered episode since they supposedly cant recall them. This could be genius manipulative marketing on hasbro's part to also maybe test the waters on how many bronies would buy dvds in order to put out a season boxset.
Tinfoil hat, please.
So everyone's panic was completely pointless...
ReplyDeleteYou know, someone said that the pontential Rumor of Derpy could make the Friendship Express DVD a collectors treasure being the only version to have Derpy in it. So everyone would buy it. If that was the case, that would be the most out-there marketing tactic I've seen. But if it means the DVD's sold like crazy it would be a win in the long because it would mean people like the show and they will continue making it and possibly bring out more DVD's in the future.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Derpy is still going to carry on for at least a week or 2 or more. I wished they would just air Last Roundup again to dispel all issues, but it's not scheduled in these next two weeks (But then again, Super Speedy Cider Squeezy isn't either. It's the Mare-A-Thon next week, then after A Friend in Deed they are repeating Read it and Weep.)
This has hardly any authoritative merit at all. It proves about as much as a photo of a hand written document saying the same. E-mails are notoriously easy to craft.
ReplyDeletenot relaxing until s2e14 is back on itunes, unedited. Also, s2e16 hasn't turned up yet either; all other episodes so far this season have turned up either sunday or monday 08:30-ish GMT.
ReplyDeleteSo I still reckon this is an iTunes snafu rather than a hasbro/hub one, but it will be relaxing to see it resolved. It certainly doesn't help when trying to persuade people to support the show that way.
It's understandable that bronies panic when a little slice of their perfect place is threatened. Derpy became the mascot for the brony community and she is the most universally loved among all ponies and we're VERY protective of her. Here's hoping this is 100% accurate.
ReplyDelete@NinjaGalad
ReplyDeleteThe DVD was slated to have The Last Roundup on it even before the episode was announced/given a synopsis.
You guys have been making an issue out of nothing. there was never a threat at all, just a bunch of vaguely related circumstances that you've been connecting out of paranoia. Derpy was never in danger dammit.
ReplyDeleteHi! I am Mub. I know Rory. Now you may be wondering the legitimacy of the email, are you not? Well here you go: http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq119/roza_supreme/httpssnt144maillivecommailGetMessageSourceaspxmsgid5724e024-50dd-11e1-9700-00237de3f160folderid00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001-172008.png
ReplyDeleteThis is the source of the email.
Here's the link though I seem to be unable to open it: https://snt144.mail.live.com/mail/GetMessageSource.aspx?msgid=5724e024-50dd-11e1-9700-00237de3f160&folderid=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001
Cheers.
IMO we should stop reporting on this incident until it is entirely concluded. There is far too much conflicting information at the moment.
ReplyDeleteYes but this is Hasbro UK. They also emailed me a while back to say that they had no plans whatsoever to release any of the blind bag ponies over here at all, definately not.
ReplyDeleteAnd then they did.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Mub That doesn't prove anything more than the original screenshot, which doesn't really prove anything at all.
ReplyDeleteHeh heh, called it! I don't care if it's just a rumor. I'm calling it and I ain't changing my mind. Three cheers for Derpy!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@NinjaGaladDarn right, mhm mhm.
ReplyDeleteWe don't know for the US though. It could be the UK/European copyrights are okay
ReplyDeleteI heard there was a dispute with a clothing manufanufacturer that claimed they pwned the ter, "Derp."
I will wait and see when we receive confirmation in the US
-JediPony
Thank you [email protected]. This seems very legit.
ReplyDelete@Blueshift
ReplyDeleteLegitimacy discussions aside, in the consumer relations world "no plans" is a far shout from "we can confirm that we are not"
No plans is boilerplate for "We don't know/haven't decided yet".
I still think the entire thing was a rumor gone out of control and there was nothing to worry about in the first place.
ReplyDeleteBut this is just my view on it.
@xarg Actually, you cannot edit the source, if I am correct. You can mask emails but the source won't change it. I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteDerpy must stay, and will stay!
ReplyDeleteyea
ReplyDeleteDerpy don't leave us!
ReplyDeletehere is hoping that a few bad apples didn't ruin or thrash the possibility of Derpy being a recurring character, however minor or amusing or 'show out to the fandom' she might have been.
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence with this one. Hopefully we cam get something official out there. I really don't like using the rumor tag.
ReplyDeleteHUZZAH!
ReplyDeleteAlthough at this point the iTunes take down still doesn't make any sense. This whole thing from day one has been quite peculiar.
It has revealed one thing though, bronies sure get emotionally charged when you mess with their favorite ponies.
@Loupgarou
ReplyDelete1. There's a small but vocal outcry against Derpy's scene in "The Last Roundup".
2. A few days later, the episode disappears from iTunes, no reason given; it's later confirmed to be a deliberate takedown, not a system glitch.
3. Later in the week, it's reported that Hasbro is pressuring WeLoveFine to remove Derpy merchandise, and much of it gets renamed.
4. "The Last Roundup" has still not been broadcast on the Hub after its debut weekend, being skipped over a couple of times when it should have been scheduled to air.
There's been a lot of panicky overreaction going on, but to say those events are nothing but coincidences is, I think, an overreaction in the other direction.
@Mub
ReplyDeleteActually, editing the source is as simple as copypasting it into notepad before taking the screenshot. In it's current state the source has no integrity value and the received-headers could be from any other e-mail message or completely made up.
Derpy made us feel better!!! ^_^
ReplyDelete@xarg I am pretty sure hotmail would give you an uneditable source. But I don't use hotmail. So I can't really comment.
ReplyDelete@The_A_Drain
ReplyDeleteIf this screenshot is to be believed, they said they aren't changing the name Derpy.
@Mub It doesn't matter who the source is from, there are over 9000 addons that allow you to edit the source of a web age for Firefox alone.
ReplyDeleteIts still nothing concrete.
ReplyDeleteBut im happy EQD posted this, Feel a bit better now :)
Well, I'm obviously skeptical about the source and all, but this is good to hear, I suppose. I can't say I was too worried about this whole fiasco to begin with, but even if this is partially true we can hopefully get some concrete information soon and put this all behind us.
ReplyDeleteSo when terrible stuff's going around, EqD forgets the rumor tag, but then when there's good news, it's suddenly back?
ReplyDeleteOh, ok, I see how it is. XD
lol, we're all worry-warts, pardon my outdated expression.
Hysteria, hysteria everywhere!
ReplyDelete@Mike
ReplyDeleteOh the irony))
Also, "worry-warts" is a way too tame for full-retard RAEGE and hatemail from bronies.
And yes, all because of rumors.
I know it's silly but I love Derpy and even laughably small chances that she might be canned make me sad.
ReplyDeleteSo hooray for Derpy!
Love you.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteThis guy has it right.
The thing is, I don't think it's panicking but mostly due to uncertainty and lack of information. If there were actually some kind of confirmation about this whole situation, then no one would be going crazy over the mysterious take down of the episode. This email doesn't confirm much and I would rather see something from Hasbro/studio B.
@Joe
ReplyDeleteExactly. This would have been somewhat planned in advance. It may have started by simply making sure a brony-favorite pony was featured on the DVD to encourage them to buy it. The contraversy could have been a happy occurance they didnt forsee, but only increases the demand for the dvd.
We might be able to see if this is the case if the matter is quietly resolved and undone after the DVD drops and it sells nicely.
Oh and to feed the rumor mill, on comcast on demand, the derpy episode just went up. Its fully intact.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDelete1.So there's a small but vocal outcry over everything. And personally, though i like Derpy i do think it's silly how some people won't admit that 'derpy', to a non-brony, could have mentally-ill connotations. The amount of anti-derpy was the same as anti-any other character. Such is the nature of a large fandom.
2.This is the only thing that got me suspicious at all, but we had no reason to assume anything connected to a bit character. I have no idea why, but neither does anyone.
3.Hasbro didn't pressure WeLoveFine, all we know was that WeLoveFine was changing names of some derpy stuff. But that all went back in a few days. Perhaps i missed something, but i never saw things suggesting Hasbro was involved there at all.
4. I didn't know about that, but surely other episodes have taken awhile to be re-run.
So yes, alltogether maybe it'd have been worth one post, but not the crazy campaign that's been going on. And seeing how Ashliegh Ball was joking about it, i doubt actors would be joking about something that was really happening.
I wouldn't trust random Hasbro UK members with answers to questions; they gave a completely bogus answer to a question about Transformers Prime's continuity last year, and Hasbro US actually had to issue a retraction to correct it.
ReplyDeleteIm glad that Hasbro is doing its best to stand by the fans. I love Derpy shes just so awesome.
ReplyDeleteAfter this blows over we should go after hasbro to not put this show out to pasture after 65 episodes. Thats the real threat.
ReplyDeleteMy Little Pony 'range'... sooo are we getting a Derpy toy too? I was wondering that with the English translation of the German toy fair write up, in the comments the pony who went said there was some news we'd want to know but he/she can't tell us until a release date is finalised...
ReplyDeleteSo it looks like we have a small victory so far
ReplyDeleteGood morning. Less than six days ago, bronies from here joined others from around the world, launching the largest battle in the history of Bronykind. "Bronykind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We aren't consumed by our petty differences anymore. We were united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Sixth of Feburary, the day America was recognized by France as a republic, and we have once again fought and protected the independence of something... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from political correction. We fought for Derpy's right to live. To exist. And we won we the day, the Sixth of February will no longer be known as an New Zealand holiday, but as the day the Brony world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today, we celebrate our Inderpendence Day!
ReplyDeletePresumably this is one of the same UK Hasbro employees that permit Boomerang to think each season is 13 episodes long.
ReplyDelete@Nick's Blog
ReplyDeleteShut the fuck up. You sound like a retard celebrating overreaction TO NOTHING.
Eh, I'm skeptical. Plus, it's "supposedly" from a random Hasbro employee from the UK division. I highly doubt all Hasbro employees, especially lower ranking ones in the UK, would truly know the answer to that question. Though it says it's from Customer Affairs at least. But unsure on it's validity.
ReplyDelete@Nick's Blog
ReplyDeleteOh would you stop that? They were never planning to take Derpy in the first place. Try having a little more faith in the team that provides us this awesome show. Studio B AND Hasbro have proven that they listen and care about us. Maybe we should start returning some of that care.
@Something To Quack About Speaking of overreacting...
ReplyDeleteLove Derpy!
ReplyDeleteI really hope this is real.
ReplyDelete@Railgun Ah man, I've had faith in Studio B since the beginning. I'm just happy, that's all. If anything, I was hoping to be called "unoriginal", considering that I ripped the speech from ID4. I had that one lined up just for this day.
ReplyDelete@IkkouSoryu
ReplyDeleteNah, Worry-warts is the right amount of tame: certainly not too much.
lol, stop right there, flame-fanner.
I'm taking this with a huge grain of salt (By Celestia I'm thirsty now), but I'm not going to be a pessimist about this either. Could be a good sign.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY! =D
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I haven't been able to get out of my mind this past week is the whole situation of Derpy. As far as I've understood, some people are upset because the word "Derpy" sounds condescending due to her condition. Now of course I can understand that would be bad if kids that ONLY watch the show would start calling each other names and such.
On the other hoof, if you ONLY watched the show, you wouldn't even know of the whole Derpy Hooves phenomenon that is pretty much internet based. You would just see that funny looking mare in the background of pretty much every episode. But if you'd then check out the internet you would become aware of the Derpy hype, but then you would also IMO become aware of how unquestionably loved she is and that she almost never is spoken of in bad or mean ways.
This, I think would only help to wash the negativism out of the word "Derpy" making it only less mean. Uh, but what do I know? It's just my thought about the whole thing.
Well, all in al there was a lot of overreacting.
ReplyDeleteBut the worst overreactions of all were the people overreacting about others overreacting.
Sure the panic was pointless, but haven't we learned anything from Lesson Zero?
If your friends in the brony community are troubled you should be somewhat sympathetic and help them get out of a panic.
Even if they're panicked for no good reason.
Insulting your fellow bronies or comparing them to sonic fans is just not cool.
The ones that made the biggest fools of themselves in my opinion are the ones that belittled and insulted their fellow bronies.
Next time one of us goes into a panic regardless of the reason.
Let's try hugs and comfort, not insults.
Sure,the name stays derpy, but she will never be in any other episode, and all previous episodes will get remastered and replace appearances of derpy with a different pony
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it was a copyright/trademark issue.
ReplyDeleteIf the episode returns to iTunes, without any edits, we can asume it was perfectly that. I really doubt Hasbro, as of now, will remove something just because a loud minority complained. They know better. If they listened to those minorities, they wouldn't be as wealthy as they are.
But will she ever speak again?
ReplyDeleteMe = Happy!
ReplyDeleteTo hell with Yamino's condescending stance on her crusade on the word "derp" itself. She was wrong is all flank-hurt about it.
ReplyDeleteSO wait, does that mean We Love Fine lied to everyone in the brony community JUST to get some derpy clothing sales out of it? If so that just sucks, and dirty of them.
ReplyDeleteI seriously doubt it.
ReplyDelete@NinjaGalad GENIUS.
ReplyDelete@Killsteal_Wolf You've got the right idea, too.
@NinjaGalad The fact that Comcast's OnDemand has the unedited episode is good news!
@Surprise Pie-Anderson Ah, yes. That is the question!
@DCJoeDog You know, just like Hasbro possibly creating more demand for the upcoming DVD, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of WeLoveFine changing Derpy merchandise names temporarily to increase sales.
And what the heck is "My Little Pony Range"?
@NinjaGalad
ReplyDelete*Gives tinfoil hat to NinjaGalad*
Personally, I think this was just a name trademark issue that was sorted out in Derpy's favor. That seems to be a logical explanation given the facts.
#1 The Last Roundup is taken down from iTunes.
#2 The name "Derpy" is removed from Welovefine only to return a few days later.
#3 The Last Roundup remains available on the Hubrowld website as well as the official My Little Pony website.
#4 The Last Roundup becomes available on demand on various home cable television services like Verizon Fios and Comcast after the events of the previous three points.
Hasbro may have been temporarily removing access to the name "Derpy" until they secured a trademark for it.
I wish people would get over this ridiculous argument over Derpy's name. I guess the trolls have to cause at least one problem.
ReplyDelete@Jordan
ReplyDelete"My Little Pony Range" most likely means the range of products they sell. Basically anything related to My Little Pony.
@MyBoyJ
ReplyDelete*Hubworld.
Phew! Everything is fine once again
ReplyDelete@Loupgarou
ReplyDeleteOn #3, derpyhoovesnews.com reported that it was Hasbro pressuring WLF. Whether you're going to believe that is going to depend on whether you believe DHN and their unnamed source at WLF, but that is what they reported.
On #4, the Hub shows the episodes in order during the week. This week on Wednesday after "Baby Cakes", when they would normally be showing "The Last Roundup", they're broadcasting "The Staremaster" instead. Someone has mentioned that "The Last Roundup" was also originally scheduled for sometime last week but not shown, but I can't confirm that beyond remembering that claim.
Anyway, all this is certainly not proof that Derpy was in danger of being renamed/edited out/dropped quietly to never be used again, but it seems to indicate something unusual was going on behind the scenes, and fearing that Derpy was in danger seems at least somewhat reasonable. Which really didn't justify the more panicky posts and fanart, and especially didn't justify the attacks on those complaining about Derpy. Given what's happened since then, this is looking more like a rights issue, but we still don't really know.
So what's taking iTunes so long? Not a huge deal really, but still somewhat vexing.
ReplyDeleteIm agreeing with the consensus which is the belief that its a rights issue. The episode I believe is still up on Hubworld and it is still showing on Hasbro's website.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13 And by the way, I agree with your statement completely. Was there an overly emotional response? Yeah, but there were a bunch of weird things going on all at once, and fans got concerned. What we mostly did in response is to send Hasbro etc. a bunch of supportive mail. I believe most of that mail was relatively sane, as well. There was a little bit of trash talk aimed in the direction of anyone who complained to the show's creators, but overall, I see nothing worth passing insults over.
ReplyDeleteThank God!!! I really hope it's true!
ReplyDelete@DCJoeDog
ReplyDeleteAd hominem attacks are not exactly a brony-like thing to do; be the bigger man and let it go.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI've been continuously laughing heavily at all this hysteria. And people say Lesson Zero is unrealistic. Everypony needs to learn a lesson about over reacting.
ReplyDeleteAnd iTunes, you want to talk about them about iTunes check out this factoid: for weeks they had two episode 11s listed.
Now sure Hearth's Warming Eve aired out of order and they aren't numbered, but in watching iTunes you would find the episode first listed at 13 (no 11 or 12) then 11, then both it and Family Appreciation Day listed as 11 since the latter was released until just last week. And now they are roughly a day late releasing Read it and Weep.
Nevermind the releases infamous color issue on our only watermark free ponyvideo source.
ITUNES IS CLEARLY NOT A WELL RUN RELEASE. Stop using it as tea-leaves and chicken-guts to try and magically divine the will of Hasbro
Hopeful! I'm considering this update on Derpy's naming to be a Harmony Day treat from Hasbro. See my Harmony Day spread here on Dreamwidth. Muffins!
ReplyDeleteIt was more of a rumor she was leaving!
ReplyDeleteYou wanna know what'll be funny, though? If we learn that there WAS an issue in The Last Roundup, but it had nothing to do with Derpy (like the names Dodge Junction or Cherry Jubilee). Or maybe the issue was Pinkie Pie's voice when she yelled "YOU PINKIE PROMISED!" that actually raised some concerns from parents. I don't know. I'm just speculating.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a good sign at all that The Last Roundup's original scheduled date of airing on Wednesday was replaced with another episode, but this could also have been a mixed message between Hub and the higher ups. Until then, we can just stay tuned.
Even more conspicuous is the fact that iTunes still hasn't updated their uncatalogued with the NEW episode that didn't have a single Derpy reference or appearance in it (outside of the title, of course).
Actually, didn't Hub shuffle episodes around a couple times before in the past? Or outright skip episodes? Doesn't Wednesday's change have some precedence?
@scribly5000
ReplyDelete"Sure,the name stays derpy, but she will never be in any other episode, and all previous episodes will get remastered and replace appearances of derpy with a different pony"
My thoughts exactly.
@scribly5000
ReplyDeleteExactly my thoughts. It's a way to weasel around what they're doing. Quell the fans, and still kill the character.
The fact that it barely takes a few minutes of effort to fake a convincing email screenshot doesn't help.
ReplyDeleteI have faith in Hasbro and the rest of the team, to be honest I think its just a bunch of paranoia that has gotten the better of us. I bet once this all blows over we'll look back and laugh at all this.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that Hasbro ≠ DHX/Studio B. The latter gave us Derpy... Hasbro is the entity wanting her gone.
ReplyDelete@Sterling
ReplyDeleteI really dont understand why Hasbro would want her gone when they could make so.much.money from Derpy merchandise.
@Ragemoar
ReplyDeleteSo true. Even if it was just Bronies buying the Derpy merchandise (outside the internet fandom, viewers won't be too familiar with her) they'd still be getting a good amount of money.
@NinjaGalad
ReplyDeleteFun theory, but even if it were true, it would be a REALLY bad move on Hasbro's part. Sure, they'd make money off that DVD, but if they kept Derpy in the show they'd make a lot more money in the long run by people buying episodes with Derpy, and people buying Derpy merchandise.
@Ragemoar
ReplyDeleteBecause, to be blunt, Hasbro does not understand the Brony movement and to an extent, the internet in general.
DHX/Studio B is the one with their finger on the pulse, who understand what's happening. Derpy herself is evidence of this.
To be fair to some level, Hasbro (or just about any company in history) has encountered a phenomenon happening to their brand such as Bronies. They have no idea how to handle it.
It is completely true that Hasbro could capitalise on Derpy's character a great amount. The trick is convincing them of that.
I've been hurt so many times. But, oh, how I want to give in and believe this. It's a lot like love, but at least it doesn't cost so much money. Guarded optimism time.
ReplyDeleteAlso, lol@"flank-hurt". Regarding the tiresome "controversy," my opinion on this- not that anyone needs another opinion at this point- is the same as on most similar matters: don't like it, don't watch/listen. Demanding someone change their art to conform to your personal hang-ups is selfish, childish and arrogant. I am a pretty reasonable and measured person, but I don't think compromise on this issue is healthy- whether it's Derpy, a song lyric, or the whitewashing of a Mark Twain novel, to me it's all a subtle form of censorship and the stifling of free speech AND free thought, and that is never a good thing when any kind of art is involved.
No one should have the right to not be offended. Instead, exercise your ability to choose what to be offended by with a little bit of thought. It works wonders.
@Sterling
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly why whenever I write Hasbro or the Hub through the Discovery page, I mention my honest desire to buy products that appeal to me- Derpy very much included.
The fact is that for Hasbro and any business, it's not a matter of protecting free speech or respecting different viewpoints. Studio B cares about that, but that isn't the issue for Hasbro. For them, it's simply about how much business they stand to lose or gain by keeping or removing the element in question.
Our job is to convince them that it is in their best interest to leave Derpy alone, which means being willing to put our money where our mouth is. After all, as the Supreme Court of the US has declared, money = speech.
In conclusion, HASBRO I CAN HAS DERPY TOYZ NAOW PLZ?
Signed, an adult male.
Hey look, some more "real" emails from Hasbro...

What does this prove? That emails, and screenshots of emails can easily be faked, including proper headers.
please stop using the word derpy one of my friends is crossed eyed and she is called that every day. she hates it. its an insult. her real name is darby but still eveyone calss her that. it saden me that this community would use such a name. the mares name is ditzy. i dont care if its canon its like retard hooves. its offensive.
ReplyDelete@Midnight Blitz
ReplyDeleteMidnight:
I too suffer from Strabismus (Medical term for divergence or convergence of the eyes.) Specifically, divergent Strabismus. Kids will find a name to use to make fun of people, no matter what. I do not find Derpy offensive, and actually would smile if anyone actually called me that, as I would consider comparison to our favorite pony not to be an insult whatsoever :)
Not one to post without proof:

ReplyDeleteYou sir, Are a good man and I admire you for posting this. Insulting someone different ( be it racism or a condition ) will unfortunatly always exist in this world. A cartoon (which wasnt offensive in the least) isnt going to make that any worse.

Seriously, I feel deep down inside that there is no "Derpy Issue", but how hard is it for a company or two to just up and answer a single email or contact to CLARIFY a VERY SIMPLE TO ANSWER question !?! Seriously. Just a single sentance from Hasbro, iTunes, Studio8, etc would quell all this paranoia, speculation, conclusion jumping, and rioting over what may turn out to just be nothing.
ReplyDelete@Dic This actually touches on an interesting fact. You're exactly right, because we all love Derpy, her name AND, as a matter of fact, the way she got that name: her eyes. The way I see it, Derpy herself has been making the name more and more a positive thing, seriously.

ReplyDeleteThat it is... I'm surprised how much this image has spread... I've seen it all over Facebook and Reddit too as well as some other pony sites....

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry your friend is getting picked on and insulted because of her condition. However, changing "Derpy" to "Ditzy" in the show won't stop the harassment. Maybe it will help some if you tell her "Derpy" started out as a nonsense word use in response to a silly mistake, and that it's affectionately being used as the name of one of the most beloved cartoon characters of the decade? I'd like to think that, rather than just surrender to the bullies, we bronies can start the process of drowning out the negative meaning some are trying to give "derpy".
Was there ever any doubt?
ReplyDeleteSo, judging by the new edit they mean they're entirely removing her name from the record...not changing it.
ReplyDeleteDerpy you rock woohoo!
