So there's a page of voting threads on reddit for fan names of various new background ponies! Go and check it out! Everypony needs a name, after all- otherwise how is anyone going to write fanfics about them?
They better not change the name of the pony I named many many months ago! It stuck and that's like my star achievement to this fandom! I'm not going to even say which pony it is because then someone will try to change it just for lols.
Also I love reddit, but most of the pony subreddits, especially r/mylittlepony/, are terrible.
Why does naming ponies cause a problem? Yes, Derpy was named by us. But so were Lyra and Bon-Bon and Vinyl Scratch and Octavia and Carrot-top and Colgate and Berry Punch and...
Our names for them, for the most part, have no affect on the show anyway. Nothing wrong with giving them monikers.
I swear, the whole fandom seems on edge right now, probably all because of Derpy. Seriously, don't knock the fandom down from the inside by fighting, you guys.
I believe the whole Derpy issue (not trying to resurrect the whole thing here) reflects the unintended consequences of the show adopting elements of brony fandom without full vetting from Hasbro.
Like it or not, a for-profit business has to concern itself with issues of ownership and/or prurience. I don't know what is really behind Derpygate, if anything at all. But it's reasonable for Hasbro to be 100% sure they can use the name Derpy now and in the future, especially considering they didn't come up with the name in the first place.
And if it can happen with Derpy, it can happen with anything else that is named by the fandom.
I'm not saying we shouldn't name ponies. I'm saying we should keep our expectations reasonable on how these names may be co-opted by the show, using Derpy as a potential example.
Wow, so much hate for reddit. Can't imagine everyone in a thread getting so up in arms every time ponychan or any other pony site was mentioned. The hell did reddit ever do to you lot? We like ponies just as much as you. Not very pony-like of you.
At first the wiki had a free-for-all naming policy, so some ponies only got one name and some ponies got a lot of names. Recently the wiki switched to a vote-based naming policy, and all of the unnamed ponies will eventually have their placeholder name voted on.
Screwball will most likely remain Screwball since it's a popular name that will probably be the winning nomination.
Again what is with the teletubby horn ponies. Enough already! Stick with the mane 3 species. Unicorn, Earth and Pegasus. No freaking teletuby style horns omfg! PEOPLE! No wonder theres drama in the fandom.
I think you should post the rules for nomination: *Nomination posts must contain ONLY THE NAME *Edited posts will be disqualified *Avoid posting the same name more than once I dunno, ask the mods
Reddit seems like the easiest place to go name ponies, with its simple voting system and all.
@RaptorArts Just incase you're serious, the reason the Reddit ponies look like that is because they're ponified versions of the Reddit mascot, who has an alien horn thingy.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad bad BAD idea?
Personally I've always found that a lot of the fun comes from coming up with your own names for the ponies that don't already have the widely fan accepted ones. It's a neat outlet for creativity. Isn't this just draining the fun out of some of this?
Ah, I see. They're trying to come up with names themselves for any new background ponies in the show. You know, people do that in pretty much every Brony community these days. And despite what they come up with there, if a better one is put forward somewhere else, that one is going to be the one to stick most likely. Doesn't matter where it's conceived, if it's a good name, it'll be the one that people start associating them with.
It's set up by the people running the MLP wiki. They figured they couldn't just leave the ponies blank and it would be unfair to just keep fighting over what the "official unoffical names" for all of the background ponies are.
I know it's run by the people who run the MLP Wiki... that's half of what worries me about this.
Anyway, with the exception of three of those ponies that I saw there (The white Wonderbolt with the yellow mane that most people refer to as Surprise, Screwball, and Twilight's Father) I really don't think that MOST people will care, but... that's kinda the thing. Most people don't CARE. It's like this is inviting them to START caring and, well, that's just inviting arguments.
Let's say that you wanted to write a fanfic about a background pony you saw. She's a pink earth pony with a blue and white mane. You decide to name her 'Wildflower' for your fanfic, but then somebody comes along from the MLP wiki and tells you that you can't do that because her 'real name is Berry Blast' because that's what the MLP wiki says.
It's ridiculous, true, but if the recent Derpy Drama and the blindbag debacle from several months back are any indication, I wouldn't doubt it'd happen. And it seems like purposefully taking the ambiguity away from background ponies is just inviting this sort of crap to happen more often.
I'll concede the point that voting on it is a BETTER strategy than the MLP wiki just forcing things down our throat like they've done in the past, but... I dunno, it just seems to be an invitation for discontent among fans is all. Think how angry and argumentative people get around election days...
I dunno, maybe I'm just a little bit of an alarmist around this point in time thanks to all the Derpy Drama, but... this just strikes me as a bad idea.
@Dusty the Royal Janitor Well, if it helps, any and all placeholder names are just placeholder names. I don't want to bring up the drama of Derpy, and the previous drama of Lyra, but this will eventually help.
Instead of having a bunch of names for one pony, there will only be one that is liked the most. Every four weeks, the admins of the wiki (including myself) will go back to the polls and see if any new names are liked more. If yes, we change it. It'll solve some problems.
I agree with you that there are problems, but if we stay strong, we will get through it <3
@Unknown I agree with you. But, as a fandom, we take risks. Not saying we should start naming all the ponies bad names or such, but sometimes things just have to be done.
Cereal. I am extremely disappointed that you decided to support that wiki. The background names for our beloved BG ponies evolved from commonplace use. That wiki has been undermining that entire process by deleting commonplace fan names such as carrot top while paradoxically holding polls for new ones. It has been justifying this by claiming they are merely "placeholder names" while getting unwitting saps like the reddit mods and now you to hold generic polls for "pony names" or getting them to link as you just did.
You just made thousands aware of these polls ensuring that what the wiki claims is improper use of its resources (fan names for ponies) continues thereby continuing to make it popular for a reason it pretends to despise.
I know it's hard to understand, because the person who runs it tries to complicate issues.
Basically, you just helped him screw over the fandom so that his wiki would get more popular.
To clarify my last statement, I'm gonna just post some stuff I posted on reddit when I was more articulate:
"You need to listen to what I am about to say. I understand it is confusing, because the wiki moderator insists on it being confusing. The wiki does not have a single fanon name on it. You are not voting on fanon names. You are voting on a placeholder name for the wiki. "What's the difference?", you may ask. Good question. In many ways there is no difference, but it allows the wiki to have deniability. If anyone claims these votes aren't fair, the wiki can simply say it doesn't matter since the names are "only placeholders for the wiki, and not intended to be fanon names" If anyone decries the wiki for holding names not universally agreed on, they can say the same thing. At the same time, users continue to use the wiki to learn what the names for fan characters supposedly are. Understand? These votes are merely a way for the wiki to control fan nicknames for old and new characters while at the same denying any of them are fan nicknames.
If these are really placeholder names, then it shouldn't matter what they are, there is no reason for us to care. "The wiki calls it unicorn 5? psssh whatever." But that's not what the wiki's doing. It's using names that sound like fanon names, yet still denying they're fanon names. (Did you click that link?) Ok? The wiki used to just allow people to add fanon names. Under that system it was fine, because anyone who wanted to make a fanwork and use fan names could simply choose from the several options presented next to each pony name. There was no vote, there was no "official" fanon name, there were just options. Then the blindbag came along and fan names started getting deleted, and then background pony names started being reduced to one, and now one subset of the fandom is being polled in a way which is demonstratably unfair. Now the wiki isn't a suitable resource to be used for fan names. Understand? This is just not right in any way."
I should also point out to anyone reading this that there appear to be several projects underway to get MLP a proper wiki without all the BS the one these polls are for is putting us through. Most are in development, but there's even an ad-free one that doesn't rely on wikia.
...And that is why I said that the fact that it's being run by the people who run the MLP Wiki is half of what scares me, and that I think this is inviting trouble.
•The wiki had a free-for-all placeholder name policy. Anyone was able to add a name to the list of ponies. •Some ponies had as many as twenty names, and people kept deleting names they don't like. Not wiki admins, just people who didn't like a name and decided they get to tell what an unnamed pony is called or not called. •To fix this, it was decided that names will be put up to vote.
That's it. I have a hunch that the loudest complainers are the ones who deleted the names from the list and feel entitled to tell other people what to call the ponies. Otherwise, why complain?
•Free-for-all names: they complain. •Voting on names, they complain. •How should names be decided then? Why, one person they choose will be the one to decide, obviously!
...no I don't see the problem here. The way your comment was worded half the time I can't tell whether you're talking about the wiki admins or the fans.
"They" are the two complainers. They complained when it was free-for-all because it wasn't the names they wanted, now they complain that there's a vote because "one name is not enough".
They're not even sure what they're complaining about, it's a mishmash of complaints that doesn't add up. Free voting is unfair to the majority? The wiki shouldn't have placeholder names for ponies because they're fanon? Ponibooru is a better place to decide on pony names than reddit? Ridiculous complaints that never build up into a cohesive argument.
You're saying that no matter what happens, somebody is going to find something to complain about. And on top of that, not everybody will be complaining about the same things and some things that people complain about or say will be utterly asinine.
Is that what you're saying?
If this be the case then, well... yes. Human beings, by nature, are never really satisfied and someone will always find something to complain about. Sometimes they'll complain about stupid things too.
That being said, while the old system of naming certainly wasn't perfect, it worked well enough and I never witnessed TOO much in the way of complaining. On the other hand, what they're doing now could be described as "rocking the boat," which will do nothing more than invite more discontent from a wider array of sources. And given what's been going down in the fandom recently... that isn't something we need.
You know, I can't help but feel that anything further I can say at this point will be something I'll ultimately regret, so... what say we just agree to disagree and drop the subject?

Seriously. When asked "how then should the names be given", they say "it's already been decided by one person so that's that."
See the problem here? They don't like letting people vote. They don't like free-for-all naming. They want the name they choose to be on the wiki.
