It looks like Octavia has joined the official pony herd... kind of. Sadly her file name is "Whomever this is". So she doesn't have a name, but she does have a usable vector! At least it's something right?
Head on over to the Hasbro website if you want to create your very own Octavia filled valentines day card!
Well, there's obvious some issues with using the name I gave her on the show of course. She'll likely always be just a fun little backgrounder. And some at the studios do know her name, so it's not like they simply don't know it. lol
We changed Carrot Top to Golden Harvest because a toy that strongly resembles her was released with that name, and we consider all official stuff over fan stuff.
That said, I would be very surprised if we had to change Octavia's name. "WhomeverThisIs" isn't a name, it's just vague.
Oh, I know that's why. But I don't consider it "official" myself until the name is used in the show. Now, if she were called "Golden Harvest" in the show. Then I could see. But I don't put the toys and show in the same bracket.
As for the file name. It's not an actual name, obviously. If you changed it to that on the Wiki, well, that'd just be silly.
"A toy that strongly resembles ..." is a pretty silly 'official' source. At least this vector is clearly an image of "Octavia/WTI." Since the person who created the file name is clearly an employee of the Hub, a company that is largely owned by Hasbro, ergo it is an "official source." I expect to see the page changed forthwith.
Actually, this must have been done by a straight-up Hasbro employee. Therefore it is official. Tavi, at least now you get sign your name with your cutie mark and have folks refer to you as "The Cellist Formerly Known as Octavia."
Could this be the start of another Heartstrings/Lyra freak out. I mean I like the wiki... but I just don't see the toys as very reliable for names when the crew who work on the series have the say of what goes in the show, where as the toys get even main characters names messed up.
You're correct. It's not likely the name Carrot Top would be used in the show itself for several reasons. And the show and the Hasbro toy line are two separate entities as well. So sometimes things aren't quite the same between the two.
Probably not, but it's fun to make fun of the wiki folks for that whole fracas. Thank goodness when we lawyers and judges have to figure out what the law is, we're able to take into consideration original intent and policy considerations, not merely the most absolutely literal interpretation possible.
@Kaijyuu Well the whole Carrot Top nickname has been around longer than the prop-comedian, just as a nickname to orange haired people so he can't claim exclusive rights to it. But yeah, Golden Harvest is kind of a weird name for her since in the show she has orange hair not gold hair.
The wiki covers the show, using official sources when the show doesn't provide an answer. The toys are official. Fan names are not. It's not complicated.
People who complain about the wiki and it's stubborn insistence on preferring official sources to the fandom mystify me. It doesn't cover the fandom! There is what amounts to a "fandom mode" on the wiki, "unlocking" pages for Lyra and Carrot Top and ponies who would never get an article of their own on the main wiki, not to mention comics and fan fiction and other awesome stuff like Friendship is Witchcraft. And everybody can switch back and forth between the show wiki and the fandom wiki easy-peasy. But people don't. Also mystifying.
On topic, "WhomeverThisIs" is not only grammatically incorrect, it's also not a name. But it is official, so it will get a mention on Octavia's page.
@Octavia Hey I'm not the one who brought up the wiki and derided its policies when there was no need to do so. You disagree with how it operates, fine, that's your right. I'm allowed to tell you why I disagree, aren't I?
@Tulip Claymore The reason people are taking the Micheal out of the MLP Wiki is that the admins, for the most part, are not very nice people at all, Throwawaytv in particular.
It's not so much the fact that the Wiki doesn't recognise fan-given names, it's the fact that the admins will make snide comments, name-call and even ban commenters who have dissenting opinions. On the Lyra/Heartstrings page, someone came up with some very valid points on the arbitrary priority of sources the Wiki uses. One admin suggested making a thread in the forums to discuss it, until Throwawaytv wades in and stars accusing the commenter of name-calling, trolling, etc, etc, because he dared to question the status quo. Also, see the comments on this page for more of Throwawaytv's gold: http://mlpfanart.wikia.com/wiki/Lyra
This is the problem me and many other people have with the wiki; not because they don't include fan names, but because the admins are for the most part very obnoxious, opinionated people who seem to believe that their minority opinion should be allowed to lord over a collaborative effort. It's a joke.
Alright, that's at least two people that are having the same problem as me. I know I used to be able to use this before the Christmas update, and I would have hoped the Valentines update would have fixed it, but nope, still nothing. Actually if anything it's worse, I used to just be missing all the ponies, but now there is nothing but an empty white void.
Clearly the program is working for most folks, but some us are being left out in the cold. Do any tech experts out there have any idea what could be going on.
Well, I'm not putting it in a way that sounds like I'm bashing others either. And I'm not deciding it's policies. But the Wiki isn't the foremost expert on everything either. And frankly, I think it operates on just opinions alone too at times. I came up with the Octavia name. And me and a ton of other people are going to stick behind it. Despite what a random file name on a flash game is labeled as.
@Octavia I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. Don't you think it's ironic that the Wiki trumpets that it uses 'official' sources, and yet the hierarchy of sources was arbitrarily decided by a handful of people, who seem to be opposed to the vast majority of the fanbase?
@Melon Hunter I'm an admin, and have been for months. I don't think (I would hope) I've ever made snide comments, called people names or banned people purely for dissenting opinions. Throwawaytv will have to speak for himself if he wishes to do so, but it may interest you to know that there was a bit of a kerfuffle about his attitude a while back and that it has improved since then.
That whole Lyra debate wasn't handled as well as it could have been on the side of the admins, which I'll freely admit, but since I have access to the deleted comments, I can also tell you that many of those that were deleted were deleted for good reasons. "Disagreement" is not a good reason, but hurling insults is. And from my recollection, a lot of people who had never contributed to the wiki and didn't know how it worked got unreasonably hostile.
I'm also an admin at the sister wiki I linked to earlier and just finished a short-story length article on "Friendship is Witchcraft" today; no one can say I hate the fandom, and I get annoyed when that implication is thrown around. I just prefer to keep the official information on one page and the fan information on another page, one click away. That's the attitude of not just most of the admins, but also most of the users.
@Octavia Thank you for coming up with the name Octavia :) I think you were brilliant, and is one great name for a pony. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that :3
Thank you!!
As for the topic of the entry, Octavia is best pony, with or without bowtie :P
@Tulip Claymore Oh, no. I wouldn't want to tar you all with the same brush; in fact most of my negative encounters with wiki admins have been with Throwawaytv. And yes, there were plenty of malodourous comments from the Lyra and Carrot Top supporters as well; these needed to be removed, but I have seen plenty of comments taken down that had valid points.
However, even if his attitude has been improving, he's still a very aggressive admin. Things like this being posted on the fan wiki irritated me to no end: "Thanks for showing me exactly how the wiki would look if there were no requirement for reliable sources. "Is considered by many" "Some argue", "others say", putting words in Hasbro's mouth." I still see him borderline insulting people for differing opinions on those trouble pages on the wiki.
I may be letting this get the better of me, but the way I see it, a few overly aggressive admins are giving the rest of the admins and the wiki a bad name. If they keep causing trouble themselves, would it not be prudent to cut them out of the loop?
@Melon Hunter I was there when the hierarchy was codified, and I was probably one of those "handful of people". But I'm not sure you know how wikis work. Tens of thousands of people visit it daily. Of those, maybe a few hundred contribute regularly. Of those, at most a few dozen are willing to discuss wiki policies. The discussion process is open, but most people don't bother, especially if they agree with the general gist of the discussion. That's how you get "a handful of people". It's called consensus.
@Melon Hunter The wiki software managing comments is a nightmare. "Collateral damage" unfortunately happens all the time. I can't vouch for every deletion by every admin, of course, but that's my experience.
In the comment you cite, Throwawaytv may be blunt, but he isn't wrong. The article was later changed to address some of his valid concerns which of course look weird now (if you look at the history, it used to claim that Hasbro only used "Heartstrings" for copyright reasons; I believe you'll agree that we don't know that for certain).
@Octavia If you have a different story of how Octavia got her name, please add it to the page. You can do so anonymously if you don't want to register an account.
True. I wasn't entirely aware of how many people voted upon the wiki policies. However, from what I see from many of the regular contributors, I have a hard time believing that consensus is ever going to change, even if it had reason to. If a large enough group of people who contributed regularly to the wiki called for a review of the source hierarchy, would it go through? Or would it be slapped down by the old guard, because they decreed it official at the start of the wiki?
Also, I picked that comment not because of rightness or wrongness; it's clear from the stream that the original commenter was fairly new to writing wiki articles, and that some of his sources were mere hearsay. What I pointed out was the fact that he gave off a sense of moral superiority; that the MLP wiki was superior and that a wiki that dealt with fanbase matters wasn't worth anyone's time due to inherent inaccuracies. That is what annoyed me. If you notice, further down the stream, he reverts back to name-calling and general rudeness. Hardly the behaviour of a respected admin, now, is it?
Again, I think this is what drives people away from the wiki. I would like to contribute and have a say in how it's run, but the intimidation and insults I see in the comments have pretty much convinced me that it's not worth my time; I'll just be shouted down by the people who came before.
@Octavia Just googling the name 'Spydak' led me to find this post: http://mlp.wikia.com/index.php?title=List_of_ponies&page=20#comm-7818 That seems to be the only reference to them coming up with the name Octavia I think.
@Melon Hunter "The start of the wiki" was 4chan; it's been through a great many changes since then. I can't know that for certain, but I'd like to think that I helped codify what background pony pages should look like, and that was at the very beginning of my wikihood, when I was very far away from being an admin. In this case, though, I think most of the contributors are pretty happy with the current rules.
Like I said, it's not my job to defend Throwawaytv's wording. I don't see any namecalling, though. "weasel words" is wikipedia jargon, not an insult. And it's his opinion that wikis ought to be verifiable, so of course that makes the main wiki superior in that sense. I would even agree with that, objectively. I don't read any moral condemnation into his comments, though, just exasperation that some people want the show wiki (for which reliable sources do exist) to have the same standards as the fandom wiki (for which they do not).
If you'd like to contribute to a wiki but not the wiki because you don't like the guy you perceive as running the show, at least consider contributing to the Fan Labor Wiki, where I suppose I'm the one running the show (though I reject that concept; wikis are always collaborative). If you're at all interested in the fringes around the show, anyway; it doesn't cover the show itself, at least not directly. This page, for instance, needs a ton of work (it often takes me an hour to research a new addition and make sure I cover the most common names).
I thought about it. But I'm not that worried anyway. There's numerous people who claim to have been this or that ponies name originator. Many know me as the true one behind Octavia. Though there is one other person out there that I believe may have had the same idea as me at the same time. Not certain, but he has a convincing story as well. So perhaps it was akin to lightning striking two places at the exact same time. But I don't know if it's a "different story". I posted it right after the episode aired and people seemed to like it and take to it. That's about it.
Oh Octy, you look nekkid without without your bow tie But still cool :D I Bet she's gonna be in the episode, standing in the corner of a restaurant playing her cello, while Big Mac and Cheerilee are having a love potion induced date XD
@Octavia I'm Spyda K, aka Alex McG. Both Octavia and I claim to have come up with the name Octavia for the cellist pony. At this point, there's no real way for either of us to disprove the other.
I originally tagged the name on an image macro I made an uploaded on Ponibooru. I didn't have an account on the site at the time, so it reads as being uploaded by Anonymous. And I think because it was anonymous, it doesn't seem to come up in searches. http://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/11482
I also originally added Octavia to the wiki back when she was just listed under "List of Earth Ponies"
My tale of coming up with the name is listed here: http://nerdnoise.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-i-named-pony.html

Oh Ocatvia... you are so mysterious. I think I prefer her this way rather then canon. :)
ReplyDeletelike, whoa, man.
ReplyDeletedamn it, it worked then blanked. :[
ReplyDeleteWell, Octavia isn't as popular as Derpy, So I wouldn't fault Hasbro for not knowing her name.
ReplyDeleteCool first
ReplyDeleteNot 1st.
ReplyDeleteDang you Internet! Why'd you log me outta Google?
ReplyDeleteI've never heard anyone say "whomever" before.
ReplyDeleteCool Octavia Valentine card! Now who do I give one too...... Forever Alone
ReplyDeletewell she has to keep that james bond type allure or else shes just a classy DJ-Pwn3
ReplyDeleteWhat if octavia becomes cannon on the Hearts and hooves day episode... how many orgasm can the internet support?
ReplyDeleteSo... anyone want to take bets on how long before someone insists her name is Octavia Whomeverthisis?
ReplyDeleteLet's write a petition about Octavia's name. It seems to be a solution to all problems these days.
ReplyDeleteO Celestia it's raining Octavia!!
ReplyDeleteNo bowtie!
ReplyDeleteI choose to interpret this as meaning her official name literally is "Whomever This Is".
ReplyDeleteWell, there's obvious some issues with using the name I gave her on the show of course. She'll likely always be just a fun little backgrounder. And some at the studios do know her name, so it's not like they simply don't know it. lol
ReplyDeleteAnd that is a whole lot of classical pony.
Soon...
ReplyDeleteHer name is Whomever This Is now.
ReplyDeleteSoon, the Octavian Army. soon...
ReplyDeleteThis makes me happy. Though seeing her without her bowtie is odd, it's like...she's naked :o
ReplyDeleteOctavia Valentines Day Cards?!
ReplyDeleteALL OF MY LOVE!
No bow tie? D:
ReplyDeleteI expect the MLP wiki to rename her page to "Whomever This Is."
ReplyDelete@James Corck
ReplyDeleteOh, you like it. ;) lol
Her oversized irises and pupils penetrate my soul.
ReplyDeleteOh my.. Somebody made battle clones of Octavia! The war is upon us, brace yourself.
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteAnyone who takes that Wiki seriously should find a new place to look up info. They changed Carrot Top's name to "Golden Harvest" for Pete's sake.
Hasbro's site acknowledges Octavia... I love them. :3
ReplyDeleteObviously this character is offensive to players of the Double Bass. Someone should complain to Hasbro and make sure she's never seen again.
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note... yay! More Octavia!
This may be fun until the fans bitch about [insert reason to mindlessly complain here].
ReplyDeletelol, love the file name! xD
ReplyDeleteThe person who named this file is definitely trolling. They know who Octavia is, that's why they didn't use her name.

@Octavia
ReplyDeleteWe changed Carrot Top to Golden Harvest because a toy that strongly resembles her was released with that name, and we consider all official stuff over fan stuff.

Aaaaand my computer's at the other house. Awesome...
ReplyDelete@Darkdrium
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly. :)
@Kinrah

@Darkdrium
ReplyDeletePrecisely.
Why do people act like "Golden Harvest" ISN'T a more creative name than freakin "Carrot Top"? I'm askin....
ReplyDelete@Kinrah
ReplyDelete"A toy that strongly resembles ..." is a pretty silly 'official' source. At least this vector is clearly an image of "Octavia/WTI." Since the person who created the file name is clearly an employee of the Hub, a company that is largely owned by Hasbro, ergo it is an "official source." I expect to see the page changed forthwith.
RE: "official" names.
ReplyDeleteRemember Lyra's name was used in-show during Cutie Pox, though it's ambiguous who's saying it and to whom (bon-bon was on the screen!).
Anywho, she's missing her bow tie! Unforgivable sin.
Actually, this must have been done by a straight-up Hasbro employee. Therefore it is official. Tavi, at least now you get sign your name with your cutie mark and have folks refer to you as "The Cellist Formerly Known as Octavia."
ReplyDeleteAs for Carrot Top specifically, since there's a has-been celebrity with that name, I seriously doubt Hasbro could use Carrot Top for her name.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't make Golden Harvest any less dumb, though.
i think it's broken
ReplyDeleteit keeps showing a demo for it then whiteing out
Could this be the start of another Heartstrings/Lyra freak out. I mean I like the wiki... but I just don't see the toys as very reliable for names when the crew who work on the series have the say of what goes in the show, where as the toys get even main characters names messed up.
ReplyDelete@Kaijyuu
ReplyDeleteYou're correct. It's not likely the name Carrot Top would be used in the show itself for several reasons. And the show and the Hasbro toy line are two separate entities as well. So sometimes things aren't quite the same between the two.
@Rockabore
ReplyDeleteProbably not, but it's fun to make fun of the wiki folks for that whole fracas. Thank goodness when we lawyers and judges have to figure out what the law is, we're able to take into consideration original intent and policy considerations, not merely the most absolutely literal interpretation possible.

ReplyDeleteNow that's a lot of Octavia!
ReplyDelete@ScootaChicken What, did Carrot Top (The comedian, not the pony) trademark bowties too?!
ReplyDeleteShow some spine, Hasbro!
@Fleetwood_Brougham
ReplyDeleteNot to be a downer, but they already showed some spine.
They killed Derpy.

You know, if Octavia is in Hearts and Hooves. I ask for one simple thing. Shout out the Belle Notte Scene from Lady and the Tramp. Please. Do it.
ReplyDelete@Tulip Claymore
ReplyDeleteAre you really bringing this into this thread too? If you want to complain, troll, and stir the pot, take it to the Derpy post.
Because of Beyond Her Tomb, I can't think of naming our favorite carrot-flanked pony differently than Carrot Top.
ReplyDeleteCause she ain't a normal filly at all, she's a star in the sky!
Also, Hasbro likes to play with our minds, I guess they called this picture "Whomever this is" only for the joke...
@Octavia

This page, for instance, needs a ton of work (it often takes me an hour to research a new addition and make sure I cover the most common names).
@Photocopier
No, the claim is from the first (and only) reference on this page.
@Tulip Claymore
ReplyDeleteI thought about it.
Oh Octy, you look nekkid without without your bow tie
ReplyDeleteBut still cool :D
I Bet she's gonna be in the episode, standing in the corner of a restaurant playing her cello, while Big Mac and Cheerilee are having a love potion induced date XD
Whomever this is. Really? Not "Cello Pony" or anything like that, but "Whomever this is"
ReplyDeleteI cannot be the only person who's unnecessarily amused that she's called *whom*ever this is.
ReplyDeleteAugh, why do people use "whom" as some sort of fancy form of "who"?
ReplyDeletehttp://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~jlynch/Writing/h.html#hypercorrection
"Whom is another frequent problem for hypercorrectors; they have the sense that whom is more correct than who, and use it improperly."
@Ian Andreas Miller
ReplyDeleteDoes "whom" even still exist in American English?
@Octavia: I thought Spyda K was you!
ReplyDelete@Kaijyuu
ReplyDeleteThey could always ask, what if it turns out he's a brony?
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteI'm Spyda K, aka Alex McG.
