It's Sunday! You know what that means. Episode followup time. As we all know, this actually popped up in iTunes way early, so information on it has been floating around for quite a while now! It's nice to finally be able to spill the beans and talk about it.
Onward after the break for all the followupy goodness, ridiculousness, and derpyness.
Cheerilee sure has improved as a character. I've said it a million times already, but I really feel bad about complaining when she first appeared as a McDonalds toy way back in the day! The poor girl deserves her spotlight! She does look a bit lonely though.
And once again they have graced us with these awesome new season two faces. Seriously, go watch one of the early first season episodes and compare it, the animation quality has been ramped up exponentially. These guys have definitely mastered the cartoon equine form!
Once again, the chubby pony who's life goal appears to be eating has made an appearance. Maybe he will be a famous chef in the future? Who knows!
It looks like he gets all the fillies at least!
Except for this one. Apparently she has a crush on Twist!
There are plenty of other girls to go for. You are way out of her league anyway.
And good news for those of you who like Twilight Sparkle a bit... too... much. It looks like Ponyville's number one adorkable librarian spent the holiday solo... studying... as always. She's totally available.
I don't know if this is breaking the 4th wall, or just how Rainbows work in Equestria.
We also got a glimpse at what starving ponies look like. I'm not sure why Daisy has a dunce cap on. That is definitely grounds for her usual freakout though.
We also get a few feats of strength from Big Mac. Apparently earth ponies really are ridiculously powerful. I guess Dash cheated in that arm wrestling competition with Applejack or something.
And of course the obligatory Derpy Hooves plug. I guess you could also argue that she is being shipped with Doctor Whooves here (which is a pretty popular pairing among the pony romance community).
Video games confirmed in Equestria
Pony Death confirmed in Equestria =[
Caramel confirmed for straight, or he could just swing both ways. Who knows!
We also have a few new characters. I couldn't find a name for the one above. This season has too many new ponies! I can't keep up! The next Comic Con poster is going to be insane.
I don't even know what to say about this guy. If I was walking down the street and saw someone bathing in a giant jar of Jelly, I'd probably run for the hills.
And this is what happens when you get shafted with a Cutie Mark from whatever era is currently going on. Taking "stuck in the 70's" to a whole new level.
And... a tire. Is it possible that Equestria is earth thousands of years in the future!?
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. The CMC's used to drive me nuts, but they really have officially grown on me. I still prefer Twilight Sparkle episodes, but I suppose the poor girl needs a break after each freakout.
And I'll finish this off with some music, enjoy!
Hearts and Hooves String Quartet

ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for this!
ReplyDeleteOh, so many things I didn't notice the first time!
ReplyDeleteThis episode was full of WIN.
ReplyDeletegreat episode. as always
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who looked at that .gif and figured that that filly was going to give chubby pony the card, and not Twist? They were both in that general direction, and given that Twist and forever alone filly both had cards (and Twist gave hers to chubby pony), that seemed like the most logical conclusion.
ReplyDeleteI'm more interested in that bone in the ground. O.o
ReplyDeleteAlso, Jelly Fetish pony is now best.
And now, like every weekend, I leave you guys my review of the episode here.
ReplyDeletehttp://awthredestim.blogspot.com/2012/02/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic.html
Thank you all for checking it out! Let me know what you think of it on the comments :D
Did no one notice twilight was reading the book that's in the first episode?
ReplyDeleteThe same scene with Derpy and Dr. Whooves also features Lyra and Bonbon... And Bonbon with someone else, but mostly Bonbon with Lyra ^^
ReplyDeleteDaisy has a dunce cap on to signify Cheerilee leaving school. At least, that's my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI would go so far as to say that this is the best CMC episode yet.
ReplyDeleteThe story behind the leak remains a mystery, but most importantly we all are happy with this episode
String quartet arrangement for the win. Proud violist here, and was definitely air-bowing along with the music!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this episode and thought it was done. I am also hoping that the jelly pony does NOT become a meme. He is pretty creepy. Anyways I hope the staff keeps up the great work.
ReplyDeleteIs Video Game Pony wearing the same hat as Screwball?
ReplyDeleteI never comment this early. O_o
ReplyDeleteGreat Episode
ReplyDeleteThis episode was quite amazing.
ReplyDeleteHugh Jelly is best pony <3
ReplyDelete@Sethisto AppleBloom was claiming that without cheerilee the school would shut down, (W/o big mac ponies would starve), saying later Starved uneducated ponies mass histeria
ReplyDeleteoverall i liked the episode. So much crazy! The derpy doc thing though was rather surprising. Nice catch.
ReplyDeleteDaisy is wearing a dunce cap because Cheerilee isn't teaching and nopony is learning
ReplyDeleteI just noticed, Twist actually had her cutie mark in this episode. Plus, Scootablu returns in the arcade game picture.
ReplyDelete@Acriaos
ReplyDeleteThat one talking to the other pony was just Bon Bon's mirror universe clone. Didn't you see the beard?
Sorry Seth, but starving pony is Lily.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, this was a toally awesome episode. The hopeless romantic in me, however, was just as trolled as the CMC by Cheerimac at the end.
@James Corck
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I remember stumbling on this one day and never finding this again. Great reviews you make :D
And for the pony thing, why does she have to have a crush on Twist? She could have just as likely gone gaga for fatpone :S
Dat jeweler pony is clearly named Cut Above. Sounds about right.
ReplyDeleteI think the dunce hat was to symbolize that everpony is getting stupid without Cheerilees education.
ReplyDeleteDid the filly switch seats with a pegasus to be next to Twist, that's kind of sad and adorable.
ReplyDeleteIn the starving scene, Daisy has a dunce cap on because Applebloom talks about the whole town being uneducated and starving when Cheerliee and Big Mac are under the love poison.
ReplyDeleteFillyfoolers confirmed? It was always to be expected...
ReplyDeleteWHOA! I didn't even realize that was a funeral! and that old pony had a priests collar?
ReplyDeleteNow we just have to speculate which Bon Bon voice was with Lyra and which was with Shoeshine.
ReplyDeleteI laughed when Sweetie Belle interrupted the funeral to declare the preacher "too old". As discussed in the episode commenting, one does wonder what religion they're practicing there. Probably praying to Cadence... Someone has to be Alicorn of the Underworld, right?
ReplyDeleteYES! ALL OF THE PLANET OF THE PONIES!
ReplyDeletePlease let Equestria be Earth thousands of years in the future :<
The pony who's playing video games... his propeller hat reminds me of the 4chan symbol...
ReplyDeleteI think that little filly has a crush on chubby pony, not Twist...she just didn't act fast enough and Twist beat her to giving him a valentine.
ReplyDelete@Woodencoyote
ReplyDeleteIf I recall my Star Trek (DS9) the mirror universe was where all the lesbian-variant members of the female cast lived. :-D
I love this picture of Twilight, kinda.. erm :D
ReplyDelete@EngineerBrony And Daisy is wearing a dunce cap because you had uneducated, starving ponies...no apples or school!
ReplyDeleteThey're not dead yet, they feel happy!
ReplyDelete(I do hope people get the reference or i'll feel silly.)
Though if they did run out of food I think they would be able to barter for more or obtain relief suplies, an entire town starving would not slip by.
They have a rail link to Canterlot, Ponyville isn't that far off the beaten track.
That 70's pony is brilliant.
I have to say this is officially my FAVORITE episode ever!! (so far)
ReplyDeleteThe little rejected filly is so adorable :I
ReplyDeleteHurray for Derpy and Whooves as a couple! You guys realize this confirms even more that Hasbro loves us Bronies?
ReplyDeleteAlso, TOm Selleck Pony?!
Derpy and Doctor Whooves. Best Hearts and hooves.
ReplyDeleteIf she was interested in Truffle Shuffle the dejected pony would have swapped seats with Twist.
ReplyDeleteAlso another way to look at it is if the dejected pony couldn't get Twist to swap seats with her.
Just about every time Mac opened his mouth I wanted to punch him...
ReplyDeleteLife goal is to live forever!
ReplyDeletePlease don't bring the topic of religion again, seriously...
ReplyDeleteI liked the episode, the one thing im not especially fond of are gaming-related cutie marks being canon now, meaning more obnoxious OCs can be proclaimed as 'justified', but whatever, im not bringing down the episode for that.
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteWatch out for sword-lobbing moistened bints!
New pony name is, Diamond Ring, Diamond Tiara's uncle who runs the jewelry store allowing Filthy rich to get cheaper jewelry. Also i though we declared the chubby pony was Russel or something like that. Finally this was an all around amazing episode, i waited till Saturday to watch it, my only real complaint is that we really didn't see what anypony was doing this episode except Twilight... Well i guess that's for the fanfiction writers to decide
ReplyDeletePinkie-bouncin' Big Mac has got to be one of the funniest things I've seen this season XD
ReplyDeleteIn the book of Hearts & and hooves day, we see a Picture of a Prince and a princess! (12:28) The princess is an Alicorn, i have a theory that that might have been Princess Cadense? (easter egg maybe?) A story about them when everything whent to hell? nice boost for S3?!?!
ReplyDeleteSomething I just posted over on Ponychan:
ReplyDeleteSome interesting details from Hearts and Hooves
Here be spoilers. Be warned.
1:26 Twist and Truffle Shuffle seem to be good friends.
3:28 Derpy is talking with Dr. Whooves
3:28 Lyra is paired with Bon Bon. Yay!
3:28 Multiple Bon Bons again. Several ponies doubled including Berryshine.
4:09 Derpy is with a filly. It’s not Dinky.
4:09 Old pony from funeral is with his wife by the bridge.
4:09 Caramel seems to be cheating on his new girlfriend with Carrot Top
4:09 Top right, looks like two stallions might be a couple.
4:11 Pokey Pierce is on a date with with one of my favorite BG ponies Stormy (or Lightning Bolt or any of the other names that don’t quite fit)
5:13 May have been here before but just noticed it. The Apples have hung four horseshoes above the barn door, one for each member of the family.
12:28 Biggest OMG in the episode, the royal couple mentioned in Twilight’s Hearts and Hooves book… Looks an awful lot like it might be Cadence and Shining Armor. Could it be this was their first appearance in the show? If so, it seems the Cadence episodes will involve a dragon, falling kingdoms and, wait for it, Chaos reining. Fingers crossed that I’m right and we’ll be getting more Discord.
14:55 Sugarcube Corner also sells apples and carrots.
That’s all I got.
As to why daisy is wearing a dunce cap, it's because Cheerilee isn't teaching anymore.
As for the rainbows, well, pegasus poines do make them. So, maybe Scoot has the power to do that kinda of thing. I dunno. My guess, they did it because it's a silly, funny visual for a cartoon for kids. Heh.
CMC's faces were astonishing in this episode. One of better episodes definitely.
ReplyDeleteWas counting on some actual shippy follow-up in canon like them starting to date or something but writers now better than me what's good :) (and I really mean it - 0% irony!)
@Sleepingcobrox
ReplyDeleteWe know the answer to that mystery, actually. When something is uploaded to iTunes, it takes some amount of time for Apple to process it before it can be made available. The normal practice is to submit your stuff far enough ahead of time that it'll be approved by the date you want to release it, which is typed in for every upload. The Hasbro employee who uploaded this episode typed 2011 instead of 2012 for the release date, so iTunes made it available as soon as it finished processing, which happened to be a few days early.
Well, couldn't that mare have a crush not on Twist, but on Chow Time? That would make sense too: she was planning on giving a Valentine to him, but then saw that Twist gave him one first and decided not to.
ReplyDeleteAnd Daisy's wearing a dunce cap because she's supposedly uneducated! since Cheerilee would have been neglecting her education duties
Id just like to say i would give up my 360 and go to games like pacman. As long as i was a pegasus.
ReplyDeleteDoes the jelly pony have a name yet.
Anyone else but me think that UJelly (my new name for the jelly pony, you jelly?) has a very remarkable resemblance to Derpy only as a stallion? Could it be Derpy's father? It would make sense kind of....shippers, to your stations!
ReplyDelete4:09 Cherry Berry and Cherry Cola together.
ReplyDeleteI thought Big Mac was just suffering from the effects of a love poison and that was why he was acting super powered.
ReplyDelete@Eddie Perkins
ReplyDelete@12:28
Very unlikely. It's said that the hearts and hooves day started with these two and it's assumed that it was very long time ago. If Cadence is not a rotting corpse already or the episode will be a retrospection of some sort, then... BUSTED!
How is Hugh Jelly's amazing expression not in the follow up. This must be fixed.
ReplyDeleteI mean c'mon look at this; http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/853/amazingjellyface.jpg/
@SuperGiantRobot
ReplyDeleteBloody Peasant!
Context for those who don't get it: #1 #2
Ah Arcainum beat me to it.
ReplyDeleteDaisy is the pink one with the green mane (seen two pictures below that one). That particular one with the dunce cap is Lily.
Video game arcade with only colts, pictured one is a blank flank with a beanie... why do I get the feeling shippers are going to do something with that...
This episode was already on fire, but Sweetie Belle really lit the place up. It's great to see how much character development she's getting, and the variants of traits she likely shares with Rarity (of course referring to the "OH COME ON!" line.)
Everything pretty much beat my expectations for the episode. It would be nice to hear Big Mac have more actual lines. If Fluttershy is any indication, even the shyest of ponies can say more than "eeyup" and "enope" from time to time (certainly wouldn't have hurt to have even one line in a couple of his past appearances).
@ Rainbows in the show
ReplyDeleteAt least now we have canon for production of rainbows: they are not made from ponies but recycled. Good to know.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteMy question is who is the alicorn princess in the book? She doesn't look like Celestia or Luna, and it can't be Cadence because Shining Armor is a unicorn.
ReplyDelete@Celestia
ReplyDeleteYour mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!
I believe this was the first time they called Big Mac, "Big Mac" instead of his full name.
ReplyDeleteActually, in the picture of Twist and the pudgy one, it looks a lot more like she's trying to sneak the card to the colt in front of her.
ReplyDeleteShe looks more devious than upset
Wasn't pony death already canon? I seem to recall in Winter Wrap Up Twilight saying something like "...if it kills me!"
ReplyDelete@Sleepingcobrox
ReplyDeleteIt's not a mystery. They said that they accidentally posted it on iTunes with a Release Date of 2/11/11 instead of 2/11/12.
@Unicornia
ReplyDelete~C̮̏ͬ͛ͨ͘H̯̰͈̣ͭͥA̦̹̝̱O̴͗͏̝̦S̮͛ͨͣ̀~
@RustedRabbit
ReplyDeleteWe should name him "Gusta"
@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteWhy would Cadence be a rotting corpse if she's an alicorn? The Cadence signal will never be used at this rate.
@Gamerlord
ReplyDeleteYeah, they've talked about death like that before.
Also, Hearth's Warming Eve heavily implied death from starvation.
@ThyPony
ReplyDeleteApplejack called him "Big Mac" at least once in the Cutie Pox.
Nice thanks for the round up! I really enjoyed this episode, CMC are such a great comedy trio, also Super Mac pulling houses behind him, suppose the earth ponies trait is that their stronger than the others. Obviously doubt they all have Super Mac's strength though ;)
ReplyDeletein the end we get to see Cheeralee and Big Mac in bed together... or at least on the matress lol.
ReplyDelete:P
Hm... Which is worse? Death in Equestria, or Catholic priests in Equestria (check the collar on that old fella)? *ba dum psh* XD
ReplyDeleteDeath is also strongly implied from the fact that the entire surface of the planet isn't withers-deep in ponies
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I didn't catch that! Video Games exist there! But why no TV?
ReplyDelete@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteNot to mention said ponies are accident prone and are very shoddy when it comes to construction.
The dam, the buildings and Berry Punches house all seem to be made from cardboard.
The CMC are friends with all of the Mane 6 but the only pony they know of without a special somepony on Hearts and Hooves day is Cheerilee. So...
ReplyDelete@Stephen
ReplyDeleteAnglican priests do the dog collar thing too. But we're probably just seeing the usual mapping of familiar cultural signifiers for the sake of the target demographic rather than them saying explicitly there's a christian presence in equestria, for which there's been no other evidence.
I do believe that is Lily with the dunce cap, not Daisy.
ReplyDelete@Eddie Perkins
ReplyDeleteWrong, they only ever bothered to ask Cheerilee if she had a special some pony.
We all know Rarity doesn't have anyone after the incident with Blueblood. By logic that's a fallacy of 'if not, then so'.
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeletePonyville Construction Ltd. uses only the finest (occasionally) supported lego in it's construction of buildings.
Yeah, can we get a picture of the royal couple in the book twilight gives the CMC? The mare is an alicorn if you noticed.
ReplyDelete@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteBy which I mean - the priestly dog-collar here is just signifying someone who officiates at funerals.
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeleteMaybe. Maybe not. You never know. lol
Equestria is Earth many millions of years in the future. I'm putting it in my next fic:
ReplyDelete"This planet is very old, very old indeed. So old that geologic processes have create gemstones in almost every rock. Do you know what happens to very old planets? They become tidally locked to their sun. One side burning, one side in perpetual night. Unless there is a native with the telekinetic ability to keep the planet spinning..."
Hm, another alicorn princess....
ReplyDeleteand again with an earthpony prince...
coincidence?
@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd rather not go into the religion thing again, but that "priest" or whatever was probably just there for the sake of the target demographic.
Also, his cutie mark was a pipe, so his special talent is probably blowing bubbles and he just does the funeral thing for fun in his spare time.
I think a big reason the CMC's have been more enjoyable this season is that, as a whole, they seem to have moved past the whole "Cutie Mark hunt" obsession. I mean, think about it; outside of "Cutie Pox", we haven't had any episodes this season that focus on the concept, or even mention it; compare to Season 1, where we had four.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, back in Season 1, the CMC were all about their Cutie Mark hunt. In season 2, however, they've been allowed to move past that and really start to shine as characters, both individually ("Sisterhooves Social") and as a group ("Family Appreciation Day"). At this point, all we really need is a little Scootalove. ^_^
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteI was wondering where my lifetime supply of eggo waffles went... well that explains Sugar Cube Corner now.
@MyBoyJ
ReplyDeleteHis special talent is being the neighborhood bitter old pony who refuses to move with the times.
Come to think of it I wonder if he's any relation of Derpy?
Need some fanart of the Jelly Pony stat.
ReplyDeleteWait, Sweetie Belle crashed a funeral? I thought that guy was just giving an outdoor speech. Dang.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay, tires! Good for bouncing, rolling, and making swings out of! Who needs automobiles?
http://www.ponibooru.org/post/view/130308
ReplyDeletePonibooru has it, the unidentifible alicorn next to her earth/pegesis stallion.
Seth I don't know if its jsut me but its starting to feel that way.
ReplyDeleteDid the image in the Hearts & Hooves book resemble Shinning Armor and Cadence, when read at the CMC club house?
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/429951_3171106112470_1110005784_33291167_450191209_n.jpg
Most earth ponies aren't that strong, clearly you forget who you're talking about here.
ReplyDeleteHey, I got the 100th post!
ReplyDeleteScrew first post! =P
I have a few thoughts i wana throw out here...
ReplyDeleteWhen the CMC ask Cheerilee if she has a somepony, I recognized that look of "oh not again with this question."
IMO I think she is either abstinant, or is, in fact, not attracted to anypony in ponyville. Play nice, just an opinion...
This later is enforced with her interaction with Big Mac. The two made reference to having a past together of some sort. Either romantically or just plutonic is yet to be seen. However, they definately seemed to get the idea the CMC's had, and didnt seem to be at odds with it, just that they knew it wouldnt work.
My 2bits, move along
lol, I love the 'Molto HHHNNNNGGGGGG' in the string quartet music thing there. XD
ReplyDeleteAlso
"Caramel confirmed for straight, or he could just swing both ways. Who knows!"
^
...when you see it:
http://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/128764?search=Hugh_Jelly
Anyways Hugh Jelly is best 'u jelly?'/'me gusta' pony reaction face
@Mike
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to mention: lol @ the implied canon shipping
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteSomepony in the episode thread said he may be Derpy's grandfather, which I could potentially see.
They also suggested that the pipe signified that he was a great thinker or philosopher, and if that was the case, Derpy being hyperintelligent would be more canonically acceptable.
Although it seems that the pipe signifying blowing bubbles and the pipe signifying a philosophical mind would be mutually exclusive.
In other words, we can't have our Derpy grandfather and hyperintelligence too.
Isn't the pony with the dunce cap Lily & not Daisy?
ReplyDeleteMaybe the rubber tires are for pulling carts over rough terrain; like off-roading.
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't even notice the tire until now...
ReplyDeleteAwesome implications!
Incoming fanfics?
@FlutterWhimsy
ReplyDeleteHmm... I thought so too...
@louster200
ReplyDeleteIt's probably Winona's.
Man this episode was great. The jelly pony was just creepy.... and Doctor Whooves never apologizes for covering ponies mud xD
ReplyDeleteBig Mac is like Jerom from Suske & Wiske apparently, just to powerful lol I liked Cheerilee a whole lot more in this episode. If only they showed some more of what the main 6 are doing right now xD
Thank you for not posting the image of jelly guy making that one face. It gives me nightmares.
ReplyDeleteDisco pony is Disco Stu.
ReplyDeletemind=blown
Those eyes scare me...
ReplyDeleteOH COME ON!!!
ReplyDeleteBest moment in pony history?
I hereby submit the names Brilliant Cut, Cabochon, and Pendeloque for the pony jeweler.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't arm wrestling depend on leverage? Can any experts on arm wrestling please discuss?
ReplyDeleteIn "Feeling Pinkie Keen", the delivery truck that dropped stuff on Twilight looks like it had rubber tires, so they're not exactly new.
ReplyDeleteAnimation quality has ramped up? I beg to differ. It's still good, but a lot of those new faces are squarely in the Uncanny Valley.
ReplyDeleteThe jelly stallion looks like Derpy, but with blue eyes.
ReplyDeleteI was sorely disappony that there was nothing pertaining to Spike X Rarity in this episode. Seriously, a Valentine's Episode without mentioning that pairing is like... is like... it's like Pinkie Pie without her effing candy! It's just wrong ;3; But overall, I adored the episode, and it was nice to see Big Mac talking some more. Cheerilee definitely deserves more of a spotlight, much like Miss Keene got later on in Powerpuff Girls. I also liked the nice little funeral they threw in there (didn't notice it the first time, tbh), and Derpy with "Whooves" was a nice shout-out to the fanfic community. Overall, a solid 9.5/10 episode, imo.
ReplyDeleteAlright episode, definitely plenty of laughs. I do agree Cheerilee had a whole, "Not this again" attitude when the CMCs confronted her.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder if the book with princess and the prince is foreshadowing of a future episode as others are thinking.
Yes indeed, I caught the Twilight shot too you pointed out and thought, "Oh boy, here we go."
To add to the conspiracy, the tire is in a lower deposit then the horseshoe on the left. I predict the Mayans are right, world ends this year and in about 10,000 years by the layers, ponies rise to be the dominate species.
I love how they use the paint splatter backgrounds when something suddenly takes a suddenly creepy/weird direction in the OHGODWHY realm. Same with some of the eerie music.
ReplyDelete@Consequence Hugh Jelly. You, sir, win a day in Equestria.
ReplyDeleteMy reactions
ReplyDelete1. Twist/Snails ships have now been sunk
2. Looks like FIM is going in the Adventure Time direction, with the implied post-apocalyptic world
3. I'm inclined to attribute Big Mac's crazy strength to the power of the Love Poison
4. Jelly Pony is officially the strangest BG pony in the show
The animation is definitely becoming remarkable. The four-legged skipping alone is worth watching at quarter-speed to appreciate how completely natural it looks.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't too keen on the Cutie Mark Crusaders in the first series, and their song in The Show Stoppers was possibly my least favourite part of the whole show. This episode has finally driven me to love them.
I'm calling it now, Jelly pony is Derpy's brother.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P pony in coffin it kinda feels weird to address death in this show but hey! I guess it adds to it's depth
ReplyDeleteI would like to call Jelly pony Derpy's dad. time travel is weird. But I would imagine him with a surfer voice like Crush in Finding Nemo.
ReplyDeleteCaramel is totally Bipony
ReplyDeleteThis episode was so much awesome fun. I love the CMC so much! I've always liked Cheerilee from the start--she's just such a friendly, positive and enthusiastic pony! I've always smiled whenever she got some screen time. :D
ReplyDelete"I guess Dash cheated in that arm wrestling competition with Applejack or something."
ReplyDeleteNah, she's just awesome like that. I think it's more of a Big Mac thing than an Earth Pony thing.
I've named the pony stuck in the 70's Roxbury.
ReplyDeleteThis was an enjoyable episode from start to finish. Sweetie Belle has the voice of an angel when she sings and the song is so pleasant to the ears. Hopefully she'll get more numbers in the future.
This episode was worth every second that I waited to see it. I'm proud to say I didn't cave into the pressure and waited until yesterday to see it. Though I did have to avoid a lot of website that I usually frequent for fear of seeing spoilers.
ReplyDeleteNow the episode...well, when the CMC is involved, you know something wacky is gonna go down. And this show definitely delivered in the wacky department. It's a wonder the town survived at all. But overall, I was very pleased with this episode. A couple fall a tad short sometimes, but I didn't really see it with this one.
Poor Cheerilee. I know the feeling; teaching rambunctious youngsters like them can be rather trying at times. She seems more up to the challenge than me, though.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that colt gets all the attention because he brings in delicious treats for the class.
Twilight spending Hearts and Hooves Day...studying. Why am I not surprised?
I totally busted up at that rainbow. I need a vacuum that can suck up color like that; it'd make Kool-Aid a much less problematic drink.
Re: Daisy's dunce cap: If I recall, it's because Cheerilee's too busy making googly eyes at Big Mac to teach.
Wait, that was a funeral? *checks episode* Yeah, looks like that was a funeral. Wonder why I didn't notice that before.
In closing, I'm glad Big Mac got more lines; I just wish they hadn't been so...yeah...
@Derpmind
ReplyDeleteWhat's there to discuss. It's the Scrooge Mcduck principle, of course not everyone watched Ducktales or have seen that specified episode.
I loved this episode. Cheerilee was a seriously underated pony and I'm so happy to see her get her due.
ReplyDeleteThe CMC's really need their cutie marks in alchemy, two major potions in two separate episodes. Their victory trot was so darn cute I squee'd out loud.
I could go on all day about the merits of this episode, but i think Hugh Jelly's face sums it up nicely: Me Gusta
On the Earth Pony strength thing... my theory was always that each of the three kinds of ponies had their own advantages. Unicorns, of course, were magical and commanded day and night. Pegasi, naturally, can fly and manipulate the weather. Earth ponies, I reasoned, were physically superior and had a connection with the land. Alicorns, like Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, all of the above. Genetic jackpot if you're born an alicorn.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I called foul on Rainbow Dash beating Applejack in the hoofwrestling contest too. I brush that off as being plot constructive.
Scootaloo fetching all the ingredients for the love poison (especially the rainbow) was the highlight of the episode for me
ReplyDeleteWell gee what a subtle way show ponies do die. . .
ReplyDeleteIN SONG xD
Great episode. Surprised you didn't highlight Scoots plucking clouds ONLY with the aide of the other fillies :P
So, Dr. Whooves x Derpy is now canon? THIS EXPLAINS ALL HER WEIRD APPEARANCES!
Nightmare Night: Derpy saves Luna by disabling a dangerous trap that was designed to poison Alicorns by UNPLUGGING the trap draining away all the bad apples!
Cutie Pox: The Well; just finished vanquishing vanquishing the little pony girl that was trapped in the well over a hundred years ago by fulfilling an odd ritual that inadvertently saves Lyra and Bon-Bon from the curse after Lyra made them watch "The Ring".
Find a Pet: She actually WAS there delivering a chicken suit to Scoots, with Dr. Whooves warning that the future is in grave peril should Scoots end up as Rainbow's pet.
After Derpy consoled Scoots that being herself and winning Rainbow over that way was best for all pony kind!
And of course SUMMER SUN FESTIVAL during Twilight's foalhood. The Doctor decided to prove to Derpy he really WAS a Time Lord by taking her with him as he tried to help Celestia ensure a certain filly made it to see the event that day.
AND THAT'S HOW EQUESTRIA WAS MADE!
Don't forget, Caramel can clone himself, in both male and female versions...one of those clones could EASILY be straight...but Big Macintosh still didn't cheat on the REAL Caramel!
ReplyDeleteOther options: the entire episode was a dream sequence shared by the CMC, or someone gave Caramel a love poison offscreen, or somepony needed a beard for H&H day.
Don't worry, we'll find a way to keep Caramac together!
I've said it elsewhere, but I really think the best thing about this episode was how they left it open for any shipping the fan community want to do...even though they made a Cheerimac episode, they recognized that they couldn't actually get away with making that a canon couple. As a fan, that makes me even happier than hearing RBD call Derpy by her name!
It was a cool episode no doubt. I've noticed the improvement in animation from Season One for quite some time. Its really remarkable to see, and this episode demonstrated that a lot.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode so, so much. Rewatched it already, and trying to resist the urge to watch it a third time. SO MUCH PONI.
ReplyDeleteI want a looping animated gif of the CMC's anticipation faces when it looks like Cheerilee and Big Mac might be about to kiss.
@CityFlyer502
ReplyDeleteI'm also glad I waited to watch the episode. It was great in my opinion. I'm also very glad the CMC got another song.
This was a really great episode... the show just keeps getting better and better.
ReplyDelete@Watchit @StrangeNoise @MyBoyJ
I didn't notice the priest's collar the first time through either... but as someone studying for the Catholic priesthood, I got a kick out of it. It's like a ponified version of my future self - right down to the glasses and pipe.
It doesn't even have to mean that Christianity is canon in Equestria (certainly nothing else would support it)... I'm still amused.
@Stephen
I didn't particularly appreciate your comment, but I will still love and tolerate.
I'm sure I heard a bit of Walt Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice at the potion mixing part!
ReplyDeleteI love how we leap to "post apocalyptic earth" before we consider that a carriage could use rubber tires too. Not like there's anything that makes it a uniquely human invention more than anything else in the series. And hey, if it came from somewhere paved (like Canterlot and Manehattan are implied to be) they'd make more sense than wooden wheels. Not that anypony's going to listen, but think before you write. That idea has been used wrong a thousand times to every readable one.
ReplyDeletebtw, about doctor whooves being "splashy". no, doctor whooves is doing what he usually finds himself doing shortly after an apparently peaceful, even romantic, moment:
ReplyDeleteHe's running for his life!
Now imagining a whole doctor whooves episode going on with him and Derpy saving ponyville on hearts and hooves day and the antics of the CMC going on in the background...
@eaglehooves
ReplyDeleteThat's true, and also, even though my headcanon *does* have this being far-future earth, I don't think the material tyres are made of would survive long enough for their civilisation to get to the point it's at. I think we are certain of at least a few thousand years of recorded equestrian history; but there's probably deep - or at least knee-deep - time before that for the ponies to get sentient after we're out of the way.
So I agree, especially what with the depth it's at in an already inhabited location, that could well be a tyre of pony manufacture.
@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteI thought every appearance of Dr. Whooves after Super Speedy Cider Squeezy would depict him with a tie, like Derpy's eyes.
All I know is rarity's gonna be PISSED when she gets back to her boutique.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that the filly WAS wanting to give the card to twist, and here's why:
ReplyDeletePorkins can't see through twist, so there would be no reason for her to be hiding the card behind her if it was going to porkins
THANK YOU PONY GODS FOR MAKING CARAMEL STRAIGHT. I can finally like him again.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Derpy/Doctor is best ship.
I think the crew should stop introducing random unnamed ponies and start expounding on the background characters we have already. We're due for a "Tales of Interest" style mashup episode on the background chars.
it has to be far future, not near future, or they'd be living amongst our ruins in a barely habitable world. Rather, there's been time enough to bury us, and for the ecosystem to recover. All that's left are some cultural echoes, and why that should be is maybe material enough.
ReplyDeleteIf one tyre could survive, then our crumbling roads and towers and wastelands would be everywhere, along with mountains of more tyres...
I actually love small pony at 3:56. His cutie mark is a step ladder- his special talent is being short, and he's so cute!
ReplyDeleteAlso: blank flank super tall pony?
... so they remember that funerals are officiated by someone wearing a white collar, and still do it, with no idea of its origin.
ReplyDelete*sees tire*
ReplyDeleteYou Maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to hell!
Pony death NOT confirmed in Equestria. That is CLEARLY a buffet that will be opened after the candle auction is over.
ReplyDeleteOMFG, that filly w/ the flower cutie mark ;_;
ReplyDeleteLESBIANISM IS CANON. Quick, someone warn Social Conservatives! The liberal media conspiracy is trying to make your kids gay! Again!
Video Games? WTF. I feel like they threw it in because they thought "hey all kids grow up w/ video games, it'd be kinda alien if the CMC didn't know what a video game was". But those were arcade machines. And today's kids would be like "WHAT'S AN ARCADE?" LOL :(
Lots of things have tires. No need to overreact.
...
Although that's an awfully BIG tire. Hmmmm. And a rubber tire should in theory last millions of years so...................SURE! WHY NOT! What Homfrog said.
I'm still sticking with "Zebras are the Original Equine" tho. And anypony who disagrees is Racist™.
Overall, I think this was a very cute and funny episode.
ReplyDeleteFor the second week in a row, there was a moment where I was one poorly-timed sip of liquid away from frying my computer. Last week it was Screw Loose, this week it was the vacuum on the rainbow.
As far as the little details, I didn't notice many, but that tire... for some reason it seems genius. They could have easily left that spot blank or used a rock, but the tire just has a different effect.
Also, I thought it was adorable that the CMCs wanted so badly for their teacher to be happy that they went to all the trouble. But when things didn't go the way they planned, their confused and appalled reactions were priceless.
The only thing I didn't think fit too well was the Jelly pony. I wonder if they just took the first rhyme that made a kid laugh, and told the storyboarders and animators to go to town?
Overall, I liked this episode a lot, and I'm glad I waited. Now I can't wait for the recently announced "It's About Time"... That one already is lined up as a contender for my favorite episodes, and there aren't even any screenshots out for it!
@StrangeNoise While I keep them as parallel instead of series in my headcanon, I don't rule it out. I've read a few quite interesting premises, and am more than willing to suspend my canon for the sake of a good story, but it's done bad so often... Anything involving humanity killing itself off is usually a huge stretch (bonus points if nukes are involved) and poorly explained. I'm following a Lyra fic right now where she's convinced there's more to Equestria's history than Celestia will admit, and the wild mass guessing in the comments is painful (and thankfully consistently wrong).
ReplyDeleteSome lols I made on my little brony related to this episode

Between the silly pony with tons of balloons and the uptight rich pony being shown onscreen at the same time, and a later scene with a pony who's strangle obsessed with , I related to the ponies in the song very well.
ReplyDeletePony-death almost indesputibly canon. No matter how much I may want it to actually be a buffet. That's uh. Understandable, but still takes away some of my ability to consider it a land of perfect safeness free for all to explore. And it also justifies some RP characters I've never been too at-ease with on some of the MU*s.
Stripperbelle. I'm sorry, but seeing Sweetie work that pole was definitely one of my top highlights of the episode barring how much adorable and hnnng was involved in general. (Action-Bloom clinging to her Bro.? CMC Bullet Time effects and Apple Bloom being able to float for very brief moments of time? So cute. So AWESOME. Or is that the radicalness category? I get them mixed up.)
Did I mention the pony with the balloons and the fact that they brought back the helium tank we saw way back in The Ticket Master during Pinkie's imagination spot? I'm way more thrilled about that than I should be.
As well as a party *at* the school with balloons, so we can safely infer that either none of the ponies we've seen on-screen so far have a problem with balloons being around, or that the ones that do have an issue with them were probably removed from the room before the scene took place.
Still kinda wondering what it is the CMC are studying in the first place, though.
actually yeah, looks like tyre rubber lasts an appallingly, shockingly long time, although not necessarily still in the shape of a tyre. i guess that now means, why aren't they all withers-deep in our old rotting tyres? :-)
ReplyDeleteI think the cmc is adorable and Hugh Jelly is best pony!
ReplyDeleteI think the cmc is adorable and Hugh Jelly is best pony!
ReplyDelete2 things: Minor but there none the less.
ReplyDeleteThe first one is Big mac, I see him more as the marvel super hero The Hulk. BIG MAC STRONGEST THERE IS!
and 2: The pony in the jelly... you totally missed the internet joke with the "ME GUSTA" face! dropping the ball Eq D on this internet shout out.
Normally I don't really like the episodes with such limited appearances by the Mane 6, but this was an exception. Seriously, this episode had some of the funniest moments in the show so far.
ReplyDeleteOne small detail that got me was how the opening scene music was the same as the one of the pilot (where Twilight is reading the story of Nightmare Moon). I don't know about you guys, but I nostalgia'd hard, remembering the first time I watched this show. Man, so many memories flooded back to me.
ReplyDelete@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDelete>"zebras are the original equine"
I'm disagreeing because that isn't biologically true. equus quagga is not an ancestor of equus ferus, they share a common ancestor somewhere in the equidae family
this episode was great and i loved the song!
ReplyDeleteThere is a dunce cap cause Cheerilee wouldn't be able to teach anymore.
ReplyDeleteI feel REALLY bad for that little filly that dropped the Hearts and Hooves Day card.
ReplyDeleteThe Chubby pony hasn't gotten a name yet? Also I thought the flower filly (she needs a name too) wanted to give her card to the chubby colt but Twist beat her to it.
ReplyDeleteYes the animation has taken a mark upgrade from season one (which at the time I thought was amazing), and it keeps getting better.
I am surprised you did not mention the jam pony's MeGusta face.
Overall this was a great episode.
*looks at disco pony*
ReplyDeleteHarry Tipper is best pony.
Musical episodes tend to be keepers (I said tend) and this was no exception. McCarthy is an excellent writer, and they clearly let her take some risks. The writing even reminded me of Hertzfeldt's "Lily and Jim" at points, which was nice.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, staff.
You know, i have another theory why Big Mac was able to pull a whole house this day but AJ had lost to RD in arm wrestling.
ReplyDeleteRemember that episode about how Equestria was founded? How Clover the Clever was able to call forth a burning Heart, something she had never been able before nor heard by other unicorns magic? She said that she had felt the feelings, the friendship of the other ponies in her heart which seemed to be responsible for this power-up and blast of magic power. Same for Twilight when the Sparkle of friendship shined in her eye as she realized how happy it made her to have her friends with her to stand against NMM. Or when Rainbow made her second Sonic Rainbow after so many years to save Rarity. And so on.
In short, each pony has magic inside them: For Unicorns its their horn, for Pegasi its their wings and for Earth ponies its their legs. And while their magic alone can do already great stuff like leviating things, forming and pushing clouds or making flowers and other plants bloom, it can get much more powerful.
With the magic of their hearts, if its filled with positiv feelings of friendship, love, devotion etc. their magic gets powered by those feelings: Unicorns can cast great magic, Pegasi fly much much much faster and earthponies gets super strong.
That´s just an asumption of mine ofc, but one i´ll use one day in my fic if i ever get time/courage to write it down.^^
I loved this episode! Personally, definitely one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI especially how it allowed for some good character development. Cheerilee was really given her time to shine, and the CMCs were just adorable. Sweetie Belle has an amazing voice! I'm glad Big Mac was given some more lines (they were hilarious), but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't.... more. Yeah. Someday, maybe.
Also, Hugh Jelly pony is now best pony. ;P
Seth, y u no mention the "epic" romantic nicknames of Big Mac and Cheerilee? D:
ReplyDelete@Altercation
ReplyDeleteHonestly I think that's the conclusion most people would come to. Unless they are specifically looking for that sort of thing...
On a related note, Snips and Snails seem to have fallen off the face of Equestria (though I'm not sure many people care).
As for the priest, I'm sure they worship Celestia (and possibly Luna). She's basically a living pony god.
You don't have to board DERPYxDOCTOR is best ship....everypony already knows. I liked seeing Big Mac get a big speaking part. If they had him read lines from Blue Hawaii you'd think you were listening to Elvis. I think they could expand the CMC story arc with a side appearance or small speaking part for Dinky.
ReplyDeleteAll and all, I would say this this was probably one of the weaker CMC episodes. However, I still really enjoyed it, the reason why just kept changing every five minutes or so. I personally would have preferred that the episode had stuck with Cheerilee and Big Mac because their actions before and after the love potion really did a lot to advance their characters for no more time than they got to DO that (even if, and maybe even BECAUSE, they were just good friends). Aside from that, the episode was full of typical CMC hijinks, which are pretty fun anyway. Still, more Cheerilee and Big Mac in the future would be fun.
ReplyDeleteI cant believe that no pony pointed out that during that videogame cutscreen and before sweetiee belle ( sorry for misspells) comes in, theres a colt that has an hourglass cutie mark that is not Doctor Wooves.
ReplyDelete>earth thousands of years in the future
ReplyDeletePost-Apocalypse.
And then there was the time Studio B flat out put a fetishist in the show. Seriously, just like at Hugh Jelly's fafial expression. It just screams "the jelly is everywhere and I love it."
ReplyDelete@Jebediah Oldenheimer
ReplyDeleteDoesn't have to be an apocalypse. Can just be time enough for our story to wind down.
This is surprisingly in depth. D-:
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm new here :-)
@naahdude That's what it looked like to me too.
ReplyDeleteBTW I think that chubby/eaty pony looks a lot like a certain sfw food net celeb: here is a SFW Lookslike I made at chzbrgr
ReplyDeletehttp://cheezburger.com/View/5828302080
@ThyPony Ah, so I wasn't the only one to notice that! Big Mac wins!
ReplyDelete@Daniel G.
ReplyDeleteI said it before, Applejack called him "Big Mac" in the Cutie Pox.
@Silver Wind Neigh.
ReplyDelete@stile I think you may be digging a bit there bro.
ReplyDelete@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteNope, post-apocalypse. We died off, time passed, earth balanced itself out to normality and what didn't stay the same mutated or evolved into sentient ponies and mythological creatures. Magic is nature using the residual radiation to its potential. And lots of other things. The end.
i just noticed (fifth viewing i think) the potion bubbles with heart-shaped bubbles
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how they do it, but somehow this show manages to get better and better with each episode!
ReplyDeleteWhat is with this fandom and making everybody gay?
ReplyDeleteShe clearly was going to give it to the fat ass colt (with Snips and Snails in that class it's no wonder he gets all the girls)
