It's episode roundup time, where we dig way too far into absolutely every single aspect of an episode with a whole bunch of images.
This was by far the most 4th wall breaking, insane Pinkie ever. They really took her to a whole new level.
Continue on after the break!
First off, we finally have a confirmation on Rose's name. I don't know if that was inevitably going to be her name at the start, or if they picked ours for it, but at least it's canon now!
We also get a look into the other sentient beings inhabiting Equestria. Apparently they have wages, and shop, just like the ponies!
And of course, Cranky Doodle Donkey, the co-star of the episode.
Plus his love interest, Matilda. I guess donkeys only have neat names half the time!
It looks like Ponyville is governed by more than just Mayor Mare. They all still look like snobs though! I wonder if we will ever see an episode dedicated to her?
Then we have this pony. I don't know what you guys have named her, but for some reason she reminds me of an OC pony from Deviant art. I guess it's those trendy glasses or something! I for one welcome our overly tanned overlord.
And of course Derpy. Can't forget her obviously.
We also have a name for the old guy from the funeral in the last episode. Meet Mr. Waddle! Lets see some fanfics about him! I bet he's a super hero in disguise.
Speaking of Super Hero Powers....
Pinkie Pie makes Celestia look like Snails. Seriously, she has so many insane abilities.
PARTICLE EXPLOSION
SHADOW CLONE JUTSU
PATH OF THE MOUNTAIN TECHNIQUE
GRAVITY REVERSAL MODE
EYES OF ZOMM (If you get that reference, you are awesome, or just really nerdy)
Yes, our little party pony is just overflowing with potential.
Luckily she thinks in felt, so I doubt ponyville is in any sort of serious danger. Hopefully her powers will be kept in check by this odd disability. Or maybe it's an advantage? Only time will tell I suppose...
We also have a ton of continuity in this episode. These two made a comeback in the beginning.
And of course, nothing tops this. Cereal said he actually clapped when this popped up. Cereal never claps, Cereal is serious business. Rainbow Dash the egghead is the best thing ever.
Especially this part.
We also learn about Pinkie Pie's literal... welcome wagon. Always full of surprises.
Twilight joins Facebook
And Cranky Doodle Donkey goes Johnny Bravo mode.
With a whopping four songs total, this was definitely one of the more musical episodes we have seen so far. I'm sure "Smile Smile Smile" will be remixed to oblivion within the next week or so. Even if it was leaked, I know a lot of musicians didn't modify it any until the higher quality track became available.
And I think that about covers it! I'm sure Pinkie Pie jumped up a few tiers on everyone's best pony lists. She seems to have found a good balance between obnoxious and just plain awesome. Hopefully we get one more episode dedicated specifically to her by the end of the season!

WOO!
ReplyDeleteI liked this episdoe. So much diversity!
ReplyDeletethird
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie is best reality warper.
ReplyDeleteReading Dash is best Dash
ReplyDeletePinkie is so OP, she must be nerfed!
ReplyDeleteI liked the episode. I also like how Cranky Doodle Donkey did not murder her. I am not sure I could have held back the urge.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the MLP Wikia, Rose has already been named!
ReplyDeleteIn Bridle Gossip, even.
Going to give it a once-over to make sure, though.
Yay.
ReplyDeleteI liked it, but it lowered Pinkie below Rarity for me.
ReplyDeleteI found it too goddamned annoying.
Definitely not first
ReplyDeleteNot socks... but leg-warmers. Close enough!
ReplyDeleteNeat fact (for me): Richard Newman voiced Cranky, who voiced Rhinox from Beast wars (and various other shows).
ReplyDeleteAlso, Pinkie was counting how many "evers" cranky said. That's 4 evers, which is "forever". I thought that was hilarious.

ReplyDeletePinkie Knows she's a cartoon and exploits that fact to it's fullest potential.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching this episode and all the crazy things Pinkie Pie does, I'm convinced there's a 30% chance Pinkie Pie is really a low-level draconequus in disguise, only not evil.
ReplyDelete"Actually, my real name is Mirth, the Spirit of Laughter and Joy. Nice to meetcha!"
This episode was incredible to simply put.
ReplyDeleteTwilight joins Face-book! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThis episode explores Pinkie's neurosis, the compulsion to make people smile. Her self-worth depends on it.
And look at the hit counter! Almost at 123456789!
I loved Cranky. Awesome episode.
ReplyDelete@wackypony
ReplyDeleteI think you need to rename yourself "Seriouspony". I've been watching your posts for awhile and you're anything but "wacky".
this episode was alright. not my favortie. im lookin forward to fluttersy next week!
ReplyDeleteThe Shows creators are definently aware of our 4th wall breaking persona for Pinkie Pie....
ReplyDelete0.04% integrity and dropping... One day she will be free
I don't think I stopped smiling the entire episode, so I feel that's a great accomplishment on Studio B's efforts. Congratulations on another amazing episode!
ReplyDeleteVery good episode!
ReplyDeleteFinally I can listen to the song :D
@Batty Gloom
ReplyDeletethe wacky part of me is that my thought process is rather irrational at times. I just put on a serious face so i don't go insane.
I say she isn't really breaking the laws of physics. It's just through her eyes, how she seesthe world.
ReplyDeleteI'd need to hear it again, but I thought the priest pony's name was Wattle, not Waddle...
ReplyDeletehipster pie is best pony!
ReplyDeleteTwilight joins facebook.
ReplyDeleteThat's priceless. Thanks for making my day xD
A really nice episode, yeah. The felt animation was awesome and the sheer number of songs surprised me somewhat, to be honest.
ReplyDeleteNaming the female donkey "Mathilda" was kinda boring, though. Well, a tiny complaint for an overall very fun episode.
...I totally bet that Rainbow Dash is a closet cosplayer.
I love the song, though.
ReplyDeletethe other songs ruined the episode, though.
i've heard Smile over 110 times
THis post is tagged with Episode Announcement, but it's an Episode Followup.
ReplyDeleteLiterally can't stop SMILING!!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, look at the green government pony's flank - she has a mallet there! So, crimes and judicial system officially confirmed in Equestria? O_o
ReplyDeleteYou forgot how she made the jump rope continue with no one holding it.
ReplyDeleteThis was so amazing episode (full of joy)! Especially "Smile, smile, smile" it became my favourite MLP song!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's actually "in Deed", not "Indeed". And Rose's name was mentioned in Bridle Gossip. Just some errors ;)
ReplyDeleteDidn't anybody notice the Dexter shout out?!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9vuF9ySw0A&context=C3e0ab8dADOEgsToPDskLRdmaFks5uANLKStysUIqI
No mention of how Cranky's 'Johnny Bravo' look is very close to a certain moustached sea serpent we know and love?
ReplyDeleteRose was referred to by name in bridle gossip
ReplyDeleteJust had to love this episode, all the continuity, songs, smiles, Pinkie, Cranky, and just EVERYTHING!
ReplyDeletefour comments from me:
ReplyDelete1. i can't stop listening to 'Smile'. it's just so good.
2. beaver pinkie is oddly adorable.
3. the continuity was awesome. especially dash reading daring do. that was only last week!
4. someppony did the math. the number pinkie gave for how far away her birthday is? that's the original airdate of 'party of one' where they celebrated her birthday.
I loved this episode it made me smile sooooooo much I reply liked it also that flashback reminded me of UP
ReplyDeleteNaruto pun, really?
ReplyDeletenice followup though!
Did anybody realize that by having a judge pony, crime, law & punishment are confirmed?
You know, Season 2 has increased my appreciation for certain members of the Mane 6. Pinkie and Dash weren't very high on my "best pony" list, nor was Rarity, but that's changed.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Twilight and Fluttershy are still the top contenders for Best Pony. It's just that the others are narrowing the gap.
Wait how does pinkie pie go up on my list when she's already my favorite ... Never mind it's pinkie pie I'm sure she will find a way
ReplyDeleteI zoomed in in 1080P. The Title of Rainbow's book looks like Sapphire Stone, but the image looks like it goes with Gryphon's Goblet.
ReplyDeleteSome might say Pinkie Pie is annoying because of her behavior, but I truly believe she's the type of friend everyone should have; a beacon of happiness that doesn't let go. Even a smile's too much for most people, despite how easy it is to perform and how it brightens anyone's day.
ReplyDeleteShe and Applejack will always share my top spot for favorite pony, because they both represent elements which are sorely lacking nowadays; Laughter and Honesty.
Ramblings aside, this episode was the S2 equivalent of Winter Wrap Up; not much story, but an overload of pure joy and happiness to make up for it. I loved it.
Now that I get a second look at her, the young mare next to Mayor Mare (that's a lotta mares)looks a little bit like Junebug. I miss Junebug. We need another Junebug appearance.
ReplyDeletePinkie is now second fav on my list
ReplyDeleteA new Pinkie Pie Underneath!!! ^_^
ReplyDeleteEye of Zomm! Wow, never expected to see an EverQuest reference on EQD. Long live Norrath!
ReplyDelete@Batty Gloom
ReplyDeleteHm, Mirth, eh? I might just have to remember that...
Screw the Physics....She's Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteRoseluck already had a name, it was mentioned before.
ReplyDeleteShe even has a toy with said name
Best episode!
ReplyDeleteI thought the second wing kindve looked like Steven Magnet's hair, to be honest XD
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, wow, lots and lots to this episode! So crazy!
I love that Rainbow Is reading now it just made me jump with joy when I saw that also that flashback should have been mentioned it reminded me of UP for some reason overall great episode, great world building, great music overall awesome I approve!!!
ReplyDeleteI dont like Pinkie much, but this was one of best episodes ever, nuff said.
ReplyDelete@Fluttertroll
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie's been doing this stuff since the second episode, though. She just cranked it up to 11 to try to win over C.D.D.
The use of silhouettes and felt had a very SHAFT feel to it, I hope the creators branch out into more types of animation in future episodes, also more surrealism would be good. But yea about the episode, it was great and I'm not even a big Pinkie Pie fan. The continuity, Smile Smile Smile, and CDD's back story were the highlights for me
ReplyDeleteI went from really liking Pinkie Pie to loving her thanks to this episode. She was hilarious and in top form. Especially loved that song, so uplifting and just damn wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAlso much love for the creators and their nods to continuity. Dash reading more Daring Do was practically squee-worthy.
"Twilight joins facebook"
ReplyDelete*Facehoof*
There were a ton of self-references in this episode. I really love how they keep building this universe up. Still have yet to see tank again though.
It's the Mare Family, with Mother Mayor Mare, Father Lawful Mare and daughter Judy "Judge" Mare
ReplyDelete:D
Also, happy 123456789 views, EqD!
Ohh, THAT's who Cranky reminded me of when he wore that wig. Man, Johnny Bravo was awesome.
ReplyDeleteAs for the ep, I was happy of course to hear Smile, Smile, Smile, but Pinkie kind of irritated me... which is surprising because she's one of my favourite ponies. I dunno, I guess I just knew what it felt like to be Cranky in those situations. :x
BUT I did like her breaking the fourth wall and her thinking in felt!
@Tin Can
ReplyDeleteThank you. Someone else noticed it. It's Steven Magnet's hair, not really Johnny Bravo.
Top 3 moments for me:
ReplyDelete3) Rainbow hanging out in the library with Twi, reading.
2) The felt animation for Pinkie's thought process - brilliant touch, as far as I'm concerned, and yet another example of how dedicated this show crew is to making awesome productions.
1) The Smile song. I managed, somehow, to avoid all spoilers from the leak. I am so very happy I did, I cannot imagine I'd have enjoyed it *half* as much if I'd heard it out of context first. As it was, though, the whole sequence had me grinning from ear to ear - it is DEFINITELY my new favorite song, by an overwhelming margin.
I swear to freakin god I couldnt stop smiling the whole time.
ReplyDeleteI know it's too early to say this, but in 2013, the Smile song should be definitely be considered for a 2012 Emmy nomination, if Daniel Ingram will still want to pursue that.
ReplyDeleteEvery Pinkie Pie song is enough to make you smile, but the one at the beginning of this episode was astronomically uplifting and heartwarming. THIS is what we should be throwing at the terrorists!
ReplyDeleteTo make a long story short, another wonderful product of Lauren Faust (and Hasbro)!
The song is too epic.
ReplyDeleteI literally Rolled on the floor laughing at the twilight pic's caption. Don't know why that hit me so hard.
ReplyDeleteAnd, as always (this time too late) here goes my review of the episode!
ReplyDeletehttp://awthredestim.blogspot.com/2012/02/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic_19.html
Let me know what you think of it on the comments guys!
Oh, btw, the picture of Mayor Mare with the other two "snobs" made me think of the three branches of the American government.
ReplyDeleteMayor Mare: Executive
Pony to right: Judicial
Pony to left: Legislative
*facehoof* Rose has been named already in the show to be Rose. Bridle Gossip anyone?
ReplyDeleteI want to point out, that brown mare is NOT new, she appeared in bird in the hoof(7:06), the funny part is, well...
ReplyDeletePinkie pretty much kicks her in the face there.
This episode was just so off the wall. I loved it for the most part, except for when Pinkie went too far. Thankfully it all worked out in the end though.
ReplyDeleteSo much singing, so much happiness, so many powers for Pinkie. She can even bring her imagination into the real world (see her holding the felt check).
When I heard "Smile Smile Smile," the first thing that came to mind was:
ReplyDelete"Marmalade's from Scotland,
Rugs from Pakistan
Mexico has jumping beans
And cars are from Japan..."
I wonder if that was intentional?
The pony from the song that you wondered what her name was? That's Apple Cobbler. Not a new pony.
ReplyDeleteThe pony having a tan reminds me of one of the mares in the Apple family - a rather special looking one, considering that she has no role whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash is the cutest thing ever. Tis a fact.
one of my all time favorite episodes ^o^ Pinkie has always been my favorite ever since i started watching the show, how can you not love that crazy pony <3 Addicted to smile, awesome song!! happy I avoided listening to it when it got leaked ^^
ReplyDeleteGreat episode.
ReplyDeleteI liked the continuity and the felt animation was an amazing touch.
Dash reading was awesome, was she still on the same book though?
Pinkie was hillarious and the songs were catchy and briliantly well...Pinkie, the message behind the Smile one was very fitting.
@Yellow 13
ReplyDeleteThank you! I thought I was the only one who remembered that.
I loved this episode so much, and I discussed it in further detail over at my new blog. For anyone interested in my thoughts, please check out http://chimicherrychonga.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteThe felt animation was probably my most favorite part. That was genious!
I suspect that the governing ponies must play a role sometime this season... They're way too specific to have been created to just stand there during a song that has nothing to do about them.
ReplyDeleteI think somepony is going to be called up before the judge, or perhaps we'll see a bit more of the politics of the land with Princess Cadence.
And really, because of my Junebug withdrawl and the fact that she looks superficially like her, I'm saying the Judge is her sister. That's how we do these things, right?
Fun episode! Pinkie still thinks inside the chimney when necessary.
@LosKnoggos
this is my new favorite episode.
ReplyDeletealso, felt pinkie is best pinkie.
Eye of Zomm, Everquest reference (so is my name~)
ReplyDeleteNo picture of Pinkie Hooves?
ReplyDeleteNo mention of Dinky? Am I the only one who noticed her jumping rope with Pinky and Scootaloo?
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought that was Applejack sunbathing. Now I can see that the color and hair are slightly off.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: how many Eeyore jokes have been made already
ReplyDelete@Celestia I believe Dash was reading the same book she cracked at the very end of "Read it and Weep", "Daring Do and the Griffon's Goblet" or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI never doubted Pinkie's potential for greatness. She has always, and will always be BEST PONY!
ReplyDeleteThis episode proved she can be adorable, kind-hearted, and bursting with happiness that can't help but be felt by everypony around her. ;)
I liked how Pinkie allegorically helped her sad self up from a ditch.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking this as canonization of a mood disorder issue for Pinkie. Not that she is insane or bipolar, just that her mood can swing very low.
@Canvas Wolf Doll
ReplyDelete4. Not so, unfortunately. The date on which this episode premiered, February 18, is 71 days prior to the date that Party of One premiered, April 29. In this episode, Pinkie says her birthday is in 75 days.
We must have moar reading rainbow
ReplyDeleteI compared the wig to the hair of the sea serpent from the second episode... not johnny bravo.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who found it mildly creepy that the cow in the beginning was seemingly going to drink her own milk?
ReplyDeletePeople claim the tanning pony is apple cider, one of AJ's cousins
ReplyDeleteAnd some people also think the ponies standing next to mare mayor are her husband and daughter.
That was an awesome episode, but im not to thrilled at this 3 week set up. Epic pinkie pie episode follwed by same old every fluttershy boring episode then back to epic time travel twilight episode! Still at least the next episode will be somewhat entertaining if nothing else.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Pinkie's "Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip" at the beginning? Doesn't that remind anyone of the martians from Sesame Street?
ReplyDeletewww.youtube.com/watch?v=TStPNqex3uA
after this episode, pinkie is now my 2nd favorite character of the mane 6
ReplyDeleteI wonder if she can fly bye wagging the tail of the beaver suit...
ReplyDeleteThen again it's shown she has flying abilities since 'Feeling Pinkie Keen' with a hydra as a motivator.
@Sethisto
ReplyDelete"This was by far the most 4th wall breaking, insane Pinkie ever."
Uh, I didn't see a single scene were Pinkie Pie "breaks the 4th wall." Not to be a Debbie Downer or just a jackass (heh), but breaking the 4th wall means acknowledging the audience, script, episode, stage, etc.
Having cool cartoon powers doesn't mean she breaks the 4th wall; it just means she has cool cartoon powers in....a cartoon. Daffy Duck doesn't break the 4th wall when he shows off his antics (though he DOES break the 4th wall by talking to the audience on occasion).
Just to continue, Pinkie Pie is well written in a way that she doesn't acknowledge her cartoon powers; they just come natural (I'm regarding her cartoon powers, not her "senses" shown in Pinkie Keen). If she actually KNEW she had these powers, and could use them out of context (e.g. whenever it wouldn't be funny), this still wouldn't be breaking the 4th wall.
I'm sure all of you knew everything I wrote above already. Just wanted to clarify.
My thoughts on the episode: Unlike the Cider song, I LOVED the Smile song. I found myself singing along which is rare for a first watch. Pinkie has certainly outdone her cartoon powers this time, and I loved every second of it. Hasbro won't stop changing my favorite episode this season. I can't choose from these last three. The four-ever joke was hilarious, and I really felt sad for Pinkie when she ruined his scrapbook. We've all been there. The felt animation was cute, and it's a glimpse inside Pinkie's adorable train of thought.
I still have to say Hearts and Hooves Day had the best faces, though.
Rose was also named by the blindbag naming guide. It shows her name under her model with the correct cutie mark and palette.
ReplyDeleteFace-book....Damit seth that was a horrible pun...
ReplyDelete@RainbowYoshi
ReplyDeleteTHANKS! i've been searching for her like "Fourever!"... if you get what i mean^^
Just purchased this episode on iTunes. Great episode! The good folks at DBX/Studio B don't disappoint that's for sure. Still pissed at iTunes though, I WANT HEARTS AND HOOVES! DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW I CAN GET IN CONTACT WITH HASBRO ABOUT THIS? I WANT H & H EPISODE SO BAD!
ReplyDelete@wackypony if you are talking about "Yankee Doodle" song ruining the episode, then I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot the Zecora cameo! We now know that her birthday is the day before Cherilee's.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I didn't like was that the ending became predictable when Cranky mentioned a "she". Of COURSE it's gonna be the only other donkey in the town.
BEST EPISODE EVER!!!!!! Also love all the puns and and notices here. Pinkie has been my faavotire from the start, nd now she should be your's too. Pinkie is bast pony, FORRREVEEEEERRRRRRRR!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso Smile Smile Smile is the catchiest song so far in the sho by far. ^^
ReplyDeleteas I keep saying, I wasn't really looking forward to this one. The premise seemed too simple. After watching it, though, It is easily in my top 5 favorites!
ReplyDelete@LosKnoggos For me that could count as a "Law and Order" reference.
ReplyDelete@equinox
ReplyDeletewoah man, we are all here to just enjoy a cartoon. Let's just all settle down. How about we don't tear down every episode of a cartoon you "claim" to love. Its all good and fun, I promise.
Everything in the post but what REALLY made it for me is the animation sequence during Smile Smile Smile. I actually watched it about 15 times. A lot happening in those 3 minutes:
ReplyDelete- I'll need to find out that that gait is that Pinkie uses when "marching" during the song. There's a quality to this animation that really hits me
- When Pinkie sings "When you are sad or blue" and points to the blue unicorn filly. I see what you did there, animators.
- The silhouette-style animation at about 3:47
- The self-skipping rope not long after that.
- At 4:08, the scene focused on Applebloom with the background moving. Nice touch.
- Betcha Applejack wouldn't be so happy if she'd just finished painting the barn.
- The movement and her expression at about 4:45.
- Pony Parkour at 4:10
- Pony politicans (BTW WHAT is that giant fan thingy behind them?)
- At 5:41 gray pony with purple mane: her cutie mark is a boot? Huh? Actually I noticed quite a few new cutie marks at that point.
- At 6:12 in the areal shot: The animators actually went through the trouble of animating Pinkie's hind legs moving. They could have simply done without. The result is that this movement looks a bit awkward for a pony, as it should. I find it to be an excellent touch
Good job Studio B/THX! Bravo!
Yeah...You just know I watched it while I was writing this comment. Now to go watch it again!
Pinkie Pie wields the most powerful magic known to ponykind...
ReplyDelete@PacketsPony
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Long post is long. Sorry.
When I heard "Smile Smile Smile," the first thing that came to mind was:
ReplyDelete"This can make US be friends with Iran, and the world comes in peace..." x-x
Seth, did you pull an EverQuest reference?
ReplyDeleteThat was totally Steven Magnets hair. And I thought it was Daisy who was mentioned in Bridle Gossip, not Rose...
ReplyDelete@Ironclad
ReplyDeleteI suppose you didn't get the level of sarcasm or bit of comedy in my post. As I said "I'm sure you all already knew this." Oh, and I'm not tearing down the cartoon, I'm tearing down Seth's comment.
By the way, to quote somebody, click "Reply" to the right of their post. That gives you a popup window, and at the bottom, you'll find a code in the comment box that you can copy back into your main window if you don't want to use the popup.
Still, I can't decide if the Smile song is my new favorite song. Find a Pet was by far my favorite up to that point. I had already heard the Smile song back when it was leaked, and I don't think I would've enjoyed it any more yesterday if I didn't hear it early.
You know, those cows probably have a pretty cushy gig. Getting paid to just sit around all day and give milk every so often…Sounds nice. Also, OH SWEET CELESTIA THOSE COWS ARE SO MINNESOTAN!!! *ahem*
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice Matilda's first appearance until I watched it again. Sneaky of you, writers!
Oh, my. Derpy in a St. Elsewhere snowglobe. Does this mean the entire show is just the dream of an autistic boy?
You heard it here first, folks. Matilda = 6.
Cake twins! And egghead Dash is best Dash.
Never before have I seen the words "welcome wagon" taken so…literally.
I loved the way they played with the stock music. Or rather, threw it out. Hyper upbeat ending theme? Nah, we'll use "Yankee Doodle" instead. Stock letter-writing music? Nope, "Smile, Smile, Smile"!
If I may serious for a moment, this episode's letter was probably my second favorite, right behind AJ's non-lesson from "Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000". It's probably the most open defense of introversion I've seen in any media aimed at people under the age of 18. I know we've seen a lot of that in the interactions of, for example, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, or Pinkie Pie and…well, anypony else, but it's nice to hear the writers actually take an open stand. Yes, kids, it's okay to be a loner.
Definetly one of the best season 2 episodes, and Smile is so taunting, one does not simply listen to it without smiling.. or feeling goosebumps. Best Pinkie episode so far in my personal opinion, and yes, that means I liked it even more than Party of One.
ReplyDeleteThat episode was so freaking awesome, as soon as it ended my non-brony girlfriend said, "we should watch that again."
ReplyDeleteAlso, Pinkie's giggle when she plays with the wind chimes, CUTEST THING EVER! And it's exactly how I sound whenever there's a new episode.
@Equinenox
ReplyDeleteThe last picture above is Pinkie breaking the forth wall: Looking directly at the audience while she holds up a giant felt check mark that exists as a stop-motion animation prop but in-world was meant to symbolize an abstract idea. She may as well be holding up an animation cel (not that those exist any more.)
And of course, this follows the stop-motion segment where she showed self awareness of her songs that come out of "nowhere".
@Ironclad
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you calm down? You seem to be getting more into it than he was.
Rose was named on-screen back in "Bridle Gossip". This was just consistency.
ReplyDeleteLittle known fact! Derpy appears again towards the end of the episode in an overhead shot at a market stand! Doing nothing but standing there! Amazing!
Some one on @MyLittlePony remembered this fan comic http://bit.ly/i9RGSS xD
ReplyDeleteAnd nobody notices that the book rainbow is reading as the cover of the griffon's goblet, but has writeen the sapphite statue on it.
ReplyDelete@equinox
ReplyDeleteim on a mobile device so there is no reply button for me :(
anywho, sorry bout that. You know how tones can't be conveyed well cross the internets! But anywho, I mean you don't gotta tear down seth, we don't need to tear down anyone, we all love the same cartoon, can't we all just get along? (Sorry, that schtick was mostly for people who hate on every episode)
I liked this episode right up to the wig part, and then Pinkie went too far for me. People generally wear wigs because they want to conceal baldness and Pinkie would have known that, yet she intentionally drew everypony's attention to Cranky's lack of hair. How could she ever have believed that could help? Either she's too stupid to live or she's deliberately trying to cause distress, and neither option is how I'd expect her to behave. From that point on I found her behaviour too unrealistic to be fully enjoyable; unrealistic even in the context of a bright pink talking horse with her own personal laws of physics and an ability to see audiences.
ReplyDeleteIn other respects it was a great episode, but I'd have preferred it had Pinkie managed to get the message that she wasn't helping a little earlier. She's not usually that insensitive.
There's the mayor, the accountant (scroll-mark stallion) and the lawyer (mallet-mark mare). Equestria took from our world what is worst about it... Bureaucracy...
ReplyDeleteEggDash/Cake Twins/Roseluck/Dinky and Scoots w/Pinky in 'Smile'....A strong #2 Episode of this Season, hands down.
ReplyDeleteHey, didn't one or more of the FIM art crew also have roles in Johnny Bravo?
ReplyDelete@eri
ReplyDeletewhat are you talking about lol. Im just saying I thought he was being negative (which now I know because he explained himself) but I was just saying in general I hate how eveyone comes on the internet to complain and bitch about every little thing in almost anything when they would never say half the crap they type in real life. Im just saying everyone hatin' just chill (im not mad at you either, just letting everyone know its cool to just chill)
Favourite Pinkie song so far! The inclusion of all the background ponies was also nice to see.
ReplyDeleteMy explanations for events in the episode:
ReplyDeleteDerpy in the snowglobe: Pinkie's imagination
PARTICLE EXPLOSION: Pinkie's imagination
PINKIE ROCKET: Pinkie's physical ability
SHADOW CLONE JUTSU: Pinkie's imagination
BEAVER TRANSFORMATION: Rapid teleportation magic (to retrieve the beaver costume), possibly involving one of the Elements.
Felt check in reality: Pinkie's imagination.
GRAVITY REVERSAL: Magic.
EYES OF ZOMM (AND the part with her left eye through the lock), as well as 6/8-legged Pinkie: Pinkie might just be a mutant pony with freakishly-structured eyes and possibly self-restricted structural manipulation, but doesn't know that entirely and won't expose the fact to her friends.
All in All, a lot of Pinkie's antics in the episode either suggest a shocking revelation about Pinkie in the future, or are her imagination being projected into a third-person perspective not extant in-universe. About Pinkie's 4th wall-breaking, Lauren herself suggests that Pinkie's just being a goofball, and nothing more.
"Look, Rose! How awful!"
ReplyDelete"The wicked enchantress has cursed them all!"
"The horror! The horror!"
Am I the only one who thought that his new wig looked like Steven Magnet's hair?
ReplyDelete"Always full of surprises"?
ReplyDeleteUm hello, she IS Surprise. Sort of.
Conituity? In my MLP FiM? That doesn't have to do with the season finale? What manner of madness is this?
Rose is not yet to be confirmed to be her full name or nickname, we may never know.
Pinkie officially breaks the 4th wall harder than Deadpool ever could, but this is mostly because Deadpool cannot hold objects that exist beyond the 4th like that felt check-mark due to limitations within comics.
And Deadpool weaponizes health bars and power gauges, and pinkie STILL managed to top that.
I'm still holding out on Deadpool showing up in an episodic cartoon. Real disappointment he never showed up in "SHS Show" but did show up in "SHS Online"
This episode made me hate Pinkie Pie even more than I already do.
ReplyDeleteShe's too over the top, obnoxious for me.
And I felt awful for Cranky ;w;
Cranky's blonde wig makes me think of Steven Magnet.
Tell me I'm not the only one who saw this ._.
That OC Pony the sunbathing pony looks like is Palette, at least in color. She is one of Birdco's gaggle of OC's
ReplyDeleteAlso googling Eyes of Zomm is not that hard to do.
ReplyDeleteoh my, oh my, oh my! Three goverment ponies!
ReplyDeleteRepresenting three goverment branches: Judical (malet), Executive (major) and Legislative (scroll)! ! ! They desperately in need of 4th the newspaper pony!
@Equinenox
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Physics breaking is not the same as 4th wall breaking.
It's like "alicorns". It's hard to point it out without just seeming mean, but I'm glad someone said it.
(Don't know if anypony has brought it up in earlier comments beacuse I skipped the last half)
ReplyDeleteSeth, honestly... That's Apple Cobbler, AJ's cousin! She's been in the background several times during season 1 xD
This episode was just full of win. Fortunately we now have a post that chronicles the full degree of winning that was contained within this episode.
ReplyDeleteI loved the episode. Pinkie Pie was, is, and forever will be best pony.
ReplyDeleteBest episode is best episode is best episode. I'm still too happy about it to deconstruct it.
ReplyDeleteHearts and Hooves was incredible too, it's been a great couple of weeks for poni.
Loved the episode.
ReplyDeleteThe continuity in it was quite nice. I mean, Rainbow Dash choosing to read with Twilight AND actually enjoying it... I never thought I would see the day.
And "Smile, Smile, Smile" is more than welcome to be my newest addition to the pony-related tunes on my I-pod.
If her name is Matilda, does that mean she was waltzing?
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite ready to say this was my favorite episode, but it's definitely up there. I've always liked Pinkie Pie, but that awesome song, (definitely my favorite song so far,) really helped cement her character and motivations. I love that she lives in such a selfless way, and dedicates her whole life just to making others happy. I may be a bit of a loner myself, but I'd love to have her as a friend because she's just so uplifting. The world needs more people/ponies like her.
ReplyDelete@Sothalic
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about this being season 2's Winter Wrap Up, both are really popular episodes I just couldn't get into (which almost never happens). I guess episodes with "not much story, but an overload of pure joy and happiness to make up for it" just don't appeal to me. I wonder what that says about me...
This is up there with Party Of One as my favorite Pinkie ep, the Smile song and her interactions with Cranky were priceless.
ReplyDeletereally johnny bravo? i'd say his wig looks more like steven magnets'
ReplyDeletePersonally I didn't care much for the song, but the episode was good as always.
ReplyDeleteFunny that when I first saw Cranky, I thought his hair looked really odd. After seeing that it was a toupee, it all made sense.
Pinkie was certainly crazy in this episode. Completely understandable that Cranky didn't want to be her friend considering she kept shoving her nose into his business and messing with his stuff. Reminds me of when she was chasing down Rainbow Dash in season one.
And yes, I love the fact that RD was found in the library reading in this episode. Hooray for continuity in character development.
The felt sequence was an unexpected treat. We've now seen Pinkie logic.
Best. Episode. Ever.
ReplyDeleteWait a minute...
ReplyDeleteCould it be?
Pinkie Pie NEEDS smiles because they power her
reality warping and 4th wall breaking?
This is by far one of the best episodes. Loved it xD
ReplyDeleteWow, Seth. So much fail in this post.
ReplyDeleteCUTIE MARK CRUSADER PROBLEM LISTERS! YEAH!
1) Rose was already named in "Bridle Gossip." She was referred to by name by Daisy. Daisy was later referred to by name by Twilight, so Lily is the only one of the three that we need confirmation on. The toy did call her Roseluck, but the show does take precedence over the toys, so it doesn't count.
2) Cows were already established as being sentient in "Applebuck Season." Remember the stampede Applejack stopped, and she then had a conversation with one of the cows.
3) The background pony you refer to is Apple Cobbler. Look it up. She appeared in "Mare in the Moon (Friendship is Magic, part 1)," "A Bird in the Hoof," "The Last Roundup," "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000," and "Hearts and Hooves Day." Not a new character by any means.
4) Derpy being in a snowglobe should not have been surprising at all. We've seen her in very strange locations before, such as the chicken hut in "May the Best Pet Win!" and the well in "Secret of My Excess."
5) Mr. Waddle was not from "Hearts and Hooves Day." Although he appeared in that episode, his initial appearance and his most prominent role was in "The Mysterious Mare Do Well." Before that, he also appeared in the theme song of Season 2 (beginning with the episode "Lesson Zero").
6) Pinkie Pie's fourth wall antics and immunity to the laws of physics were established in pretty much every episode. Although being able to chase down the fastest beings on the planet occurred in "Griffon the Brush-Off" and "Party of One," so chasing down Cranky Doodle Donkey was to be expected.
7) This was not Daring-Do's first call back since "Read It And Weep." In fact, "Read it and Weep" was itself a call back to the character. Daring-Do's initial appearance was in "Luna Eclipsed," when Berry Punch wore a costume of her.
8) Cranky Doodle Donkey's hair was NOT a reference to Johnny Bravo's. If anything, it's closer to Stephen Magnet (the ambiguously gay sea serpent from "Elements of Harmony (Friendship is Magic, part 2)." It's closer in both color and shape.
Dear Sethisto, please, do your research before you make blog posts.
Well Pinkie was always my second favorite pony and this episode shows why. Twilight's episode better be good or she might be in danger of slipping to thid curly pink whirlwind of a pony.
ReplyDeleteRandom thoughts:
ReplyDelete--"Smile": Musical numbers of that caliber simply don't happen in Western (television) animation.
--CDD's rebuffing of Pinkie's repeated attempts to cheer him up generates a response akin to Yakko Warner declaring "Oooh, I think we've found this week's Special Friend!"
--Felt animation: Pinkie thinks in fuzzy logic?
---PCJ
It's not a confirmation, she was called "Rose" in Bridle Gossip. Not to mention, her voice sounded different. There it sounded more like Fluttershy's, here it sounded more like Cheerilee's or Mrs. Cake's. I... like the previous voice better. :/
ReplyDeleteWas NOPONY disturbed that the cow wanted to drink milk? Who's milk is she supposed to drink? ...Her own?! O_O
I'd love to knwo who those other politician ponies are, and if they help the mayor in any way.
I have to admit, I like that pony with the glasses in the shade... Those glasses make her look SO sophisticated...
The felt thing was ultra cute, I loved that part!
I also love the two continuity nods, especially babies Pound and Pumpkin! :3
Rainbow Dash reading was cool, too.
I always thought that new wig was kind of weird...
And the Smile song, what can I say, one of the best songs the series ever made. Awesome episode, one of season 2's best, great stuff!
To Ironclad, this is not argumentative. It is more of a conversation about animation. We're chill.
ReplyDelete@Harwick
I disagree. She's holding up a prop from her mind. That's just more of her antics. It's just an animation prop with a different art style. She just uses her weird magic to pull said prop from her mind. It's as 4th wall breaking as if Lyra had a baseball mitt in canon. Let me bring up Daffy Duck again (not that this is a real example).
Say Daffy Duck is thinking hard, and the camera zooms in on his noggin. It shows a bunch of little Daffys working hard at computers in his head. Daffy reaches into his ear with a cotton swab, and pulls one out, and freaks out at what he has found. This isn't 4th wall breaking. Also using another art style isn't breaking the 4th wall either (e.g. The episode of Spongebob where Mr Krabs loses his millionth dollar on a fishing boat; there is stock footage of an orchestra playing scary music).
Consider a real (and much more relevant to your post) example. Here's the South Park episode: A Very Crappy Christmas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Very_Crappy_Christmas
Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman create a paper cutout cartoon of themselves resembling the Pilot episode. In universe, it's just a cartoon. Out of universe, we know the underlying joke. No 4th wall breakage here.
Now go watch Cancelled:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancelled_%28South_Park%29
The boys actually say "Didn't we do this episode before?" THAT is 4th wall breakage. It's just done so cleverly that it is actually the plot of the episode because the TV show "Earth" is starting to get repetitive. For that reason, this episode can still be defended as not breaking the 4th wall.
Now back to MLP. Regarding Pinkie Pie looking at the audience. She is clearly looking straight forward in more of an "I'm ready" pose after looking up from her notepad. Not at the audience.
I'm enjoying this conversation, so please, continue.
That last pic...
ReplyDeleteMust photoshop a gun into her hands...
I would assume that the other two politician ponies were the local judge and congress/city council/whatever pony. I mean, it's not like Equstria's cities have to be ruled by GoddessPrincesses too. That would be maddening.
ReplyDeleteRoseluck <3
ReplyDeleteAlso, a note: There was also a callback in the form of Pinkie replacing the Celestia statue, referencing Luna doing the same to Nightmare Moon i do believe.
ReplyDeleteThe pony with the gavel CM should be called Judge Rein-hold.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
I think the OC pony you're thinking of is Veggie55's Hipster Scootaloo. At least, that's what the glasses remind me of. Also, Pinkie Pie is confirmed as Sleipnir, steed of the almighty Odin.
ReplyDeleteDerpy Hooves was in the snowglobe... BEST EVER.
ReplyDeleteI want that snowglobe now. Just watch me edit a snowglobe and put a mini Derpy in it...
I was REALLY REALLY REEEEEALLY hoping that I would see Derpy earlier in the episode though. It woulda bee really awesome if Pinkie said hi to Derpy and Derpy said hi back. At least that would be one more talking scene, even if it was only one word...
I want more Derpy. D: I don't mind her being a side character, in fact I think it's meant to be that way and I like it, but I wish she had more lines here and there. (And maybe a detication episode would be cool. :D "Don't judge someone just because they don't think the way you do" maybe? "Don't judge a book by it's cover" perhaps?)
Anyway, nice episode. That Smile song was one of the best in the whole season!
@Yellow 13
ReplyDeleteAn hour or so after posting this and I was able to pick up a Roseluck blindbag, along with Flower Wishes (Daisy). Score, been searching for them.
@GoldenSandslash15
ReplyDeleteyour comment rocks
Facebook.
ReplyDeleteHa. Ha, ha, ha... HAHAHAHA!!!
I got that now XD
@MaF
ReplyDeleteThank you, I am quite fond of it.
@equinox
ReplyDeletegood to know we are cool (brohoof)
At the risk of pigeonholing myself as always seeking a dark subtext, did anypony else find the Smile! song just a touch bittersweet or eerie?
ReplyDeleteI mean, it sort of suggests that Pinkie really has no concept of making herself happy outside of making others happy - like she invests herself completely and utterly in their smiles.
It's a charming sentiment, and she certainly spreads joy hither and yon, but...
...What is she like when she's alone?
Sorry I messed up your name equinenox! :(
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie always was and always will be the best pony
ReplyDeleteFound the episode to be rather enjoyable with everything culminating together in an expected, but great ending.
ReplyDeleteWould say the "Smile" song to be very surprising even though I heard a bit of it on youtube. The animation combined with the music made it feel as though I was hearing it for the first time again. Definitely have to give kudos to the animation team on this episode.
@Batty Gloom Or "CrankyDoodleDonkey" or "C.D.D" LOL
ReplyDeleteThis episode fucked my perception of how the world works foe pinkie to no end.
ReplyDeleteI still insist that is Mayor Mare family. Her husband and daughter they seem. I´ll love to see them again. The idea that she is a middle-age workwife with somewhat spunky teenage daughter is gold material for me.
ReplyDeleteThat new wig for Cranky was the same hair style for that gay serpent in the second episode...
ReplyDeleteBy far my favorite episode yet. I still think that Rarity and Twi are tied as Best Pony, but Pinkie keeps trying to get up there... I think she's succeeding...
ReplyDeleteThis episode is what us Pinkie fans have been waiting for all season: one with her in her natural element. She was getting to feel pretty peripheral and even considered a hinderence by some ponies, but here's a reminder of why she's my #1!
ReplyDelete"Cereal said he actually--
ReplyDeleteoh, clApped....
Hooray! I waited forever it seems for this! Reading Dash is best Dash. I like how the book is the Griphons Goblet but it still says Sapphire Stone....lol
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie may not be understood sometimes but she there to make her friends smile. That takes alot of insane courage.
ReplyDeleteWell you can say pinkie is more powerful that twilight after see what she can do so far
ReplyDeleteThe scene where Cranky loses his toupee may have been a reference to my favorite 3 Stooges Episode, Disorder in the Court. In that one, they perform a musical number, and during the song, Larry's violin bow snags a guy's toupee. Moe sees it laying on the floor and yells tarantula!, and they then proceed to destroy it.
ReplyDeleteWhen Pinkie yelled Spider! and stomped on it, reminded me very much of the 3 Stooges episode.
I was a bit mixed about the way Pinkie chose to break the 4th wall this time around with the felt. while a nice animation, talking directly to the audience the way she did gave it a Dora feel... i found myself wanting to fast forward through that part. Other than that, great episode. The song in the beginning was terrific, i smiled all the way through it.
ReplyDeleteEverything already said in this post and the comments.
ReplyDeleteI think that Smile Smile Smile should defiantly be considered for an Award. I know it is on youtube but does anyone know where a high quality MP3 for it can be found?
@SomeGuy
ReplyDeletewww.youtube.com/watch?v=pFIs74TmfI4
Link for it in the description.
My favorite song now, so far. Perhaps not my favorite episode, I've yet to make a judgement on the entirety of the show just yet. However, from what I've seen on my dvr setup, there won't be a new episode next week. *sadface* Looks like a week break before we get to Fluttershy learning how to be a badflank.
ReplyDelete@Saddlesoap
ReplyDeleteI'm actually like this in real life. And being alone bothers me greatly, I need to at least have some human contact, even something as small as twitter or forums, or I start to have a breakdown.
Is it just me, or does cranky's replacement toupee look like Steven magnet's hair?
ReplyDelete@Smashmatt202
ReplyDeleteThe cow drinking milk caught me off guard as well...
