Another alternate ending to MDW? Errrg... ill check it with an open mind, but seriously, RD deserved to have friendship beaten into her that episode, with a large bat.
This is how MDW should have ended in my opinion, or something close to that. Didn't really like how easily she shrugged off the fact that her friends had just been even larger jerks to her than she was, even if she was a bit to blame herself for blowing it completely out of proportions.
Guess that's just both groups being insensitive though.
This comic has a good idea. I feel like it could have been executed better, and it took way more pages than it should have. Some of those faces in the comic look terrible.
I actually liked MDW. sure I thought some parts were awful but I didn't think the ending was THAT bad.
I think a lot of people are just overreacting on how bad it is, like some sort of echo chamber effect going on.
I mean, it's not like they humiliated her in front of the town on stage, they lured her into a back alley first and then revealed it so that it would just be her little secret.
my only real problem with the episode at all was how they didn't try to talk to her about it first.
the only remotely actually GOOD part of the episode was the ending, the lesson.
the rest was Dash being a hamfisted braggart that was physically assaulting to the viewer and the mane six showing up Dash, then rubbing it in her face and making themselves into hypocritical asshats.
The writer of the episode can go burn for all i care.
Awesome comic, even if it was on the lengthy side. It definitely has a more powerful ending than the episode, but I think it's a little too much to have been there. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this comic. The storyline and art were really good. Definitely episode worthy. But considering the audience, I think it's just a tad too powerful to have been the episode ending.
Why does Rainbow keep getting the depressing crap :/ Not saying it's bad, it's just odd that RD is the only one who seems to get these types of stories.
Wishing ill will on someone for something as petty as not liking an episode of a cartoon show isn't very becoming. I didn't care for the plot that much either but it's not hard to get over.
As for the comic: Felt a bit to sappy and run-on. It's not bad, so much as it was unnecessarily long-winded with it's theme. But that's just me. I find the best comics can tell a story with as few words as possible.
I was very sore over it. After being disappointed by Best Pet, too much coolness going on there and a hamfisted lesson, I was looking for a good episode, instead i get the worst episode of anything I've ever seen.
Gyeesh. The show vectors really highlight how off the art is, and the writing is just awful. The idea was okay, but I felt like I was reading something from Metal Gear Solid, horrible translations and all.

I didn't think the episode was all that bad, honestly. Yes, it was predictable, and the lesson was kinda phoned in, but you don't really need to roast the poor girl who devoted her time to create it.
Anyways, i thought this comic was well done. Very anime style art, and touching story. Sad? Yup. :) But good.
Merriweather helped write one of my favorite Spongebob episodes, Band Geeks. So she's not a "New" writer. just new to this show.
I just couldn't tell what she was getting at most of the episode. The entire bragging thing was drug into the ground the entire episode, which got really really annoying. Could've been handled way better, or in a less annoying manner.

Could be much worse, of course, but this reads like every cliche manga ever, lumped together, with ponies.
Be that as it may. It's just disconcerting to me to see such vitriol over it. Clearly you've a great deal of emotion vested in the characterizations. Which isn't a bad thing, but wishing someone to burn over perceived mis-portrayal of Dash is a bit extreme.
Besides, I think Read it and Weep has served as a good bit of catharsis for Dash.
I just don't react well to anything canon that portrays my favorite pony in a bad light, cause the last thing we need is more Dash haters. Especially seeing how a lot of the other mane six seem to get handled far better, exception being Rarity.
I had a similar reaction to Best Pet, but at least that had her discovering the lesson on her own.
Read It And Weep is an example of how to handle Dash right.
Ehh, it was cute, but I couldn't really get past the horrible art. Very interesting, though, I never thought of Rainbow being inadvertently hurt by the whole Mare-Do-Well incident, but I suppose it's a definite possibility.
certainly is a better example of how to handle Dash.
It had her being against it, her discovering it on her own, and being against stopping/showing.
MDW could've played out similarly. Victory Crowd could've shown annoyance with the bragging, and Dash takes a step back, and cuts a little, but still shows off.
Ugh, are people still sore at RD getting a deserving kick up the rump in that episode? Seriously, I was so glad she got taken down a peg by her friends. But saying she was humiliated is taking too far; none of the public reacted as if she was humiliated. She was just overshadowed. It's her massively annoying ego that can't take that.
Could have been, yeah. The crowd turning against her and humbling her would have been more interesting to me. Then something happens, a humble Dash saves the day and isn't so self-aggrandizing over it. Then comes the revelation from her friends, moral learned, letter written, etc. End episode.
I liked that actually, the drawing and color was pretty great
Side Note: People it was just a fucking version of Boast Busters! Rainbow went overboard, friends thought it would prove her wrong. It did, yes there can be two sides to something like that BUT THEY GAVE YOU THE DAMND GOOD ONE!
@wackypony While I admit that the Mare Do-well episode wasn't my favorite, I think your being a little harsh. Dash was always to me a bit of a show-off. I liked this episode because it made Rainbow see that she didn't need to be the best at everything, that others can win from time to time. The best part is that her friends did it for her own good, so that she could ask them for help. And even after all that I still love Rainbow Dash, none of these made me hate her.
i would've ditched the entire MDW concept and just went with crowd reaction to the point where the crowd walks off from her bragging, then Dash asks her friends what is wrong/why'd they leave, they tell her that she's bragging too much and she should try bragging less.
Then Dash saves the day again, and sorta just takes it without so much showboating, rinse and repeat except this time she just takes it in stride. At the end of the episode, she writes to Celestia about how she almost ruined what she had by showboating.
I liked it. Was surprised (but not disappointed) to see flat maned Pinkie after Dashie came to.
I'm tired of Mare-Do-Well flamefests. It was an episode that had its merits and its flaws. Not everyone likes it, and that's fine. Let's just let the drama be.
The main problem I had with the episode was that it was the second 'Regression' episode in a row featuring Rainbow Dash. It presented a lesson that was already demonstrated in 'Boast Busters' ('Don't boast, be humble to others'), whereas 'May the Best Pet Win' did the same with 'Griffon the Brush-Off' ('There's more to someone than 'Being Cool and Stuff'') by presenting RD an an antagonist of sorts.
Im sure the episode would had been taken more lightly if it was shown after 'Read it and Weep', which was a great redemption episode for her after that massive one-two punch that totally obliterated the little I liked her for in my opinion.
Anyways, I believe this conversation already took place many times, all was said and done, really... you guys need to stop this vendetta against MDW.
Believe me, while I wouldn't mind the vendetta/drama against that episode dying, it's very unlikely to happen, in my opinion. It's a Base Breaker episode, unfortunately; and ripe Flame Bait.
I personally didn't care for it for a few reasons, but that's just my opinion. Nothing more, and nothing less.
I really don't know how to feel about this series of comics. I definitely think they're not true to the show itself. But that's common with fan comics and such. I don't like how it appears to be trying to make all the others out to be like total jerks for trying to teach Dash a lesson in the Mare Do Well episode. Dash is indeed a little bit of a jerk and too boastful for her own good sometimes. That's why she moved so far down on my list since the early days of Season One. I think the others were in the right when they did what they did to try and get her to be a bit more humble. So yeah. Can't say I agree with the comics portrayals of the characters myself. How it seems to try and heighten Dash while belittling the others. But it's a kinda cute comic still.
Rainbow Dash is still the best in my opinion even though it may count for nothing but I do agree this conversation happend many a time already just be happy with the show, otherwise just shut up
Oh this is bollocks. Rainbow is an emo and should cut herself. She deserved the lesson, as well as fair punch in her face (which she didnt get, sadly).
I'm gonna ignore the MDW discussion (as I've said my piece on it already, and my opinions don't differ that much from wackypony's anyway).
The comic was alright. It did a good job portraying everyone's character, and Dash was really good in it, but I think "Less is More" would have applied here. The story could have been told in at least two fewer pages, and some of the art resulting from that padding looked pretty bad.
Alright first time posting. If someone's reads my comment then they do. I've been in the fandom for about a year. I've read most of the major fanfics from Pony Psychology to Bittersweet to Sweet Apple Massacre. I've seen possibly over 100 comic pages and an innumerable amount of pictures.
But this. This left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I thought the episode was okay. Not up to the show's usual quality but it was fine.
The author's favorite pony is quite obviously RD, as this story treats her as the only good pony. In this story, she apparently did nothing to merit Mare-do-well. She's just turned into a Mary Sue that the other ponies have to cater to. She basically says "Oh I couldn't let you die, just don't pull something like that again, because I'm the most important pony" I understand it's his/her first work, but they need to learn to convey personality without making ponies sound like douches.
@Octavia They were jerks, though. Let's face it, there was no attempt at talking her down beforehand, they just jumped straight into completely humiliating their friend, then acting like hypocrites by boasting about their own exploits as Mare-Do-Well.
The lesson was needed, but the episode was horribly written, and I really don't think the other five were the paragons of virtue in that episode that some people seem to think they are; they sank to the same level as Dash to teach her a lesson, then just expected her to forgive them for leaving her reputation in tatters. If you ask me, the MDW episode was more out-of-character than this comic, in some regards.
I loved the story, but I wasn't big on the art style. I love anime style, but it didn't seem to work too well here; in some of the panels the ponies looked like pigs. But aside from that I thought the story was great.
Although the drawing was too many times...kinda bad, I liked this. RD crying was too much, but she could have been more angry at her friends for what they did. As she says in page 11, they must try to tell her things first, no showing her how better they are AND being incredibly hypocritical.
I fairly enjoyed the art style of the comic, but that was about it for me. Rainbow Dash overreacting to such a foolish thing was acceptable, but having all of them just beg for forgiveness and all admitting that they were wrong in some way just knocked me out of any attempt at enjoying the storyline. It didn't help that RD was still portrayed as being correct in that situation.
They did try and talk to her a little beforehand. But as typical for Dash, she doesn't listen. She's bullheaded and stubborn. It's part of her character. To really get Dash to take notice about something, you often have to take your efforts up a notch. And they weren't boasting about their own exploits as Mare Do Well. At least not in a serious manner. I still hold true to my belief that they were in the right to teach her the lesson in the way they did. As for how the episode was written, it's not one of my favorites honestly.
@Melon HunterHow exactly did they boast? Was it when they didn't talk at all to the people they saved? Perhaps it was where they constantly tried to hide behind a mask so they didn't get credit? Or are you instead referring to when they explained how they accomplished said feats?
They didn't boast about how awesome they were, and they most certainly didn't get Spike to follow them around to create a biography.
Where the gang were driving home the point that she's modest and humble yet also skilled? Sure it was a little bit mean, but to claim that such 3rd person boasting is the same as what RD did is a rather large stretch.
As far as comics go, I've read better. I didn't really like the art style and the plot seemed a bit all over the place. I was expecting some wangst and self-loathing but got a random fight scene followed by victimization of Rainbow Dash instead.
And as for the Mysterious Mare Do Well.. I still hate the episode and believe every single character was a completely unsympathetic douche in it. These constant debates whenever the episode is brought up are getting a bit tiresome and repetitive, though.
@Octavia Well, different strokes for different folks. Again, I agree with you on the content of the lesson, but it was a very ham-fisted delivery. The comments section of the episode discussion had some very interesting (and in my opinion, superior) alternative deliveries bandied about, chiefly addressing the fact that had the townsfolk gotten annoyed with Dash's antics before MDW showed up, that would have run a lot smoother, and also given much more justification for the path the Mane 5 took.
@Xian217 They were boasting about MDW's exploits right in front of Dash at Sugarcube Corner, to deliberately get a rise out of her. That stung. That was really low of them, and that convinced me that this lesson was not well taught at all. The Mane 5 manipulated Dash and pushed her further and further to try and outdo Mare Do Well, and of course every time she failed and just fell further. Apparently it was acceptable collateral damage to leave Dash's self-esteem and reputation in tatters in exchange for teaching her a lesson.
And as for Dash's boasting? Part of her character. Twilight, Applejack, even Fluttershy boasting about their exploits as MDW? Completely out of character. The lesson felt less like humility and more like 'So you think you're so good? Well, then you'll get ground into the dirt by a pony who's better than you'll ever be.'
but seriously, y'all should just CALM THE BUCK DOWN. It's ONE BUCKING EPISODE everypony. How about we all love and tolerate each other's opinions and just enjoy the comic as it is?
Perhaps it was less about humility. I took the lesson as a small amount of humility and a large portion of "my friends are going to try and look out for me". It was never one of my favorite episodes, but it wasn't this huge catastrophe of mish mashed character development.
I will admit that it skewed off a bit far from how they normally act, but RD being boastful like that was also a bit out of character in my mind. Especially since she was against Trixie boasting.
I don't care if its not what the episode was about, and it could very well be independent from everything canon/fanon ever. I will still respect and appreciate this comic with all of my being. Beautiful style, great story line, and amazing ending. I congratulate the author on such an amazing piece of art.
It's sweet, but somehow too much like a manga, not that I'm against manga (I read several) but it doesn't mix with MLP like this I guess. A little bit cheesy xD But I still enjoyed and liked it and saved every page in my mlp comic folder :D
@Xian217 Yes! That's pretty much what I thought as well. I think we can only chalk it up to a new writer amplifying some character attributes a bit too far.
It's a bit of a shame how a few little changes would have made it a whole lot better: if in that scene in Sugarcube Corner, Twilight had said something like "Mare Do Well's gained a lot of popularity, yet she never stands around and boasts. Maybe you should try that, instead of just showing off when ponies are in danger?" and Dash had ignored that, then it would be abundantly clear that Dash could only be taught this lesson by being taken out back and beaten repeatedly with a large stick labelled 'Knowledge' (metaphorically speaking, at least). As it stands, it looks like the Mane 5 are just as caught moment, and they justify it with "We're teaching her a lesson!"
Personally, I don't know what to think about Mare Do Well. On the one hoof, Dash (in my opinion) very much needed to be taken down a peg; she had racked up many, many examples of jerkassitude that had gone pretty much totally unpunished until Find A Pet/Mare Do Well. It irked me that she got so much hype and attention when she was easily the least likable or well-developed of the characters.
In Mare Do Well, she finally gets taken down a peg and gains some good character development, which makes me and those who share my views on the subject able to like and accept when episodes like 'Read It And Weep' come around, where she becomes a Butt Monkey to pay back for her previous attitude, and she gains/develops positive character traits and epiphanies. In the first season, she was less of a Butt Monkey and more 'Oh my god I'm so awesome, you wimps and intellectuals can all suck it.'
Find A Pet focused more on her learning not to be a jerk to everyone around her and not to toss others aside for not being useful. Mare Do Well focused more on finally getting it into her head that she's not as OMFGTOTALLYAWESOME as she thinks she is, and is therefore much more satisfying for those of us watching who were getting a little tired of her being OMFGTOTALLYAWESOME and getting off scot-free for the way she treats everypony.
Also, people tend to forget that not only was she showboating, she was doing a -bad job it.- She was putting lives in danger for her pride, and the other Mane characters probably decided to dress up as Mare Do Well partly because they knew that if any of them stepped in and did it themselves, Dash would have probably gotten angry at them instead.
I do agree that it was pretty stupid that they didn't even bother to talk to her before pulling it off, but they didn't humiliate her in public under any circumstances where not doing so would have caused an enormous amount of damage, and possibly had casualties.
I must say, whatever you think about the episode, wishing harm on the writer strikes me as a rather petty thing to do. If she had done something like, say, have Dash do something actually out of character and -then- punished her for it, that would be a bit more grounds, but even then it's still not much of an excuse. I'm not averse to people having opinions, but there comes a point when people stop using opinions and start using shouting posts at every opportunity given. :/
As for the comic, the characters are disturbingly off-model, the coloring isn't that great in any but a few panels, it's repetitious, it could easily have gotten its point across with about a third of the length, the translation slips in a few places, and while I don't terribly mind manga art-style, this comic takes many of the most annoying quirks and gimmicks of the style and reuses them over and over (I might die happy if I never see another ellipsis in my life).
However, the artist obviously put a great deal of time, heart, and effort into this, and for that I applaud them heartily. My advice is to study the character models some more, greatly lessen the use of ellipses, and take to heart the saying 'brevity is the soul of wit' (the last of which I am, as you can see, still learning). Once that's done, I imagine this drawfriend will make some amazing stuff!
@Xian217 > Especially since she was against Trixie boasting.
It should be noted that RD was against Trixie's showing off, because, as she stated, that was her job. Boasting is one of the central (and IMHO deeply unsympathetic) parts of RD's character. She will occasionally act with grace and humility (as in the rescue in The Secret of my Excess), but that is the exception, not the rule.
Mare Do Well was basically a decent aesop (that was more or less a redux of Boast Busters, but whatever), told in a way that...left something to be desired, at best. At worst, it completely and utterly botched it.
That said, while it's still my one of my least favorite episodes, I've come to just accept is as being the result of a new writer not really having gotten a feel for the show. Especially since Hearths Warming Eve turned out so well as Merriweather's sophomore effort, that's completely okay.
No, I'd say that "Read it and Weep" was the greatest way to redeem Dash after "Pet" and "Mare-do-Well" by leaving it later as it was presented.
I swear, a lot of Dash fans don't do her justice by ignoring that she deserves some criticism or that she's super sensitive like the comic presented.
Dash is made of sturdy stuff and is reasonably proud of herself because well, she's shown she's capable of awesome! But taking her boasting to Trixie-like levels is just irritating.
I'm with TheBlackBaron and Carnivorous M. here: MDW had a decent aesop that Dash really needed to learn, but it could've been handled better.
That said? This comic had potential, but I feel it falls squarely into "My Favourite Character Can Do No Wrong".
No mention is made of RD letting her ego get the better of her, or why the other Mane Six did the MDW-thing in the first place. Oh no, they're just meanies for not somehow seeing that Dash just didn't want to be alone! Despite nothing in either the episode or the rest of the canon indicating that, or RD ever telling them about it.
Which brings me to my next point: RD feels majorly OOC to me. Part of what makes her awesome is her flaws, but those were removed here so she could be the Perfect Character Who Can Do No Wrong. I can accept her crying in the cave, because no one can see her there. But that much crying? Assuming her friends intentionally meant to hurt her? That, despite everything they've gone through together and everything she's done, no one will ever want to be friends with her again?
...who is this, and what has she done with Rainbow "Sonic Rainboom" Dash?
Oh, and let's not forget tired clichés like "almost gets herself killed for those jerks because she's so ~*selfless*~" and "they realize how ~*mean*~ they were to her and beg for her forgiveness".
The ending made me outright uncomfortable, because the aesop comes of as "no matter what horrible things you friends do to you, you must always forgive them or you'll be alone".
TL;DR version: Comic had potential, instead it used clichés and botched Rainbow Dash's characterization.

ReplyDeleteI figured it be somepony else.
A good comic that plays on Rainbow's pride. I was actually worried that the story was going to end on a sad note, but the ending made it even better.
ReplyDeleteFriendship will last forever, as well as these ponies!!!! :,)

ReplyDeletestuff like this shows off why Mare Do Well was a nuclear disaster of an episode.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading this sorry i really want some RL friends (never ever able to make one in my hole live)
ReplyDeleteWhy does Rainbow keep getting the depressing crap :/ Not saying it's bad, it's just odd that RD is the only one who seems to get these types of stories.
ReplyDeletealso, this comic shows the route i think Dash took.
ReplyDeletethe one where "They're still my friends and i'll stick by them." instead of a selfish route of self-pouting.

Beautiful. Manly Tears.
ReplyDelete@Municipal Engines
ReplyDeleteI agree she deserved it.
Doesn't stop the episode from being a ham-handed piece of shit.
I don't think my heart can take that much
ReplyDeleteBut if this turns into a ship I'm throwing a fit
Sorry I can't take sad Dash comics.
ReplyDelete@wackypony
ReplyDeleteCould have been, yeah. The crowd turning against her and humbling her would have been more interesting to me. Then something happens, a humble Dash saves the day and isn't so self-aggrandizing over it. Then comes the revelation from her friends, moral learned, letter written, etc. End episode.
That's how I would have done it at least.
90% of all Dash comics are sad and depressing. This is no good. I liked this anyway but why does Dash always get hurt??
ReplyDeleteI liked that actually, the drawing and color was pretty great
ReplyDeleteSide Note:
People it was just a fucking version of Boast Busters!
Rainbow went overboard, friends thought it would prove her wrong. It did, yes there can be two sides to something like that BUT THEY GAVE YOU THE DAMND GOOD ONE!
@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteI know.
For a moment, when I read this, I felt something.
@wackypony
ReplyDeleteWhile I admit that the Mare Do-well episode wasn't my favorite, I think your being a little harsh.
@Jimperator
ReplyDeletei would've ditched the entire MDW concept and just went with crowd reaction to the point where the crowd walks off from her bragging, then Dash asks her friends what is wrong/why'd they leave, they tell her that she's bragging too much and she should try bragging less.
ReplyDeleteI'm tired of Mare-Do-Well flamefests. It was an episode that had its merits and its flaws. Not everyone likes it, and that's fine. Let's just let the drama be.
@ShakeNDake
ReplyDeleteThe main problem I had with the episode was that it was the second 'Regression' episode in a row featuring Rainbow Dash.
Really deep comic, inspired by an episode that...wasn't so much.
ReplyDeleteThis comic is pretty well done
ReplyDeleteim surprised at the context and plot
GJ
@Sothalic
ReplyDelete"massive one-two punch that totally obliterated the little I liked her for in my opinion."
stuff like this is the chief reason i dislike MDW.
@TechnoTrot and Sothalic...
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, while I wouldn't mind the vendetta/drama against that episode dying, it's very unlikely to happen, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash is still the best in my opinion even though it may count for nothing but I do agree this conversation happend many a time already just be happy with the show, otherwise just shut up
ReplyDeleteOh this is bollocks. Rainbow is an emo and should cut herself. She deserved the lesson, as well as fair punch in her face (which she didnt get, sadly).
ReplyDeleteYea, I reeeally dont like RD :/
I'm gonna ignore the MDW discussion (as I've said my piece on it already, and my opinions don't differ that much from wackypony's anyway).
ReplyDeleteThe comic was alright. It did a good job portraying everyone's character, and Dash was really good in it, but I think "Less is More" would have applied here. The story could have been told in at least two fewer pages, and some of the art resulting from that padding looked pretty bad.
@MeinLittleGott
ReplyDeleteHarsh.
@Bolan
ReplyDelete>Why does Dash have all the sad comics
Fandom: Because we have to make them about her.
>Why? She didn't do anything wrong.
Fandom: We'll make sad comics because she can take it. Because she's not our hero. She's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. The best pony.
ReplyDeleteBut this.
She basically says "Oh I couldn't let you die, just don't pull something like that again, because I'm the most important pony" I understand it's his/her first work, but they need to learn to convey personality without making ponies sound like douches.
... I liked the art though. May not be show-accurate but I like the anime-like style.
ReplyDelete@Octavia
ReplyDeleteThey were jerks, though.
ReplyDeleteStill not sure what i think about the episode, the moral seemed a little... off.
ReplyDeleteHowever I did enjoy the comic very much.
Although the drawing was too many times...kinda bad, I liked this. RD crying was too much, but she could have been more angry at her friends for what they did. As she says in page 11, they must try to tell her things first, no showing her how better they are AND being incredibly hypocritical.
ReplyDeleteShe forgave them though, and I'm okay with that.
ReplyDeleteOh goody.... hoof-wringing emo-pony....
ReplyDelete*sounds of violent vomiting, including a spoon clattering on a tile floor and the baaing of a sheep*
The real ponies are the antithesis of this sort of thing! Why do so many fans want to turn our peaceful, happy ponyfolk violent and/or gloomy?
Smile, smile, smile!
@Melon Hunter
ReplyDeleteThey did try and talk to her a little beforehand.
Aw dang it. Another excuse for people to complain about Mare-Do-Well. I for one enjoyed it just fine. I'm pretty sure we overthink stuff sometimes.
ReplyDelete@Melon HunterHow exactly did they boast? Was it when they didn't talk at all to the people they saved? Perhaps it was where they constantly tried to hide behind a mask so they didn't get credit? Or are you instead referring to when they explained how they accomplished said feats?
ReplyDeleteThey didn't boast about how awesome they were, and they most certainly didn't get Spike to follow them around to create a biography.
@Xian217
ReplyDeleteI believe he's referring to the scene in Sugarcube Corner where the others are praising Mare-Do-Well.
@ShadesofGrey18
ReplyDeleteWhere the gang were driving home the point that she's modest and humble yet also skilled? Sure it was a little bit mean, but to claim that such 3rd person boasting is the same as what RD did is a rather large stretch.
As far as comics go, I've read better. I didn't really like the art style and the plot seemed a bit all over the place. I was expecting some wangst and self-loathing but got a random fight scene followed by victimization of Rainbow Dash instead.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the Mysterious Mare Do Well.. I still hate the episode and believe every single character was a completely unsympathetic douche in it. These constant debates whenever the episode is brought up are getting a bit tiresome and repetitive, though.
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteWell, different strokes for different folks.
@Xian217
They were boasting about MDW's exploits right in front of Dash at Sugarcube Corner, to deliberately get a rise out of her.
EVERYPONY'S MAD :trollestia:
ReplyDeletebut seriously, y'all should just CALM THE BUCK DOWN. It's ONE BUCKING EPISODE everypony. How about we all love and tolerate each other's opinions and just enjoy the comic as it is?
@The Wandering Magus
ReplyDeleteYou don't understand! Whenever two people have a difference in opinions, there's only one way to settle it... FIGHT!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ajHs8tCWew
@Melon Hunter
ReplyDeletePerhaps it was less about humility.
ReplyDeleteIt's sweet, but somehow too much like a manga, not that I'm against manga (I read several) but it doesn't mix with MLP like this I guess.
ReplyDeleteA little bit cheesy xD
But I still enjoyed and liked it and saved every page in my mlp comic folder :D
@Xian217
ReplyDeleteYes!
ReplyDeleteIn Mare Do Well, she finally gets taken down a peg and gains some good character development, which makes me and those who share my views on the subject able to like and accept when episodes like 'Read It And Weep' come around, where she becomes a Butt Monkey to pay back for her previous attitude, and she gains/develops positive character traits and epiphanies.
@Xian217
ReplyDelete> Especially since she was against Trixie boasting.
It should be noted that RD was against Trixie's showing off, because, as she stated, that was her job. Boasting is one of the central (and IMHO deeply unsympathetic) parts of RD's character. She will occasionally act with grace and humility (as in the rescue in The Secret of my Excess), but that is the exception, not the rule.
ok i cried
ReplyDeleteok i cried
ReplyDeleteMare Do Well was basically a decent aesop (that was more or less a redux of Boast Busters, but whatever), told in a way that...left something to be desired, at best. At worst, it completely and utterly botched it.
ReplyDeleteThat said, while it's still my one of my least favorite episodes, I've come to just accept is as being the result of a new writer not really having gotten a feel for the show. Especially since Hearths Warming Eve turned out so well as Merriweather's sophomore effort, that's completely okay.
Great comic. Love the alternate ending.
ReplyDeleteOh no... This post reminded me of my little dashie...
ReplyDelete@Sothalic
ReplyDeleteNo, I'd say that "Read it and Weep" was the greatest way to redeem Dash after "Pet" and "Mare-do-Well" by leaving it later as it was presented.
And this is why I like the show for the characters and the humor and the storylines can go fly a kite for all I care.
ReplyDeleteI'm with TheBlackBaron and Carnivorous M. here: MDW had a decent aesop that Dash really needed to learn, but it could've been handled better.
ReplyDeleteThat said?
