A few days ago, we threw a "top five pony" discussion up. With a whopping 969 replies, it was obviously pretty popular!
I bet you all wondered who the winners were though. Thankfully, someone going by the name of Fluttertroll compiled everything for us. That's some seriously hard work right there!

Despite these polls, there's no way I'm changing my mind. Applejack (in my views) is best pony! I think episodes 14 and 15 will finally bump her up a bit.

A better time for this would have been after season 2 has finished I think, so that there's no subconscious bias due to lack of episodes. Still, a good poll, glad Luna did so well!

ReplyDeleteI think we could have all seen poor Applejack taking the more under-appreciation spot indeed. She seems to get the least amount of attention of any of the mane six so far. Perhaps that will change in the future. We shall see.
Luna beat out Celestia by A LOT. But that's no big surprise either. Luna has a much larger fanbase and following than her sister. I also prefer Luna over Celestia myself. She's in my top overall five too.

Third is great. And Lyra made the list too. I think it's no surprise to anyone that Derpy took top spot in that category. :P

Scootaloo won most popular CMC! She's my favorite of the CMC. Actually, my list of favorite to least favorite of the CMC's goes in that exact order. Sorry Applebloom. :(
And Trixie won best antagonist. I think we all knew it would either be her or Discord for that one. But Trixie actually won by quite a nice margin, wow.

and that's putting aside my immense dislike of Nyx, really fan fiction should not be considered much when asked who is your favorite character from the show cause canon characters vary wildly from fan fic to fan fic in how they are portrayed.
I agree that Discord was hell of a lot better villain than Trixie could ever be.
ReplyDeleteBut I think people want to see Trixie again, a Trixie that redeems herself in the eyes of the mane 6. I know I do and that's the main reason I like Trixie, not because she was the greatest villain, but because that she is one of those characters that would make a great redemption story.

Having not read the fanfics and feeling that OC ponies shouldn't be counted myself... I didn't actually keep score of them. Discord wasn't voted as much because the poll asked for Favorite PONY... people were discussing if that counted or not... I mean Tom the Rock... The Hydra and even the Sea serpent guy with facial hair in the 2nd episode got votes... So i counted anyone :P

I like Trixie as a character BECAUSE she's an arrogant self-centered bitch it made her entertaining, changing that would make her less fun.
But yeah im surprised she won that seeing as Discord is you know an actual threatening villain. Even Nightmare Moon who I regard as sort of ineffectual at least from what we saw was better as an antagonist than Trixie.

ReplyDeleteI don't quite see *why* it should matter if someone's basis for their favorite pony is canon or fanon or even an OC. If the poll said 'Pick you five favorite, fully developed characters from canon sources only', then sure. But it *WASN'T*. We were asked for five favorite ponies. Period. No qualifications attached.
If someone likes a 2 second background pony because it had an unusually specific character design or featured in a favorrite story they've read, that's no less legitimate than someone who likes a pony because episode was their favorite. Heck, if someone picks an OC as their favorite character, then congrats to the author for writing a pony that at least one person in the world liked *better* than the show ponies. That's no small feat and deserves to be acknowledged, even if it iss a marginal event.

I'll still never understand why people like Twilight so much. Compared to pretty much every single character, including some background characters, she's pretty bland. She's your typical egghead, goody-two-shoes character who, somehow, managed to make friends without even trying.

It really saddens me that Applejack was voted most underrated :/ I think she should have more admiration then what she's getting. AJ appears in almost every episode. I find she plays excellent roles as the sidekick character in episodes such as "The Cutie Pox", "Look Before You Sleep", "Sisterhooves Social", etc. Being a die hard Applejack fan, this disappoints me. I'll agree that Twilight deserves the 1st place win, because she's the "real" main character. Honestly I think Applejack deserves at least 4th or 3rd place. Here are some reasons why I think AJ should have gotten a better placing; Her character is strong, she's not stuck up, she has an awesome hat, and that accent? How can you NOT love that southern, Texas accent? Not afraid to speak up, she can come up with witty remarks and come back. Not to mention her vast appearances in the series. She is in every episode of season 2 by far, and she plays important roles in about 15 overall episodes. She does have her silly moments that make for a great bit of humor. These and probably many more reasons, give Applejack aspirations as a perfect character. I'm not mad, just disappointed that Applejack isn't getting enough love, especially with her two episodes just around the corner. With all that being said...Statistically, Applejack should have a 3rd spot placing. In my eyes, Best Pony for sure! : D

ReplyDeleteRarity I can agree with, but Twilight? No. She doesn't... do anything. And when she does, she does it in the most boring, 'an hero' type of way possible. I much prefer Rarity's over-dramaticness, Rainbow's snobby, arrogant but still awesomeness and Pinkie's randomness.

ReplyDeleteRarity is just your standard drama queen who happens to be generous so she doesn't fall into the utterly bland stereotype.
Twilight is fairly interesting, as a character. I find her infinitely more interesting than AJ or Fluttershy.

Twilight is usually the straightmare, of course she's generally more straightforward and less over the top than the rest of the cast, expect of course when the plot calls for her to be over the top.
I'll put RD up there too, Pinkie as much as I love her does not have that much to her character though she has more than AJ or Fluttershy.

I much prefer AJ as the grounded, sensible character. I find Twilight so boring in comparison.

I like Twilight more but honestly, Rarity is the most developed and full character on the show and I think she has the best episodes on average too.
@kineticpest Good. The reason Luna is liked more is because we can all relate to her. A lot of us have nothing in common with the Mane6. Luna was an outcast for 1000 years, and then no matter how she tried, she couldn't shake her previous rep. A lot of us feel lonely like her at least once in our lives. Now go to the kitchen and make yourself a sandwich.

ReplyDeleteThis is pretty much what I'm meaning to say. Twilight is pretty much like any typical main character of a show, however it is a kiddy show, so that is to be expected. But that won't stop me from not liking her as a character and not being able to really get why she's everyone's favourite.
AJ is, sadly, underrated, and I'm not saying that because all the 'cool kids' are right now. She is very underrated. Of all the main cast, she is the most mature and sensible character, and I like having a character like that in what could be considered an 'immature' show. Applejack is one of those characters who, for me, just defies expectations of what I expect one of the main characters to be like.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading the sea of comments... I can definitively say the general consensus is that Most people who voted for twilight sparkle did so for that very same reason... They could empathize with her the most. Glad to see Luna got so much love... But wow... I did not expect her to outmatch AJ or Rarity especially...

In all seriousness though, Twilight is actually one of the better 'bland main character in a TV show' in my opinion.
But like you said, it still doesn't stop me from liking her less than the rest of the six.

@Chaoyll Why? Because people needed to hear it. A lot of us wanted a pony we could relate to, and we got it. There are people out there lonlier than me, and they need to be aknowedged. That's why Luna got so high rankings.
