No offense to Tabitha, of course!
According to an email conversation - documented on reddit - when voicing Derpy Hooves for The Last Roundup, Tabitha St. Germain was unaware that Derpy was actually a filly! For those that thought she had somewhat of a male-sounding voice, there's your justification.
You can find the email screencap here.

WHAT.
ReplyDeleteWell we all make mistakes
ReplyDeleteWAT
ReplyDeleteTHE FLUX. RE DO THE EPISODE.
ReplyDeleteHuh. I couldn't tell.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. The voice still works for either gender, so it's not really a big deal.
ReplyDeleteLOL looks like Derpy's gonna get ANOTHER new voice! :D
ReplyDeletelol wut
ReplyDeletethis mistake is gangsta
ReplyDeleteWell that explains a bit.
ReplyDeleteThat explains why she sounds like my brother...
ReplyDeletehey tabitha, look to the bright side
ReplyDeleteeverything went better than expected /)^3^(\
the voice still suits for me though
Lololololol
ReplyDeleteCanon/Fanon apologetics go! Derpy has been taking voice acting lessons from Bon Bon.
ReplyDelete...
ReplyDeleteI am okay with this.
You know, to even be able to do a male sounding voice is amazing. Well done, voice talent extroadaniarre well done
ReplyDeletewell, that makes sense
ReplyDeleteNice...
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what else to say.
Ohhhhhh... Okay then.
ReplyDeleteThat explains why she sounded like my little cousin... :/
I hope she fixes this in future episodes though (assuming that Derpy shows up in any future episodes).
And then Derpy became the Hideyoshi of Equestria.
ReplyDeleteAfter the first line or two, she sounded great, so I'm not particularly fashed.
ReplyDeleteOh dear :o
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think she sounded male though :p
....I thought she sounded great! HOLY CRAP Derpy causes real people to derp!!!!
ReplyDeleteLMNEBO
ReplyDeleteWhat irks me is all the hate mail she got from bronies about it. Sometimes there are fans of this fandom that make me want to quit ponies.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletefor me sounded really good and sounded like filly.
ReplyDeleteAh, yeah. I know some people were talking about her sounding kinda male. Honestly, I wrote it off as that simply being a kinda "air-headed" voice as I know some mentally retarded people who have voices similiar in real life. Ah well, either way, I'm okay with this. :)
ReplyDelete@Makkon
ReplyDeleteI hear ya, Makkon. Some of the people in this community are just so... ugh, sometimes. Makes me almost want to quit at times too. Almost.
Wait... she got hate mail?!
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the voice myself, but COME ON! They voiced Derpy! Seriously, beggars trying to be choosers here. Makes me sick...
We still love you.
ReplyDeleteStill suited Derpy so not too bothered about it.
ReplyDelete@Makkon she got hate mail about voicing a character O.o
Voice of Derpy derpped Derpy, so now Derpy is male? Eh, it didn't sound THAT male-like. I kinda liked it. Almost sounded like the fanon voice, but less high pitched. I kinda liked that.
ReplyDeletethis has to be the biggest error on MLP yet.
ReplyDeleteI did see video of the chat rooms blow up when derpy talked and a lot of them said it sounded like a guy.
All's well that ends well Miss Tabitha! I loved Derpy's voice regardless and you're still best VA. Though, if Derpy has future speaking lines and you want to make her voice a little more feminine (blame it on Derpy having a cold) that's good too.
ReplyDelete@makkon *shrugs*
ReplyDeleteWell, life is a little something like that.
I'm not trying to start trouble..but how reliable is the source? I mean, they they have really goofed up that bad where she didn't know Derpy was a girl? hmm.
ReplyDeleteThe voice still works, maybe next time (if there is one) bring up the pitch a bit.
ReplyDelete@Octavia
ReplyDeleteIgnorance is a bliss sometimes.
You either refill a half full glass or you finish drinking it.
Some people are either too passionate or are just trying to destroy the fandom in general. We call these people "sl'lort".
To be fair, slow women sometimes do sound a bit male-ish...
ReplyDeleteLaughing my ass off hard.
ReplyDeleteSomeone makes a mistake, and not only that, but they base their interpretation of a character of someone they hold dear and we in response not only show but ungratefulness but also fill the creators, that person herself, the writer and pretty much all the staff behind it with hate mail.
ReplyDeleteTabitha making a mistake makes sense. The response some individuals of our fandom gave the whole Hasbro, does not.
Love and tolerance sometimes is very bright for its absence in our community.
And apparently not worth the time for a simple damn entry to stop these things from happening in the future.
/disappointed
Of all the possible things, this is
ReplyDeleteTHE
MOST
UNEXPECTEDLY AWESOME
MISTAKE!
I liked it! I thought it was very sweet, in a "mildly handicapped" way. Hope they don't change it.
ReplyDelete@my previous comment
ReplyDeleteWell, sometimes I wanna quit, but I would be leaving my only friends if I do so!!
I thought the voice was all right, but could be better.
ReplyDeleteI do find it weird that Ms. Germain didn't know Derpy was female.
I hope they don't change her voice to a more femine one. She sounded good, and if we suddenly have two different voices for our beloved Derpy for no explained reason. It wouldn't feel right.
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't see any problem with the voice... Didn't sound male to me, just sounded like someone slowish in the mind. (Which is kinda what Derpy is.)
ReplyDeleteErr, actually, I feel like I should probably send Tabitha an email, or something, just to compliment her on her work of Derpy. It didn't sound at all that bad. Some fans though... -.-;
ReplyDeleteGUH
ReplyDeleteokay. i'm okay now. i mean, i was fine with the voice before this, uh, revelation, and nothing's changed. :)
@Dusty the Royal Janitor
yeah, and the writer got a very few disappointed/angry letters about the portrayal as well, though the number was dwarfed by the overwhelming support she received.
Oh lol.
ReplyDeleteI loved Derpy's voice. It, and her clutzyness (inventing words like a boss), were adorable.
Still, I can't get over the fact that people were mind-numbingly stupid - and ungrateful - enough to send hate mail about Ponies. I just hope that it doesn't dissuade the people from the show from interacting with us, because that is one of the best parts of the whole pony craze.
It's all good. That scene got me thinking that Derpy hero-worships Rainbow Dash, so it'd make sense that she tries to talk like her.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, the pitch of the voice is roughly the same as Rainbow Dash and Applejack's, so I'd say it works fine for a female character.
She got hate mail? That's not very fair, they gave us something we pretty much asked for.
ReplyDeleteDerpy is adorable, no matter what kind of voice Tabitha decides to use.
Frankly, I think the whole mix-up is hilarious in a good way. I'm kinda hoping the Derpy-haters and Tabitha and everyone can have a good laugh at the whoopsie, then calm down and move on.
ReplyDelete@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteI'm not among that list I bet? But then again I hardly do much in the community except steer a vast amount of ideas into it like the Titanic into an iceberg.
Someone give me a heads up on that non existent Kirby/Ponies crossover fan fiction.
They better keep this voice; not because of the way it sounds, but because of the nature of Derpy.
ReplyDeleteHer eyes were initially an animation error, and now her voice was accidently masculine.
Derpy's gotta derp!
I thought Derpy's voice sounded feminine enough...
ReplyDeleteEither way, I still support Shakugan no Derpy, even if Tabitha raises the pitch in her voice in future appearances.
It's depressing that some people can't be happy with what they're given and have to find fault with it. Anyone who would go so far as to send hate mail over what was essentially a gift by the studio to us really doesn't deserve to be a part of this fandom. They certainly aren't following the ideals of Love and Tolerance.
ReplyDeleteI think the best thing we can do is to make sure that we keep up a high level of positivity towards the people that make the show possible, and distance ourselves from the discourteous element
It's not entirely Tabitha's fault. We should also blame Terry Klassen, the voice director, James Wootton, the co-director, Jayson Thiessen, the supervising director, and Sarah Wall, the producer.
ReplyDeleteSurely two or more of those people were present when Tabitha was recording her Derpy lines and they could have told her that Derpy was phyisically designed as a female character and had been female ever since the first episode?
Did they have auditions for the role of Derpy? Based on this mistake, it doesn't seem so. I wonder how they chose Tabitha to voice her?
@tlarn
ReplyDeleteI second this! Derpy defies your quaint notion of categories!
Why would you...?
ReplyDeleteWell. I guess that does make the scene much more derpy.
I honestly couldn't tell. She didn't sound manly to me. I just thoughtit sounded silly.
I thought she sounded more female than male thb :\
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with what Makkon and etc. said. Sometimes I want to stay far far away from the brony community because of the idiots in it. But then I see people like MictheMic, JackleApp, The Living Tombstone etc, and I start loving the community again.
They could have at least shown Tabitha a picture of Derpy before she recorded! Who doesn't look at a picture of the character they're voicing before recording?
ReplyDeleteAHAH!
ReplyDeleteI guess Derpy's derpyness is so darned extreme it even effects the voice actors!
Well if she didn't know and the people around her thought it was fine (I thought it was a good voice) then on one would of said anything
ReplyDelete@tlarn
ReplyDeleteYou know, that works perfectly! Derpy, the pony of many errors.
"...the nature of Derpy.
ReplyDeleteHer eyes were initially an animation error, and now her voice was accidently masculine"
I second this motion.
*brohoofs tlarn*
How can you voice something without knowing anything about it?
ReplyDelete@Makkon
ReplyDeleteShe got hatemail over it??!
Dafuq?
Sometimes I just don't understand people...
...don't do this to the fandom guys.
@tlarn
ReplyDeleteGIVE
THIS
MAN (WOMAN, maybe, I dunno)
A
MEDAL
@Jordan Why are we allocating blame, exactly?
ReplyDelete@Jordan
ReplyDeleteDid no one told you that pointing with your finger is extremely rude?
We shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth, and not only we're doing it but also analyzing every little bit, taking samples and sending them to the CSI to know who the vets are so we can go and fill them with crap.
I mean come on, can't we just be glad about it, it was a very happy moment in our history. Hooray?
Instead of wanting to find someone to blame? Or sending hate mail? Hm?
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeleteHeads up!!
@tlarn That's entirely fitting. Make it so!
ReplyDelete@Arothyss
ReplyDeleteBy the way Makkon, I'm still enjoying your remix of "For the New Lunar Republic" err'day on my iPod Touch.
It's on my "Running" list along with Chariots of Fire and Thousand Foot Krutch's "Smackdown".
Thought you'd like to know!
I think Derpy sounded fine! Why would fans send hate mail when everyone's favourite fandom pony was integrated into the show?
ReplyDeleteLet the Rule 63 fanart of Derpy commence!
ReplyDeleteMy opinion:
ReplyDeletestop argueeing and watch the show
For all the ones whining and trying to get a petition to get hasbro to apologize.
ReplyDeleteThis...this is the reason why you stop and ASK first before sticking your pretentious head farther up your "Sun don't shine"
For shame people, for shame.
I honestly didn't think she sounded like a guy. Her current voice is fine. Calm the hell down, everyone.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought that the voice worked really well with the character! also really? hate mail? I'm ashamed!
ReplyDeleteI liked the voice. I hope it doesn't change :(
ReplyDeleteI liked Derpy's voice.
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously, hate mail? Bugger all that for a lark.
@Makkon
ReplyDeleteThat is just beyond sad.
Can't say I was ecstatic with Derpy's voice, but it wasn't exactly terrible either.
And even if it was, there is absolutely no cause to go about harassing the voice actress about it, especially after all the amazing work she has done on other characters.
Some of these fanatical fans need to just take a chill pill and calm the fuck down.
@Pav Feira
ReplyDeleteYES. I love you for that.
In all honesty, I liked how her voice sounded, but to get hate mail over it is just crazy! Heck, this is a gift to us from the studio, can't some of us be happy she actually has a voice? :/
ReplyDelete@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteThank you. (Still though, Kracko Vs. Rainbow Dash, Darkmatter Vs. Twilight, Luna Vs. Mr. Bright with Celestia Vs. Mr. Shine, Dedede Vs. Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy Vs. Ice Dragon, Applejack Vs. Whispy Woods and Rarity Vs. Wham Bam Rock. COME ON!!! Tell me I'm not the only one that see's the fan fiction oppurtunity, even as poor a writer as I am.)
@Tlarn
Muffin Queen is Muffin Queen no matter the circumstances. Her first word was "Muffins", the fact that she got more lines is like Bon-bon quite special... only Derpy is actually named in the show whereas Bon-bon has yet to be.
I dunno about anyone else, but finding out that Tabitha based Derpy's voice on a neighbor's son made it even more adorable to me.
ReplyDelete@Makkon
ReplyDeleteI actually heard she only got around 5 emails, with around 50 in support. It wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. We didn't even post it because of that.
Seriously, hate mail? Petitions? This is making me sick, especially since I like her voice the way it is.
ReplyDeleteEven the voice actress Derped, you Derpie, you
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not even even the VAs are safe from Rule 63!
ReplyDeleteI think we should all send something to Tabitha to counter the (idiotic) hate mail. I actually kind of liked Derpy's voice. I couldn't even tell it was her. The lady's got some serious range.
ReplyDelete@Jordan
ReplyDeleteI was thinking rather the same thing myself, not that I actually want to blame anyone (I don't have a problem with Derpy's voice as-is). The people who are seemingly upset about it though should realize there were many people involved who did not catch or correct the mistake, and should certainly not be sending hate mail to Tabitha over such an error. That's just ridiculous.
It kind of makes you wonder why nobody caught it in recording.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if it'll be re-dubbed in future releases... and if Ditzy Doo will be redubbed as Derpy in Winter Wrap-Up just the same. If not, no problemo.
Hey, let's make a petition for all the crybabies to apologize to Derpy and the showrunners.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha well I didn't think it was noticeably male so no worries.
ReplyDelete@Sethisto only five??
ReplyDelete@WhiteDiamonds
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you. There shouldn't be hatemail and stuff over Derpy's voice.
@Graveheart
ReplyDeleteDerpy said it was fine while they were in the studio. Nobody questioned her low-to-high range of pitch voice as it changes at times.
I felt Twilights first line was more off then anything and was the only thing that bothered me in respects to voice acting.
I had that thought this morning when I rewatched the episode, but it still suits her better than any weaboo I GOTS YOU A LETTER voice would
ReplyDeleteWhat I should say is: Derpy's voice sounds fine as it is, but knowing that it was performed as a male character is mildly irritating to me, and there were many ways in which it could have been prevented.
ReplyDeleteActually improves the character, because that means the VOICE ACTRESS derped too! The derp, it goes on FOREVER.
ReplyDelete...Bahahahahahaha oh god. This just made my day.
ReplyDeleteLet the shipping commence!
ReplyDeleteHate mail? Some bronies badly needs a lesson in love and tolerance. Go watch Dressed for Success again.
ReplyDeleteDon't look a gift Derpy in the mouth!
Let the shipping commence!
ReplyDelete@MasterofRoku
ReplyDeleteReally. Talk about immature; anybody who has that sort of time on their hands and the desire to get worked up over things should get involved in political lobbying, or some other activity that would make better use of their aggressive energies...
And petition, what? Oh, I do hope whoever brought that up was joking when they said it...
In Poland Spitfire is male.
ReplyDeleteIn USA Derpy is.
Release the restless shippers!
Derpy's voice was nothing like I imagined it to be, but I liked it anyway. If Tabitha should voice Derpy again, I'd prefer it to stay the same, tlarn is definitely on to something.
ReplyDeleteHowever if they want to change the pitch a little, I'm not going to get all up in arms over it.
I guess with Derpy being such an iconic part of the fandom, it's only natural that she'd be subject to a lot of scrutiny on her debut, and some people might not like what they see.
But sending hate mail about something that is basically a gift is SO not a good way to represent bronydom.
Derpy is awesome and that's all there is to it.
1.Derpy's voice was just fine for a pony named Derpy.
ReplyDelete2. This is gonna make it easier to imitate for fan-works, isn't it?
3. Derpy's derpiness transcends the character herself. DERPCEPTION
Unpleaseable whiners. Sadly, they exist in every fanbase...even ours.
ReplyDeleteOk, yea, I had my own hang ups about the voice, but I'm thoroughly tired of people acting entitled about this show. Tabitha and the writers gave us a dialog scene with a fan-favorite background character who, by all rights, shouldn't even be a thing, and you start tearing it apart? Screw that, and screw you. I am now entirely, 100% behind the voice as it is. And thank you, Tabitha. Thank you for always being so consistently awesome.
ReplyDeleteI do actually like the "let's give Hasbro a thank you gift for Derpy" idea. I mean sure, EqD was reskined for a while and all, but I'm sure the community at large could put something together too. Plus, in light of this hate-mail drama... (Even if Seth claims that story is blown out of proportions, it still looks really bad on the rest of us)
ReplyDelete@Sethisto
ReplyDeleteThat's a relief, but the fact that she got any was already too much.
@Azure Heh, Derpy, the 5th-wall-breaker
ReplyDeleteDerpception! I thought she just sounded tomboyish, and think it was a great voice for miss Derpy!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think Derpy's voice sounded male! I did think it sounded a lot like some mentally handicapped kids I know, which worried me because that's a whole new can of political-correctedness worms that I don't think even this show can handle, especially in a one-minute clip meant as a shout-out rather than a lesson. But I think it's sweet that Tabitha based Derpy's voice on someone she knew :D
ReplyDeleteAlso, *brohoofs tlarn* I like this idea!
Rule 63 Derpy time.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I loved the voice. I know some women in real life who have voices like that due to brain injuries.
@Pav Feira
ReplyDeleteI like this as well! I wonder what we could do?
@Pav Feira
ReplyDeleteI also second this motion.
Bummer to hear about the hate mail. I liked the voice myself, especially when you consider how many different voices she does for the show and trying to make them all sound different.
ReplyDeleteI sent Amy Keating Rogers a complimentary email and we had a very nice conversation about the episode and she answered my questions. I thought it was cool of her to do that.
LOVED IT! It is a very unique voice for a girl pony to have.
ReplyDeleteThis is a kind of a genius mistake that happened and I hope she keeps it somewhat boyish because that's kind of the charm of Derpy's voice to me.
lmfao she derped Derpy, this is just rich
ReplyDeleteDerpception
WE NEED TO GO DEEPER
So THATS why her voice was so bad.
ReplyDeleteI hope they keep the voice, but make it slightly more bubbly... then it's sorted :)
ReplyDeleteAs for the hate mail, shame on those hypocritical 'fans' who call themselves bronies. L&T people!
I'm really dissapointed in the script writer or the voice director, whoever's job it is.
ReplyDeleteI mean the fact whether a character is male or female, that's pretty important.
I dont mind the voice but the fact that it could've been cuter and more feminine sounding may have gone a long way to placating the confusion and anger at Derpy's voice from the minority who hated the voice.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletePersonnally, i was like: "OMG THEY CALLED HER DERPY! hey the voice is a bit different.... BUT THEY CALLED HER DERPY OMG!!!!"
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, mistakes happens lol.
@Flutterfan
ReplyDeleteThe script writer is not responsible for casting the voices on the show.
However, I understand your sentiment. I kind of wished they let Tabitha know that the character was female.
While I'm not entirely happy with the voice, I'm still utterly thrilled she was named and showed up in an episode at all. Derpy is a truly wonderful gift. :)
@Makkon
ReplyDeleteWhile it's true Amy Keating Rogers and Tabitha St. Germain got some negative feedback, once a bunch of us learned of this we became indignant about it. We did the only sane thing we could think of! A bunch of us decided to send them very polite and professional e-mails in support of the show and Derpy.
I hear Amy only got 5 negative e-mails, but received more than 30 POSITIVE ones by late Tuesday morning. She responded within hours and thanked me for the kind letter. She loves getting positive feedback for her work!
I just e-mailed Tabitha tonight hearing about the news of any "hate mail" about Derpy. I've only sent her a very polite letter I've been wanting to send her anyway, thanking her for absolutely amazing work on the show.
So yeah. I hear Tabitha received far more positive feedback than negative, also. :)
I think objectionable behavior is unavoidable. You're going to find it in every single fandom. I think it's just a human behavior thing. I personally think it's hardly worth getting upset over.
Kind of disappointing, but Derpy's canon voice is androgynous enough to be satisfied with.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I would be perfectly happy if they redid her voice for next time she spoke.
Or, best of both worlds, next time she has lines, keep more or less the same voice, just try to make it sound slightly more feminine. There was nothing wrong with her "Go Applejack! Whoo!"
You know what? This turn of events just might be all the more fitting.
ReplyDeleteThe voice is fine, maybe it sounded a little bit younger than it should be (girl in applebloom's age could easily be imagined to sound like this), but of course i actually don't know how it should sound, so i'm totally ok with it.
ReplyDeleteI really don't know what the problem is for some people. It really is insulting that some would write hate mail.
ReplyDeleteYet, I really liked Derpy's voice if only because it /was/ different. I don't think the whole cartoon should revolve around all female characters sounding inherently feminine.
Voices have versatility, why can't the same be true for the show? /Especially/ considering that the show is breaking the mold on what's considered to be 'too girly'. Couldn't too girly apply to the voices too? That isn't to say all of them should be walking around all mixed up, but versatility isn't a bad thing.
Derp on, Derpy. :P Tabitha and the rest did us a great favor and I find it very cute that the voice was based on someone in actuality.
@Graveheart
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt they will replace Ditzy in Winter Wrap Up with Derpy. Derpy herself is shown to be in town when Ditzy is out getting the birds.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even find it that bad. People think like real idiots sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWe bronies will always appreciate the effort that you guys do <3
ReplyDeleteIt's just like getting a present from someone you care about, "It's the thought that counts," and that's why having Derpy talk in an episode was just too amazing to see any problems in it.
Wait wait wait wait wait... Tabitha says she never heard anyone reference Derpy as a girl and didn't know what Derpy looks like? Clearly she does not partake in the fruits of her labor. She should watch the show more to prevent further accidents.
ReplyDeleteDerpy's name and her lines were gender neutral, so I can see how it could happen. Odd how nobody mentioned her gender to the actor, though. I still like her voice. It's definitely not worth sending hate mail over.
ReplyDeletei guess this renders derpy a mystery character again??
ReplyDeleteIrony... Derpy has it...
ReplyDeleteStill sounded like a girl to me just a little rough and dopey.
ReplyDeleteI liked it.
Oops, well we all make mistakes. I like Derpy's voice anyway, It's sort of cute.
ReplyDelete(but she got hate mail? What the hell?)
It makes so much sense now.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't make me love you any less Tabitha. :D And we could always say that she was sick that day and was (wait for it....) a little hoarse.
tlarn wins everything. We now have not only accidental eyes but a lovely accidental contralto voice for Derpy. It just keeps getting better and better if you look at it a certain way!
ReplyDelete@Androidred0100
ReplyDeleteDerpy's barely IN the show, and never had that name until The Last Roundup itself. The Last Roundup might have been recorded even before Lesson Zero aired, which is the first episode that had a sequence with Derpy front and center. (Feeling Pinkie Keen, containing Derpy's first appearance, didn't feature Rarity or any other Tabitha voice - she might have plain skipped it.) Even if Lesson Zero had aired before she went to record The Last Roundup, she'd still have had to spot the sequence, connect that derped pegasus with the Derpy phenomenon, and recognize that pegasus' shape as a female shape.
I can see how this mistake would happen, and luckily, it doesn't matter. Her "male" voice wasn't exactly Flutterguy. She modeled it after a kid, and boys pre voice change sound not very much different from girls at all. If it had been noticable, any of the directors would have spotted it.
I think it's great that the voice actors respond to email of fans, and receive enough positive response that the hate mail is accepted as the natural side effect of simply HAVING a vocal fanbase. I should have reminded myself of that much sooner.
that's hillarious!
ReplyDeleteah well, it's all ion good fun, right?!
The odd thing is that the voice she used sounded similar to one she knew to be female. I just hope that if she's asked to perform the character again, I don't have to hear Hayley from What About Mimi?
ReplyDeletethat explains EVERYTHING
ReplyDeleteLove. And. Peace!
ReplyDeleteOh wait, wrong fandom.
well, this explains a lot canonwise. fanonwise, I still blame doctor whooves.
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't change the voice. I thought it suited her.
ReplyDeleteTabitha is so cute.... :3
ReplyDeleteTabitha is so cute.... :3
ReplyDeletea voiceacting error suits Derpy, a character born from an animation "error", perfectly. Derpy is gonna Derp!
ReplyDeleteif they want to make her voice sound more feminine next time( we all hope there will be another derpy time!), they can just pretend in "the last roundup" she has a cold, but there is absolutely no need to change voiceactress or to make her voice sounds completely different: most find her actual voice good and to fit the character finely!
and please....don't hatemail Hasbro/showrunners/voiceactors etc... it's just silly. if you are really upset for something just ask them politely why the choosed to did something that way.
I liked her voice most when she sad "You ok Rainbowdash?"
ReplyDeleteEither way i'm not annoyed about it. I am however annoyed that some people apparently sent them hate mail, it's inevtiable with such a large fandom that some will dislike it but I still don't like it.
Nice to hear the support letters outweighed them though.
I KNEW IT! I knew She KINDA sounded like ED from Ed, Edd, Eddy
ReplyDeleteThe derp is strong in this one.
ReplyDeleteNow I wonder what are they going to do with the voice... (will Derpy become the next Bon-Bon?)
ps: Tabitha is still best pony.
So now we know that Tabitha isn't a brony. It's kind of a weird thing, seeing as you'd think she has a stronger attachment to the show, but...
ReplyDelete'I just don't know what went wrong!'
Oh wow, this is so appropriate! Derpy's voice was an accident too! It took me off guard, like a lot of you, but I liked it. The voice was "boyish", but not an actual guy, and the slight lisp balanced it out. Heck, Tabitha still managed to make it cute. I've known girls with voices similar to Derpy's, so I was ok with it pretty quickly. If Derpy has anymore lines in the series I'm sure Tabitha can tweak the voice a little so it's more girlish, but not actually changing it.
ReplyDeleteI think the fandom has to remember something: We've all got our own headcanon, and even if it's something generally accepted, it's maybe (likely) to be incorrect in the actual show. We can't get upset when things don't turn out exactly as we expected/wanted.
And then everything was OK, because Derpy derp'd one of the less derpy voice actors.
ReplyDeleteI have a way to make this canon, but it might cause a dramabomb...
ReplyDeleteDerpy may be transgendered.
Ambiguously disabled and ambiguously transgendered, and we love her all the same.
I'm actually pleased, her rendition sounded more to what I imagined in my head than what others expected (balddumborat).
ReplyDeleteI hope, if Derpy speaks again, Tabitha keeps her voice the same.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI love you Tabitha.
ReplyDeleteim ok with the voice, not a big deal
ReplyDelete@Socially Inept Luna
ReplyDeleteI wish I could your post, because I'm amazed how many people misunderstand that.
Derpy's voice was great, imo... And yeah, it could have been a boy's voice, but not really a man's, so it worked fine for her. I suspect nobody at the recording studio corrected her because nobody else had the mental picture of the boy she knew in mind, and the voice still fit for a young mare.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first got into the show I thought Derpy was male as well, so I can't fault her there xD
ReplyDeleteI kind of see what people who have a problem are getting at, but they shouldn't be slapping 'mentally handicapped' on someone with that manner of speaking so easily. Some people do just talk like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm also cool with the idea of Derpy being a guy. He seems 'bubbly' that way. Pardon the pun.
At first I kinda disliked her voice, but then I began to like it. I think it should remain as it is. Fits her.
ReplyDeletelol that's funny. I usually can't tell if a kid is a boy or a girl just by their voice, they sound alike to me so I didn't noticed derpy's boy voice XD
ReplyDeleteTabitha you are awesome!
Personally while Derpy did sound more manly at least she still sounded female. An ambiguous voice is fine and the episode was worth it's weight in gold bits.
ReplyDeleteIn the future she can easily embrace that voice and tune it to be more feminine but I for one think it was a fantastic episode and would not want to lose what we got with a possibly less cute voice.
BESIDES this is why they don't read fanfiction or fan dubs, it can lock your min into viewing a character in a certain way and if you can't take the canon and the fanon for what they are individually then please don't go whining because it's not how you viewed or heard/seen them as.
Tabitha gave us a cute voice for our cute little mascot and you should be glad she got any love at all this season. let alone an almost 2 minute long scene!
P.S. I will continue to keep canon and fanon separate thank you. basing stuff off canon is great but just because something turns out canon later on that differs from your views, it shouldn't stop you from continuing to love some other fanon universe.
I still love it when some stories or parodies use Bright eyes in place of the usual name sake. Works well in some stories.
Her voice sounded perfectly female to me, I didn't see anything wrong with it...
ReplyDeleteHer voice for Derpy is excellent. At first, I thought it was Rainbow Dash's voice actress that did the voice, and for that reason I didn't think it was meant to be a male voice. I hope they don't change it because it's just going to make it inconsistent, like Bon Bon.
ReplyDeleteDerpy confirmed as manliest pony.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with Tabitha's derp as is, but rather with how ridiculous the fact that noone mentioned the gender of Derpy to her. Furthermore, I assume a number of people have heard the recording - did noone stop and ask why it sounded so deep? I don't want the "I got you a letter!" voice, but the current one just seemed a bit odd, and knowing it was wrong just makes it stand out even more. However hate mail is a far too primitive way to go about it, and hopefully if Derpy ever speaks again she'll have a slightly more normal voice.
ReplyDeleteLiked the voice if Derpy keeps showing up I hope they keep it.
ReplyDeleteWell, this puts Studio B in a bit of a fix. Press on with the initial voice or try to change it? People will be upset either way.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like the original just fine, but I'll probably be okay with whatever they do. :)
Hope they stick with the current dopey voice, it actually fits very well.
ReplyDeleteNo pony's perfect.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they'll adjust her voice in future episodes?
In all honesty I didn't care if she was a filly or not, I mean in my eyes the current voice did fit her character.
ReplyDeleteSo don't change a thing. :D
I loved the voice, and think it fit Derpy perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI really wish they wouldn't tell us things like this. I would have been happier remaining ignorant. Now if she uses the same voice again it's going to be ruined for me.
ReplyDeleteNot much to say here, just taht I find it sickening some people feel entitled to send hatemail about this. What the hay? The crew gives us this awesome shout-out, and this is what they get in return?
ReplyDeleteOn a sidenote, I loved the Derpy voice. Fit her perfectly. I wasn't looking at the screen when I heard her line, but I immediately pictured Derpy saying it. Didn't think it was particularly male or female.
Hm, well I personally did think it sounded like little kids I knew more than anything so I didn't really understand the rage. Actually still don't. Shameful that people get so upset about little imagined flaws. Kudos to all of you who already seem to understand things like "enjoying the little things in life" and "tolerance."
ReplyDeleteOn a happier note, I thought the reasoning she gave for the voice was incredibly sweet. I d'aaawwed in my mind.
It kinda worked out though. If Derpy were too feminine it would make her sound weird.

ReplyDeleteI didn't even notice that with the voice until now. To be honest I viewed Derpy as a male at first. Same with Vinyl Scratch. It was the fanon that convinced me they were female.
ReplyDeleteHate mail for it? Jesus christ. If this fanbase devolves into something like the Sonic fanbase i'm out.
It really blows my mind how ungrateful people are. The people involved with the show took the time, effort, and money to canonize a background pony just for us, and people thank them by sending them hate mail about how it wasn't good enough? We're like a bunch of spoiled children! Why can't we just be grateful that Derpy was NAMED and had not just one or two lines, but a whole SCENE. Honestly bronies. We've been known for our good attitudes. Let's not spoil that.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe people sent her hate mail. That kind of pisses me off.
ReplyDeleteI seem to recall reading an interview with Lauren Faust some time ago that stated the VA's were discouraged from reading any fanfics and the like the community puts out. That being said, she probably only had the name "Derpy" to go off of, so it makes sense how she could make a mistake.
ReplyDeleteWho cares? The voice worked perfectly fine. Anyone freaking out about this and, if some of the above comments are accurate, sending hatemail, are pathetic. Seriously. Why do so many people in this fandom overreact about everything?
ReplyDeleteGod. You'd think these people watch the show just to pick out faults and to bitch about it.
Bronies, i propose we try and rectify this hate mail garbage by sending some love mail to Tabitha. Though I'm guessing that's probably already happened.
ReplyDeleteHeh. Interesting. Still, the voice she used sounded to me like a somewhat older, albeit still young, ditzy girl. I thought it worked fine.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could evict these idiots who send *hate mail* to the people who make our beloved show from the fandom.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping the pony fandom would be different, with less stupid than the furry fandom which I'm also part of. It turns out there's just as much stupid, just a different kind.
Sigh.
I thought Derpy was a boy in the beginning, too. I thought her voice in the show was great. :)
ReplyDeleteOmg she got hate mail. I admit once you get over the excitment her voice wasnt that cute, but still cute enough for me. But hate mail is a little harsh we must remember this show was suppose to be for little girls. Im sure she was thinking that Derpy was a little younger then everypony else. Now that I think about it that voice was cute. Anyway she did a great job in my opinoin.
