Two Applejack episodes in a row, and they both turned out okay!
Excluding Derpy's surprise appearance in the first one, these were two pretty solid episodes, even if this one was a bit more contained in terms of locale and consequences. I'm tempted to call it a slice-of-life episode, so I think that's what I'll stick with as far as a label is concerned. We got some new background ponies out of the deal, at least one not-so-overt pop culture reference, and probably the best letter to Celestia I've heard in the entire series.
Let's make some cider!
With the exception of the very beginning sequence with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, the entire episode was contained to that few square meters in front of the cider stand and the field behind it. Not a good or a bad thing, but interesting to note.
This episode was a goldmine of amusing faces from Dash. She just gets shafted throughout the entire episode! It was really funny to watch. Have a few more.
Is this some kind of cruel joke? |
I love you again, Rainbow Dash.
The two characters that drove the plot today were Flim and Flam. I'm not sure which is which, if we're honest. I don't think it matters much. All I can say is that their manes remind me of either toothpaste or cartoon bacon. Either way, it's probably delicious.
Okay, sorry, one more Dash. I love her faces so much.
I know we've been told the technology level of Equestria is just whatever the writers need it to be at the time, so I won't pick at this machine too much. I just wanted to point out one thing that was interesting- if it's comparing apples one by one, how is it any quicker than Granny Smith, who was pretty much doing the exact same thing at the exact same speed, if not quicker? Are there more internals we can't see? Is that part just for show?
I'm being picky, sorry. It's cause I love this show.
If this isn't a reference, I'll eat my horseshoes.
Another thing I noted is that we heard the words 'cent' and 'bit' used in the same scene. Was that intentional, or did someone derp? Again, yes, picky, but it was interesting.
I know I said it already, but this was the best letter to Celestia I've heard, simply because it played with the formula that we're familiar with so well, and it showed actual character development for Applejack, which is something she's sorely needed for a long time.
That's all Cereal has to say- let's look at some community-submitted stuff!
Excited Lyra spotted! |
Derpy spotted! |
New background ponies! Anyone want to name them? |
Next episode: Applejack on the moon. |
Later, ponies!

The speed at which content is generated at astounds me.
ReplyDeleteLoved this episode! :D
ReplyDeleteFirst! ... I feel so ashamed...
ReplyDeleteA couple things: One: I'm not sure if it was just me, but Flim and Flam's song reminded me of "Be Our Guest", at least in the music of it. Just my idea. Two: The episode's plot reminded me of the Fosters episode where Bloo got his stubs on the cookie recipe, at least in the concept. Just some interesting things I thought people might like to know.
ReplyDeleteEven moreso now that I'm too late...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who spotted Lyra...
ReplyDeleteAnd, as always, here's my timed review of the episode!
ReplyDeletehttp://awthredestim.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic_29.html
Now, guys, take it as it is: Just opinion. I hope you all enjoy it, let me know what you think of it on the comments :D Thank you all!
Is that a Thor pony in the middle?
ReplyDeleteWhat, nothing about the scene in the song with Berry Punch? Lol, I thought for sure that would be in the follow-up.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's better to have hair made out of bacon than hair that looks like a muffin because nopony eats bacon.
ReplyDeleteBeen a while since I commented on these follow ups. LOLs were definitely had during this episode. Glad everything worked out for Rainbow in the end, even if the writers did decide to screw around with her throughout the whole episode. My sister and myself actually found ourselves clapping throughout the song if you can believe that; it was quite the catchy number. And the letter to the princess...just priceless. Please, Celestia, don't send AJ to the moon. She was just having some well deserved fun, especially after those Flim Flam idiots essentially got booed out of town. Long story short, this was a great episode. Perhaps it was a tad weak at points, but nothing I'd beat the MLP team over. Not that I would. They work so hard on these episodes time and time again. Least we can do is show them our appreciation.
ReplyDeleteI think for the pony with the lightning and hammer it should be something like Thorla xD I love the design of the darker one, maybe Kami Cazi? Something more interesting then just a name off her cutie mark.
ReplyDeleteAnd best musical is best :D Rd's faces were great
I did find this episode to be quite fun. The faces just made it slide into a great spot on my fave list.
ReplyDeleteThe Lyrabomb actually happened twice in the episode.
ReplyDeleteSolid episode all around. I loved the Lyra bit lol.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking of Ponyville as turn of the century tech. The only thing that keeps that from being true is the computing devices Twilight had in her basement during Pinkie Keen
Cereal loves Dashie? =D
ReplyDeleteApple Pie month Ruled!! I loved every episode this month :D
ReplyDeleteApplejack's victory trot was so cute and the letter to Princess Celestia was so funny xD
This was a great episode :D
ReplyDeleteUsually i don't like AJ.. but that letter
As for "cent" and "bit"... It sounded like to me like there's a certain number of cents to one bit. Considering bits appear to be pretty valuable, it kinda makes sense.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe I am just behind on my facts, but one of the brothers (Celestia knows if it was Flim or Flam)mentioned "the kingdom of Canterlot"
ReplyDeleteIn the bit during the intro when Rainbow Dash pulls the blankets off of Fluttershy, RD looks upset that Fluttershy covers her self up. I'm just saying..
ReplyDeleteDamn fine episode that is.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I saw a mare with the doctors cutie mark in that episode wonder why no one caught that. Imma check again
ReplyDeleteIt's a good setup for the next episode because we now know that Rainbow Dash gets checked in to the hospital for liver failure due to her alcoholism.
ReplyDeletePurple Luck, Thorina, and Gadget.
ReplyDeleteThor pony already has an ask blog, named after Thor's hammer, Mjölnir. Or in this case, Mjölna.
ReplyDeletehttp://ask-mjolna.tumblr.com/
(no, not mine)
I personally love the coloring of the pony next to her with the wrench cutie mark :o
The Mane 5 (minus AJ) split screen with their heads over hte apples reminded me of a LOT of Voltron and Power Rangers.
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'.
Thanks for the follow up. Really enjoyed this episode, was nice to see AJ develop a bit and yes that letter was the best in the series so far ^^
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this episode immensely.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason the Flim Flam bothers song made me think of a pantomime. Also I'd like to see another episode were the rest of Ponyville's citizens are more involved in the plot.
That pony with the hammer cutie mark kinda looks like my mom, and she absolutely LOVES Thor.
ReplyDeleteI say we name her Mjolnir (pronounced Myolner) after Thor's hammer
I really liked this episode! Rainbow Dash was pretty awesome in it.
ReplyDeleteI think there was another Lyrabomb at the end of the episode, after the Apples get their farm back
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a wonderful. The intro bit was funny, the song was enjoyable and the ending was priceless. The only other thing I have to say is: CIDER, CIDER, CIDER, CIDER, CIDER, CIDER, CIDER.
ReplyDeleteMiddle pony should be Thor.
ReplyDeleteI really hope someone caught the reference to "The Flim-Flam Man" who is a wondering sales/con-man
ReplyDeleteLoved this Episode and absolutely love Applejacks letter to the Princess...laughed till my hooves hurt :p
ReplyDeleteMy only Question is...did anyone see Berry in this episode...I didn't...Is cider maybe to "soft" for her or something.
as for the two new backround ponies I actually did think of names the minute I saw their Cutie Marks.
Thorra - because it looks like a mare with a hammer over a thunderbolt (daughter of Oden go forth and Neigh)
And Rachetta for the other one (My friend played a lot of Rachet and Clank *shrugs*)
Hammer with lightning flank... either thor, or valkiere
ReplyDeleteYes. Lyra did indeed jump up in two separate scenes.
ReplyDeleteUmm, is that middle pony one of the ones that make thunder clouds?
ReplyDeleteI loved all of Dash's faces, all she wanted was some cider and kept getting the end of it. I hope she for a refund for that one bit she gave.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone cares, Lyra showed up about three times in a single scene.
Even though I don't watch Doctor Who, I'd love to see him eat horseshoes.
As well during the Flim Flam brothers song, was anyone else disturbed by the leg wobble? It just seemed....werid...
Them again since when has anything in this fandom made since.
It was great, I hope AJ isn't sent to the Moon, I left quite a mess up there last time. So we're all happy, I got my pony, Dash got her cider, and Shsdowbolts still rule
The pony with the hammer-and-lightning cutie mark has been named Mjölna and already has her own question Tumblr. http://ask-mjolna.tumblr.com
ReplyDeleteOh! Also for anyone who thinks Applejack was basically saying she didn't learn a thing, I think she was talking more about business b/c she knew what the right thing was to do for her business from the beginning. She still included, however, a friendship report. I found that part funny xD
ReplyDeleteAnd I've still got my bits for these names for either of them:
Favorites: Thorla; Kami Cazi
Then:
Riley Rench
Hammer Time (lol)
Pix Fix
I dunno. Just throwing some names out there *shrug* I know the fandom will probably come up with something better xD
I second a few notions! These were, as a pair, the two best episodes yet. I luve'd this one too, for the song and the ending.
ReplyDelete@Snow Adore
ReplyDeleteShe was actually in it quite a bit, if you look to the left of the screenshot of Lyra in this post you'll see her at the front of the group. :)
So what's it like being an Earth Pony characterized by Thunder & Lightning? She's either a fish out of water or freaking Thor.
ReplyDeleteI liked the faces from some background ponies as well. That jumping Lyra had me chuckling. And Dash was jumping and flying about behind the crowd while the song was going on as well.
ReplyDeleteI liked this episode. It was better then I was anticipating. Even if there was technically only two actual scenery changes throughout the whole thing.
Also the purple unicorn mare I now claim with the shamrock cutie mark is Clover.
ReplyDeleteOr Clove
a pony with thor's hammer as a cutie mark i wornder what her name should be....
ReplyDeleteeeeyupp theres a mare with the hourglass in the right side at 6:13 and theres a colt with the same cutie mark a 2:28 but it changes in his next appearance. A copypaste derp I presume?
ReplyDeleteMy guess - a cent is a hundredth of a bit, in the same way one U.S. cent is a hundredth of a dollar. Currency just hasn't been mentioned much before, so we haven't got that sense yet.
ReplyDeleteI second Thorla!
ReplyDeleteDAYUM both new bg ponies have tumblrs already *whistles*
ReplyDelete@smokeydops2
ReplyDeleteNOPE WORST EP EVAR, SORRY
Let's argue about it all day!
@L9OBL
ReplyDeleteWhoops I ment left side for the mare lol
@AJBUB it looks like it! I like thor...
ReplyDeleteI thought that was also Berry Punch that the Flam Bros were teasing when singing about "dry throats".
ReplyDeleteBrownish BG pony in the center has a hammer with lightning as a cutie mark... Should we call her Thursday? It was derived from "Thor's Day"...
ReplyDeleteI like the names
ReplyDeleteClover and Riley Wrench
Though I still vote for my Thorra (it just seems more fitting to me)
Oh... And also I really liked Applejack's character development-carry over in the episode. Allot of people complain that the conflict in an episode erases the character development from the end of another. Not so in this case!
ReplyDelete@Ink
ReplyDelete>Hammer Time (lol)
Stop.
Now make that muthafucka HAMMER TIME!
oh oh oh OH OH OH OH
This episode followup pretty much got everything.
ReplyDeleteI loved the letter to Clestia. Best one yet. But I do believe there is a lesson to be learned here.
ReplyDeleteAt least for Apple Bloom and Granny Smith.
"Don't Let Your Mouth Write A Check
That Your Ass Can't Cash"
!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePony with Hammer and Lightning cutie mark, I shall call her "Thursday."
It also appears as though we have an Engineer pony. I'll just call her Wrench.
Yeah, thankfully AppleJack finally got a good episode.
ReplyDeleteBoater Hats
Ragtime
AppleJack
These are a few of my favorite things~
Also, who's the singer for Flam, or, rather, the one with the moustache?
@aa145c7e-304e-11e1-aa42-000bcdcb471e
ReplyDeleteI officially co-sign "Thursday". Let's be a lil more creative with our Fanon names.
@Mike
ReplyDeleteOhwait!
I forgot: Caramel had some lines. that was cool.
I'm afraid this has entered my list as the only episode I liked less than Feeling Pinkie keen. Something just felt off at almost every stage. Good references though, and some genuinely good spots, but overall just not much fun.
ReplyDeleteI should also point out that my first impression may be scarred by the fact that over this side of the pond, non-alcoholic cider doesn't exist. Of course I *knew* that would be a localisation difference, but it still made it really creepy to watch.
And again Lyra and Bonbon are next to each other several times throughout the episode.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this was pointed out yet, but pretty sure Flam has he mustache.
ReplyDeleteRelated note: You guys see the shot of Rarity in during the song? Spike was right. Gotta be the mustache.
@CrimsonStorm
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty much my headcanon too.
@eaglehooves
ReplyDeleteThere would in fact be 100 cents to a bit, since "cent" means 100. That's also where "percent" comes from: "X per one-hundred"
It makes sense to have things based in 10s if their numbers are the same, but they also use english units (feet, etc) so /shrug.
Pony with the Hammer Cutie Mark should be named after Thor Girl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_Girl
ReplyDeleteA "bit" is very old slang for a silver quarter. Further back (Colonial era) Bits were slang for a piece of eight, or 1/8 of a doubloon or pound sterling. In England "Bit" referred to a threpny, a coin worth two shillings. Only in the dutch east indies was "Bit" synonymous with "Cent" it was a mark worth three percent of a franc. Bit since these are coins, we can assume an Equestrian "Bit" is made up of 25 "Cents"
ReplyDeleteYeah, Mjölnir sounds right for the one with the hammer cutie mark.
ReplyDelete@Chetoos
ReplyDeleteThe music was a reference to this: http://youtu.be/LI_Oe-jtgdI
Which, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest musical comedies of all time. ALL TIME.
An awesome episode indeed. A lot of great Rainbow and Pinkie/Dash moments, a 4 minute song, an awesome letter.. The only season 2 episode I like more is "Return of Harmony".
ReplyDeleteFlim and Flam look like Jib and Jab.
ReplyDeleteOk first of all pony names
ReplyDeleteBrown unicorn_ wrenchy
Gray earth pony_ hamer down
Pink unicorn_ pink blosom
Second the song kinda reminds me of the manorail song in the simpsons.
Silly Seth, he's flim and he's flam, duh
ReplyDeleteAs for the new background ponies how about Clover, Thursday, and Fixie
If you pay close attention to the song, they say "he's Flim" "he's Flam" indicating the one with the mustache as Flam and the one without as Flim.
ReplyDeleteAs I commented on the other thread, "F*&#ING MUSIC MAN PONIES!!!"
ReplyDeleteOf course everypony's commenting on the Simpsons' monorail bit, because it's based of the same musical, but some of the inferences I've seen...
"Be our guest?" Really?
Anyway, everypony should look The Music Man up. It's the most fun anypony can have about anything involving the state of Iowa.
Ok first of all pony names
ReplyDeleteBrown unicorn_ wrenchy
Gray earth pony_ hamer down
Pink unicorn_ pink blosom
Second the song kinda reminds me of the manorail song in the simpsons.

Hey, what the heck was with one of the Flim Flams kissing Apple Bloom on the head? I mean, they're total strangers at that point. A little creepy, don't you think? Or am I reading too deeply into our favorite show again?
ReplyDeleteAside from that, it was a pretty solid episode. I kinda figured they would go for the quality vs quantity angle, but I've already given my thoughts on that. I loved AJ's letter to the princess. We needed at least one "I didn't learn nothin'!" letter during the show's run. That was a funny little way to end the episode.
Its good to see those BG ponies getting more attention but they're not really as new as most would think, they've been around since season one.
ReplyDeleteLyra actually showed up three times. First one's the funniest, it seems like she's just desperate to get on camera.
ReplyDeletehttp://i.imgur.com/yXm5u.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/CxKLf.jpg
gotta love happy grinning Lyra :) And somehow I don't think its a coincidence that she is next to Bonbon that often, are there still people who believe this shipping (or at the very least friendshipping) isn't canon?
ReplyDeleteI've become somewhat attached to those new background ponies. I've decided to call them Thunder Strike and Ratchet. I'm hoping they start to gain some notoriety among the fan-base.
ReplyDeleteMany D'aww's and laughs were had from the episode, the letter especially. In tandem with the background music it made me smile.
ReplyDeleteEven if I had disliked it (which I didn't, I really liked it) the song would have redeemed it with its pure catchiness.
Nice to see more of the background ponies we like put togther and more excitable Lyra.
I also now think Granny smith and Marty McFly would be friends.
Quote:
ReplyDeleteI'm being picky, sorry. It's cause I love this show.
Endquote
Best to save that for Star Trek Voyager's technobabble. It's MLP, the SSCS6K is only subject to the same rules of physics that (try to) limit Pinkie Pie.
I really liked AJ's development, especially how she accepted help from her friends, unlike in Applebuck Season. Personally, I would have written her final line as "but I learned that lesson last year already", rather than "truth is, I knew that already too".
pretty much betting they meant with cent a part of a bit.
ReplyDeleteabout the machine i just explained to myself that it has atleast 3 conveyor belts on quality control dutie in the background of the first one.
also am i the only one thinking we got Tor ponified in the new background ponies.
Excited jumping lyra for best pony
ReplyDelete@L9OBL
ReplyDeleteThe mare is Colgate.
A good name for the middle background pony would be Thor (because of the hammer and the lightning)
ReplyDeleteThe song reminded me of the Monorail song from that Simpson's episode.
ReplyDeleteIs there a chance the track could bend?
Not on your life my Hindu friend!
We need a Fluttershy episode...
ReplyDeletebadly ;-;
@DR_SHRUBBERY
ReplyDeleteA say if we going to call her that then use the Scandinavian spelling Mjölner.
Okay, obviously a bit is like a dollar and a cent is like... a cent. The ratio might not be exactly the same, but still. So it's fine that they used them both. You'll notice they went from "Two mugs for one cent" to "A barrel for a bit". That's how buying in bulk works.
ReplyDeleteMy new favorite gif: jumping Lyra!
ReplyDeletehttp://i.imgur.com/3Ulnw.gif
I forgot the pony with the hammar sould be Mist
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mist_(valkyrie)
A meh ep for me. I had the feeling I'd dislike the Flim Flam brothers but at least it wasn't as bad as the monorail guy (I really just dislike characters like that). Faces in this ep were hilarious.
ReplyDeleteYep, the best letter of all the episodes. What thought Celestia of it?
ReplyDeleteyou know, thora is a girl's name, though somewhat out of fashion. OTOH of course, they don't generally have human names but something more descriptive.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big annoyed by everyone's apparent misunderstanding of what "character development" means.
ReplyDeleteCharacter development implies a character arc. As in, the character is different at the end than they were at the beginning.
Applebuck Season had character development because there was an arc. At the end, AJ learns to trust in her friends to help her out.
Look Before You Sleep had character development because there was an arc. At the end, AJ learns to accept other ways of getting work done, because other viewpoints can be valid, too--the most direct approach isn't always the best.
Fall Weather Friends had character development because there was an arc. At the end, AJ learns not to compromise her standards for the sake of winning.
The Last Roundup had character development because there was an arc. At the end, AJ learns not to be ashamed of falling short of perfection, because she doesn't have to be perfect to those who love her to be accepted.
Apple Squeezy did NOT have character development because there was NOT AN ARC! AJ had the right idea from the beginning and she was the same character at the end as she was to begin with. She didn't learn anything new.
Don't get me wrong; it was great seeing her win, but DO NOT MISTAKE it for "character development," because it was NOT. Except possibly in the sense that she demonstrated the changes she had made since we first met her in Season 1. But there was no self-contained character arc here; Applejack was the same pony at the beginning of the episode as at the end of it.
my first thoughts for the middle one were thor or hepheastus... not sure what that says about me, though i take it as conclusive evidence that i need to get out more... unfortunately their both mares and hepheastus is most definitely not a pony name.
ReplyDeleteReally fun episode and I just loved flim and flam
ReplyDeleteand their song oh that song was so cool and it was good to see dash it was really fun
good episode
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteImmediately after seeing Granny Smith's reaction to being called a chicken, I thought "did she learn nothing from Back to the Future?"
I like Mjolna and Quickfix.
ReplyDeleteDr. Whooves = Next Fanon Canon? I hope we hear whim speak with a David Tennent or Matt Smith accent!
ReplyDeleteClover Flower, Thor, and Engie.
ReplyDeleteAlternate title:
ReplyDelete"The Cider Has Rules"
I'm too lazy to find out who said it, but Valkyrie seems like a good name for the thunder and lightning pony. The other should be named Letty. But maybe because I'm a fan of fast and the furious.
ReplyDeleteI missed that Lyra. Sure that wasn't photoshopped?
ReplyDelete3 ponies:
ReplyDelete1. Clover? Shamrock?
2. Thor
3. Engineer
The names might as well be blunt!
The Thor Hammer pony and the Wrench pony were probably more interested in their machine than the cider. At least, I like to think so now.
ReplyDeleteI'll let others come up with names for them, I absolutely suck at pony naming.
And Dr.Whooves, awwwwww yeeeaaaah no way was that a coincidence.
The filly with the wrench - Fixit
ReplyDeleteClearly the hammer chick is Thorina XD I like the name Quick Fix, its a very ponylike name
ReplyDeleteAlso, wouldnt it be silly if Dr. Whoove's cutie mark simply stands for the ability to turn hourglasses? something really silly and mundane? XD
and i think the reason 'cent' and 'bit' were used in the same scene was intentional. something to give us a better idea of the currency system in equestria. perhaps 'bit' is more alike to a dollar.
ReplyDeleteThat new pony on the left is 'Thora', and the other is 'Fix It' or 'Monkey Wrench'.
ReplyDeleteI dub them Mjolnira and Bolts!
ReplyDelete1. Purple Clover
ReplyDelete2. Thor
3. Wrench socket.
@Cybearg
ReplyDeleteAhem, character development is defined over a narrative, if that narrative spans multiple episodes, so be it.
AJ developed from the beginning of Applebuck Season, at first she was stubborn and refused help, they then developed that into her learning to accept help, showing her accepting it after huge amounts of pressure, now they have completed the development as she is able to accept it straight away. She may have learned the lesson during the events of Applebuck Season, but the actual character development happens only when the audience can see her characteristics, and hence doesn't have to be limited to the same episode.
There's a THOR mare. What's her name, everyone? XD
ReplyDeleteValkyrie for the hammer pony cause Thor is a boy name!
ReplyDeleteLady Sif?
ReplyDeleteI like the name Gadget for the pony with the wrench cutie mark. It seems to be similar to the wrench used by Gadget from Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers.
ReplyDelete@Cybearg
ReplyDeleteReread your own last paragraph and you should see why, yes, this is a fantastic example of character development.
I mentioned this yesterday on my Tumblr, but I'll briefly mention it here. It was a pretty good episode, but because Applejack didn't really learn anything new, there wasn't much in terms of change for her. If anything, this just goes to show how stable Applejack is compared to the rest of the mane six. Compared to the last two, this episode is very light in terms of super memorable episodes, but it was still a lot of fun and that letter was a hilarious twist.
ReplyDeleteThursday sounds like a great name for the pony with the hammer cutie mark.
I just realized I was the first to call the purple one Clover....
ReplyDeleteHELL YEAH I NAMED A CHARACTER FOR THE FANDOM MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE!!!!!!!!!!
Cent is smaller than a Bit. Hence why after "two cups for a cent?" they offered "two bits for a barrel?"
ReplyDeleteDespite the bits costing more, it's still a cheaper deal, as you get an entire barrel. We can assume it's much cheaper to spend two bits on a barrel than it is to buy a barrel's worth in single cups at two for a cent each.

The time will come when we see Dr. Whooves entering a Tardis...maybe not this season...maybe not next season...but someday.
ReplyDeleteIn next week's episode...blue phone box spotted and the bronies rejoice lol.
I'm thinking a bit is equivalent to a dollar, while a cent is equivalent to...well, a cent.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED THIS EPISODE! I laughed or sang along to about 98 percent of this. Just when I thought I could breath again, Rainbow Dash is eating dirt or drooling at the mouth haha.
ReplyDeleteThe song was really good and extremely catchy, like most songs that are on the show.
I felt that Applejack and her family got a huge spotlight on how their family works and how passionate and prideful they are of what they do.
I'm really impressed with the recent episodes, like, ya know, the last (all of them)
I also learned that Pinkie Pie has the power to ALWAYS win
Once more, since a lot of people probably haven't seen it: Mjolna for the Thor-pony.
ReplyDeletehttp://ask-mjolna.tumblr.com/
Being the first to create an "ask-xy" blog is a pretty nice way to claim naming rights, I approve!
@CybeargI think that last bit is what everypony's getting at. If AJ had a character arc in Applebuck Season and then the next episode was back to trying to do everything herself, that's not really character development. This episode didn't develop AJ in and of itself, but it demonstrated that previous character development has stuck instead of being a throwaway moral.
ReplyDeleteTangentially, I support Thursday as the name for the hammer and bolt pony, as it reminds me of Mathnet.
This one was so much fun...
ReplyDeleteGlad to see the show returning to form.
So, excited lyra was in there twice? I missed this one.
ReplyDeleteI think what most astounds me about this show is how every single episode, even if it's one of the weaker ones (which this one most certainly wasn't, but still) still manages to offer something excellent - some cultural reference or funny expression or joke...but always something to keep things fresh.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or is that middle background pony's cutie mark a hammer being struck by thunder?
ReplyDelete... Thor? What are you doing here, why are you a pony, and why are you a girl?
Light Brown BG pony: Mjolnir
ReplyDeleteBrown BG pony: Tinker
also, we saw the complete cider making process, from picking to drinking. It *is* basically pressed apple juice. Only americans would call that cider. ;-)
ReplyDelete*However*... equines have a digestive system that works by fermentation. So it'll turn into cider... later. :-D
@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteI was also somewhat disturbed by the leg wobble. I don't think pony legs can bend that way...
@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteYeah, we Yanks know the stuff they were making as "apple cider". I'm glad they weren't making "hard cider" which is what we call the alcoholic variant.
Yea this was one of my favorite episodes this season. The Flim Flam Bros. made great antagonists and the SSCS6K was pretty cool and created some great cannon steampunk tech
ReplyDeletethe leg-bending in the dance makes a bit more sense in the shots of them seen from the side. they are basically bending their elbow joints. but it wouldn't show on a full-frontal view, so some license was used, to show them bending their elbows outwards, as in fact humans might in a dance of that style. Real horse legs don't bend that way, i don't think their shoulders have that range of motion, but it's long-established that Pony shoulders do.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThere were a lot more awesome faces than just Dash's.
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely bacon.
Maybe there was another conveyor belt going on the other side?
I didn't pay attention to them using "bit" and "cent" in the same scene, but if they were, one was probably used during the song? For making the song flow better they probably had to switch.
And yes, best friendship report ever.
@Yellow 13
ReplyDeleteMake that three times. I saw another instance of it.
SSCS6K Actually comes from The Music Man:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI_Oe-jtgdI
Some lines also come from 76 Trombones.
Did anybody else noticed they called The Kingdom of Canterlot, now I am terribly confused as of Equestria geography...
ReplyDeleteThe middle one of the new background ponies. With the hammer and lightning.
ReplyDeleteIf said pony is a colt, he is Thor
If pony is a mare, she is Sif
I may well be the only person who didn't enjoy the song (It's the first time I've actually wanted to skip ahead in an episode). I enjoyed the rest of the episode of course, had some great jokes, and of course RD's hilarious facial expressions. But there was just something about that song that annoyed me that I can't quite place my finger on.
ReplyDeleteLetty for name of wrench pony?
ReplyDeleteJust think of it, it opens the door for a Fast and the Furious crossover fics.
I want to see more of Moot the 4-Chan pony.
ReplyDeleteShamrock, Valkyrie, and Gizmo.
ReplyDeleteAs for a name for the new lightning hammer cutie mark pony. How bout Crusher? It's the meaning of the name of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
ReplyDeleteOMG! In the new Family Guy, Stewey says "20% Cooler!!"
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my new favorite episodes, but somehow the the Flim Flam song didn't click with me. I didn't think it was all that catchy, I guess. Even worse, it went on for almost 5 minutes, if not more. Too bad I couldn't enjoy it. I'm glad others enjoyed it, though.
ReplyDeleteFor out Hammer pony, I like the name Thursday, but @Acriaos points out that a name has already existed for almost 24 hours. Remember, Mjolnir is pronounced something like "Myolneer."
I'm certainly not the only one who was thinking of Spongebob during this episode. Boy, if I had the artistic talent, I'd draw the Flim Flam brothers doing this scene with the Apple Family's cider in a comic. Anyone is free to take this idea:

Rainbow Dash also provided lots of laughs from this episode. I rarely actually "laugh out loud" when watching, but the scene with Dash eating dirt had me going. I'm also surprised that no one pointed out the 5 or 6 Berry Punch ponies in the first "line" scene at around 2:36.
This episode also had my favorite letter. Once again, getting me to literally laugh out loud. The look on AJ's face when writing it seemed to pull the whole scene together.

ReplyDeleteThe hammer and lighting pony should be named Thor.
ReplyDeleteI like that Flam and Flam's cutie marks put together make up a whole apple.
ReplyDeleteThe hammer and wrench ponies have appeared before, and already had names, according to http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_ponies, just without cutie marks aand/or from behind.
ReplyDeleteAnyone notice that Flim has two mustaches? One for his mouth, and one for his horn.
ReplyDelete@Yellow 13
ReplyDeleteIf we couldn't see their faces or cutie marks until now, are we sure they're the same ponies?
There needs to be a post for naming the ponies...
ReplyDeleteWho Did The Voices For The Flim Flam Brothers?
ReplyDeleteOh, I should also mention. If you're going to look up the source, make sure to watch the original Music Man with Robert Preston (this is like MLP:FIM). Don't even bother with the 2003 Disney remake with Matthew Broderick (this is like MLP 3.5).
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, its THE MUSIC MAN. Not anything else. So, anyone interested in starting the "Buffalo Bill Ponies - Memebers of the School Board"? Because singing is just like sustained talking....
This episode made me laugh and i really enjoyed the chaos the Flim Flam brothers caused. I like Applejack and she finally got to shine a little.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention Lyra's super smile always makes me squee.
P.S. This is my first comment on this site ever ...
I hereby dub the three ponies, from left to right in that picture... Purple Petal, Mjolnir, and Gasket!
ReplyDelete@Cybearg
ReplyDeleteWell put, sir. However, I am not so inclined to believe Applejack expresses very much character development. Thought, at first, yes, I was not so inclined to believe that there was very much character development for Applejack in this episode-there was, however, some in the last.
In many other episodes, however, Applejack expresses very little character development. I'm led to believe in many of the episodes that she "knew it all along", she was just playing along (I remember in dialogue her saying it a few times, too). Especially with Rainbow.
She learns these things, yes, but she does not necessarily change in such a set way as a character. It would appear, to me, as though her character is openly reinforced, and development, if any, comes from other characters' learning. Take Fall Weather Friends, for example, I get the feeling that Applejack really didn't care about winning, she just played along to keep Rainbow entertained. That appears to make sense, as they are friends, and turning down a challenge can be a real bummer to who asked it.
/cl_showmeaning 1
Can explain many things, but, primarily means that AJ develops other characters more than her own.
In The Last Roundup, it can't be denied that Applejack learned. Still, however, it is more apparent that her friends saw how bad Applejack felt and went about the lesson as they did so as to impress what they now knew so that AJ could know, too.
Semantics, I guess. I could use more examples, but this is already a huge comment. Fire away!
i would name the middle pony Thor, but that would sound weird, so how 'bout Thundercraft? or Blitzcraft, or Lightningbash?
ReplyDelete@Woodencoyote
ReplyDeleteWell. the one in the middle matches up exactly with on from "The Show Stoppers", but in that episode she didn't have any mark.
The other is a little more open, because you never see her eyes, but the hair and coat match up.
How can you not mention the song? It was the best song in the show man!
ReplyDeleteAlso the pony with the wrench cutie mark, I shall call her penis... I mean Epona.
Oh my god, that video. Laughed so hard I got a little dizzy.
ReplyDeleteI miss Phil.
SEPIA TOCK IS NOW CANON
ReplyDeletePony THOR!!!
ReplyDelete@Yellow 13
ReplyDeleteBut they haven't really been anywhere before now, so I'm sure a name change is in order.
It's too bad they didn't point out the actual lesson in all this.
ReplyDeletethat lesson being..
You shouldn't be so prideful as to risk your entire farm on an argument because a couple idiots called your granny a chicken.
It rather links back to a "Back to the Future" reference in that.
The brothers risked absolutely nothing while the Apples risked losing everything.
And the brothers technically won. They didn't have to leave and I imagine if they had just stuck to giving out the bottom barrels (the ones made before they stopped quality control) then everything for them would have been just fine.
It's like winning the lottery and someone saying "yup, just have to pay 8% tax on that" and so you decide to just throw away the winning ticket rather than deal with it.
Also.. if they had just taken in some extra help from their friends in the first place then there would have been enough cider to go around and the whole freaking thing could have been avoided to begin with!
I suppose we can't expect kids shows to carry much real-world logic...
I loved this episode, and especially that Flim and Flam continued with their performance even when realising that nopony wanted their product and that they'd have to try elsewhere. The ensemble dancing was wonderful as well. And Lyra's on her way to becoming Best Background Pony.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the story is concerned, it bothers me a little that nothing has been solved. Technology can't be chased away forever, Granny Smith won't be around forever, and it's only a matter of time before the same situation comes around again. Next time the rivals might not leave, and the Apples have had only a temporary reprieve.
Lets not forget Bon Bon's new new voice XD
ReplyDeleteok i have got to ask,did NO ONE else catch the small back to the future reference?
ReplyDeleteGranny Smith was called a chicken and she freaked out, sounds like Marty to me
11:37 in, look at RD's face.
ReplyDeleteI really want to call the brown unicron with the wrench "Tinker." ^^
ReplyDelete" It might be the one I enjoyed the least out of Season 2, but that's like saying I didn't like one cake because the one I had before was served by a topless girl and this one is served by my high school teacher."
ReplyDeleteBest line I've ever read in an episode review. However, I think there was some justification for the crying scene, namely that everybody was afraid Applejack would no longer have a place to live or a means to feed her family. I expected Twilight to cry because she spent her whole childhood being a recluse, she's practically starved for emotions. Pinkie's scene was more funny this time around, while her crying in Baby Cakes honestly broke me. I've come to accept Rainbow Dash as a softy who tries to bury that part under a mask of toughness. I never expected Applejack to cry. Ever. Her filly story in Cutie Mark Chronicles I excused because she was young. But this scene was a mild surprise.

ReplyDeleteThis is the third time the writers have made direct allusions to musical theater. The Flim Flam Brothers song was from Music Man (specifically taking parts from Trouble and 76 Trombones). The Simpson's monorail song was also a reference to those songs.
ReplyDeleteFrom Art of the Dress, the song is a direct allusion to Stephen Sondheim's Putting it Together from Sunday in the Park with George. The Gala song is from Into the Woods, from the song of the same name.
I keep hearing the song compared to the monorail song, but I'm surprised how few people are bringing up the fact that it's a take-off on The Music Man (just like the Monorail Song). Very brilliantly done, I might add. The Music Man is one of my favorite classic movies, and MLP pulled off the singing conman bit just as well.
ReplyDeleteI suggest Spanner for the pony with the wrench (or spanner, depending on where you live). I mean, it's the same thing but it sounds a lot better as a name than 'Wrench.'
ReplyDeleteThis episode after watching it made me want to get some apple cider(That juice is delicious :D)no wonder rainbow wanted badly I don't blame her.Aj'S letter was priceless
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this episode! I'm watching it again for the fourth time today. So many great scenes and reactions. :D
ReplyDeleteFolks on Ponychan and Ponibooru have already settled on Mjölna (hammer cutie mark) and Quickfix (wrench cutie mark) for two new background ponies. :)
There are even two new "Ask" blogs!

@ElectricMayhem8416
ReplyDeleteAnother musical theatre reference: the music at the very start of Sisterhooves Social is from Sondheim's A Little Night Music.
Loved loved loved loved LOVED this episode. I laugh all the way through it. And that ending? Priceless! Applejack is SO cool and I think that this episode REALLY showed it. My only complaint would be that I think that the Apples should have limited their cider to one mug per customer until everypony had had one. Regardless, I think that THAT blame could easily fall on those toward the beginning of the line as well. The Apples themselves didn't even seem as though they ever really got any either until the end of the episode when there was more than enough to go around. Still, this was definitively one of my favorite episodes of season two, maybe even the entire series ^_^
ReplyDeleteAs for our two new back ground "mechanics?", I think I'm gonna let myself fall into the easy hole of Ratchet Wrencher and Jolty Clanka. A.K.A. Ratchet & Clanka
@Legion2190
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!
Been getting pretty sad seeing all this 'Monorail' stuff. Guys, the Flim Flam song was *not* based on the Monorail song. Both the Flim Flam song and the Monorail song were based on the Trouble song from The Music Man.
Maybe it's just me getting old but, it's always kinda sad seeing so many people thinking all popular culture comes from The Simpsons (or, more and more lately, Family Guy). I like those shows too but all of western culture did not come from them.
Also, all you wippersnappers, stay off my lawn!
Most of episode = funny
ReplyDeleteFlim Flam Bros. song = catchy and amusing
Rainbow Dash's faces = LOL
Letter to Celestia = BAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!! XDDD
Predictable ending, but a good episode overall.
Something someone in the comments of the episode pointed out got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, look at this: http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/jensens7/She_Knows.png (Time code: 16:03)
She knows... we exist.
Now, here's the interesting part: Take a look at this http://sirponylancelot.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4i1evk Compare them. You see that? Of course you do. The thing is, that GIF was released long before the episode...
:O
Well played, Studio B.
awesome the new pony to the left has thos hammer as a cutie mark :D
ReplyDeleteNo squishy face Rainbow Dash (the scene right after Flim & Flam arrive the second time)? That was a pretty amusing face too...
ReplyDeleteHammer and lightning pony surely is the HORSE god of thunder! (see what i did there?)
ReplyDeleteApplejack is the first to write a letter to Celestia saying she didn't learn anything since Red Sniper! Man they have guts!
