This is cool!!
ReplyDeletefirst!!!
ReplyDeleteLuna doesn't have more followers? Shame.
ReplyDeleteI must admit, since Lesson Zero Twilight has been raising up on the favourite pony list, but Scootaloo still holds her place firmly.
ReplyDeleteFS is only just behind TS, and I would attribute that difference to Lesson Zero, that episode has a huge effect. It was awesome, and more importantly, it was recent. FS hasn't had her own awesome ep in ages.
ReplyDeleteI think on a level playing field there would be no significant difference between the two
Rarity has been helped by her eps this season, but AJ still lags behind "Other" (not derpy/luna) and Luna, which is pretty bad, AJ isn't that bad. Hopefully her new eps coming soon will bring her back into favour.
Neat statistics. I find it a bit sad that Applejack ranks below "other" on the graph though.
ReplyDeleteI hope Dash wins a few, these charts are always interesting to me
ReplyDeleteno octavia on the list ;_;
ReplyDeleteBuck yah Twilight.
ReplyDeleteWe need more Applove. :(
ReplyDeleteLet's see how the AJ episode helps that.
We swear, before the rush of new bronies in the summer, Twilight and Dashie would have switched places.
ReplyDeleteIt may not be a true census since it doesn't include every individual in the population, but it's the best science we've got. I approve.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, this makes me feel better about my enlistment in the Apple Corps. It's like we're cooler because we know something other people don't know. I would like Applejack to enjoy more mainstream popularity, of course, but this is good for now, too.
ReplyDeleteYay Pinkie :3
ReplyDeleteIm a little disappointed the US makes for such a high % of bronies, makes you wonder whenever anyone's going to try and sell merchandise outside of it, those shipping fees, man...
ReplyDeleteDidn't expect Pinkie Pie to beat RD though, that's surprising.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSilly Sethisto that's not how you spell Derpy Diana Hooves or Great and Powereful Trixie for that matter.
ReplyDeleteI just got science'd. My heart still says Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteI blame the fact Fluttershy is only 2nd best due to the fact she's had the least episodes featuring her. Dragonshy,Stare Master, and Bird in the Hoof were the only three to really focus in on her. Green isn't your color was more about Rarity and Fluttershy, so I don't include that. Not to mention Fluttershy has yet to get an exclusive episodes in this season! Rarity has already had 2!(with Sweetie Belle in one) and Applebloom has had 2 as well! What daaaaa heeeell!
ReplyDeleteWoo, that turned out better than I thought it would :D
ReplyDeleteI wish Trixie and Rarity had scored a little higher though >.> <.< >.>
Derpy is behind Applejack this cannot be!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope people don't start the ridiculous remarks like:
ReplyDelete"Silly Bronies, that's not how you spell X"
or
"Twilight Sparkle? I think you mean to say X?"
OMFG no love for Applejack
ReplyDeletescrew you guys
fluttershy is best second EVERYWERE apparently
ReplyDeleteTwilight is indeed best pony.
ReplyDeleteWas there ever any doubt?
Poor Applejack :(
ReplyDeleteHey hey, US bronies.
ReplyDeleteCheck Appendix C for a breakdown of favorite pony by country.
The difference between Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy?
ONE VOTE.
@gillnavisingh
ReplyDeleteIt's a little late to be stopping me now unless you have a time machine and something that can disrupt a stable time loop.
The best 3 ponies are the top three. Whilst Fluttershy is clearly best pony, Twilight Sparkle is still epic enough to warrant being the top.
ReplyDeleteWas expecting rarity to be closer to rainbow and celestia and applejack need tons more love!
I'd love to know what the reason is that makes Twilight high on these polls.
ReplyDeleteAs for the others, I wonder who got listed in the others, but oh well.
I think the results based on sex are highly incorrect. I don't think CoderBrony took into consideration a lot of female fans are pre-gen initated and therefore likely to frequent non-FIM based/brony based MLP sites like MLParena and the Trading Post. There is absolutley no way only 14% or so fans of FIM are female.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, pretty good.
no NO NO TWILIGHT IS NOT THE BEST PONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
ReplyDeleteI would have expected Fluttershy to come out of top? Personally, I love Twilight second only to Applejack but I thought Fluttershy was more favoured amongst the bronies.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I could never be a statistician though.
ReplyDelete@Nightmare Moon
Of the mane 6, she's often depicted as the leader, not to mention many episodes feature her prominently more often then the others, plus she was the first pony we got introduced to, etc. So she's something of the shows unofficial main character. That might be why.
I never get the sense that Twilight is the most popular pony.
ReplyDelete@Nightmare Moon Twilight is the obvious choice for people who don't think too deeply into it. She's a great protagonist, likeable and funny.
ReplyDeleteI guess a large population of the people who go to these polls would "identify" with her personality more than any other.
Get Vinyl a slot. If Derpy can make it into the pole, then so can she!
ReplyDelete@Dataanti
ReplyDeleteI know right :(
The armies of the NLR far exceed that of the Celestian Empire.
ReplyDeletePuurrrfect.
They still spell Spitfire wrong :o
ReplyDeleteWOAH DIS BE AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteLot's of delicious stats. Omnomnom.
ReplyDeleteI hope that for the next study my comment about "cultural zones" will be taken into consideration. It seems that there was a lot of rumble about that ;) Would be nice to have such things divided into more detailed info for people outside USA. It's 40% of the fandom after all.
PL, CZE, SLV, SLO, HUN, CRO, SRB etc. could go into "slavic gourp" (I know that my brothers ain't technically Slavs), GER, FRA, SPA, POR, ITA, GBR etc. into "western europe group" and so on.
And correlations. YaY for correlations.
One last thing is the age groups. It must be the first study where I see such randomly chosen groups. Gotta read methodology to see if there is any good reason for them. Can't think of something like that tbh.
AppleJack is at the middle instead at the top? Oh darn. At least Pinkie Pie is at the top favorite.
ReplyDeleteWasn't this already posted a while ago, or is it just me? Anyways, it's no surprise Twi was the most popular. As has been said, she is (or at least was) the "main" mane character and she is somewhat easy to "identify" with.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Pinkie got so many votes! She's the best for me! :)
That many people REALLY like Fluttershy? Ugh. Even Applejack has more personality. Rarity and Twilight should have been near-tied. I can't believe Rarity was so far back.
ReplyDeleteI just don't get Fluttershy's appeal, she's the least demensional of the mane six. I mean I get she's all cute and moe and stuff and I like that but compared to characters like Twilight and Rarity she just doesn't stack up that well.
ReplyDeleteAlso while AJ is near the bottom of my list for the main six I don't get why people like a character who's only appeared in two episodes more than her, or why Derpy as awesome as she is got so many votes. Ah well I guess Fanon really effects peoples perception of things.
@Ryan
ReplyDeleteFluttershy's The Woobie. Of course allot of bronies like her.
dat sad widowed percentage of people :fluttercry:
ReplyDeleteRarity needs more love :(
ReplyDeleteRARITY IS BEST PONY.
I don't care what the stats say!
@Ryan
ReplyDeleteYeah I don't get why people don't like Rarity that much. She is the most developed character among the main six and on average her episodes are among the best.
I like Twilight more but looking at all the characters objectively Rarity IS the best character on the show.
I find the lack of applejack love... disturbing.
ReplyDelete@Jimperator
ReplyDeleteNo Fluttershy is moe, a Woobie is a character who has stuff go bad for them frequently and so you feel sorry for them. A lot of Luna's appeal before her episode came from this.
97% of bronies have never married? Damn, that's a high percent.
ReplyDeleteAbout Fluttershy getting no episodes recently; I think its because she is already so popular, even without a lot of focus on her, so, in Hasbro's eyes, they don't need to push her more to sell more of her toys.
In short, everypony should start supporting the CMC, so they stop fucking getting episodes.
@Mr Mailbox & Jimperator: Meh, Fluttershy still gets my vote for best, Luna and Nightmare are tied for my second favorite.
ReplyDelete@CommanderHurricane Well, the majority are either in highschool or college, so I think that's pretty reasonable.
ReplyDeleteThe thing isn't that Rarity is hated or anything (she's in my top 3 for crying out loud), but moreso the fact that the poll only asked us to pick our #1.
ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna lie; Fluttershy was the pony responsible for me getting into the show. She's gotten screwed over in terms of development though, so I understand the frustration at seeing her near the top.
@CommanderHurricane
ReplyDeleteWhy? Sisterhood Social and Family Apprication were among the best of the season.
@Mojo
ReplyDeleteI thought that was Iron Woobie? Whereas general Woobie was just a character you wanna hug the hell out of because they have a certain audience appeal in their behavior and how the world treats them?
But yeah, Moe probably works better.
i don't understand Flutterlove. yeah, she's a nice and cute character but she has next to no personality other than being shy.
ReplyDelete@wackypony
ReplyDeleteActually, that's why I like her, and besides, she's had her times when she wasn't so shy.
I like the graph for "Going Public". I have to say it makes me really happy to see how open we are about this fandom. We love ponies, screw prejudices :3
ReplyDeleteAt 41 I am an insignificant minority, I kinda figured that :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see these stats, although having talked with a lot of fellow bronies I am not surprised by some of these numbers (high education numbers) and was surprised by others (that many single bronies? I know quite a few that are married and have kids). So, awesome stats are awesome!
@Jimperator
ReplyDeleteNo the Iron Woobie is the character who doesn't really spend their time feeling sorry for themselves and keep pressing on despite all the crap that happens to them.
basically the Woobie but with less crying.
Well we all knew Twilight was best pony. Fluttershy just can't beat the adorkability of Twilight.
ReplyDeleteBut the pony that got me into this show, seeing as she was spammed on 4chan a good bit way back when, was Pinkie Pie and she is my number 2 behind Twilight.
The biggest non english speaking bronie community is from Germany, Buck Yeah!
ReplyDelete@wackypony
ReplyDeleteBecause her shyness is pulled off just right, It's seen as both her characters personality flaw, and her most endearing aspect. That would be my biggest explanation for "Flutterlove".
@wackypony To do with love of animals, random assertiveness, sticking up for friends, breaking expectations whenever possible in addition to the shyness. Plus generally everything in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92nPyj2Qdto
ReplyDelete@Mojo
ReplyDeleteOhh right, thanks. I really need to read up on some of these articles again.
However there are times when Fluttershy has stiffened her resolve and become assertive. So she does sometimes meet aspects of the trope.
Washington State is Best State, German is second best language.
ReplyDeleteThis is known. Now it has statistics behind it.
Also: Brazil, y u hate Fluttershy???
ReplyDeleteFluttershy came in second place! I'm pleased with this.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteExplain to me how applejack was lower than other?! I'M OUTRAGED.
ReplyDeletehow the fuck is Cheerilee so low?
ReplyDeleteI mean, she's the best Earth pony other than Pinkie!
So many statistics. Probably not going to have time to pour through all of them. And once again, Twilight takes the top, with Fluttershy close behind. They are both tied for my favorite, though Fluttershy tends to win out most of the time. And for those questioning Fluttershy's draw, a couple of people have already pointed it out. It's definitely a given that she's timid. But even so, she's managed to keep on going and tough it out in situations that she's clearly not comfortable with. And she's clearly capable of pulling off the unexpected. The events in 'Dragonshy' and 'Stare Master' definitely come to mind. And how can you not admire her dedication to taking care of animals. You would need crazy amounts of patience to pull that off, something that she clearly must have. She may not be as exciting as some of other characters, but that's why she's my favorite. She is who she is; nothing more and nothing less.
ReplyDeleteThis was incredible research. I gotta find these so called, "42" fans in my area. I thought I was alone here. I'm sure the fan base is much larger then this, I wasn't even aware of this Census.
ReplyDeleteEverything is better with science! It would be cool if it could be an official brony checkup with every brony making that same test... But that is something that will only exist in my dreams i guess =(
ReplyDeletePretty much how I pictured it save for the CMC order. I mean, I like Scoots best too, but I never realised she had that big of a following.
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting this together really good stuff.
ReplyDeleteY no Discord? :-(
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad that Twilight is the most popular when she's by far the pony most like myself. Then I get more sad because I'm thinking like a hipster :(
ReplyDeletewell, my top 3 favorites are in the top three spots so I can't really complain that much that the order is reversed.
ReplyDeleteThe State of the Herd report references "over nine thousand census submissions." I'm sure that wasn't intentional, but I tend to notice the number 9000 whenever it is mentioned. Thanks, Dragon Ball Z.
ReplyDeleteAside from that, it looks like a lot of work was put into this. I'll have to read it when I have time later on tonight.
I'm rather disappointed at Rarity's poor showing. I think she has the most potential for character development of all the cast, perhaps because she's superficially the most like what people expect MLP to be but in reality so much more.
ReplyDeleteBut Twilight's my second-favourite, so that's OK.
fancy mathematics/stats to quote applejack, while the research is neat the survey itself is by no means accurate, so I would assume mane 6 ponies be more or less equal if the sample size was larger and if it was surveyed across all brony community. The good/bad thing about this is now we have evidences to back up support that MLP community are somewhat highly educated, mostly male fandom, most never married (yet, although in a relationship vs. not in a relationship could be surveyed).
ReplyDeleteQuebec has the least amount of bronies in Canada?
ReplyDeleteForeveralone.jpeg
Wow that's a big file. I don't think I'm scientifically educated enough for this. I'll see how much I understand.
ReplyDeleteOh, no, this is simple. Yay!
Though the first half was all I found interesting.
Wait, where's the total population? It's probably somewhere but I'll just add up the numbers here and ... 9015! Ha, I thought he was just saying "Over 9000" at the beginning to make a meme reference. It really is just barely over 9 thousand.
Fun stuff.
ReplyDeleteNot much love for AJ, or Derpy either. What gives? AJ may not be best pony, but Derpy certainly is.
Everyone knows there are no girls on the internet :P
Top countries, very predictable.
I'm ashamed to say that I have not gone public yet, only the internet knows but none of my friends, family, or coworkers do.
The marital status one made me lol, but to be fair, considering most of us are between 18 - 23 it's not all that surprising. But the really interesting part is that bronies have a low rate of divorce (or it's too early in the marriage to tell :P )
Looked over all the stats. Rather interesting. For the most part, they are pretty much what I would have guessed anyway. It's weird how time changes statistics. Like some mentioned, those favorite pony charts would have looked a bit different before the huge influx over the summer. Dash would have been much much higher on the chart. Probably where Twilight or Fluttershy are on that one. She seems to be loosing ground. I'm glad to see my favorite of the mane six, Fluttershy, is still holding on so strong after all this time. Even back then Fluttershy was usually within the top two or three spots. Twilight really moved up as well. Back towards the beginning of the year and perhaps around Spring she was close to where Applejack is now. Twilight has made quite the dramatic comeback. Of course poor Applejack has always been really low on those charts. Usually last. :( Derpy seems a little lower than I'd expect.
ReplyDelete@Muthesquirrel
ReplyDeleteScootaloo is best pony.
Ok, that out of the way, I think part of it can be explained by looking at the breakdown of popularity by age. Scootaloo peaks among 15-17 year-olds (those starting to find their place in the world, like Scootaloo is doing) and then again among the 20-49 year-olds (the 80's and 90's generation). She really fits in well among this group because she does have a strong personality and is female without needing to fit a female stereotype. Many popular women of those generations also exhibited this same personality (see Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Louise Post).
The other two CMC don't really fit within this view, Sweetie Belle is more girly (popularity ends at 29 year-old) and Applebloom is pure country girl (not popular with either age extreme, but steady among the rest of the ages).
@doctorvalor
ReplyDeletewell you're right not enough quebec bronies!
from montreal with love
Cyberpony
In terms of best pony and their character, here's how I do it. I take their amount of awesome plus likability (similarity to myself is never considered) and divide by the amount of screen time they are given. I then multiply by .8 and the remaining .2 comes from what the fandom can do with what they are given. So naturally, because Derpy gets minimal screen time every episode (and next to no dialogue either) but she always has maximum awesomeness and likability (seriously, who can honestly say they DON'T like Derpy?) she is best pony.
ReplyDeleteThis also explains why I don't care for Twilight as much. Every pony does something awesome, for Twilight it's adorkablness, but that only goes so far, and the awesomeness doesn't spread over all her screen time.
For Fluttershy, she's just flat out normal adorable, and has given us things like *hnnng* "YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE ME!" followed by trolling Discord (Discord people, Discord!) and then of course that one comic somebody made of the situation where Fluttershy puts the moves on Discord and he surrenders.
I finally feel vindicated. Twilight is best pony.
ReplyDeletePretty interesting gave a lot of well interesting facts and percentages that I never have seen before I apploud thee sir census maker
ReplyDeleteI know Spike isn't a pony and isn't as big as the rest of the main cast, but dang, I didn't realize he'd be that far at the bottom. Sad, because I believe he's really developed a lot as a character, and has been a big hero this season. He is certainly an underrated character.
ReplyDeleteAs for the rest, I guess some folks were right. Twilight is the most popular. I expected Rainbow Dash to get the honor. I'm surprised how low Applejack ranked, too.
Darn language barriers! They're keeping us out of countries where English isn't the main language!
ReplyDeleteI'm BETTER THAN YOU CELESTIAAAAAA!!! I WIIINNNNNNN!!! I had to get that out of my system, and I woke up later than I need to, just imagine all the times on here are two hours ahead and you can start understanding my sleeping schedule. I do have to leave here early though to get work done.
ReplyDeleteTwilight Sparkle is best pony. It's been proven by Science! Poor AJ though... she's not even up with the rest of the Mane 6...
ReplyDelete@Mojo yep, that was my immediate reaction when I first started watching the show.
Twilight Sparkle: I'm Twilight Sparkle. What's your name?
Fluttershy: Um... I'm *mumbles*.
Me: OMG they have a moe pony! lololololol
Twilight IS Best Pony.
ReplyDeleteI think Rarity and Applejack should at least be closer to Dash and Pinkie. It's nice to see Rarity has more love now days tho, i have always had the impression not many people liked Rarity and that gave me a sad for she is a wonderful pony, now we just need to work on loving applejack more.
ReplyDeleteWhy is their so little love for Celestia our all loving, harmless prank playing princess (and i don't mean trollestia) she should be hoof to hoof with Luna up there, for sisterly love is best love. As for all the other ponies they also need more love. I firmly believe all pony are best pony except for Twilight Sparkle (she's special) but that's because she stole my hart and won't give it back, not that I'm complaining. :)
Not surprised. Twilight is best pony.
ReplyDeleteI feel really bad for AJ, though...
@Doctor Valor
ReplyDeleteWell, it depends if you look at the results per capita or in absolute terms. Yes, per capita we have the lowest rate of bronies in Canada, but in absolute terms we are the fourth province with the most bronies (46, so 6.94% of all canadian bronies).
Either way, even if the sample is representative of the brony population, it's relatively pointless to calculate per capita because the results would be skewed by scales that aren't all equals to begin with...(46 out of 8 millions for Quebec VS 38 out of 0.94m for Nova Scotia).
Still, we certainly don't have enough bronies up here!
From a brony in Montreal
Aw ya!!!!!! Go fluttershy!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I personally prefer Rainbow Dash, we British Bronies rated Luna higher than the others.
ReplyDeleteAwww! Why is AJ ratings so low!?
ReplyDeletePopularity does not mean nothing, AJ still the best pony for me.
ReplyDelete@Sentry Gun
ReplyDeleteI agree. Screw popularity. It shouldn't affect the way you feel about your favorite character. It's just numbers.
It's OK AJ... I'll stick by you to the very end.
ReplyDelete@lost01
ReplyDeleteI'm confused why you think per capita rankings would be skewed. It's exactly the opposite, raw population counts are skewed because areas with high population can appear to be more active than smaller ones, even if there are relatively few subjects relative to the population.
Let's say that Ponyville has 10 members of the Rainbow Dash fan club, while Canterlot has 200. If we just look at raw numbers, Canterlot appears to be much more in love with RD. But if Ponyville has an overall population of 200 ponies, and Canterlot has 100,000, the per capita rates are a very different story. Ponyville has 50 fans per 1,000 ponies, and Canterlot only has 2 fans per 1,000 ponies.
Per capita calculations are used precisely because they allow for relative examinations of some demographic among areas with diverse population densities.
You can argue til the longest day of 1,000 years arrives, but you can't change the facts. Based on the survey results (which may not represent reality on the ground), you have a much better chance that a random pony you encounter anywhere other than Quebec will be a brony.
I remain your faithful demographer,
Coder Brony
Braeburn, why does no-one love you? ; ~ ;
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThere are 8 other bronies in Japan? Where are you guys?
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for the non AJ love around here. The reasoning my brony comrades (Which I proudly converted!) have is that she is the most down-to-earth pony (ha) in the show, and that makes her boring. I personally love AJ because she can do amazing things with no magic or flying capabilities, or even Pinkie's ability to do whatever she pleases whenever she wants to. I mean, look at Applebuck season when she was revered as the most loved pony in Ponyville itself! That being said, I don't have a favorite pony, because I'd rather not put one above or below the others, but rather I love aspects of each and really hope they get more character enriching episodes like Rarity and Dash have gotten *cough* Fluttershy *cough* Applejack *cough* Is Twilight best pony? Possibly in certain events. Other ponies would easily beat her in other instances with the way they would act. Still a fun spreadsheet, I loved it!
ReplyDeleteOf course Applejack is options away from the main 6. ;-;
ReplyDeleteThe census certainly provides an interesting view of the fanbase. However, I for one am not going to let a collection of charts, graphs and tables change my perception of my favorites. The way I see it, a character's lack of popularity is not worth fussing over. If anything, it should only serve to reinforce a fan's love for the character! - Well, at least I'm going to put it that way.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit that I find the lack of love for Applejack and Rarity disturbing. Dash appears somewhat underappreciated too. But I've got my hipster glasses ready for that...
As for Twilight Sparkle dominating the charts... all right!
Applejack didn't even make it into the top 6, but the rest of the Mane 6 did? I feel very sorry for her.
ReplyDelete
