Jay Wright over at Fighting is Magic has released a huge explanation on how the much anticipated pony brawler is animated, starting from basic Flash pallets, all the way to the painstaking process of actually recoloring them. It's a lot more work than I thought, that's for sure!
They deserve some applause for this. Hit up the article here if you are interested in checking out the inner workings of the art side of the game!

MAKE IT STOP!!!
ReplyDeletethey always deserve credit.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteGotta have a look at this!
It's a really long read, but it's got lots of cool info about how they go about making the game. Makes you really appreciate all of the hard work Mane6 Dev does just to give us a great pony fighter.
ReplyDeleteWill check this out in a bit, can't wait for this game.
ReplyDelete>mfw anything Fighting is Magic related
ReplyDeletehttp://mlfw.info/f/831/
They deserve so much more than applause. It's just mind blowing what these guys are putting together. And if the preview they gave us at BroNYCon is any indication, this is gonna be epic times infinity.
ReplyDeleteRead this yesterday. :D
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that something that seemed so simple took such a long time...
@ScootaChicken
ReplyDeletego learn how to do basic animations in Flash. it takes a long to learn even the basics. had an entire 2+ weeks, about 15 hours of class time, in my web design class and we barely even scratched the surface.
*applause*
ReplyDeleteI saw this article yesterday and I loved reading it. It's a thorough and detailed explanation that is truly fascinating.
ReplyDeletePlus I find the larval stage Rarity picture amusing beyond belief because it's so easy to take out of context.
Wow, that´s some complicated work. I´ll pay when needed for their game. If it is free, i´ll donate as much as i had fun playing the game, so something between 5-20€.
ReplyDeleteGreat work those people are doing there. Other groups as well. There are many pony game projects going on.
I can´t wait for the Twilight as detective one~ <3
I always knew the guys over there were working hard, but damn!
ReplyDeleteThats some dedicated fandome right there.
ReplyDeleteWhew, long article is right. That's quite the doozy. Then again, a lot of work goes into game creation and design. Just imagine how pain-staking it is to create the larger 3D games. But I'm drifting off the subject, as usual. lol I'm glad we have such dedicated game developers in this community.
ReplyDeleteY U NO RELEASE ALPHA DEMO
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew how to do stuff like this.
ReplyDeleteOh good! An animation article! Love these sorts of things. =P
ReplyDelete*slow clap*
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that they can openly share artistic info with us, even though they've made everything else top fucking secret. Seriously, this is retarded, they're just feeding you useless info so that they can stay relevant and keep up the hype. It has been a long time since they've announced any real info regarding gameplay. If it's not directly related to gameplay, it's not worth reading.
ReplyDeleteThat was probably the most epic pony-related article I've ever seen, and it was on palette swapping in a fighting game of all things.
ReplyDeleteI love this fandom so much.
Rarity is best slug.
ReplyDelete@James Rye
ReplyDeleteYou can't donate, at all. 100% free. They will *not* take donations at all on it, as they've stated time and time again. I understand how ya feel though.
They sure are putting a lot of work behind this! Can't wait for this game...
ReplyDelete@Dr. Robotnik
ReplyDelete"If it's not directly related to gameplay, it's not worth reading"...In your opinion. I found it quite an interesting read, and it's good to know what sort of process they have to go through to get palette swaps.
BroNYCon was just two weeks ago. We got a ton of new gameplay stuff then. Plus they drop a jewel on Twitter every so often.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'd like to see more gameplay stuff, we're hardly in an info drought. And as a fighting game fan, the making of bits are also pretty cool.
I was reading about this yesterday and this game never ceases to find ways to further impress me.
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to this game.
This is going to be SO AWESOME!

ReplyDelete"Once you start to have ideas outside of the basic, you have to get really creative."
ReplyDeleteThat's, like, the best thing ever when using really high level environments like fighting game and RPG makers: you use things like how they weren't neccessarily supposed to be used.
@Canadian
ReplyDeleteOh, didn't notice that. Still, it's sad that artsy stuff gets better coverage than actual gameplay.
I saw the video, and fuck Pinkie. Combo whore characters are the worst thing you could put in a fighting game. There's no mix-up's, no strategy, no skill required, it's just combo's. That means that there are no counters or nothing you can specifically do to combat that character. They turn the game into a neutral, strategyless fight where the first person to get hit goes down (Marvel, basically). Nothing is added, a lot is taken away.
@Dr. Robotnik
ReplyDeleteWow, you seem to know a whole lot on the overall outcome of the game based on the Pre-Alpha footage. It does sound like Pinkie Pie will only ever use combos, breaking the game and making it require no skill. A pity there's no way they'll do something to ensure the game isn't devoid of skill or the "combos" require nothing more than mindless button mashing.
/sarcasm
@Morthgarrow
ReplyDeleteHonestly, after his first post, I'd just ignore him. I think he's mad that he can't beat the hedgehig and he's focusing on this game.
@Nightmare Moon
ReplyDeleteYeah, that hedgehig has really got me.
@Dr. Robotnik
ReplyDeleteHedgehog* So I made a typo. So, sue me.
@Nightmare Moon
ReplyDeleteI'll see you in court.
@Dr. Robotnik
ReplyDeleteWow, way to be a douche, dude.
You make typos too. Everyone makes typos. Trying to point them out to make the person you're arguing with look like an idiot only serves to make YOU look a completely ass.
Just calm your tits, brony.
You were wrong in making such a harsh judgment on a game that isn't even near finished yet.
Accept it.
Get over it.
At least Mane6 DOES give us some development info. If they wanted to, they could just keep EVERYTHING under wraps until final release.
Show a little gratitude bro. These guys have more than proved their capabilities.
On a note more related to the actual post:
ReplyDeleteAHMAGAH that was a cool article! Being able to delve that deep into their process was really cool!
Can't wait for more stuff like that!
Woah, that is so cool seeing all the work that was put into it! I can vouch that it's awesome since I was one of the two people who got to test it in front of the crowd at BroNYCon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLye-xmmgXk&context=C3e336ecADOEgsToPDskLfsarIIMQ-9gk6QiS3W3a4 This game is epic and will be so much fun for everyone to play.
ReplyDelete@Lemonite
ReplyDeleteThe typo thing was a joke, so was the follow up. Also, my problem isn't with the actual footage, it's with their intentions. And you're acting like quite the douche as well, bitching at me because of my opinions. What about love and tolerance? Or does that only apply to people who think the way you do?
@Lemonite
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. Ontop of that, it's going to be free. They're not even taking donations which actually surprises me.
rarity is fleur de lis and scootaloo.
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm not done yet reading but what I have read is entertaining. Read the article, and watch out for men in yellow raincoats!!!
ReplyDelete@Nightmare Moon Legally, they can't take donations. They cannot take any sort of compensation of any kind, because it would constitute as profiting off of intellectual property they don't have the rights to use commercially.
ReplyDelete@Dr. Robotnik If you looked at the footage of BroNYcon and some of their previous livestream events, and also read one of their older entries, you'd see what they're doing with combos: they degrade with each hit. Excessive comboing is worthless, so to continue you'd have to stop for a bit, leaving you wide open more than long enough for some real retribution. There IS strategy and skill required in effectively using a well-balanced combo character. Keyword is "well-balanced", which is something Mane6 is taking great pains to accomplish for all of the characters.
ReplyDelete@waffle911
ReplyDeleteAh, okay, that does make sense. Thanks for the info!

ReplyDeleteYeah, I know what damage scaling is. I love how everyone is so stupid that they can't even read. My problem with it not that she'll be overpowered, I never said that word. My problem with her is that she will be all combo's and nothing else, there will be no real way to play her, and characters like that add nothing to the game and take all the strategy out. Even if they are perfectly balanced (Ken), they add nothing. They are all substance.
