And then Granny Smith was a real character.
Welcome to the episode followup! This week we got a huge slap in the face made entirely of new canon for Ponyville and the Everfree forest. To some, that might have hurt! For the rest of us it was rather enjoyable. Come along for the ride, and we'll talk about all the neat stuff we saw.
And interesting thing to note here is that (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) this is one of the few instances where we've seen non-pony controlled weather. Since we learned that this came from the Everfree forest later on, it makes sense. Worth noting, though, that this weather did seem to follow the zap-apple trees out of the forest. Take notes, writers.
And then the pink one showed up again. And started talking. Oh well. At least it wasn't Silver Spoon. Or the bro-ponies.
This is the first time we see the new colt in Cheerilee's class. He's behind Diamond Tiara, and I don't believe he has a name yet. Who wants to name him? I vote for 'Chowder'.
Also apparently the CMC all go to the same school now.
RAINBOWS EVERYWHERE |
It's not the best map ever, but it does give some basic reference points, if you're interested.
Equestria Daily Top Tip: Granny Smith is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, the same voice actress who plays Rarity, Luna, and Nightmare Moon.
Apparently Celestia controls land rights within her kingdom. Or maybe she was just acting as a guide in this instance? Hard to tell, and probably nitpicking a little bit.
I laughed far harder than was necessary at this scene. |
Please tell me I'm not the only one who just noticed that the stem was a lightning bolt.
Now I feel silly.
And finally, Scootaloo explaining the finer points of how big it was while Applebloom takes a nap.
And now, some fun things from the community!
Unfortunately I don't believe there was a Derpy sighting in this episode! Let me know if I just totally missed her, though. There were a lot of ponies in those flashback sequences.
That's all for this followup. Take care, ponies!

Good job Derpy, you can time travel.
ReplyDeleteAppleBloom is a dictionary.
ReplyDeleteWhat? Nobody saw the Derpy in the episode? Lemme find the time of the episode.....
ReplyDeletePie
ReplyDelete6th?
ReplyDelete1st. and DAMN YOU ILLUMINAT!
ReplyDeleteWait i thought granny smiths hair was kinda blonde. Guess i was wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'd look for her in the jam line.
ReplyDeleteSo both Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom are dictionaries?
ReplyDeleteoh god, the conspiracy theorists are on their ways.
ReplyDeletejust when i thought i had lost them, here they come. D=
I really enjoyed this episode. But now I want to try a zap apple just to know what it tastes like.
ReplyDeletehopefully we get even more tidbits to feed the authors in the next few episodes! i fr one toguht it was particularly awesome (about 20% more awesome) to find out that granny smith was key to making ponyville happen.
ReplyDeleteStill wish I knew what zapapple jam tasted like... Hopefully it's not as crazy as that time when Pinkie tasted the rainbow.
ReplyDeleteI want to eat a zap apple.
ReplyDeleteThis episode made me laugh, Granny Smith almost moved into my top 6 ponies!
ReplyDelete@Scarbird
ReplyDeleteYes and their best friend is a chicken.
where bomb where?!?!?1
ReplyDeleteAm I a bad person for wanting to strangle a small animal every time I see Diamond Tiara now?
ReplyDeleteI looked for Derpy but never saw her.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, totally loved the episode.
Yes! Let's name him Chowder!
ReplyDelete*Gasp!* No Derpy?!
ReplyDeleteOh my god. I didn't even notice the illuminati symbol.
ReplyDeleteThey also put the symbol of the Bohemian grove on the cover of the book about owls in Owls Well.
What the fuck is going on here?
The stem is a lightning bolt?!?
ReplyDeleteNow that that's out there... no Derpy in this episode? I wasn't looking extremely hard, but couldn't see her as far as I could tell.
No cereal, you're not
ReplyDeleteI saw Derpy at 0:42
ReplyDeleteI would like to point out that Bon Bon is about the same age as Granny Smith. She is waiting in line for the first harvest of zapapple jam.
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud when Granny Smith's mother got mad at her husband's friendly gesture toward Princess Celestia. It's little things like that that make the show so enjoyable for us older fans.
ReplyDeleteYoung Granny Smith's design was one of Applejack's beta/alternate designs was it not?
ReplyDeleteRarity, Granny Smith, Luna, Mayor Mare, Nightmare Moon and Zecora. Tabitha St. Germain is so much pony awesomeness incarnate.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the biggest laugh for me was Great-Granny-Smith's face at her husband swooning over Celestia. Such a great touch to throw in... Kudos to whomever thought of it.
I had assumed the other CMC's had been in the same class since their big concert last year, followed by their field trip together in the opener and their Loopty-Hooping extended recess, but I guess this is the first time they've all been seen at desks (minus the recolored versions that pop up early in the first Apple Bloom episode.) We got the new foal, but I guess Pip doesn't go to their school. Not sure if Snips and Snails showed up or not.
Lots of fun details this episode...
All I think when I see that Scootaloo picture is "Watch out! Looks like we got a badass over here!"
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not the only one who noticed the new colt. Chowder sounds good to me.
ReplyDelete@BZKlint
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't count!
I vote for Gaben pony.
ReplyDeleteWait, they really stuck the EYE OF PROVIDENCE in the background of the sepia flashback?
ReplyDeleteDAMMIT, STUDIO B
Now one of those mouth-breathing, tin-foil hat, Bilderberg Group obsessed, probably anti-semitic, 9/11 Troofer conspiracy loons is gonna add that MLP scene to his crappy Youtube video about how THE ILLUMINATI is inserting subliminal messages into children's cartoons to secretly control NFL point spreads or something. You laugh, but it'll happen, and then I'll have to explain to some idiot on another forum WHY it's bullshit. And they'll respond by acting like I'M the dumb one grasping for strawing in the argument. SIGH
Also, Tiara's dad looks like Mitt Romney. Check the eyebrows.
No derpy makes me a sad pony :(
ReplyDeleteok I studyed the episode, I could not find a Derpy... But I sware I found a Time Traveling Bon Bon!
ReplyDeleteI guess pointing out Weekend at Bernie's was too obvious for this section?
ReplyDeleteI noticed two points in time where the animation bugged slightly, either one of those could be something. Basically someone needs to look for single frame misshaps.
ReplyDeleteOne of those times I swear something was flying in the very distant background.
I can also prove the lands of Equestria is related to Zelda.
Heart Containers, trinity of races, three cities that can be triangulated from the map and canned evil that pops out of a void. They have fairy lanterns in Canterlot, Rupees practically fall out of bushes and can be dug up if you have a shovel. The hub had a vote about the episode Cutie Mark Chronicles and one of the things about Dashes cutie mark was suspiciously Zelda toned.
Also rabbit ears in this episode? The same thing that boosts Links running speed anyone?
My conspiracy theory goes that they are trying to make a timeline as convoluted as Zelda's is given that Link is always his own grandpa.
Court Martial!
ReplyDeleteNo, name the new colt Russell after that kid from UP!
ReplyDelete:P
@Treebohr
ReplyDeleteHehehe...
At least technically it does.
Whenever I see her on the train in the opening sequence I just think about how awesome it is that Studio B decided to sneak her in there.
Either I was going for troll logic or insane troll logic. Also Canterlot Castle can vaguely seem like the one from Ocarina of time.
ReplyDeleteI was impressed at Silver Spoon this episode. She was the first to clap for Granny instead of waiting to see what Diamond Tiara would do. Go Silver Spoon, be your own pony. Also I agree with thinking her hair was a little bit blond back then but its hard to tell with the sepia.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually somewhat glad Derpy wasn't in this episode. Not because I don't want to see her (trust me, I do want to see her), it's just that it wouldn't be as exciting if she was in every last episode. It would start to get boring if they did that.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the Sweetie Belle expressions? Or the CMC in bunny ears?
ReplyDeleteI also feel this episode proved my thinking that Silver Spoon isn't THAT bad of a pony if not for Diamond Tiara being the negative influence. A little stuck up; yes.... but a total bitch; nah
This was definitely a good episode
I've sort of gotten attached to calling the new colt Truffle. I'm sure we'll give him a fine name, either way.
ReplyDeleteTwilight meeting a wise owl first seen in Stare Master watching the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
ReplyDeletePinkie tying balloons to her body like the most hated character of the series Tingle.
Pegasi can wear boots.
And you're not nit-picking, Cereal.
ReplyDeleteWE TOTALLY MUST FIGURE OUT THE INTRICACIES OF EQUESTRIAN PROPERTY LAW
Is Celestia a Socialist or does Equestria operate under Feudalism? LET ARGUE ABOUT IT
Anyone else notice the house with the giant carrot on top at 00:10?
ReplyDeleteThe Carrots place looks sweet!
WAIT!
ReplyDeleteIs this the first episode to not have a friendship report at the end? You know other then the pilot and season two starter.
I vote Chowder!
ReplyDeleteAnd he can work for a chef named Mung Dal and have a Big Mac look-a-like named Schnitzel and...
*cough*
the thing about Chowder characters is they have the right kinda names for this application.
Anyways, I vote Chowder.
I liked this episode. The writers seem intent on explaining more about the Ponyverse in season 2, which I really like. Season 1 was mostly about showing us the characters, and now that we have, we get to see the world they live in. It's really cool and fulfilling to see the rest of the world come to light, maybe see some more of the other pony cities later on? I can only hope, I suppose.
ReplyDelete@Spycam1243
ReplyDeleteI've noticed it several times. It's in most episodes with Sweet Apple Acres, I believe.
Found her! Derpy was 492nd in line for the zap apple jam at 21:59.
ReplyDeleteI was almost moved to tears at the end of Granny Smith's epic story!
ReplyDeleteI like Chowder! Chowder is a good name!
ReplyDeletePlus he looks a lot like a certain purple raccoon/cat/boy/thing that shares the name, and clearly likes food just like the other Chowder.
Should we make him an apprentice chef as well?
@Spitfire8a
ReplyDeleteThere was no friendship report for Hearthswarming Eve either.
@frederic
ReplyDeleteAlmost? I was moved to tears.
@Nine
ReplyDeleteDo the Truffle Shuffle?
@Everyone else because I just won't stop at this point, have I hit annoying yet? I'm working on meeting my supposedly evil quota early this year.
Also Celestia has three colors in her mane. Blue, Green and Red.
Colors of the three friendly goddesses of Hyrule!
Ganondorf is a shadow master and rides a 'shadow horse' like Nightmare Moon.
Discord created creatures with long legs, they could have become Tektites!
Seriously though, make me stop.
I vote "Chunk" for the background pony after chunk from the Goonies.
ReplyDeleteDO THE TRUFFLE SHUFFLE!
@Harwick
ReplyDeleteTabitha does not do Mayor Mare. That would be Spike's voice actor.
No mention of the Timber wolves?
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one that likes these one shot creatures that appear??
@Harwick
ReplyDeleteAwww horseapples your right.
And i thought i was on to something too. lol
Chowder sounds good to me!
ReplyDeleteHow about "Pudgey" as a name for AB's classmate? Or "Pudge" for short?
ReplyDelete@Spitfire8a
ReplyDeleteAnd "Hearth's Warming Eve"
And of course Celestia and Luna have land rights, how else could I have gotten ownership of the Everfree Forest?
ReplyDelete@herpyderpy
ReplyDeleteIf that small animal isn't Diamond Tiara, yep.
i vote chowder too its a fitting name
ReplyDeletethere was a background pegasus similar in color to derpy in the scene where granny and apple bloom first arrive in town(behind dr. hooves, talking with another pony) she had different hair though, and while i couldnt make out the cutie mark it wasnt bubbles
ReplyDeleteThat's not necessarily the eye of providence that's a popular gipsy symbol.
ReplyDeleteDon't flip out. Christianity/Faith is not being attacked here. We should be worrying about the templars (AC FTW :P)
@bigwig
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Cathy Weseluck, I'd like to see another Junebug appearance in a speaking role.
@Sethisto: You misspelled Apple Bloom.
ReplyDelete@Lord Bloomberg
ReplyDeleteI swear I'm sorry I crossed wavelengths with by accident good sir. Hope I didn't accidentally cause you any of my constant insanity.
Please tell me I wasn't the only one who thought Filthy Rich looked like Peter Gallagher, like, immediately?
ReplyDelete... Just me? Oh.. alright..
Sweetie Belle was always in the same school as Applebloom, Scoots must of just enrolled
ReplyDeleteDoes anypony else realize we haven't had a friendship report in 2 episodes?
ReplyDeleteOh sorry, Cereal posted this one.
ReplyDeleteThat's not necessarily the eye of providence that's a popular gipsy symbol.
ReplyDeleteDon't flip out. Christianity/Faith is not being attacked here. We should be worrying about the templars (AC FTW :P)
Lol my friend thinks that MLP is an illumaniti plot to take over the internet and then the world. He doesn't even know that I'm a brony yet lol!
ReplyDeleteAlso....
@RDash lolyeah
1. Say what you will about Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. They are mighty effective villains. 2. Silver Spoon > Diamond Tiara, because she is slightly nicer. 3. That fat pony in the background really fraked me out. It was like he was staring at me whenever he was on screen. 4. I think this was the first time we saw Princess Celestia in a previous time period. It was weird to see her in the past looking exactly like she does now. I mean, we always knew she aged really slowly (or not at all), but it felt weird to see it in action.
ReplyDelete@Greenf0x
ReplyDeleteHopefully this means she has parents that have yet to appear. I'm actually in the process of writing a fanfic with the "Scootaloo is an orphan" premise, but I really want her to have parents in the show.
Oh, and Filthy Rich looks like Mitt Romney. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeletedidn't see Derpy, but im pretty sure I saw doctor hooves in the flashback :)
ReplyDeleteI found a paradox in the time line
ReplyDeleteIn the Winter Wrap Up episode, TS say that ponyville is about a hundred years old
I don't think granny smith is that old
Also Derpy was in the title sequence. Every title sequence of season two has featured her.
ReplyDeleteTook me a while to finally figure out what the zap apple remedied me of... they totally look like something out of an anime called Toriko I lold at the realization
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned and thought when watching this episode, in no particular order:
ReplyDelete1.) Old Apple logos on trees.
2.) Princess Celestia, is the ultimate threat of every married mare in Equestria.
3.) It is acceptable behavior to greet a princess with a kiss on her hooves.
4.) Timber wolves are made of actual timber.
5.) Granny Smith, actually has a very cool past.
6.) WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S!
7.) Diamond Tiara, is apparently an oddity in her family, considering how her father made their family rich.
8.) Zap Apples and Trees, bring about a whole bunch of new rules to the world of MLP:FIM.
9.) Rainbow Dash, is a liar or ignorance of zap apple jam, "Rainbows aren't know for their taste." Excuse me?
@bigwig
ReplyDeleteI stand corrected... thank you. It looks like she doesn't play Zecora either, according to IMDB. Huh... I should check my sources more carefully.
Ah well, they're all awesome ponies incarnate. And dragons.
as i was searching for derpy i noticed... and maybe somebody else noticed. that the animators got a tiny bit lazy when making the lines for the zap apple jam. the current ponyvill line is the old ponyville line, but with hats and bonnets removed. you can even see bon bon there... and then in the current ponyville line, the shaded out part in the background are all still wearing hats and bonnets, just thought that was interesting. the search continues.
ReplyDeleteAt least it wasn't Silver Spoon? Pffffffft, she's totally like... better than that Diamond Tiara. That pony was so last week, I mean gah.
ReplyDeleteThough I can't help but notice Cheerilee has sadistically put Applebloom between the two nefarious fillies.
@Cesar
ReplyDeleteI believe This image should explain why that happened.
Studio B just gave them hats.
@Altherix
ReplyDeleteHard to say how much of the family's success was due to Filthy Rich. Wasn't it his father, Stinking Rich who started the family business?
So Diamond Tiara might be the second generation to have inherited wealth.
zap-apples! they put a tingle down your spine!
ReplyDeleteNice episode! And yeh , count me in for chowder. Someone contact hub.... This MUST be made cannon.
ReplyDeleteAwesome episode. Had me laughing and was just too amazing. Zap Apples are a comin'!
ReplyDelete@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteI love the timber wolves myself, and I'm disappointed there's not been any fan art yet to really show them off.
Also, there was no friendship report for "The Show Stoppers" or "The Best Night Ever", in addition to the episodes already named. (There really wasn't one in "Sonic Rainboom" or "A Bird in the Hoof" either, though in those episodes a pony at least gave what amounted to a verbal friendship report to Celestia.)
I'm not entirely sure whether I should take Winter Wrap Up as canon or this episode, honestly.
ReplyDeleteLittle late, but I might as well give my take. Just seems like every episode gets better and better, and this one was no exception. Such a great story line, Granny Smith got plenty of screen time, a great backstory to the begining of Ponyville... Overall, such a good episode. Making it more special for me was that I saw this at BroNYCon. We laughed, we cheered, we booed, and the collective reaction when Apple Bloom chewed out Diamond Tiarra towards the end was just priceless.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I vote Chowder for the pudgy colt.
Somewhere out there, there's a fanfiction that totally called Granny Smith and one of the snob fillies Grandparents founding ponyville.
ReplyDeleteThe zap apples were a nice concept
ReplyDelete@Omega_code
ReplyDeleteWell, 50-80 years is "about 100". Twilight Sparkle isn't a mathematician, she's a librarian.
I prefer curmudgeonly Granny Smith (like from episodes 4 and 5) to "acts like something from a bad Monty Python sketch" Granny Smith. Watching ponies jump over water pails while reciting the alphabet was painful to watch. I get that that was kind of the point, but it still seemed really stupid to me.
ReplyDeleteBut I am a sucker for physical humor in the form of facial expressions. I got a good smile from Sweetie Belle's scheming face, Great-Granny Smith's jealous glare, and Daisy going from annoyed to beaming in an instant.
@Harwick Point taken, they may have all forgotten their roots.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Cereal though, I laughed far harder then I should have at the jealous wife of Celestia scene.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for this episode at all?
ReplyDeletethe closest thing we're getting to a Derpy is probably one of her ancestors with a vague resemblance in the flash back or the cop-out which is the appearance in the opening
ReplyDeleteForgot to show the Timber Wolves. Those things were great, I mean, they're layered with puns. Timber being a reference to the wood they're made from and their "bark" is worse then their bite!
ReplyDelete*shot*
Also RD's favorite fruit should be Zap apples for their shared similarities.
We even got to see a new character, Mr. Filthy- er, Mr. Rich...
ReplyDeleteScootaloo lit a lamp with her head... Link had a lamp as his first item.
ReplyDeleteSo...Rainbow Dash is a product of her mother eating bushels of zap apples during pregnancy?
ReplyDeleteSomething else I am not sure has been pointed out:
ReplyDeleteSince Granny mentions the "Smith Family", Smith is confirmed as her LAST name - meaning she is canonically AJ, Mac and Bloom's MOTHER'S mother, if marriage and naming conventions more or less follow Human social mores.
So there was a Granny Apple on the other side of the family at some point, too - maybe she's living wherever the Apple parents are...if they're alive.
@Omega_code, @TenchiFreak5
ReplyDeleteIf you must reconcile the Ponyville origin in this episode with Twilight's statement in "Winter Wrap Up", probably the simplest thing to do is assume Twilight mis-spoke, and meant to say that Ponyville was founded by earth ponies, and earth ponies had been doing Winter Wrap Up without magic for hundreds of years.
@TGearFur
Nope; this seems to be one of the better-received episodes of season 2, but there are several bronies less-than-happy with it. Every episode, no matter how popular, has its detractors; and every episode, no matter how unpopular, has its fans.
@Altherix
rainbow-colored zap apples ≠ rainbows
@TGearFur
ReplyDeleteI didn't hate the episode, but I did think it wasn't up to snuff with earlier episodes.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Keeper308
ReplyDeleteRight on! We have to keep an eye out for Abstergo!
(and AC FTW indeed!)
Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon acutally look rather cute in the third and ninth screencaps :D.
ReplyDelete@Jimperator
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking Rainbow Dash's parents ate way too much zap apple jam while frolicking in the rainbow hot-springs for far too long on their honeymoon...
considering zap-apples have alot to do with rainbows, i would except them to have a bit of a kick to them considering pinkie's experience with tasting the rainbow. mmmmmmm... spicy apples... *DROOLS*
ReplyDelete9:33 sweetie belle bedroom eyes omg
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkWRHGGABQY&hd=1#t=9m33s
@DrOblivian
ReplyDeletethey would also probably leave slight numby tingling feeling afterward like having your tongue electrocuted, but pleasantly, not painful.
I REALLY WANT ONE OF THESE APPLES NOW!!!! damn you my imagination, DAMN YOU!!!
I loved this episode. I never thought i would get a granny smith episode.
ReplyDeleteI thought of the old Apple logos too :)
ReplyDelete>GET YE FLASK
You can't get ye flask!
But yes, the scenes with Granny Smith were just painful to watch, as are all the scenes with old ponies for reasons I don't understand myself. The episode was pretty cool though. Origins, man. So cool.
Regarding Granny Smith's age, isn't it obvious, she's immortal!
ReplyDeleteAlso while Chowder is a good name, I'd like to make the suggestion of Chubby Wubby or Num-Nums
@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteBy definition, Celestia is the tyrannical ruler of Equestria because she has absolute power over everything and everypony. She doesn't really seem to mind everypony doing what they want, but the power is there.
Loved the names they're using, loled when they introduced Filthy Rich, then again with Stinking Rich.
ReplyDeleteTimberwolves gave me a good chuckle too, and did I mention how awesome zap apples are?
Solid episode all round, much better than I was expecting.
I'm automatically biased against this episode just because Granny Smith's voice makes me want to end it all. This would be a beautiful death. Jumping out the windoooooooooooow.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnybody ever wonder if Mayor is really only in her 30s and white is just the color of her hair like young Granny Smith?
ReplyDeleteAbout property ownership in Equestria - perhaps the arrangement is similar to the system used in that other magical, colorful fantasyland, Oz. In one of the Oz books, it is stated (paraphrased): "All property belonged to the Ruler (Ozma). The people were her children, and she cared for them." (BTW, it was developments like this that made the Oz books very controversial during the 1950's - some folks believed that the above description meant that Oz is a Communist country, even though author L. Frank Baum had inserted a disclaimer: "Dorothy tells me that this arrangement works splendidly for the Oz people, although I don't suppose it would work for us.") So maybe Celestia, as Ruler, owns all land in Equestria, but she parcels select acres out for development to those subjects she deems worthy. It does seem a good way to keep Equestria free of overdevelopment and pollution. Just a thought...
ReplyDeleteASDSFDHGHFFGFDSA U GUYS ARE CALLING HIM CHOWDER?
ReplyDeleteQ U Q
I SUGGESTED THAT
TT U TT
The chubby pony's cutiemark is knives... INB4 Grimdark.
ReplyDelete@Doctor Façade
ReplyDeleteWhoa now, "tyrannical"? I believe the polite term is "autocratic". :D
The only reason the new canon about Ponyville hurt was because it retconned previous canon from Winter Wrap Up.
ReplyDeleteSure, it forced me to scrap my plans for the ending of my fanfic, but that's hardly a big deal. It wouldn't even be a big deal if it scrapped my ENTIRE fanfic.
Seriously. Retconning! I can't stand it!
@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteI looked it up, it is in fact a valid use of it, it just has negative connotations in today's society. Besides, I thought everypony called Celestia a tyrant, which is why I looked it up. I agree, it's rather harsh to call her a tyrant, but there is literally not a possibility of her being overthrown ever.
Did anyone notice Scootaloo apparently smelling Sweetie Belle's mane during the end of the telescope scene? She leans in really close and grins as the scene ends. It was just a weird bit of animation, I guess, but that's what came to mind.
ReplyDeleteAnd here i thought that earth, unicorn and pegasus poines all went to different schools. It looks like i was wrong.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this episode. I'm glad the writers have expanded on the history of Equestria so much in these last couple of episodes.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was awesome! Learned a whole mess of new things, but one item in particular still evades me. Who and/or where are AJ, AB, and Big Mac's mother and father!? Maybe I missed something, but as of yet they have yet to even be mentioned. This mystery is driving me loco in the coco!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to whether we'll see more of Filthy Rich now that he's been established. Yeah, he seems okay from this episode, but then he did need what Granny Smith had to offer, so it's possible he was just being savvy in keeping his daughter from offending the Apples.
ReplyDeleteIt's just that having the farm be in financial trouble and threatened to be bought out by some businessman is such a classic trope that I'd be surprised if they can resist using it on MLP. Now we know the big business of Ponyville, it's operator, and that the Apples sell their products through them. And the daughter is already an antagonist, and the father is called "Filthy" be even nice ponies like Cheerilee.
Seems a recipe for future trouble to me.
@Butlerdidit
ReplyDeleteA knife and fork, actually. Also, he's a fat pony. So it would seem his special talent...is eating.
Fate is a cruel mistress sometimes, eh?
Also, I support "Chowder" as his fan name. (It beats another name derived from looking at their cutie mark. Yes, you, Fleur-de-Lis. *glares*)
I was impressed by it, didn't expect something that good.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the wildlife here. Manitcores, Cockatrii, Wendigoes and now Timber Wolves!
Granted they aren't as cool as the past three (even if Wendigoes suggest that Cannibolism is canon), but only from this show would we get mythical creatures outside the norm. Hell, we might end up seeing Rocs or something.
Gotta say I love the episodes that show us more about the world, hopefully we'll see more of that in the AJ goes missing ep.
@Toonicorn
ReplyDeletelol, yeah I can see that being a problem in the 50s since you just described what is for all intents and purposes, a Communist system. In fact, I'm now kinda shocked that anti-communists weren't having Oz bonfires during the Red Scare.
HEAR THAT, CONSERVATIVE BRONIES? CELESTIA'S A DIRTY COMMIE AND EQUESTRIA'S A SOCIALIST UTOPIA W/ FREE HEALTH CARE. YOU'VE BEEN WATCHING LEFTIST PROPAGANDA THIS WHOLE TIME.
I can recall tons of pony's that were seen during present episodes and during flash backs. I love how "In the dark" the fans are about the age limitations of a pony. To be honest, I also love how upcoming episodes are going to slap fan-fic writers in the face. Oh... how evil I am. Great episode!
ReplyDeleteDid anypony else notice that Big Mac managed to say something either than "Eeyup", or "Nope" this episode.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a whole season since we got a sentence out of that stallion. I dunno why I was so excited about that little fact.
@Wisdom Thumbs How so?
ReplyDelete@CityFlyer502
ReplyDelete>Making it more special for me was that I saw this at BroNYCon... The collective reaction when Apple Bloom chewed out Diamond Tiarra towards the end was just priceless.
Yes. Very yes.
@Harwick
ReplyDeleteBut Granny Smith is the only one who can make Zapapple Jam; He's not gonna want to give that up.
@Doctor Façade
ReplyDeleteOh you *can* overthrow her. It might take a Neighcronomicon, a baby dragon heart, and the blood of 666 unicorns, but you can overthrow her....
@Firemane
ReplyDeleteActually my good sir it was Rainbow Dash that caused ponyville, The same way she caused the mane 6 to get their cutie marks. You see while the mane 6 was traveling with the Doctor, they went back about 200 years before the apple family arrived. While they were there they ran into trouble, but long story short to help in stopping said trouble Rainbow Dash had to do a sonic rainnuke. Doing this released radiation into the near by environment, which was the Everfree Forest, but this was no ordinary radiation it was magical radiation. Over the years this radiation mutated that area and seeing as this magical radiation came from Rainbow Dash it inherited some of her abilities like weather control and at the epicenter of this radiation was a bunch of apple trees and they are the ones where most of her abilities are located such as bring birds home, being super fast, being awesome and radical, her rainbows, and her cutie mark. And this My Little Bronies is why Zap-Apples are rainbow colored and have lighting shaped stems. So literally Rainbow Dash is what holds Equestria together :D
@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteEenope. She'd get Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the Mane 6 to hold you off before sending you to the moon.
@pmcollectorboy
ReplyDeleteI tend to think Granny Smith's mane and tail were off-white or sandy blonde when she was younger; this screen shot would seem to confirm it, given that the bow and lace on her bonnet are lighter than her mane and tail.
@Knux
ReplyDeleteAnd only just one episode, Applebuck Season. TBH, I'd completely forgotten about that episode when I watched this one for the first time... For a moment I thought this was his first non-eeyup/nnope line.
@My Little Master Chief
ReplyDeleteyou forgot the part where Applejack killed her great grandfather and got her great grandmother pregnant
BEST. FUTURAMA. EVER.
Having played Red Alert 3 a while back, the zap apple trees remind me of Tesla coils and Prism towers. lol
ReplyDeleteBut of course, Tesla coil-like devices do exist in Equestria, as evident in Mare-Do-Well.
@Pav Feira
ReplyDeleteWell, he also said "Uh, AJ" in "Winter Wrap Up".
@Doctor Façade
ReplyDeleteSo she really is dependent on a bunch of teenagers to defend herself and the country?
Doesn't sound so overthrow-proof to me. :p
(and c'mon, we've been over this. If you're evil and you want to play Grimdark Hardball, one of your FIRST moves is to zap into Ponyville and arbitrarily kill a element bearer. If NMM does this instead of lame illusion magic, motherbuckers are reading by moonlight. And I think we all know that LULZ are the only reason Discord doesn't roll like that. But I digress.)
Wow. That was seriously an awesome episode. I always enjoy the episodes that have the CMC in them, but they've never reached into my top favorites, you know? Well, thats changed now! This was epic!
ReplyDeleteAnd might I add that Granny Smith was GORGEOUS when she was younger? I mean SNAP she is a right fine pretty gal right thar she is. ^^
And I don't think anyone could have come up with something as awesome as Zap Apples. Or Timber Wolves. Damn, those things are more epic then the pun they're based on. I expect plenty of fan art of them! I absolutely love the creatures in this show!
There is more I could say, but you get the idea.
AWESOME EPISODE! Really great. I think I like Ganny Smith now xD
Though I wonder what her name was when she was younger- or has that already been decided?
Applesmith?
Applepie?
Apple Maggie Delilah Smith Pie?
I dunno
LOVED IT! <3
Looks at bottom Picture.
ReplyDeleteSees my picture I submitted.
SWEET BABY CELESTIA!!!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

ReplyDeleteAnd I thought everypony's been over the fact that she does all that because she's an enormous troll.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteMYTH BUSTED
@Doctor Façade
ReplyDeleteWell *I* say that Goku would TOTALLY kick Superman's ass!
@Doctor Façade Correct. We must strike tactfully during one of the season openers, or during an episode where at least one member is completely unavailable. That way they'll have to choose between fighting us or whatever threat the season opens with.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to agree on that. In fact, young Granny Smith's mane and the yellow section of the zap apple seem to have the exact same color.
(Although there is actually a small difference between the color values, which can be determined using any software with an eyedropper tool.)
@mycutiemarkisagun Only from dark threats. We're not evil, we're immune to the Elements, but blades, fire, and horns can pierce human flesh.
ReplyDeleteAlso, is it just me, or where those old fashion stallions traveling w/ Granny Smith in her flashback kind of hot O.o I mean, they might have been her brothers or cousins, and they would be old and wrinkly as hell by now, but damn if they don't remind me of a certain male for Apploosa. For ponies, they are mighty sexy I do declare. We need more fan art from this episode!
ReplyDeleteTimber wolves!
Old Fashioned Ponies!
Young Granny Smith!
Zap Apples!
Sexy Old Fashioned Stallions!
All of Granny's Family!
EVERYTHING! xD
Okay I'm done.
But seriously, was I the only one who thought they were hot? What is this show doing to meeeee D: Lol its okay, I'm fine with it
Re: Zap Apples and RD's statement about 'rainbows not being known for taste', I think she meant pure, undistilled rainbows. Zap apples are rainbow-colored apples with magical properties.
ReplyDelete@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteShit i knew i forgto something lol.
INDEED! :D *Brohoof*
@Zalius
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! That way, only Pinkie Pie would see it coming because of her Pinkie sense and disregard of the fourth wall!
The problem being that even that could be enough to ruin that plan. This is the Mane 6 we're talking about.
It was a good episode, I grinned as Fanon was shattered by glorious canon once again during the story scene.
ReplyDeleteTop Tip: On the map, Sweet Apple Acres and the Everfree Forest are nowhere near each other. In the rest of the episode, they're next to each other.
ReplyDeleteLesson Learned: Granny Smith's map is WRONG.
You forgot to mention the return of Scootaloo's "What are you, a dictionary?" insult!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I too laughed a little too hard when she got jealous. (LET'S GET YOGURT! Teen Girl Squad? Anyone? Dok.)
@Dachimotsu It's generally accepted as either. Don't nitpick on things that are that unimportant...
ReplyDeleteLooking at that map, I'm beginning to think that Equestria is only about 20 miles across. Either that, or ponies can run a lo-o-ong way in a very short time, because Fluttershy's cottage is right on the edge of Everfree and Sweet Apple Acres is pretty far from it (according to Granny Smith's map), but you can clearly hear Fluttershy scream at her cottage from Sweet Apple Acres in "Secret of My Excess" and the others can get there within a few moments.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, we must face the fact that this show often makes no friggin' sense from episode to episode.
Okay, so, it's been stated that Ponyville is about a hundred years old. Is that correct?
ReplyDeleteIt's also been speculated that Granny Smith is not that old, and yet she is older than Ponyville?
Well, let's consider this a bit. We're assuming that ponies use a base-10 numerical system like us. We use a base-10 system because we have 10 fingers. Ponies do not have fingers; they have 4 hooves. It would make more sense for ponies to use a base-8 system. 100 in base-8 is 64 in base-10.
more like Scootaloo was releasing the doves \_O__/
ReplyDeletepossibly hearing voices in her head saying they must burn in her light.
/wooo/
When looking for Derpy, the weirdest thing I saw was probably Cheerilee with the wrong cutie mark.
ReplyDeleteA few of the scenes when she's outside speaking to "Granny", she has 3 umbrellas instead of the flowers.
Anypony else catch one of the Doctor Whooves regenerations that was in Sweet and Elie during this episode's flashback?
ReplyDelete@eddmario *"Sweet and Elite"
ReplyDelete@Don't Call Me Brony (Please)
ReplyDeleteYeah, you just showed why the whole canon vs. fanon thing is pretty funny when it comes to FIM - at the end of the day, IT IS A KID'S SHOW, not Game of Thrones. Equestria's canon geography and history was never gonna be as intricate and well thought-out as say, Westeros or Middle Earth or the Mass Effect galaxy. So if you're writing a fanfic with a cool alternate history or geography or whatever, Keep Calm And Canter On.
Duh, right?
@archiveit Chowder is right! did you see that lovesick look on Twist as she glanced to the Chowder like pony with the COOKING cutie mark no less stuffing his face? yeah that was a total Chowder reference and probably how their going to explain why she isn't always hanging out with the CMC XD
ReplyDeleteIt was a small thing but after watching that episode I can only think of Scootaloo as being part Rabbit and part Chicken. SHE HAS RABBIT FEET WITHOUT A COSTUME ON! look at her hop it's so adorable! XD
ReplyDeleteOk granted Sweetie Belle had it too :P it was still cute watching Scootatinger hopping around xD
@Ford
ReplyDeletethis one is easy to explain. they have been celebrating the Summer festival for the last 100 years, it started in Canterlot of course one would have to assume, and THEN the ponies that decided to stay (some from Canterlot even) also brought with them their own traditions.
So Ponyville could be like 50ish years old? O.o and we still don't know what one year is compared to human years. not even sure if they scale age with human world ponies where I think 1 year is roughly 8? development wise that equals like 6 human development.
So yeah far as how Equestrian ponies mature that is a whole different ball game.

ReplyDelete@Cátsy
ReplyDeletetechnically that farm is considered part of the everfree no? if you look in the flashback it pretty much shows how much they have cleared out the forest to expand their agricultural needs? Maybe those Zap-Apple seeds work as magical lightning rods too? hmm so much canon fodder to work with xD
Am I the only one who has seen that the zap apple look like the old Apple logo?
ReplyDeleteDerpy was there in spirit. Take a look at Diamond Tiara's mouth after Granny Smith walks into the classroom. THERE'S your Derpy.
ReplyDeleteSo no new Derpy sighting? darn =/
ReplyDeleteStill a fun ep :)
Maybe there will be more about AJ's parents in The Last Roundup.
ReplyDeleteOkay, there may not be a Derpy sighting, but I can't believe nopony else has picked up on the second Doctor Whooves sighting. Technically, though, I guess it is the THIRD Doctor. The blue unicorn in the red coat from Sweet and Elite can be seen on the far left of the very end of Granny Smith's flashback. Harder to recognize due to sepia tone, but I am almost positive it is him.
ReplyDeleteBah! They broke the Derpy Chain™! /pitchforksandtorches
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I don't see continuity in regards to the whole Winter Wrap-Up vs Family Appreciation Day thing being broken. As I had said in a previous thread, I suspect Twilight's research into Ponyville's history to be faulty and suspect. This is mainly due to the several factors that support Smith's version of the tale, namely a possible supporting account from the Rich family (Filthy, and if he's still alive, Stinking), and that Cheerilee didn't interject into Smith's tale to question or correct historical inconsistencies (of course, this being a kid's show on a time table, that could've just been left out for any number of reasons). Ultimately, even though Smith's antics this episode paint her in a rather senile light, she herself admits how silly and ridiculous some (read: most) of the rituals for the zap apples are, leading me to believe she's still got it together up there. That is to say, she's a more reliable narrator for history than Pinkie Pie.
The tl; dr version: Twilight sucks at looking up historical geographic data. She needs to stick to what she knows, apparently.
Nice to see I'm not the only one who noticed the weather either followed or was attracted by the Zap Apples.
ReplyDeleteThough I'm a little disappointed by the lack of Timber Wolfs in the post. Oh well, including the angry Great Granny Smith more than made up for it.
So the Smiths are the forerunners for the Apples, does that mean there's an actual Granny Smith or does she resemble the pun?
And Yes Cereal, your not the only one to just now notice the lightning stems.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else notice that they replaced Granny Smith's saggy old hip for this episode? She's far more spry than in her previous appearances.
ReplyDeleteDamnit, I'm always in time for this but now I'm late. Here you go guys, have my review of the episode!
ReplyDeletehttp://awthredestim.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic.html
Granny smith's hair is blonde! you idiot! lol
ReplyDeleteI do believe Scootaloo is confused. (What a shock, eh? 9.9 ) Applebloom is CLEARLY not a dictionary.
ReplyDeleteFrom her behavior, she is obviously a thesaurus.
I noticed that stem, too. Great episode!
ReplyDeleteFolks over in Ponibooru have taken to calling the new kid Russel, since he looks like the boy from the movie "Up"
ReplyDeleteScootabunny is the best bunny, sorry Angel.. AHHH NOOOOO DOWN STOP AHHHH FLUTTERSHY COME GET YOUR RABBIT AHHHH THE PAIN!!!
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one reminded of HP Lovecraft's "Colour out of space"?
