Time to party everypony, the Draw Off results are finally in! Thank you all for your patience over the past month while we got around to judging. It was quite daunting to comb over the 800+ entries we had, but we have narrowed it down to the top three in each category. Sadly we had to eliminate many great entries and if I could I would have given prizes to so many others! You all are a great bunch and have made this event greater than anything I could ever have envisioned. I'm proud as punch of all of you!
Before we get to the winners I would like to thank my fellow staff members at EqD for hosting this event and I would also like to extend thanks to Fetchbeer, Larrz, Peperoger, and Jopoho of Know Your Meme for helping during the pre-planning phase of the event. Extra thanks also for the help provided by Captain64 and Garrett Gilchrist for suggestions and questions that helped make this event a much more pleasant experience!
Without further ado, as I'm sure you're tired of my jibber-jabbing, the contest winners! Check them out after the break!
Update: Thank you all that wrote in and made us aware of your concerns over the Traditional category. We believe we have resolved the situation so check out the traditional section for changes we made to the lineup.

Before getting into this category I must say that this one was especially hard to judge. A lot of great artwork was submitted for this category and it was painful having to cut what we did. To compensate a little we have included the 4th and 5th place runner ups to give them some attention!

ReplyDelete3rd place has been in my favorites folder for a long time now :3
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhhhhhh...
ReplyDeleteI can see how it was painful cutting all the entries down to just these. All of these are so well done. Congrats to everyone that won, and also everyone that participated.
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhhhhhh...
ReplyDeleteWow, good job to those who did this!
ReplyDeleteThose Hand Drawn ones are absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeletei wouldn't want to be in charge of this. <-<
ReplyDeleteloved all of these~
ReplyDeleteUc77's Comic Made Me LMAO For Far Too Long
ReplyDeleteAh, shoot! I'm getting too used to sitting out in the loser circle.
ReplyDeleteSo much amazing art!
ReplyDeleteHats off to everyone who participated!
WoW...
ReplyDeleteWow, amazing and uber cool. I need ta get drawin'...
ReplyDeleteAww man, I really thought I had a chance... oh well. Congradulations to the winners!
ReplyDelete3rd place as in comics
ReplyDeleteSo much talent, it's amazing to see the sheer passion for the show these artists have, great work!
ReplyDeleteThat Trixie comic was mega-powerful. Wow.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the winners! Heck, even if you did not get in the top 3, thanks for participating!
ReplyDeleteI am glad I ,somewhat, participated in making this event what it is today. Hopefully next contest similar to this would have pixel art as a separate category instead of colliding with the vector category.
I would like to thank Calpain, for starting an event like this and to the people who also helped him with the event.
I hope there will be a event similar to this in the future.
Nice artwork my god! I thought the third one in traditional art was brilliant! Those colors are so soft and nice~
ReplyDeleteHand drawn is just crazy man! Each one was amazing! And I CAN see why PK loved 4th, and being brutally honest I like it way more than Lyra and Bonbon's one. Not saying is bad, but in comparison, 4th leaves me with my jaw wide open :L
This event was RIDICULOUSLY hard to judge. Great job, all you artists out there!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing, I can't wait to see what everyone will produce next year! (or more accurately, the upcoming year)
ReplyDelete@Al_Skylark
ReplyDeleteOh, I dunno, man. Number two literally gave me three different kinds of diabetes.
WAT
ReplyDeleteWow ... I am speechless. Congratulations to all these artist, y'all are amazing.
ReplyDelete@PK
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm just an insensitive bastard ;n;
Congrats to the winners! It was really fun (and stressful!) entering this contest! I got to see a lot of great art because of this. And thanks so much to Calpain and co. for organizing this! I'd love to have another contest sometime.
ReplyDelete(I actually thought judging would take a lot longer honestly.)
@Captian64
ReplyDeleteThere will certainly be more! I'm planning either a music or animation contest for the spring with prizes of course.
At some point I will ask the EqD community which of the two they prefer and I'll go from there!
@Calpain
ReplyDeleteAn animation contest would be awesome! It'd be just the amount of motivation I need to get started on mines!
I approve! :D
@Calpain and PK
ReplyDeleteThis is unrelated, but I was wondering if you guys were going to have Q & Neighs at some point.
I think without a doubt the one that won the hand drawn digital deserves it. I still cannot get over how epic that one is.
ReplyDeleteAh, I never stood a chance for the traditional. Congratulations to all of the winners - and thank you mods, judges, and contributers for all your hard work.
ReplyDeleteYou should do a plushies and customs contest next!
ReplyDeleteWow.... I'm curious as to now what the other entries were because a lot of these just plain suck. I mean, what are we appealing to? Memes or actual art? Number 2 in traditional should have gotten number 1 all the way.
ReplyDelete5th
ReplyDeleteTHE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING THAT YOU GUYS HAVE TURNED OUT EVER!
@Calpain
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that! I would like to see a music contest because of the musical talent the brony community has. An animation contest would also be an interesting contest.
Tanks for letting me participate in the judging guys! You knew how to make a sick guy happy that night!
ReplyDelete@Calpain
ReplyDeleteMusic, you say?
Well, i'm just about to lay down some big bucks for music software, so this will be a great way to start it off!
@gillnavisingh
ReplyDeleteWell, hope that you er... feel better!
I'm so happy ^_^

Number 3 in hand drawn has been in my folder for quite some time.
ReplyDeletePeter Parker is disguised as spiderman who is disguised as mare-do-well
ReplyDeleteYour argument is invalid
Sooooo epic
ReplyDeleteAhh, I remember the first comic, poor Trixie, we shall probably never know what happened to you after you ran out of town.
ReplyDeleteThese are worthy pieces, especially FruitBloodMilkShake's piece, I love that one. Congratulations winners! And thank you EqD staff, judges, and others for running this! ^^
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners and to everyone who participated! And thank you Calpain and the rest of EqD crew for holding this event! I wasn't expecting to win, I just did this for fun and to meet new people, both of which were successful :)
ReplyDeletetop comic #2 = LMAO if RD was real i think that would happen to me
ReplyDeleteHuh, somehow I never even saw the entry that won 1st in the vector category. Not too surprising it won. I really wanted to do something generally along those lines with one of my entries, a group shot of just about everypony, but I completely drew a blank on how to make it more interesting than all of them just standing there.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, back when the final compilation post went up, I almost joked that with so many entries it'd take another month just to be able to judge them all. Didn't realize quite how close that would have come to being true. The comic category alone would've been practically impossible to decide.
Third place, traditional art was really good, but doesn't Celestia have wings? Also, the mare do well comic almost killed me, I laughed so hard I couldn't hardly breathe. Jiayi's Season One drawing was astounding, I had a tab up for it on my iPod forever because it was just that good. Overall, if these are the winners, I'd be interested in seeing maybe a gallery with all the entries, because there had to have been some great ones that weren't quite as good as these, but phenomenal nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteSome beautiful work all around... Congrats to all of the winners, and thanks to everyone involved!

ReplyDelete@AxelWolfen
ReplyDeleteAll the entries should be able to be found in the four compilation posts:
1 2 3 4
@jessewq wasnt even aware of that, thanks!
ReplyDeleteWANT. BON BON. SHORTS/BOXERS. NOW.
ReplyDeleteNo offense, but #2 and #3 in the Hand Drawn Digital category should have been swapped. But I wasn't one of the judges, so I won't make a fuss over it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I won't make any more of a fuss over it than I already have.
Congratulations to all the winners. Such fantastic and breath-taking pieces!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all of the winners!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job everyone! This was judged better than I expected. :)
ReplyDeleteHowever, I disagree with the placement of the Bon Bon and Lyra picture in the digital section. The submission underneath it far exceeds it in technique, details, composition, and pretty much everything! Yes, the Lyra and Bon Bon pic is cute and the coloring and art style are lovely, but the composition is boring and average, the idea isn't anything original or unique, the technique is far lesser to the one underneath it, and it honestly is not anything that special. Don't get me wrong, it is very nice, but simply not something to get excited over- or come in second in a contest.
However, this is my view on the matter, but it is too late for any sort of change. I accept that, and must congratulate all the final winners! Great job everypony- you all are AWESOME! :D

ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite type of contest, because regardless of the price, we are all winners! Look at that amazing artwork! Some of those are worthy of hanging on a musseum wall!
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of fun with it, great work guys! Judging all those pictures sure was hard work.
Seriously. The results from the vector category are disappointing. I've seen other pictures, which are clearly better than these ones.
ReplyDeletecongrats winners! was fun competing with you guys. you are all wonderful artists ^_^
ReplyDeleteIm disappointed that I didnt get 3rd or 2nd place, I dont like the art of those who currently hold those places. That the one who got 1st place got that spot was obvious from the start...
ReplyDeleteI suppose there wont be any prices at all for the runners up right?
First place winner excepted, what happened with the vector/pixel category? :/
ReplyDeleteAw shucks... Well, congratulations to the winners ^^
ReplyDeletecongrats ppl
ReplyDeletedammit
Such amazing drawings, congratulations to the winners :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Though really, I wonder what the judging requirements were. I can't see any consistent form of evaluation. 8|
ReplyDeleteNo offense to some winners, but really? :/
Vector and hand drawn results were totaly off.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Seif and Vella, I haven't seen much of the hand drawn entries but out of these three the third one should've definitely been the winner. The pencil drawing is nice but it lacks, above everything, depth to the values and overall contrast. And it's just..Rarity's head. It's a very nice drawing but I don't think it deserves second place. As for the first place art, it can pretty much pass as a vector. I have nothing against vectors, but if you're going to copy two characters that close to the original style in the show, why not just do a vector? Yes, it does take technique to mimic the style perfectly, but that's pretty much it. As for hand drawn digital, Sakuyamon should've definitely gotten first place.
ReplyDeleteBut thats just my opinion, I know it must've been hell judging these

@TundraTerror
ReplyDeleteWe have been informed of this issue and are taking steps to resolve it. Please stand by for an update and thank you for letting us know of this situation!
Congrats to the winners! I didn't win this time, but if there's ever an animation one, I'll definitely give it a go!
ReplyDeletemother of celestia so many awesome artists and really good art
ReplyDeleteTechnically shouldn't the 2nd place be bumped up to 1st and 3rd to second and the new piece be third? Since it wasn't included to begin with.
ReplyDelete@Vella
ReplyDeleteIm with Vella, why just shove in a seemingly random entry that did not win anything, isntead of bumping the second, third, fourth etc places up one spot? Is it so that the original first and second place winners already had their prizes collected? because I can't really see any other reason as to why you'd throw in a new picture in the first place....
@DeerioJim
ReplyDeleteSome prizes had been paid out before people brought the problem to our attention so it wasn't possible to just move the places up a notch. Considering the compilations were up for at least a month and we received no formal complaints about any entries I proceeded to contact and award individuals after the results were posted as I believed there to be no problem.
So as a result we looked closely at the traditional category again for potential first place quality pics and whittled them down to the one we did select. In the future to prevent such a roundabout way of dealing with a problem like this I'll more than likely implement a period after results go up for people to air their grievances so that potential problems can be worked out.
Would community input in the judging process be possible in the future as well? People could vote and while it needn't decide the winner directly, it could be a factor in the judges' decisions.
ReplyDelete@pixelgalaxy
ReplyDeleteYep! Community voting in the future is definitely an idea to consider as it not only gets the EqD community involved a bit more but provides more judging eyes for the pieces displayed.
More than likely I'll test this idea out for the spring event and see how it goes. I'll open up a time for community suggestions and ideas a month or month and a half before that event officially starts and go with the method most suggested.
I'm sure with the wonderful community here that events I host will continue to become more and more refined. This was my first ever contest and despite pre-planning with some very talented people some issues did come up with the event that I and my planners did not foresee. I do apologize for hiccups during this contest everyone, but it only strengthens my resolve to improve.
I hope the winner of the Vector category wasn't another hiccup, because it seems odd that it was listed in the Hand Drawn Digital Entries category in the final compilation post, instead of with the rest of the vectors. If it is a vector then it's a good choice for 1st place, otherwise it won a category it wasn't even supposed to be a part of. It does look like it could be a vector, so hopefully the mix up was just that it was accidentally listed in the wrong section a month ago.
ReplyDeleteClearly the winners were judged on drawing ability.
ReplyDeleteCommunity input shouldn't really be a huge factor in my opinion. I'm sure the judges tried their hardest to consider every piece of art from an objective point of view. Putting it completely in the hands of the masses would turn it into a popularity contest. I do like the idea of consulting with artists of different mediums and allowing the community to comment on each entry--it's important to understand what goes into each piece and acknowledge skill and effort, even if it is not prize-winning.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I wouldn't want to see it become a popularity contest, but I think you could reasonably control that with some rules and procedure. For instance, no voting until all entries are received (maybe don't *show* the entries until all are received either), votes are private, any solicitation for votes by the artist could disqualify their entries... and as said, it shouldn't be the single determining factor.
ReplyDeleteIf you do another one, can you make a rule that only art that has been drawn in that month be submitted? If I knew any art piece could have been submitted, I would have submitted my vector of the Comic Con Poster that I did during the summer -.-
