That song is so damn catchy, it's a shame that the actual machine noises weren't kept, as they matched the instruments.
I hope Steffan Andrews gets to work on MLP songs again, I think he did a great job. Maybe the big song in the season finale with feature his orchestration.
Number 3 is the perfect example of why I love these BGM videos, William Anderson needs more credit. He'd be a good guest a convention.
Found the Flim Flam Bros. Song BGm rather entertaining just from the fact that can still hear the BG ponies during it.
Though all 3 of these, along with all the songs in the show so far made me wonder about something. Will Hasbro put forth an official MLP:FiM soundtrack or song collection? On top of that, how many would be interested in something like that?
@TechnoTrot That is about what I would expect from most of us. As we do seem to be ravenous for show accurate merchandise, and this might be something we could convince Hasbro to do. After all, still see adds for those Kidz bop cds.
Well, looks like might need to start up a draft letter to Hasbro then. As this would be a great way to support the show, and the talented musicians behind it.
Besides, who could resit a long car ride filled with songs like Winter Wrap Up, Art of the Dress, and Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000. Just to name a few. Wait... I would not be surprised if we already did this, but with the addition of fan made music too.
Thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of that, Daniel Ingram made such a big point of crediting him on Twitter that I jumped to the conclusion that this was the first time they worked together.
The credits for the episodes could do with being a little more informative on these matters, they don't even mention orchestration, I just assumed Daniel Ingram had always done it himself in the past.
@Sgt Byrd I hear ya - I've been doing research for this big project I'm working on and quite a number of people in MLP's music department are simply uncredited. No idea why.
Could it be possible that they are seen as subcontractors to Daniel Ingram, i.e. Daniel Ingram has complete control over who he employs to do the work, and hence only he gets the credit?
@Sgt Byrd I don't know - it's a standard thing in the film music industry where people working "in the background" or as an assistant to the composer are not credited. Steffan does have a website and a Facebook page, though.
Interesting, I think these background workers deserve credit for it, loads of Top Drawer animators get listed at the end. They give their background workers the same respect they give their background ponies :P
I checked out his site, looked neat. His alias (Orchetect) is 20% punnier (so so sorry).
When laying the tracks, it seems odd to me to hear any speech in background tracks. (if just for the problem with internationalization of the show) What reason is there to include the background ponies singing? Are there hard and fast rules?
@Cosmofur: The background ponies/crowd/choir voices are in this video because the audio was taken from the rear speakers of the 5.1 surround mix. Because the crowd is all around you, their singing comes from all channels.
I presume that the version that they send to TV shows for dubbing is a different version, that doesn't include any vocals at all.
The iTunes rip that we get has 5.1 audio, but the raw source that they send for dubbing presumably isn't.
The reason that the BGM rips (taken from the iTunes 5.1 source) have some speech in the background is because the speech is distributed accross more than 1 track, even though most of it is on the centre track. And the background singers come through very strong in the non centre tracks, hence their prominence in the Flim Flam Brothers Song rip.
There's not much that can be done about that sadly. To get proper BGM, we'd have to wait for the soundtrack (don't wanna hold my breath for that one).
@Cosmofur Yes, Sgt Byrd is right, for the Flim Flam song, the background singers are in all the audio channels (L, R, Center, Surround L, and Surround R). So they can't be removed.
Contrast this with Becoming Popular, for example, where this wasn't the case - the backing vocals were only in the front left and right channels, which allowed the extraction of the full song, a BGM+backup vocals version, and a BGM only version.
I'm not sure why Flim Flam is different other than maybe it was intentional like @Jordan said, since there are ponies standing all over the place, so if you watch the show on your 5000 watt surround sound home theater system, you'll feel like you really are right there in the crowd in Ponyville :P
Anyways, this is obviously a very roundabout way of getting the music from the show! Here's hoping for a soundtrack someday (that includes more than just the actual songs)...
@Cosmofur Oh, and regarding internationalization, I don't really know, but it probably isn't that hard for them to just pop in a new audio track and remaster it. If I had to guess they probably have tracks dedicated to vocals only and then use surround panning and reverb, etc to place them where they want.
But I'm definitely no expert on that, so I have no idea really.
@Mattatatta Only problem with the Sisterhooves Social version is that it's only 13 seconds long, and compared to The Last Roundup version, cut a little bit. But I know what you mean.
That's a problem with most BGM rips, as the channels aren't simply a partitioning of the possible sounds, some of the Flim Flams will be in the other channels, just as in real life sound will bounce of the things around you and come at you at different volumes from different directions.
Sadly until a soundtrack comes out, this is the best that can be done.

The BG music in this episode was rather good (as always) so hooray for these.

Number 3...
ReplyDeleteWhy am I thinking of Super Mario Bros 3.?
I love, LOVE the Fluttershy picture! It's absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDelete@Sgt Byrd
ReplyDeleteAddendum: turns out according to his twitter he is indeed still working on something MLP, sounds good.
All of em are good. I especially love 2, it's just got a fitting vibe to it for Applejack.
ReplyDeleteAnd once again!, I am entertained and amazed by Mr. Daniel Ingram. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad we have him doing our songs, he's got talent to spare, and he makes excellent and memorable content for us. :)
This was certainly no exception. Well done Daniel, can't wait for your next piece. :)
@marioandsonic
ReplyDeleteAddendum:
Yeah! It reminds me a lot of this theme:

A reference, maybe?

@Hawklaser
ReplyDeleteDay 1 purchase from me if it ever happens. No exception.
Yeaaa. BGM for the new song. Wonder if I can convince you friend of mine to sing it with me?
ReplyDelete#2 was also used in Sisterhooves Social for the "Being sisters is like apple pie" simile.
ReplyDeleteClearly this piece should be dubbed "Applejack's Wisdom"02.3
It's also worth promoting this song, because it's a wonderful remake of that theme.

3) Isn't that the same scene? There wasn't anything but music for that part.
ReplyDelete@ZeroHero
ReplyDeleteTypical. Daniel Ingram only did one of these songs. Why does everyone forget William Anderson?
The MLP CD soundtrack? Make it so!!!! ^_^

ReplyDeleteSteffan has always been Daniel Ingram's orchestrator on MLP. This isn't just a one-off thing.

Ahhh good music as always, Daniel Ingram and William Anderson just create such wonderful pieces.
ReplyDeleteCome on Hasbro give us an offical CD release!
