I did find it odd that, despite having one for a pet/assistant, Twilight knew NOTHING about dragons. xD But it made sure Zecora got another appearance at least. <3
WELL! Good thing I haven't submitted my fanfic yet. Back to the drawing board, got to no-prize the whole "teenage Spike" thing, and remove the part where he flies. Sigh. I love writing fanfic but it's so hard to hit a moving target. ;)
Wow. I kinda liked spike as the rampaging dragon. I'm pretty sure today's drawfriend will be filled with monster-spike. Over-all a good episode. Can't wait for the next CHRISTMAS THEMED one!
I've got semester finals next week, and I didn't study. Then again, I'm only a highschool freshman so I don't have it nearly as bad. Best of luck to you.
Also, did you have to use that new youtube layout for your channel? It's a pain, in my opinion! Makes it almost impossible for me to properly browse your channel.
Best episode of the series so far, amazing stuff. Also, Wonderbolts are now Special Forces. This pleases me. Oh, and Derpy, Lyra, and Bon-Bon in the same scene. Head explosion time.
1) Spike, y u no have wings? 2) King Kong/Godzilla references abound 3) Well, Rarity is officially 100% not oblivious of Spike's feelings. Her own are a little ambiguous though. Can't WAIT to see the fics stemming from that. 4) Wow, Cheerilee got some serious screen time. Also, a few new named ponies.
@Unknown Actually you MAY still have a chance, from what i seen dragons have two forms, one born of greed one without, cause have you see the flashback ep, that adult spike looks NOTHING like the rampaging one in that ep
Am I the only one who find SpikeXRarity being canon to be a bit of a mistake? I mean, for one, Rarity being oblivious to Spike's feelings is a great running gag. Second, it's just plain... wrong. Besides, it's better to leave these things open ended and let the fans fill in the blanks.
For pony's sake, Spike x Rarity is not cannon. As someone who is married with a kid, and who has seen his fair share of relationships, two pecks on the cheek does not a romantic entanglement make. Nothing in this episode suggested that Rarity reciprocates romantic feelings for Spike.
I think it's safe to say that Rarity is aware of Spike's feelings. I'd argue they are very close friends after this, but not anything beyond that, yet.
One of my favorites this season so far, not "The" favorite though.
I went into the episode with a bit of hesitation, I must admit, since I wasn't too fond of the whole idea of Spike growing up. Seeing it unfold, though, it was better than I thought it would be! It probably won't be a favourite episode of mine, but definitely worth watching again.
And regarding Rarity and Spike... well, I've never really thought she was unaware of his feelings. Considering their age difference, I think she sees him more as a little brother rather than a potential love interest though (so the pecks are more friendly than romantic).
@Nimbus the Unicorn That only tells us that she knows how he feels. It's entirely possible she stops him from saying it out loud to spare his feelings. After all, she doesn't answer him, and if she did have feelings (and they were plummeting to their doom) I'd think she'd say something.
She obviously didn't want him to say the "c" word out loud, because then they would have to confront something best left unspoken. "Shushing" him (a) prevented her from having to say she doesn't reciprocate, (b) avoids an awkward conversation, and (c) would have allowed Spike to have a happy final thought had RD and Fluttershy not saved them. If Rarity DID reciprocate, she would NOT have shushed Spike, and would have quickly replied "me too!" After all, she would have had nothing to lose, since they might well have died.
I'm wondering why Spike became incoherent the larger he got. No wings, excusable. Not blasting things with fire, easy (stuff that's burned to a crisp is not as shiny). But Spike not being a smartmouth? What's up with that?
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that one huge f'ing loose end was left after the too-abrupt ending?
How is Spike going to deal with the political fallout of this? There's no guarantee that Spike won't do this again in the future, and he destroyed large parts of the town. I feel like there would be a huge percentage of the population that would want him out of Ponyville. Even his best friends would start to be a little wary of him... Everyone just forgave and forgot a little too easily.
I say the best line of the episode has to be "I'm assaulting him with cake." I predict that will be combined with the party cannon for really awesome pictures in the coming drawfriends :D
Well, I hope you guys are right, because that'd be incredibly awkward otherwise. But again, it would've been better if Rarity was oblivious for the rest of the series so they could keep it a running gag.
I think Rarity is perfectly aware how Spike feels, but he IS a baby dragon and she is a grown pony. I think she thinks it's cute, and loves the little guy just as much as her other friends, and was really touched when he gave her the ruby and admitted likeing her, but is really just incapable of making this into a romantic situation. A peck on the cheek is the best Spike will get.
After all, this is a kids show. The best kids show if all time, but a kids show.
How in Equestria do you manage to run this place and stay afloat in college? My hat is off to you. I can't keep my email clear even without a bunch of crazy ponies having the address.
At the part where Pinkie is throwing the cakes at Spike, listen to the music. Is it just me, or does it sound similar to James Horner's Combat Drop from the movie Aliens?
@Pyre-Vulpimorph There's actually a logical answer to that! The Hub is actually broadcast in 1080i at a specific framerate. To minimize the interlacing effect, I must run a process called "deinterlacing" and output to 23.976fps. There's always some minor interlacing left, but the quality is much better than it was when I ran them at 29FPS. It's a tradeoff.
I've definitely tried MANY different framerates, post-processing effects, codecs, and programs. However, this was the best I've been able to make it. :) I'm always happy to get feedback and advice, though!
I see. I thought you were just directly upconverting it from 1280x720 to 1920x1080, all progressive scan. I guess deinterlacing from 1080i to 1080p makes it harder.
Not everyone is bothered by judder, but I am. I can watch 24FPS film just fine, but the frames don't line up in converted video, which exacerbates the perception of "jerkiness".

Wow. I kinda liked spike as the rampaging dragon. I'm pretty sure today's drawfriend will be filled with monster-spike. Over-all a good episode. Can't wait for the next CHRISTMAS THEMED one!
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that Twilight's go-to gift is a book. Because ya know, no one would see that coming.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with your finals, Cereal. <3
ReplyDeleteI've got semester finals next week, and I didn't study. Then again, I'm only a highschool freshman so I don't have it nearly as bad. Best of luck to you.

ReplyDeleteHola! :)
@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteYes! Thank you very much, Xyro. It's appreciated!
Also, did you have to use that new youtube layout for your channel? It's a pain, in my opinion! Makes it almost impossible for me to properly browse your channel.
In any event, keep up the good work!
@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteYou're a hero among the bronies!
Best episode of the series so far, amazing stuff. Also, Wonderbolts are now Special Forces. This pleases me. Oh, and Derpy, Lyra, and Bon-Bon in the same scene. Head explosion time.
ReplyDelete@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteSince when do you have a third(fourth) account? o_O
I'll have to link that in my 'Becoming Popular' video.
Annnnnd, now awaiting for the video to process or Youtube to un-eff itself.
Things to take from this:
ReplyDelete1) Spike, y u no have wings?
2) King Kong/Godzilla references abound
3) Well, Rarity is officially 100% not oblivious of Spike's feelings. Her own are a little ambiguous though. Can't WAIT to see the fics stemming from that.
4) Wow, Cheerilee got some serious screen time. Also, a few new named ponies.
@Doc Whoof
ReplyDeleteHe also maded pinkie homeless when he destroyed sugarcube corner.
@Unknown Actually you MAY still have a chance, from what i seen dragons have two forms, one born of greed one without, cause have you see the flashback ep, that adult spike looks NOTHING like the rampaging one in that ep
ReplyDelete@Manajix
ReplyDeleteMayhaps he is a different breed of dragon to the ones we've seen in the past?
After all, he developed into a quadruped, while every other dragon we have seen has been a biped...
Though I'll admit, I don't know much about the anatomy of dragons in Equestria.
According to one of the posters in that doctor's room, the inside of a pony's body is...kinda weird. At least it looks a little strange to me.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who find SpikeXRarity being canon to be a bit of a mistake? I mean, for one, Rarity being oblivious to Spike's feelings is a great running gag. Second, it's just plain... wrong. Besides, it's better to leave these things open ended and let the fans fill in the blanks.
ReplyDeleteSigh... Another loud actionepisode with lots of mediocre gags.
ReplyDeleteNot a good one this time.
@Nimbus the Unicorn
ReplyDeleteFor pony's sake, Spike x Rarity is not cannon. As someone who is married with a kid, and who has seen his fair share of relationships, two pecks on the cheek does not a romantic entanglement make. Nothing in this episode suggested that Rarity reciprocates romantic feelings for Spike.
@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteOh sweet Celestia, did I just type cannon for canon? I must have more coffee.
this was a good episode
ReplyDeleteNot a bad episode at all, it has some good moments. I didn't like the designs for Spike's transformations, though :$
ReplyDeletespoiler; it is a awesome episode (sorry lol :D )
ReplyDeleteThere's a 1080p stream up
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FnR0zFCRUs&hd=1
Also, does it link automatically?
Mandatory: "Brace yourselves, incoming Spike + Rarity Fics"
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say that Rarity is aware of Spike's feelings. I'd argue they are very close friends after this, but not anything beyond that, yet.
One of my favorites this season so far, not "The" favorite though.

ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteThen what about the part where Rarity stopped Spike when he was telling her he has a crush on her? If they're still just friends, what's up with that?
AKA BEST EPISODE #3
ReplyDeleteBest MLP episode of all time.
1080p is now actually in 1080p! :D YouTube figured itself out, y'all go watch now! ;)

@Nimbus the Unicorn

"Shushing" him (a) prevented her from having to say she doesn't reciprocate, (b) avoids an awkward conversation, and (c) would have allowed Spike to have a happy final thought had RD and Fluttershy not saved them. @Worsh
ReplyDeleteAlso, what he said.
@Eric
ReplyDeleteHe's a wizard.
I just wanted to point out a fatal logic flaw I keep seeing...
ReplyDeleteIf nobody knows anything about dragons (except the foreign shaman)... then how could Twilight have researched them?
Regarding the "shush":
ReplyDeleteAlso keep in mind Spike was saying it "in case we don't make it." It could have just been Rarity saying "don't talk like that."
Everyone go to the fan fic It Takes a Village, read it, and read the latest comments it will explain everything
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering why Spike became incoherent the larger he got. No wings, excusable. Not blasting things with fire, easy (stuff that's burned to a crisp is not as shiny). But Spike not being a smartmouth? What's up with that?

Sorcerer's Apprentice reference FTW.
ReplyDeleteWell, it _is_ a kid's show, after all :P
ReplyDelete@Token T
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of that movie...
I say the best line of the episode has to be "I'm assaulting him with cake." I predict that will be combined with the party cannon for really awesome pictures in the coming drawfriends :D
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeleteOkay in order, the princess will deal with the damages, she silence the two doctors on pain of death to not blab.
No one recognizes it was spike in his adult form (if fluttershy, a animal expert coudn't recognize greed size spike, NO ONE CAN!)
and i think the mane six would forgive him, afterall they tecnically cause discord to run rampant under there spell so they can't say much.
@Kitsunekun VII
ReplyDeletesimple greed is like drugs dragon, they get stronger but they also mess with its head
Favorite episode of the season so far. The only problem I had with it was Twilight not knowing about dragon hoarding.
ReplyDelete@Unknown
Presumably the same way Twilight got out of trouble for the parasprites and the want-it, need-it spell.
@Eric
ReplyDeleteBasic HTML tags. "a" tags are for links. :)
Do a bit of googling on how to create links in HTML - input that in here, you're golden!
Well, I hope you guys are right, because that'd be incredibly awkward otherwise. But again, it would've been better if Rarity was oblivious for the rest of the series so they could keep it a running gag.
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteactually, mister this clever fellow has made a much more touching theory compare to your cynical view
http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=spike&order=5&offset=24#/d4ip06v
@Worsh
ReplyDeleteor it could have been like this

@Nimbus the Unicorn
ReplyDeletesimple it could be cause of this

or this?

Yup, you got it. :P
I think Rarity is perfectly aware how Spike feels, but he IS a baby dragon and she is a grown pony. @XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteI probably should have noticed Sai posted the same thing three times...
Thank you!
I'm going to abuse this now...
@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteThese are the kind of things everypony should do to help the others!
How in Equestria do you manage to run this place and stay afloat in college? My hat is off to you. I can't keep my email clear even without a bunch of crazy ponies having the address.
ReplyDeleteAt the part where Pinkie is throwing the cakes at Spike, listen to the music.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or does it sound similar to James Horner's Combat Drop from the movie Aliens?
Who here noticed that the background music at the start of the episode was extremely similar to that of Disney's-Fantasia-The Sorcerer's Apprentice?
ReplyDeleteYay for 1080! Now I'm just waiting for that downloadable version to be posted on Ponyarchive.
ReplyDeleteWow...here's hoping Spike never forgets that lesson. Full-grown Spike = scary. O_o;;;
ReplyDelete@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteXyro,
1080p resolution is great, but why was the framerate cut down from 30FPS to 24FPS? The resulting judder is, well, kind of awful.
Maybe I'm more sensitive to this than others, but the jerky animation gives me a headache.
@Sketch Scribbles
ReplyDeleteRarity.
@Pyre-Vulpimorph
ReplyDeleteThere's actually a logical answer to that!
@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteI see.
@UnknownRemember the first two episodes of Season 1? Yeah, if they forgave Luna, they'll forgive Spike.
ReplyDelete
