Now before you all freak out, take this in stride. Their primary purpose was to host full downloads of the episodes. These are something Hasbro releases usually a day later on their iTunes page. The letter did include a request to take everything down (Including the Pinkie Pie image :p), but the actual torrents and Multi-upload links may have been the main reasoning behind it.
As more information on the extent of this pops up, we will continue to report on it. For now though, it looks like iTunes is the best place to get the actual episode files without running into legal issues. They did actually fix the color fading for season two, so it really isn't a bad alternative, and a good way to support the show for those of you that aren't into the toys / don't have The Hub.
Note: People from Ponyarchive have stated that they will not be taking the site down.

First! and nuts oh well.
ReplyDeleteWill we still see the youtube streams when the episode airs?
ReplyDeleteGrab your torches
ReplyDeleteOF course...
ReplyDeleteObviously, this is the supposed anti-privacy bill about to take action. Now, I'm against torrents and everything, but...sigh.
ReplyDeleteOh no!
ReplyDelete@Link
ReplyDeleteWoooah there! put those torches down!
I watch all the episodes online or on the hub anyway...
ReplyDeletePeople, remember to love and tolerate here, I'm expecting a lot of angry posts in the next few seconds, but remember, Hasbro brought us this brilliance. Don't turn right around and hate hasbro for this, because they can stop, they can stop the entire series, they can end it right now.
ReplyDeleteThey brought us brilliance, don't let this turn you all around.
THE END IS NEIGH!! D:
ReplyDeleteDude....this is war. Figuretivly speaking. Thats just my opinion Don't hate me.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww no :(
ReplyDeleteNow that is out of my system, it is a shame this happened. Now I will have to get a new ipod to watch pony. At least it is close to Christmas.
ReplyDeletelets not freak out....everyone panic!
ReplyDeleteI don't like this. I blame the US by default.
ReplyDeleteWhat, Kaden1991 said. Still, though sad news. Oh well, I still love you Hasbro, and I think you're wonderful.
ReplyDeleteBUT I SHALL LOVE AND TOLERATE THE SITUATION! For it courses through my veins and makes me who I am and what I stand for!!!
ReplyDeleteAw shucks.
ReplyDeleteMake sure you chill out and view this with a level head. Reactionary decisions solve nothing, and make us lose sight of who we are.
ReplyDeleteNoooooooo D:
ReplyDeleteEuropeans can't buy the new episodes off iTunes, and if all the episodes on Youtube will be taken down there's no way to watch it anymore.
Buck this...
>implying this will end up meaning anything in the long run.
ReplyDeletebut I hate iTunes...Not even pony's will get me to install it
ReplyDeleteEVER
Hopefully I can still watch them on youtube
A shame it happened, but not too surprising. The downloads are likely the only reason for it, and I doubt Hasbro will try to shut down the streams or youtube mirrors.
ReplyDeleteiTunes did not fix the color fading. It is better, but it is not fixed, so I will continue to recolor them.
ReplyDeleteHere is my google doc with mirrors of my videos that ponyarchive put up:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TTs4PNjJ8C6i9fMWPU7htty_RGzkUN4vF2sYwbDdxiM/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1
~Bags
Uhh ... so does this mean that no more episodes on youtube? Because if it does - then buck this.
ReplyDeleteLawyers gonna law.
ReplyDeletehay hasbro, How soon will the DVDs be out?
ReplyDeleteI was just there this morning downloading the color-corrected season 1 eps, and was literally thinking to myself at the time how amazing it was that this site hadn't been hit with legal threats.
ReplyDeleteAh, well. All good things, as they say.
*cough*youtubedownloader*cough*
ReplyDeleteI can't help but think that some people will start freaking out. It may be just a one-off thing, so let's just see where this goes.
ReplyDelete@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteNote: it's a WIP as im having computer problems and I dont have excess up yet
Its that f*cking PROTECT IP bill...if it passes...the internet will be forever changed....
ReplyDeleteHell this might start violent revolution lol
I'd hate if the episodes were taken off YouTube. Of course it's all fine and dandy for those people who can watch the show on TV... some of us don't have The Hub.
ReplyDeleteFor the uninitiated ... how does it work with iTunes? Do I get to keep episodes on my drive or something?
ReplyDelete@DooDawDay Yep, I guess nothing really changes then.
ReplyDelete@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteI just bookmarked your doc – I assume you'll be updating it as the season progresses?
Grr. Not everypony wants to give Apple money just to watch ponies. I'd gladly pay Hasbro, but Apple is never getting one penny from me.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope they don't go after youtube. That would literally be the end of ponies for me. I guess there's always the Hub website, actually. But whatever.
Actually, I guess I'm cool with Hasbro trying to stop torrents. So long as I can get ponies through my computer somehow, I'll live. (I've never actually touched the torrents, myself.)
There are going to be so many freak-out posts before I finish this. Love and tolerance, everypony. That includes Hasbro, mind you.
Once something is put online, you can't wipe it out. It's up…
ReplyDeleteFOR-EV-EER
Awwww, that is very very unfortunate. Especially for those of us too poor to afford to buy them all individually. I guess it was only a matter of time though. And it's not like they are in the wrong to ask them to stop either of course. I can understand them wanting them to take it down. By offering free downloads of all the epsidoes, even in high resolutions, it's cutting into their profits a little. There's still Youtube to watch them on I suppose.
ReplyDeleteYarr harr Fiddly Dee, Do what you want cause a pirate is free...
ReplyDelete@DooDawDay
ReplyDeleteYoutubedownloader would give you an inferior version that's been through Youtube's encoding process. The torrents that were put up on Ponyarchive were generally the source video, meaning higher quality. If you're cool with inferior video quality with a bunch of artifacts, among other things, I suppose that would be a way to go though.
awww man :<
ReplyDelete*sees post has sad Applejack image*
ReplyDelete*clicks post*
*image is now Twilight Sparkle*
...
I don't even...
Well, that sucks. Ah well, could have been worse.
ReplyDeleteProtectip hasn't even passed guys, this was illegal to begin with :p
ReplyDeleteWhat? I can't keep ripping off the show I'm supposed to be a fan of? I'll have to actually support it?! WHAT GIVES!
ReplyDelete@Marshall
ReplyDeleteYup. I was about to get excess up, but I can't get my main pc to boot up.
Or the bios to work.
Guh...This is a bad omen if I've ever seen it...
ReplyDeleteMeh, never used that site anyway. It'll be neigh impossible to quash internet eps if they ever do give it a serious try, so I'm not worried.
ReplyDeleteOh, so THAT ONE BILL is to blame for this?
ReplyDeleteWell then.
Time to start hitting up lobbyists...
Seriously though, if the episodes are taken off of Youtube I'm going to be exceptionally angry. Some of us aren't capable of buying an i-Touch, much less WILLING, and plenty of people don't have access to i-Tunes. Hell, I only get three channels on my TV, one of them being the Espanol channel and another being Fox. No way for me to watch the show except Youtube.
Curses.
Only a matter of time...
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't start taking down the episodes on Youtube
ReplyDeleteHmm, this is a problem. Only by downloading the episodes to an external hard drive am I able to take them anywhere with me, and Itunes would keep them trapped within it's own program instead of creating a file. Unless you use 3rd party software to extract it I guess. And there's always keepvid, but I'm not sure the best quality will be available. This is a shame.
ReplyDeleteI for one, have no problems with this.
ReplyDeleteAs an Australian brony, this is stupid. Sure, I didn't use Pony Archive anyways (I prefer MP4), but if you want us to buy the show off itunes, first can you MAKE IT AVAILABLE PLEASE. Otherwise, you're just going to cut off large amounts of the fandom.
ReplyDeleteBesides, itunes isn't some kind of messiah. If you use apple yes, but windows has problems with it. Limiting your distribution pool also limits your customers, in a way.
Any confirmation on whether it was Hasbro or not who made the C&D? I'm assuming that it is. Whilst I don't think it is the brightest of ideas, I can at least see why they're doing it.

>Implying the torrents will actually die.
ReplyDeleteAlso, folks, the PonyArchive is not YouTube. This is most likely due to the fact that the episodes they SELL (for an admittedly-expensive $4/ep) are being put up for free [watermark-free at that]. I doubt the YouTube videos are coming down. Plus torrents will fester on forever. On top of that, other sites will come in. The End of Ponies this ain't folks.
While I respect Hasbro and fully understand the cease and desist, it still sucks. Also, I would much rather buy DVD's than use Itunes.
ReplyDeleteAlso there's always something like this every now and then. If it causes a panic, it'll shortly die down and then status quo will be restored. Mark my words.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I don't know half of what was just said here.....torrents? Are those the guns that mount to walls or something? Anyway, as long as this doesn't effect live streaming of the show and uploading episodes onto YouTube I don't think I have a problem with it. But I hope no pony over reacts to this and makes things worse. P.S. I love the AppleJack pic, in an emotional way.
ReplyDeleteChill out everypony, this shouldn't affect the YouTube videos and/or channels in any way.
ReplyDeleteIf you really want to have a DL'd copy of the episode, then there is iTunes (as much as I hate it) or worst case scenario, ripping it off YouTube.
@Sethisto So much of this
ReplyDeleteAnd there is always the problem with funds... More money spent on Itunes (if I had any) means less on other pony things, such as merchandise.
ReplyDeleteSurely this is the end of all life as we know it. Soon darkness will blot out all the sun and stars in the sky, and we will all be tortured for eternity.
ReplyDeleteBecause you just know that a cease and desist letter to a single site will topple all the other endless ways to pirate media.
While this may or may not be legit, the key thing here is to NOT freak out about this and start acting entitled and pissy about it. Don't flood people's e-mail boxes with this, or sent letters to Hasbro for (possibly) doing something they have the right to do. If PonyArchive truly shuts down, then that's a shame, but until there's actual, tangible consequences from this.
I'm not expecting everyone to be cheery or laid back about it, all I'm saying is to try and act like rational adults here.
@Sethisto WELL THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM.
ReplyDelete@Sethisto: I see you're on freak-out watch for this post.
ReplyDeleteCan't blame you.
News is news, and even bronies are susceptible to overreacting.
@everypony:
Stop freaking out and let poor Seth get on with his life!
*sigh* It's only a matter of time before YouTube cracks down full force. I can see a lot of fans getting shut out all together if those online sources dry up and if iTunes doesn't offer the episodes in their location. Celestia help us if that IP bill goes through. I understand supporting a show like this by paying a few dollars per episode, but the bill is a whole nother can of worms i'd rather not open and express my distaste on the money/greed issues that are most likely fueling it.
ReplyDeleteGuess I better put some "hay hits the fan" funds to the side for an iTunes season pass, if the episodes no longer stay on youtube long enough to watch. Or unless Hasbro would like to tell us of any plans to release an actual DVD/BluRay season set.
And it doesn't work with the Itunes account I have becuase I set my location as something odd for something specific a long time ago since I only made one so I could use a gift card I was given. (nor will it let me change)
ReplyDeleteI don't really need to have them downloaded though, was nice for when my internet did not feel like cooperating.
So here is their response about the letter:
ReplyDeleteHi
Thanks for your consern. Since we are merely spreading friendship and
magic we feel that we're protected by princess Celestia herself.
Also, we are not based in the US - so US law does not apply to us.
Please feel free to download the episodes from our website in order to
learn about accepting, friendship and happyness too.
Have a nice one :)
What about us Australians?
ReplyDeleteAlso, you know you don't need to have an iPod to use iTunes right? It's a free program that works on Mac and PC.
ReplyDelete@John
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. I like storing episodes on my computer, not just having to re-download them every time I watch. Plus most shows don't get on iTunes Australia, so how the hell are we supposed to see shows without suffering through advertisements or paying out the ears on the 25% chance a show makes it to Australia?
i have to say, it's fairly pointless, someone will put up some version somewhere.
ReplyDeletethe internet is a very big place, they can't ever stop all of it
am i the only one thinking that this means the DVDs are coming out soon?
ReplyDeleteDoes iTunes only offer episodes to people in America? Because I've been trying to find those episodes in the iTunes store and I can't find them. I'd gladly throw money at Hasbro for episodes if I could find them.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the end of the world, guys!
ReplyDeleteFirst off: ProtectIP/SOPA hasn't been passed. Believe me, we would've heard about it if either of them had. They're only at the stage most bills introduced to congress don't even survive through.
Second: Hasbro has already shown that they don't care about us posting videos on YouTube. Why would they start now?
Third: There are probably other places.
Guys- just show your support and purchase them on iTunes. I'm going to as soon as I get enough money.
ReplyDelete@Shingo Eeyup...
ReplyDelete@Shingo
ReplyDeleteSeems that way, Only shows up when I load the USA store.
If its due to the fact they use torrents, then I can say fair enough. So long as they don't touch the youtube streams then I'm ok with it.
ReplyDeleteBut if they go after youtube it will make me very sad. Here in the UK it is quite literally the only way I can access episodes.
Now honestly, the undeniable fact of the matter is, this is Hasbro's intellectual property and they have 100% full rights to do whatever they feel is right to protect their actual content.
ReplyDeleteWe really have 0 right to complain, even when they left us alone for this long, we're still not owed anything.
You might not like this outcome, but you have to admit that it's an outcome you have to accept when it comes down.
This has nothing to do with SOPA. These episodes are not being used for review or fair-use purposes.
The episodes, are quite frankly, uploaded for full, free viewing and are essentially, for all intents and purposes, stolen and streamed for free. Which, by mere definition, is still strictly piracy, all things considered, and we are technically wrong for doing it.
The only response that we, as fans, really are entitled to have at this point is basically "Well, damn. They caught us. Guess free episodes are over."
also >implying Ponyarchive has been taken down yet.
ReplyDeleteI notice the color fade on Applejack in the Mare-do-well episode did anyone else.
ReplyDeleteIf the Ponyarchive does get shutdown don't we have a right to argue our case
This could potentially be a very crappy next vew hours/days/weeks while we wait to see if the youtube vidoes get taken down. I for one am gunna be screwed until season two is up on Treehouse but....
ReplyDeleteWait! Is this going to happen to EqD or PonyArchive I'm confused..
ReplyDeleteWhy do people think they need an iPod Touch or iPhone or iPad to buy and watch the episodes? You just need a computer and iTunes. However you watch your ponies now, you could do it with the legit iTunes eps.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfortunate that you can't always buy things outside the US, though.
ah yes also if you think this has something to do with SOPA (which is btw a terrible bill) then you have NO understanding of how Copyright law works.
ReplyDelete@Sethisto As much as I agree, the chance of those episodes being taken down still saddens me greatly. It's like being told that everything I know and love is a lie and my dreams will never come true.
ReplyDelete@Sephirot277
ReplyDeleteJust Ponyarchive.
I'd like to see that email. Make sure it's not just trolls.
ReplyDeleteYou're a machine, Bags.
ReplyDelete~Buddy Vox
@Slytherin Psst it was illegal in the first place.
ReplyDeleteGood riddance. I feel bad for those running Ponyarchive who are affected, but Hasbro should have done this a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteTo those making a fuss about YouTube: YouTube and illegal downloads of episodes are totally different things. With illegal downloads, you can rip the episodes onto DVDs, share them with your friends, ect. In the eyes of a large company, it's like iTunes for free... there's no good that can come of it for the parent company. Most people who download the streams? Well, they're not going to buy the episodes from iTunes, you can assume.*
Many people, like me, watch the episodes on YouTube and buy the episodes on iTunes as well. Why? Because you can only watch the YouTube episodes with internet! And don't get me started with the millions of other reasons YouTune episodes =/= episode downloads...
That said, Hasbro COULD go after the YouTube versions. But why jump to that conclusion? It's a slippery slope argument that helps no one.
*I know some people can't use iTunes for some reason. That's okay, but Hasbro isn't going to tailor all their plans to suit those who are unable to use iTunes. And people who don't use iTunes because they dislike Apple: That's a choice! Suggesting that Hasbro cater to you because-you-hate-Apple instead of looking out for their own profit is both entitled and unfair.
@Big Love
ReplyDeleteI know, right? I don't think it is wrong of Hasbro to do this, but I certainly think it will be of great inconvenience to me as well as many others.
Just as long as they don't forbid steaming episode online, I'm fine.
ReplyDeleteSome dude will eventually upload the episode on youtube and BAM!.
Well, the more difficult the content is to access, the fewer people will access it and the less exposure it will get. I'm never going to watch a version of the show with commercials, so, unless i'm unique, MLP is going to gradually lose its adult audience.
ReplyDeleteiTunes? Oh come on! I hate Apple, for their stupid customer service (long story), I never want to go back to them for what they did to me! Is there any other better alternative?
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they don't kill the livestreams and YouTube uploads, because that will poke a giant hole in the online community. Pretty sure I don't get the Hub, and even if I did, I'd rather my whole family NOT know I watched a show for little girls on a regular basis.
ReplyDelete@Seth the color fading was a file issue? I always figured it was an itunes bug.
ReplyDeleteOk... Im calm im calm... NOOOOOO FREAK OUT TIME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
ReplyDeletenah jk... they do this stuff all the time... they got to get with the times i guess
You know, i completely see the reasoning behind this...but god damn it...
ReplyDeleteKinda shit for us outside of the US, Where iTunes doesn't have the series on it's TV series listings.
ReplyDeleteApple won't get a single shiny red cent from me. They can kiss my ass. iTunes is garbage. I'll fly my Jolly Roger until the day I die!
ReplyDeleteI watch on the Hub.
ReplyDeleteI rewatch on Youtube.
I don't have room on my computer to actually download.
So for now, I'm fine.
@Matoro
ReplyDeleteGet the Hub or hope at least some remnant of the show is available for free streaming online.
also >implying that if Ponyarchive goes down 3 more sites won't spring up in it's place.
ReplyDeletehell >implying that there aren't already other sites to download all this stuff.
Never even heard of that website. I'm not too worried.
ReplyDelete@forgotten sin Thanks! Much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
ReplyDelete@ultraspacemobile
ReplyDeleteBut..but...
GYROBOWL!
also Lol at all the Apple hating hipsters.
ReplyDeleteI remember when Apple WAS the hipster thing.
@Phantom240
ReplyDeleteI too pirate absolutely everything- it's a lot more fun knowing you received what you wanted for free by being more witty than the original distributors, isn't it?
@bestpony
ReplyDeleteJust get out. You "omg pirate so bad" wanna-be hero types are just plain sickening. "Oh look, I've got disposable income falling out of my hindquarters, let me rub it in everyone's face." When most of us DO have the money to support the things we like, we spend it. When we have to choose our bills and food for our family first, that's what we've got to do. But ignoring mental and emotional stimulation is likewise unhealthy. So we do what we do, and that's no one's business but ours.
In any case, blockheads aside... what does Hasbro think they're doing? This isn't going to drum up support or profits for them at all, just decrease them. The more people who their product gets spread to, the more people who have the money to spend on it will do so. It's so simple that I'm surprised their legal suit monkies didn't tell them that. By restricting access, the growth of the fanbase becomes limited, meaning word and interest doesn't reach as many paying customers as it was going to, decreasing potential sales.
It's not like a physical object, where if someone obtains it without pay, you lose out on what it cost to make it. With a digital 'item', it can be spawned a trillion times with no cost, meaning they lose exactly squat, just 'potential' sales that are highly subject in the use of that word.
can you use itunes vids on a non apple device, like a plain old phone?
ReplyDeleteIs this bad news for the community? Yes, but it's not the end of the world. Let's make do with what we still have, which is plenty. And I would advise against trying to start something like this up again. Keep in mind, Hasbro has been very good to us. We don't want to piss them off.
ReplyDeleteIf they don't go for YouTube too: Fine by me.
ReplyDeleteIf they do go for YouTube too: I'm gonna get mad. I understand that they have the right to do that, but it would be annoying because I live in a country where there's no Hub, MLP episodes are not available on iTunes, and plus, our MLP dubbing is hellish late (episode 13 just aired). So, basically, I'm cut short of MLP.
Dailymotion is still an option.
ReplyDeleteP.S: Likewise, I'd like to point out also, that this is not in any way, shape or form, any indication that they have any plans for a DVD.
ReplyDeleteEven if iTunes was not an option (which it still is, and should still be appreciated even if you don't like iTunes), and there was no other option to watch the episodes, as much as it does suck and you might be deprived the show, it's really Hasbro's judgement to make, because the show is owned by them.
The action doesn't "mean" anything, nor does it mean that DVD's are coming, or should be coming any more than they already are. It simply means that Hasbro doesn't want their own owned content streamed unofficially.
Just feel the need to bring up common sense, here as a counter-point to the irrational anger towards Hasbro that I know is coming. It's their show and their business.
We might not like it (and I will even say that I don't like this turn of events either, as I do not have The Hub and have limited access to MLP other than Youtube), but we really have to abide by the decicion.
Also, do NOT associate this with SOPA. SOPA is a completely different matter entirely. SOPA is about legislating harsh personal PENALTIES for offenses that do not necessarily constitute piracy and confusing fair-use with it.
Keep calm and carry on.
ReplyDeleteDo not fear, there will be other sites and streams.
@Mojo
ReplyDeleteApple is still considered hip- just in the higher-classes. Apple products are ridiculously priced meaning that during this worldwide economic crisis, Apple products will be increasingly difficult to obtain.
HASBRO.
ReplyDeleteGIVE MY MY DVD's DAMMIT.
Only thing I'm surprised about is it took them this long to do a C&D.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as Season 1 was announced on iTunes, I saw it coming. Doesn't really affect me as I get HUB, just not in 1080p which I really like the show in that format.
its all understandable, im surprised that the site went on for as long as it did. im just thankfull that they let the episodes on youtube stay up. sure wish they had the hub on basic cable though
ReplyDelete@archiveit
ReplyDeleteAmen. A-fucking-men.
Everybody refresh! Appearently they are not taking the site down.
ReplyDeleteHi! So, uh, I'm a PonyArchive admin. I just sent an email to Seth, and in case he decides to not post it, I figured I'd put it here:
ReplyDeleteHey there Seth! Or Cereal or Phoe or Tek I guess
I just felt I should write in with an update on what's going on. I've been
an admin on the site for a few months now, my tasks have primarily been
managing donations as well as managing some videos on the site. I've
decided to leave PonyArchive due to differences of opinion on how to react
to this; personally, I think keeping up a good relationship between Hasbro
and the fanbase is more important than keeping the site up, while the two
founders of the site have decided that they're gonna keep going despite the
takedown notice.
My own personal stance on this is that I can see where Hasbro is coming
from, with DVDs being released and the show up on iTunes. On one hand, I'm
pretty sure they're gaining more from PonyArchive than they're losing (Lord
knows I've bought more than one or two toys since coming onboard), but on
the other hand, it's their copyright and if they want the site down, then I
think that's their decision to make. This is why I've decided to leave the
site.
Epic brohoof and much love,
simonAJ from PonyArchive
how ironic, i just started download of them 10 min's before you posted this.
ReplyDeleteAnd I believe King of Smash is correct. While the SOPA might not be related to this particular incident, if it passes, there will be large-scale violence.
ReplyDeleteLOL'd when I read their response
ReplyDeletehttp://bronynews.com/article/pony-archive-jeopardy-their-response
Ugh this is not the news I was hoping for :(
ReplyDeleteAs convenient as ponyarchive is, there's really not much on their side here. It is Hasbro's property and they are promoting downloading it for free (I can see the itunes rips as being what really annoyed them). It's not eternal night, it's not the end of ponies, just a hint to be a touch more discreet.
ReplyDeleteI think this might be a precursor to the SOPA voting starting tomorrow. I only sent two emails to my senator, but I hope to God, Celestia, Luna, and whoever the new alicorn is (I forget who she right now) that it does not pass. I still do not have the Hub, and the only way I can see the new episodes is via download.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, 30 mins in and already past the 100 comments mark. That's quite the reaction time, peeps. As for the actual thing, well... You gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.
ReplyDeleteIt would help if MLP FiM was available for ITunes download in Canada, we need to fix this!
ReplyDeleteI think everypony has a good point, on both sides. I'm a poor college student though, and although I can download them from youtube It was nice to have someone collect a bunch of links for use by all. I will be sad to see it go, if it does eventually. Unfortunately SOPA is up for a vote tonight. Let's hope that the House has enough sense in them not to pass it
ReplyDeleteThey were probably pushed into issuing a CnD on behalf of iTunes. Since they likely had a licensing agreement with iTunes, they would be obligated to take down this illegal competition to protect iTune's interests.
ReplyDeleteAs for watching it on the HUB, I'm not going to pay 80 bucks a month for the cheapest cable package that has the HUB just to watch MLP. I'm sorry but it's not happening, and there certainly isn't anything else good on (for the most part).
At the same time, I am not a fans of iTunes due to their DRM method, if I want to watch my episode on a device that isn't Apple or doesn't run iTunes? I'm out of luck.
I'd love a way to support the show more directly. I'd gladly buy the episodes directly from HUB.com or pay a monthly fee to subscribe to a streaming version of HUB.
@afek
ReplyDeleteYou are certainly a respectable Brony- thanks for the heads up.
@Everyone saying 'Just buy the damn episodes whiners -_-'
ReplyDeleteNot everyone lives in America. For some people, we have no choice BUT to 'pirate' the episodes. When Hasbro takes them down, we basically have no more ponies. I understand perfectly that Hasbro has every right to take them down, but it's just extremely upsetting that many people won't be able to watch ponies anymore, and you guys just assume everyone has access to that iTunes stuff and label us as 'whiners'.
Just saying, put yourselves in other peoples' shoes for once :|
My toenails are too long...
ReplyDeleteNo need to panic everypony stay calm this will eventually be dealt with.
ReplyDelete@Phantom240
ReplyDeleteThat's funny as hell, but now we're screwed.
@Kayriel
ReplyDeleteI would be super upset if this were happening to youtube. I don't have disposable income falling out of my hindquarters, but I still feel that we should be supportive of Hasbro protecting their pockets.
I'm not certain taking down episode downloads is "restricting access" to the show. The only way this hurts Hasbro is if enough people get upset about it or if less people have quality downloads to make PMVs from. If this was Hasbro going after youtube, I'd completely agree with all of your points. But saying that removing Ponyarchive's downloads (while still not touching youtube) hurts the show's popularity... I'm not certain it does.
That said, I do apologize for being so "RWAR" in my other comment. I commented right after reading some other comments in this thread, and it made me a little more abrasive than I should have been.
I had a feeling that Pony Archive would end up being shut down.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too bothered though, because there are multiple ways to get one's pony fix. And it is impossible to kill every possible source.
They're based in Sweden. The states can't do a damn thing to them.
ReplyDelete@Mrguyman
ReplyDeleteThat is an issue, isn't it? I'm moving to France soon, so this will likely affect me in some way- my suggestion is to hope for the best. I would personally stock up on all the previous episodes and try to stream any new episodes that happen to be released every Saturday at approximately 10:00 A:M EST.
I'm glad that Ponyarchive was only the hosting site. This won't stop people from seeding the torrents, which is good, because I just started torrenting season 2 to bring with me on vacation.
ReplyDeleteEh, I just catch it on the Hub or I just wait for YouTube
ReplyDeleteBut if any one wants an army for hire, The Steel Empire does do mercenary work!
I don't see what the big deal is?
ReplyDeleteBut does anyone know if the eps are avalible on itunes in new zealand?
I don't see any issue with the HUB/Hasbro leaving it to stay. Although most people I know end up watching it on youtube anyways, rather than downloading it. Besides, if it weren't on Youtube, I probably wouldn't have even known much or anything about the show, and would have just let it go by unnoticed. If Hasbro would actually RELEASE a physical DVD/Blu-ray for each season, that would be AMAZING, and I'd definitely put my money fourth into getting it. In the meantime, I have 5 mlp figurines of my own, and bought my niece a nice brush-able Pinkie Pie toy. I also wear a couple pony shirts to help spread the word of ponies, love and tolerance. Taking down the show off the internet (for free and downloadable) isn't good marketing from what I can tell. I just hope they aren't dumb enough to take it off Youtube.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, with SOPA set to try and pass tomorrow, I REALLY hope it doesn't since it affects me for things I look into on the internet (nostalgia critic, mlpfim, pmvs, anime, etc.), and censoring any of that would be no good for any of us. I know the Ponyarchive issue has nothing to do with SOPA, but it's still a similar issue. I still think SOPA is too retarded to pass, but the US isn't known to be that smart when it comes to making decisions either. -.-
Forgive me if I was/am stating the obvious but this just sucks hopefully it wont get any worse than this at least and youtube will remain intact.
ReplyDelete@Mattatatta Those are some great points, Mattatatta.
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with this, so long as they make a DVD set soon, with more than 2 episodes! I don't want to have to deal with all the hassle of itunes, I want my physical copy of Season One, in a pretty little box.
ReplyDelete@Phantom240
ReplyDeleteAll this freaking out and it turns out PonyArchive isn't even located in America. Good luck then, Hasbro Lawyers!
This will probably turn out like the Pirate Bay C&D incident(s): the legal team will issue lots of letters, the infringing site will laugh at them and change servers a couple of times, then nothing will happen.
I personally think that if it wasn't for sites like those that promote the adult fanbase, this show quite possibly couldn't have made it to the 15th episode.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't phase me that much, there are always ways to get things legitimately or not.
ReplyDeleteHowever, with Protect-IP and SOPA, ACTA; any of those hollywood-made internet censorship bills, ponies -will- die out, regardless of whether or not Hasbro is cool with us hosting the full episodes on Youtube.
Those bills will be the death of freedom the entire world over, and I don't mean freedom to be an internet pirate. I mean entire websites going down because of one person doing something the acts say they can't, and -everyone- suffering as a result.
Bronys assemble!
ReplyDeleteEverypony, keep calm and FREAK OUT!!!
ReplyDeleteOr just do what I do and go get a youtube downloader.
@Jebediah Oldenheimer
ReplyDeleteAnd that most certainly includes Youtube.
I'd be fine with this if iTunes actually LET PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE USA BUY THE EPISODES - GAH!
ReplyDeleteOkay, everyone: Keep Calm, and Brony on. Also, it sort of IS illegal. Also, there is always Youtube. Or recording it on TV and then transferring it over, but that's just me. Funny enough, I don't have the Hub, so... yeah.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Earth.
ReplyDeleteWhere green pieces of paper are more important
than making people happy. :/
So now they are not taking it down?
ReplyDeleteWhat!
Ditsy is not happy about this.... and yet she still Loves her Creators. I'm Perfectly fine if PonyArchive can use the file uploading and just get rid of the torrents. I've been real picky about my Pony Vids. I prefer the MKV's over the MP4's. The MKV's are just cleaner looking compared the jagged lines in anything round and the Youtube and Itunes versions. That's just me. Plus the MKV files are easier to re-encode even though it may take longer. MP4's just crash and error when trying to encode files.
ReplyDelete**breathes** Love and Tolerate for Hasbro.... Love... and... Tolerate... **pop** Ok, I'm better now. Now to try my hand at drawing for the Charity thingy. Never Drawn before.... and Definitely not on the computer.
I wasn't even aware of this whole SOPA thing going on in the US. Well fuck, if it passes, bronies will be royally screwed, or not?
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with some people thinking this'll deter new people? No one new is gonna want to download a 3/4ths of a gig file just to try it.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to post an exert from an article I just read.
ReplyDelete"In fact, SOPA and its companion Senate bill, Protect IP, have splintered the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's preeminent business lobby. In October, Internet portal Yahoo publicly withdrew from the Chamber -- an extremely rare move for a big U.S. business. Google lobbyists tell HuffPost they "wouldn't be surprised" if the leading search giant soon followed Yahoo out the door.
The opposition has succeeded in slowing legislative momentum. Sources in Congress and on K Street now say that Senate is unlikely to vote on its measure by the end of the year. And the bill's prospects become much slimmer in 2012, an election year in which members will spend much more time away from the Hill. "
you can find the article here- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/14/sopa-protect-ip_n_1140180.html
As for Pony Archive's response: they better be out of the US. lol. Still that was a great response.
OPINIONS
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the way ponyarchive.org is handling this. Sorta agree with afek here...
Essentially giving Hasbro the finger seems like a bad plan. :/
I'm pretty sure we can get moar pony elsewhere, after all, I've never used pony archives.
ReplyDeleteWhile i concur with hasbro doing its dirty laundry, it's up to them how much they want to give the fandom a 'free share' of the show. For example, I'm a mexican Brony and I watch the show on youtube or livestreams, the show is now being transmitted here but we're not even on Sonic Rainboom.
I don't use apple, let alone iTunes. Even if I do, the only way to get money to spend in there is to go and buy a card for iTunes or spend money in a credit card that 1 in every 1000 persons can.
It's unfair because it would be forcing (in the worst of cases) me and everypony outside of the US to use iTunes and download the episodes from there. But it still, Hasbro's property
@John This 110% I got no idea how I legally support this show without being 6 months behind on episodes.
ReplyDelete@Fluttershy Lover Torrents are files that that are almost impossible to take down while downloading episodes fast and free of viruses.
Sadly, this was bound to happen eventually. It doesn't make it any less painful though.
ReplyDeleteI just wish there was another legitimate way to get the episodes (like a proper DVD set *shakefist*) so that we weren't stuck with iTunes. Youtube is nice, but the quality does get affected by their encoding process, and they're not very portable that way.
The fact that ponyarchive refuses to cease and desist deeply saddens me.
ReplyDeleteI think that bronies shouldnt feel entitled to get this show for free. While piracy is inevitable, I think because these guys have been approached by HASBRO THEMSELVES, it would probably be safer just to leave it to thepiratebay or something. We're lucky that hasbro has been so lax with us so far. I think these guys shouldnt push their luck or they may ruin it for everyone.
While watching the Hub or downloading off iTunes may be fine for AMERICANS, I live in Australia and therefore cannot view it on the Hub (neither the Hub, nor pony airs here). On top of that, iTunes doesn't allow Australians to download the episodes because they are region locked. If You tube gets taken down that's the end of pony for me.
ReplyDelete@Phantom240
ReplyDeletefucking LOL @ that reply.
as long as there is still hd youtube streams im good.
ReplyDelete@afek
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, and applaud your response to the situation. Hasbro and Studio B have been very good to this community so far, and I hope PA's response doesn't anger them to the point of souring that relationship
First thing I did with my graduation money was to buy the entire first season on iTunes (a damn fine decision). I probably will never buy a toy (I tried once, but the girls toys aisle scared me. -.- ) but I will always buy the shows to show my support.
ReplyDelete@PonyBoi
ReplyDeleteYeah, luckily I have every S1 episode in SD and S2 in HD, so I'll have SOMETHING to watch while I wait for the Cataclysmic Events of Ponykind to unfold.
Well this sucks. But at the same time, it was to be expected. Ponyarchive should obey the cease and desist order. I don't want their refusal to do so to make things even worse.
ReplyDeleteThe best situation (legally speaking) would be for ponyarchive to use this opportunity to see if they can work out some agreement with Hasbro. Probably by not offering the episodes DRM-free at full quality.
@bestpony
ReplyDeleteApology accepted. It's nice to see you're not exactly one of the mallow-brained sheep I've gotten so used to having to fend off.
Still, while I perfectly understand the decision is up to them in my logic mind, my ethical mind tells me it's punishing their fans and supporters, which is never a good return for admiration. Also likely to hurt future business, as I work under the assumption that PonyArchive won't be the last.
Frankly, I'd be willing to bet only ten percent of the fanbase (a very generous figure, given my observations) actually found ponies through the 'legal' channels, and without those of us who hadn't, more than half of -that- number would still be doing whatever they were doing before they became bronies, and Hasbro would not be benefiting from their hard-earned cash.
Wel I'm not getting the episodes off of iTunes. As much I would love to support the creators and all that, I refuse to use anything branded by Apple, even if the fate of the universe depended on it.
ReplyDelete:/
Damnit, and I was just going to go download some episodes in case the SOPA passes tomorrow (Don't have any other way to watch if YouTube gets taken down, as I have no TV,) and I get on here and see this. T-T
ReplyDeleteSoooo... anyone know where to get some pony episodes besides ripping them from YouTube? I'm not going to give Apple my money.
I still don't completely understand the bill for me to form an appropriate reaction to it. Aren't there websites that kind of implicitly enact certain stanzas of it anyway?
ReplyDelete@TheBlankedFile
ReplyDeleteYou can always buy toys off the internet. I got two sets off of the Toys R Us site. Never even had to look at the girl's toys aisle.
Wow.
ReplyDeleteWell, to the innumerable other online sharing sites I go! Huzzah!
... But I would buy a DVD set if they came out with that.
We don't even get MLP:FiM on iTunes here in Canada, at least not in my province. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteUm... I geolocated ponyarchive.org's servers. (173.245.60.103, 199.27.135.34)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm getting that they're in California.
I know geolocation is not perfect, but it usually gets the continent right.
I sure hope they're not bluffing about their location. That would be very, very bad for them.
No adult non-brony with any subtle curiosity towards the show would want to pay money just to try watching a show made for little girls... at least, other than parents wanting to buy for their daughters or something.
ReplyDeleteAgree with non confrontation approach to the situation. The last thing we want is to make Hasbro go after everything with copyright infringement. I mean just watching it online is not that big of a deal. IF and BIG IF they do go after youtube and other streaming sites we could always try to persuade the production team to host it somewhere...so everypony just keep calm and enjoy what you have
ReplyDeleteWish they would just release a complete DVD set. I'd be all over that.
ReplyDeleteMy only problem with this right now is the lack of a DVD release and the fact that FiM is only available in the US iTunes Store.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think that to some extent this is Apple's lawyers being Apple. They charge rediculus prices for content that they then make as hard to use as possible. Also? A lot of that 2.99 per episode goes to apple. If hasburo put up the show themselves I bet 1. it would be cheaper, and 2. it would be drm free (or at least have less of it.) Finally I honestly don't have ~$70 to blow on a show that (while awesome) just can't really compare to steam games on sale for pure amount of time it will keep me entertained. Finally (really) This whole brony thing (started and still is) primarily a YouTube/online thing. I doubt that a large portion of us (maybe 5-7% tops) go on to buy the show on itunes. I think that (honestly) most fans are not enthusiastic enough to spend money if there is a pay barier set up.
ReplyDeleteHere's the email if anyone wants to see it:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.klistrain.se/visa/Orf6Z10H
Okie dokie.
ReplyDeleteThere will always be other places to download pony.
Ultimately this isn't a huge deal for anyone. If, however, Hasbro goes after the episodes on youtube, they're only shooting themselves in the foot. This is a merchandise driven show, not one that makes much money off the show itself.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteiTunes is not a good alternative because it ties you to iTunes. QED.
ReplyDeleteget them off youtube using savevid, geniuses
ReplyDeleteI would have very less problem with this if I could buy the episodes straight from Hasbro.
ReplyDelete**COUGH**DVD**COUGH**
iTunes has been nothing but trouble.
PonyArchive has been the best source for High Quality episodes outside of watching them when they air.
I can understand this. I expect Hasbro will not do anything about the Youtube episodes, though. If they do, it would be like shooting themselves in the foot.
ReplyDeleteFrom Hasbro's point of view, the MLP shows themselves have always been extra long ads for their toys. MLPs internet popularity is a massive, and free, ad. I could understand removing pirate episodes while they have iTunes episodes for sale. However, removing their episodes from Youtube would be like taking down the ad before even finding a way to profit from it's attention.
With that in mind, Hasbro has done almost nothing to profit from all the Brony attention it has been getting. There are far more lucrative avenues for them to explore before they ought to consider C&D methods. Consider the internet, aiming this at Youtube would benefit Hasbro very little in the short term, and probably hurt them more in the long term. (It's not like you can stop pirating on the internet, and Bronies are a pretty tech-savvy user base.)
all i can say is they signed a death warrant by refusing to take it down. Hasbro can use their legal department to force the site down and if they wanted to (which they should if they wont take it down) find and criminalize those who owned the site.
ReplyDelete@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that your videos have been taken down so often. It must suck having to keep reuploading them. We bronies (or at least I!) really appreciate the work you do.
I've heard that it's just parasprites reporting videos and not Hasbro...do you know if it was Hasbro themselves who keep hitting you with takedowns? Because that would make me quite sad, indeed.
