Hasbro has upgraded their "Castle Creator" game to yet another version called "Card Creator". This one has lots of random assets from Hearths Warming Eve in it, including the one above. The best part? The filename is "DH_Definitely_Canon". Hasbro is best team.

The backgrounds are all pretty cool... love the Canterlot ones, as always. I think AJ looks pretty sporty there in her cap and scarf... very stylish for her. Twilight has the nerdiest winter accessory in giant earmuffs, of couse. Even though she's not really wearing less than most of them, Fluttershy looks like she should be cold in that get-up. Must be the color scheme.

You can still choose which category of things you want, but they don't do anything. All the other buttons work too, but...you can't add stuff!

Sounds to me like a minor level flash programmer is having a bit of trolling fun with pro-Derpy crowd.
ReplyDeleteUntil I see an official name spoken in an episode or a toy with the name on it, I'm sticking with Ditzy-Doo. I just don't think Hasbro would assign such a derogatory name to a character in a program that's still designed to be suitable for kids.

Ditzy on the other hand... http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ditzy is a real word and has insulting connotations to it.
That said, Ditzy and Derpy are both names that Lauren Faust has signed off on. Derpy came before Ditzy however, and no even semi-official source has listed her as Ditzy (as far as I know) where as every image of her on the website and games sites HAVE been listed as either Derpy or DH.
That's not to say that EITHER name is truely official... until either some official merchandise comes out or her name is mentioned on screen in direct reference to her we can only guess at best, and throw insults back and forth the worst.

"True, many people in the MLP fandom use it as a term of endearment, but that doesn't automatically make it acceptable to the rest of the world. The N-word is also used as a term of endearment by alot of people, but if you were to release a toy with the name of 'N-word Hooves' you would get lynched by the end of it's release day.
Our fandom's enthusiasm for her has accomplished the impossible by getting a beloved background character elevated to a scripted status, but that doesn't mean we should be willfully ignorant. A simple google search on the definition of 'Derp' turned up 100's of results, including these:
-a stoner or a retard
-The word that describes a particularly
retarded face: A retarded smile, and the
eyes pointing in different directions.

We're a great fandom following a magnificent show; we have novel quality fan-fic writers, dj's and rappers that produce better quality music than the stagnant music industry, and hundreds of amazing artists. We've broken the target demographic, got the fan-chosen name of DJ Pon3 canonized, managed to convince the studio to elevate Ditzy to a scripted status, and we're close to getting the same with Dr. Whooves.
Do we really need to push to have a socially risqué title given to a character just to have a reference to an age old insult that's turned into an internet meme?

They have even used it at Studio B and Hasbro for many many months. It's been official ever since Lauren said she preferred that name to Ditzy. lol I didn't some people were still unclear on that.

ReplyDeleteExcept you're wrong. She was NOT called Ditzy... an off-screen pegasus was called Ditzy Doo. A name Faust was quoted as saying she thought she'd use if Derpy was ever named on screen... Except she's never been shown on screen and Faust no longer works on the show. Many offscreen sources have labeled her Derpy AND Faust originally called her Derpy at a fan auction drawing of her.
Cinnamon: Again... Derp(y) is not a word. The N word is a word. You're arguing semantics for a word that doesn't exist and is not a part of the lexicon of the VAST majority of people in the english speaking world.
Of the people who DO use the 'word' the meaning differs greatly. This is NOT the same as using a word that has an agreed definition, especially not one that is as racially offensive as the N word.

ReplyDeleteWhile there have been references to the Ditzy/Derpy debate for sometime, Mother Hasbro hasn't stepped up and said "This cross-eyed pony is "Insert Name Here," which is why the debate still carries on.
There was an interview with an animator where she mentions the name Derpy, but then uses the name Ditzy a few minutes later. And that whole interview was a bit of a mess anyhow; poor girl never got to finish a sentence most of the time. (I'm still grateful to the pod-caster's effort at getting her and attempting the interview.)
And then the reddit article from (I believe) Jayson Theissen where he states that Derpy is Studio B's pet name for her, but he then states that Applejack is comprised of the remnants of a fallen star from the Alpha Quadrant. And that Octavia was playing a cello instead of an upright bass because it's a classier instrument. So, I don't think that would really count as canon material; more just him having a little internet fun with the bronies. Much akin to the flash programmer of these hub website games.
(Was that reddit from Jayson or from someone else related to the show? It's been awhile and I can no longer locate it in my favorites folder.)
@RinkyBoo, I do believe that would be the best route to go, if Mother Hasbro were to step up and officiate anything. Ditzy-Doo with the nickname of Derpy, much the way the mane 6 have nicknames for each other.
Regardless of the peoples naming preferences, I'm very happy the hub has included our favorite background pony in these games. I'm sure everyone can be unanimously happy about that.
I don't mind Ditzy Doo or Derpy Hooves. But i use (and probably will continue to use) the former more, just like how people still call DJ-Pon3 Vinyl Scratch, even though a hub commercial is probably far more canonical than random file names on pictures and flash.

Chances are, Derpy/Ditzy will NEVER have an on-screen name given, so why can't we use both and be happy? It's not like nopony knows what you're referring to when you say "Ditzy" or "Derpy".

ReplyDeleteWell, I do know some people "on the inside" and they also refer to her as "Derpy" now. As I've heard the name Derpy has pretty much replaced any prior names that may have been associated with her with a lot of people. Note that name "Ditzy" was just used in passing as someone else mentioned. It's a good chance that it wasn't even meant for her. Unless the name is blatantly said to that character, you can't really identify that name as belonging to that particular character. Even if they are given a name, there are so many recolors of the same models in the show, some with even the same cutie marks, that it can still be hard to say for sure that is indeed that character. The only thing that makes Derpy stand out obviously, are her eyes. While it's true, she hasn't been referred to yet as "Derpy" on the show itself, it's a safe bet that that will be her name, at least in the background as reference to her with many. Honesty, it probably will never be mentioned in the show itself. Or at most, at or near the end of the show's running as a last shout out. I will also note that if you listen, Octavia's instrument is indeed a cello. That wasn't just messing around with the fans. ;) They do have some fun with the fans, I know that. But some of the things mixed in are true too. :P

ReplyDeleteThe drawing you're referring to was a newly created doodle included in a sale with two other drawings from the 'MLP Bible', the original concept book created by Lauren, Jayson, and a few others. Upon receiving the three drawings, the purchaser asked Lauren if they could sell the 3rd drawing separately and use the funds for charity. She gave the ok and they then sold it via ebay, labeling the image of the Ditzy/Derpy as Derpy.jpg. It was the auctioneer that gave it that title, not Lauren.
And your argument about the word not being found on one dictionary site, thereby automatically nullifying its negative connotations just doesn't make sense. The same site has no entry for term (God, I'm sorry for having to use this people. It's just for a point, please don't hate me) "Raghead". Does that magically make it ok to use? Go down to your local mosque on the next holy day and start calling people that; see how far it gets you, or if you even make it out alive.

ReplyDeleteYet again. Ditzy Doo at the time of Winter Wrap-up wasn't used to refer to the wall-eyed pony we know as Derpy. At that stage of the development for the show, the pegasus pony with bubbles for her cutie mark was just a generic BG filler pony. "Ditzy Doo" was just some unseen pony. The fandom simply equated her description as a clumsy featherbrain to Derpy, hence thinking Ditzy = Derpy.
Later, Faust came along and said they MIGHT use Derpy's body for Ditzy if they ever wanted to have Ditzy Doo onscreen. At this stage though, I doubt we will ever even HEAR the name Ditzy again, let alone see her onscreen.
Main point is that at the time of the episode, Ditzy WAS NOT Derpy
So... if the card creator team is not really closely related to FIM team, maybe the whole Derpy issue and her filename is the cause of this whole "flash not opening" stuff? I mean they saw that someone from the flash team tried to enforce his idea and shut the thing down for further explanation/checking etc?

ReplyDeleteIt is still broken. I went ahead and emailed Hasbro regarding the issue, and I explained to them that it's a widespread issue, and it impacts multiple web browsers. I hope they fix this before Christmas.
