I think we already know who won. I'm still siding with Fancy Pants this time around. The most interesting pony in the world clearly deserved this victory. Who else could attract a perfect ten like Fleur? Not Big Mac, that's for sure!

VastaKustutaJust a theory, but I'm guessing since Big Mac's had more exposure, that's sort of why he won. I sided with Fancy Pants since he was so accepting of Rarity and the gang as they were. Yes, it was just one episode, but I'd say that spoke volumes of him. Just my interpretation. Can't wait for the next poll.

VastaKustutato be honest. i hope none of these scenes happen in the show. the thing that makes the fan characters so special is that studio b stays away from them by not making them a major part of the show. had they written a scene for derpy or lyra, the magic of the characters would sort of be lost. what makes them fan characters is how the FANS interpret the personalities.
VastaKustutakeep in mind that i'm not criticizing studio b for including the derpy cameos. they are a admirable tip of the hat to the fans that is executed in a professional manner. but the reason her inclusions to the show stay special is that the writers leave room for fan speculation. THAT is what maintains derpy hooves a fan character. including her as a scripted character runs the major risk of disappointment.
a fandom isn't a fandom if fans are the writers of the show.

This show will always be about and revolve around the main 6, we fell in love with this show not because of the BG stuff, but because they got the important stuff right.
They're not gonna change the show and suddenly make BG ponies really important, making them part of the plot or anything. That would be changing the show, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We loved the show before the makers knew of bronies, and I don't want them to change it.
So these BG ponies are never gonna get any decent lines or important dialogue. All they will get is more of what Bon Bon got, mismatched voice acting and no consistent characterisation. Which is exactly what you would expect for a BG character, as they can't hire the same actor/actress every time and build continuity with such an unimportant (relative to the mane 6) character. If they started giving BG ponies lines then the makers would receive plenty of unfounded criticism about how they didn't do the BG pony justice and what not, but you can't blame them for not having the time and energy to do so, as this show is about the mane 6, not about Derpy/Lyra/Octavia/Scratch/etc.
I don't want Derpy to get a throw away line, I like the way Derpy can be an effective present from the makers to the bronies. Doing where's Waldo with Derpy is something bronies appreciate, and I think that is exactly where they should leave her.
I also don't want Octavia/Scratch to get lines for a similar reason. Throw away lines would give practically no character development for these BG ponies, essentially accomplishing nothing. We've built up plenty of fan stuff around them, quite a bit of it shipping, which would never end up in the show. I think Octavia/Scratch are perfect examples of characters who are almost 100% fan made, and should stay that way. The show can't devote enough screen time to them to give any serious character development, so it should focus on what we already love it for, the mane 6. I like Octavia and Scratch being put in the type of scenes they get now, doing their jobs, Octavia playing her instrument and Scratch doing DJ work.
Today's episode had Lyra and Bon Bon in the BG, talking and being interrupted by Derpy. I think that is about right for what these BG ponies should get. I don't want them to do a half hearted attempt at more, the show isn't about them, and shouldn't try to be.
Carrot Top, oh my! I'd love if they'd grab her for two to three joint episodes and make a story including her. She always reminds me of an innkeeper and as such, she should once be the wheel propelling the act forward.
VastaKustutaLet's make an example without any real content, just the barebones. She could make a deal of some sort with Applejack. That leads to them embarking on a journey - which comes to a halt due to grave trouble. Then all they need to do is play each character's cards fine, maybe seperate them from time to time; get them into conflicts, make them solve conflicts; let them be themselves - and allow Carrot Top's plot line to merge with the temporary problem of the mane 6.

VastaKustuta1) I think that removing Ditzy from the "moment of total hilarity/WTFery" we've all grown to love her being in, even just for a scene, would kinda spoil everything special about her. Especially if she had dialogue. (And especially if BaldDumboRat wasn't the one delivering said dialogue. I don't care if it's official or not, she's Ditzy's voice to me, plain and simple.)
2) As much as I like Ditzy, Octavia's simply my favorite background pony. Can't put my finger on why, she just...is.
Not surprised Derpy's in the lead anyway. Besides, she wasn't the one who said muffins anyway. It was Colgate.

I pretty much agree with you, especially with your last paragraph. Even so, after careful consideration of what the poll question was asking, I ended up voting for Derpy.
Why would I vote for Derpy when I don't want any definite characterizations for the background ponies? Partly because I fear that Derpy's drifting towards an in-show characterization, and it's not a flattering one. I'd love to see a short scene, preferably without dialog, that shows Derpy's not the village idiot. Klutzy, accident-prone, and a little featherbrained, yes, but not actually stupid. Such a scene would be tricky to pull off, and I don't expect it to happen, but in a perfect world I'd like to see it.
I may actually be in the minority here, but I think Derpy is a character that's meant to be silent (save the "muffin" that may or may not be her's alone). She's a master of the visual gag, right alongside the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Abbott & Costello and Harpo Marx.

As has been voiced by others already (family stuff kept me busy all day long), there are some ponies that could be ruined, at least for our fanish ways, by simply speaking. Then again, they did such an amazingly awesome job with Luna that I personally have no fears. But I can understand where others are coming from when they say that.
VastaKustutaI'm voting for Lyra (making Phoe possibly happy), for the weird reason that while she's not my favorite of the bunch (possibly making Phoe unhappy), I think she the pony out of those listed who would benefit the most from having a 20 second long scene giving us a little bit of insight into her. That harp cutie mark, does she actually play an instrument? Does she instead sing a lot, like the blind bag toy info card says? Both? I think it would be cool to have her performing for some friends, in an innocent way that could still be construed as her serenading Bon Bon for all the shippers out there.
