This is actually pretty enlightening to Celestia's and Twilight's relationship. Original canon for the show listed our favorite adorkable nerd as the only one to actually receive the dragon hatching test. I guess this is the reason Spike is the only dragon running around in pony civilization.
And Celestia is supposed to be mysterious, I guess we sort of came to that conclusion though! Hopefully we get to see a bit more of her in the future.

ReplyDeleteMagic, that's all I can say.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of something..........but what??
ReplyDelete@Celestia oh, you.....
ReplyDeleteInteresting!
ReplyDeleteWow. These canon back stories seem to get more and more interesting. Not to mention complicated. So it appears there's more to Princess Celestia abilities than would appear. At least to me.
ReplyDeleteFaust is Lord...
ReplyDeletePretty fascinating.
ReplyDeleteNot much to say here. That's basically what I thought the initial idea was.
ReplyDeleteI love these things.
ReplyDeleteShould we consider this to be canon?
But I thought when Twilight was explaining how she got her cutie mark, she commented that hatching a dragon's egg was a the basic entrance exam? Or did she simply assume that?
ReplyDeleteWell, that was informative.
ReplyDelete@RavensDagger
ReplyDeleteConsidering it's directly from the creator...
@RavensDagger
ReplyDeleteThe community probably will, but Ms. Faust has said that her extraneous ideas are not canon since she doesn't work on the show anymore.
Celestia is a chessmaster. This much has always been known.
ReplyDeleteVery cool when Lauren fills in on some of her ideas though, always insightful.
@RavensDagger Lauren Faust is no longer with the show, so the Hub could steer it any way they want to. She was, however the creator of it, and the direction of the show hasn't changed much......so i dunnoo
ReplyDelete@Niko
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen you around before...do you like bowling?
I still prefer the idea that others may have taken the test, but were never expected to actually hatch the egg... Not that they all failed, but rather they were judged on their efforts and not the success of the results, as dragon eggs suck up magic or are magically resistant or something.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm certainly not going to argue with the creator of the show. Good to know there aren't a ton of baby dragons off-screen though.
So, Trollestia is canon?
ReplyDeleteI always thought that was a little suspect. What, like the magic school for tiny little fillies has a bunch of dragon eggs just laying around? And nopony's got a problem with that?
ReplyDeleteAs long as the topic isn't revisted in the show, what Lauren Faust says effectively goes.
ReplyDeleteSo, Trollestia is canon?
ReplyDeleteCelestia sent me to the Moon twice
ReplyDeleteI know all her secrets
Everyone has their own headcanon. It all comes down to how much you want it to be based off of actual info. I say that the test was merely mental. Twi didn't have to hatch the egg. Celestia probably knew Twilight as an applicant, but that's all.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tia's powers, the writers don't know how to think far enough ahead for that.
@amkirby10 I dunno about canon, but definitely cannon
ReplyDeleteCelestia is an alicorn who single-hoofidly ran the entirety of Equestria for 1000 years. She also showed some awesome powers in Lesson Zero.
ReplyDelete"Then you'll be fired...out of a cannon. Into the sun." Best line ever.
ReplyDeleteShe senced that Twilight was the one that would bring balance to the force.
ReplyDeletehttp://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WordOfGod
ReplyDelete^ Please read this if you think Lauren's opinions and ideas on the show are potential canon.
That's more or less what we're getting when she answers questions on MLP:FiM. And any of it can easily be erased by any canon presented later on the show.
Is it just me or does Lauren describe Celestia a lot like Dumbledore? "smart so she guesses right a lot of the time" sounds a lot like Dumbledore in the last few HP books
ReplyDeleteCelestia, through Word of God, seems so much more amazing than the show would allow.
ReplyDeleteI wish Lauren would make a webcomic or something to detail the lore to us. I would like to maybe even see parts of the 'bible'.
I will add one more thing, That was an entrance exam but not the entrance exam.
ReplyDeleteThere doesn't have to be just one, could change depending on the applicant.
@Marine726 Took a look at the episode right now. All Twilight said was that she had to pass an entrance exam...oh darn it. @Celestia beat me to it. What she said :(
ReplyDeleteJust one of several types if exams? That's more like it. A dragon egg for every single applicant makes as much sense as a three-headed dog sleeping in the middle of a school full of delicious children.
ReplyDeleteSo can we assume that entrance exams are unique to the potential student? Awesome!
ReplyDelete@amkirby10
ReplyDeleteDude, Trollestia's been canon since "A Bird in the Hoof," if not earlier.
Well, my theory was that each member of the school hatches a different animal, who then becomes their assistant. I wouldn't exactly call all of what Faust says 'canon', but I'm not gonna contradict it either. For now, I'ma go with "DIFFERENT TESTS FOR DIFFERENT PONIES BASED ON PREDICTED POTENTIAL" Time to rework the old fanfic-in-my-brain!
ReplyDeleteSo I guess the image macros of Celestia looking up with giant-Spike sitcking out of the tower with "IT IS TIME.." are canon?
ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDelete"she is smart so she guesses right ALOT"
I find being in the first 10 comments extremely satisfying for some reason.
ReplyDeletelol so basically~ Celestia = Albus Dumbledore!! ^_^ yay~
ReplyDeleteNow that we know she is supposed to be unknown in many ways. Can we stop assuming she is some trolling goddess who enjoys molesting filles now?
ReplyDeleteThe Fanon for this series is creepy 99% of the time.
You must be forgetting the lost 13th Commandment. 'The sun goddess works in mysterious ways.' Nothing creepier than that. That's why you don't anger her. Ever.
ReplyDeleteForever...
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteWhat are you hiding from us? I know you're up to something, don't try to deny it!
Also, I'm applying to your school soon, can ya give me any hints on what my entrance exam might be? *nervous laugh* Not that I need the help or anything, just curious...
On an unrelated note: HAH! I knew it!
And the weather tonight is cloudy with a chance of meatballs...
@Lord Pimpington
ReplyDeleteYes of course i'm up to something, I hid Luna's Hearths Warming presents, how did you guess?
@Lord Pimpington
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you later when she's gone
@Vurtax
ReplyDeleteThose persona's are attributed to her in jest. At least by most people.
I think.
Can I just say I'm touched? I think it's so sweet that you can have such a close relationship with your sister after you locked her in a prison on the moon for a thousand years. It's really touching.
ReplyDelete@Harwick
ReplyDeleteI liked the idea that the test was similar to the Kobayashi Maru. Applicants are expected to fail. It is their approach and reaction to failure which is judged. Twilight actually PASSING made Celestia take notice.
On the other hand, I also thought of an alternate theory in which Celestia had some knowledge of Twilight Sparkle before hand and set the test up special for her to see if she was "the one." It is strange the Celestia just HAPPENED to be in the vicinity when Twilight's test was given.
It seems that Faust's idea was closer to my alternate theory.
@the invincible
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Luna didn't find the thing I did to get back
I kinda want to see this in show, have an episode where we at least get a peek at the royal dynamic between the two. Right now our interpretations range from well meaning monarch, grand chess-master of everything ever, Pony Jesus, and/or Discord's number two troll, and just about everything in between. Luna we at least have a bearing on, but Celestia is a blank slate.
ReplyDelete@Jimperator
ReplyDeleteI really only hold what actually happens in the show as canon. Many of Lauren Faust's ideas were adjusted as the episodes were being written, even when she was directly overseeing things. She herself says that her explanations can't be held as canon.
Her comments can, however, be seen as very plausible possibilities for things that aren't fully explored in the show yet. They may not end up being the truth, but it is something interesting to think about until a canon explanation is provided.
@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteCan I tell you a secret? You're my favorite. Know why? You responded to my comment. I still like everybody, but now you're my favorite. Don't tell the others.
How about she's a Prospit dreamer?
ReplyDelete@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteNah, I'm good. I just wanted to get the ruler of Equestria to call me 'Lord'. Life = complete.
@Celestia
Disregard previous statement. And please don't send me to the moon! I swear I wasn't spying! Just conducting... uh... research! For science!
How i see it is there was only one egg and no other filly could hatch the egg. and frankly Celestia is thousands of years old, she probably may seem omniscient for her experiences.
ReplyDeleteTrollestia is cannon...
ReplyDeleteThis explains why Celestia was nearby and didn't have a HOLY CARP expression on her face when Spike busted out of the tower roof.
ReplyDeleteCelestia is Gendo Ikari. The Twilight Instrumentality Project will one day be revealed.
ReplyDelete@Shiranai
ReplyDeleteYeah, as stated by all of us in the previous thread, this is a good theory (better than Lauren's, IMO). Lauren's idea isn't ALWAYS the best. After all, she originally had Rarity selling carousel themed tschotschkes and bridles (that looked suspiciously like fetish wear) before Hasbro suggested it be a dress shop.
Well, if this is actually official, then a very important piece of backstory for It Takes a Village is blown outta the water, completely nuked from orbit, gone to meet it's maker, it's off the taint, kicked the bucket, rolled up the red curtain and joined the freaking choir invisible!!
ReplyDeleteTHIS. IS EX. FANON!!
"Well just replace it then."
GAAAHHH!!!
@Flutterfan
ReplyDeleteActually, she's Yui. The parallels are eerie.
@Celestia
ReplyDeleteOh, you have no concept of how devious she can be.
I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to find those presents and I've exhausted every possible hiding place within the palace.
Where have you hidden them Celestia? I've used every finding, divining, tracing and clairvoyance spell I've ever heard of and still nary a trace!
Please Celestia, just a hint?
I'd love to go back an DeviantART to see this myself, but sadly DA is infested with nothing but viruses inside their ads which prevents me from going on there ever again.
ReplyDelete:'(
I miss reading fanfics there.
I thought it was interesting.
ReplyDeleteMysterious Alicorn Do Well...
ReplyDeleteNope, that didn't work.
@Luna
ReplyDeleteWhy would I do that and spoil all the fun you're having? perhaps you'll get lucky but otherwise patience is key.
I wonder how you'll find easter if I were to hide some silly chocolate eggs?
@Nickvivious, get adblock or something to that effect then that problem is gone.
So, wait, she almost ruined the life of one overachieving pony just on a hunch? I mean, without the trigger event, this would have crushed her soul.
ReplyDeletewould love to know more about Twilight's past, how she is so special and why her magic is so strong ... i need answers!
ReplyDeletewould love to know more about Twilight's past, how she is so special and why her magic is so strong ... i need answers!
ReplyDeleteLauren basically pulled a Dumbledore with Celestia D8
ReplyDeleteHaving Celestia just guess and have her hunch correct is pretty much Dumbledore :D
Dumbledore had theories and hunches that ended up to be correct, and so, makes Celestia pretty much the Dumbledore of Equestria with a phoenix in the mix :)
Can you post a link to the originating comment? After some digging, I found it: http://comments.deviantart.com/4/1603670/2324683110
ReplyDeleteIn other words, Celestia is freakin' Dumbledore.
ReplyDeleteWoha! o.O
ReplyDeleteI wouldn´t wonder if there´s some kind of stoneage old prophecy from the alicorn princesses that there will be a pony who hatches a dragon egg and this pony will change with other ponies the world.
Or some stuff. :P
So if Celestia is Dumbledore, does that mean she... you know. Isn't straight?
ReplyDeleteI still prefer the idea of the Egg being a treasured heirloom of the school used to gauge how young unicorns approach a difficult problem using magic because they have a really complex magical shielding system or somesuch. Then Twilight broke it.
ReplyDeleteOr another possible idea I heard that I really like: The egg was never an egg at all. It was a beachball painted purple and green. Trying to hatch it was pointless. Twilight literally recreated it into a dragon egg when she went magical-overlordy.
I presume twilight getting to hatch spike would be considered "fate".
ReplyDeleteThis also probably means we'll never get an episode dedicated to Celestia most likely: =/
For some reason "The are things she knows, things she has a mere sense for and things she can't see at all" gives me a very Galadriel vibe.
ReplyDeleteWait, so basically...Celestia's been doing Batman Gambit?
ReplyDeletethat explains the Defeat of NMM, the Dragon business, and the Gala!
that also explains why she was so upset about Twilight going crazy, because she never saw that one coming.
and Spike...those lame modest gifts Twilight gave him every year was to keep his greed in check!!!
She never knew, she just thought they were the most probable.
That Mare!
Congratulations! You have broken "It takes a village". Again.
ReplyDeleteWell, at this point I don't even care anymore.
Lauren Faust's word is not Word of God. It is Word of Dante. It's still cool when she answers questions like this.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like to imagine that as a few others have said, the Dragon Egg Test is supposed to be failed. I like the idea particularly that dragon eggs are magic sponges, and that the actual hatching would be something nopony ever expected to work.
This also makes Celestia's hunches a little more recoverable when they fail; she could've already had the egg 'on tap' from previous 'is this the magic one?' tests.
Awesome! My speculation was correct then.
ReplyDelete@Flutterfan Oh man Evangelion's episodes was about mentally unsound teens whose screams destroyed my last set of headphones.
ReplyDeleteThe polar opposite of MLP:FIM.
"There are things she knows, things she has a mare sense for, and things she can't see at all."
ReplyDeleteSo Celestia has her own version of Pinkie Sense huh, cool. :D
Does this mean that she engineered the Sonic Rainboom...or was that just fate?
ReplyDeleteHrm...it seems that Celestia is pretty harsh when she needs to be--remember her face when she saw Spike crash through the roof? Almost like she was expecting it...
Well, you don't get to be a goddess and not know some things, I guess.
Everyone, sing with me!
ReplyDelete♪ ♫ "And I say,

Taija... and friends...
ReplyDeleteMy theory is that Celestia introduced Twilight's parents to each other knowing their magical potential would produce a very powerful unicorn.
Being immortal, no telling how many generations back she started. Sometime after Luna was banished?
This fits in with what I've been saying for a while now, that Princess Celestia has an expanded "Pinkie sense" and has been using it to shape events. This explains why her guidance of Twilight in season 1 ep 1 was so cryptic (make friends) and why she almost never intervenes personally (notable exception: Lesson Zero). Even in Lesson Zero, she could have predicted that Twilight would miss a report eventually, giving her the opportunity to strengthen the Magic of friendship in the rest of the mane six by having them research friendship as well. Going back to season one ep one: unless Princess Celestia could foretell and tweak to future, her sending Twilight to Ponyville to make friends with five potential avatars of the Elements of Harmony in less than 24 hours is a very long shot. 1,000 year old Princesses wouldn't take such a risk unless they were very tired of living.
ReplyDeleteI've said this many times, Celestia needs her own episode.
ReplyDeleteOf course, it makes perfect sense. Celestia used her powers to influence the midichlorein count in the unborn foal to grant her extraordinary prowess in magic. The prophecy always spoke of the one who would bring balance to the Foalce.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting, would be good if they expanded more on Celestia's character with an episode (or two), also explaining a bit more about the history of Equestria. Or maybe the writers would prefer us to speculate.
ReplyDelete"I never wanted to define her abilities, even to myself"
ReplyDeleteOoooh, that's magic writing right here. However, Celestia isn't a main character so that's okay - after all, she never used her mysterious abilities to provide a Deus ex machina ending or some ass pulls.
If anything, I'd like her powers to remain mysterious and shrouded. Because however you polish it, precognition leads to serious logic bombs and unneeded questions.
Then there's the whole "raises sun and moon" thing, which is just another logic bomb if you think about it hard.
It would make the most sense that Celestia used Spike's egg for all the tests, not expecting that anypony could hatch the egg, except for a pony who would be the element of magic.
ReplyDeleteYou speak of the prophecy, your highness. "The One" who will defeat the Maretrix, or restore order among the Elements of Harmony, whichever comes first? You believe it's this... filly?
