ReplyDeleteHonestly, I actually have to give credit to Notch for what his donation did for our pool. While we can say that it was our donation that prompted him to step up his game, it's something of a two way street - his donation most certainly prompted the surge in donations.

It's called Humble Indie Bundle, not Humble Donator Bundle. The devs are the ones that humbly ask for a fair price. The people buying the game are free to brag about what they do. :)

FiM is a TV show, just like any other, and as such people can either enjoy it, or not, even if they can break past the gender barrier that today's popular culture has placed up.

Got no sleep last night due to a painfully swollen foot and ended up here at work around 5am. Pulled up EQD and saw this. My day will now be 100% better. I'm constantly overwhelmed by what the community can do when it pulls together with a common goal in mind. Even all the well-wishers who couldn't donate have their hearts in the right place. Let me remind you that the HumbleBrony Bundle isn't Seth's deal, it's done by someone else. Besides, Notch himself openly challenged us to do better than him. And it worked, the bundle doubled overnight.
Don't take it all so seriously. What's important was that charity won. And we won charity. Go team!
The real winners in all of this are the charities. Whether the HBB group ends up in first or second (or even lower if some other group wants to "beat" them), the fact that it's actually going to help people? That's the best part.

ReplyDeleteI certainly understand your point of view, and the want to keep ourselves kind of grounded instead of getting big-headed is admirable.
You're not wrong for that either, some humility wouldn't be the worst thing in this whole matter.
At the same time, everypony else brings up a good point too. Thanks to EqD being so vocal, a surge has been driven to push us over the top, and as the HBB page states, every donation is 100% good press for bronies and the show that we love.
So, a bit of love and tolerance is needed from everypony, but a bit of celebration is fine too (barring a last minute snipe from Notch!)

ReplyDeleteI fail to see how us bronies patting ourselves on the back, on a site that is viewed by pretty much exclusively bronies, is a bad thing. If we were going out to other sites and posting stuff like, "Hey! We donated X amount of money to charity, what have you guys done?", then yes, that would be wrong.
But that's not what is being done here. All that's going on here is the online equivalent to a sports team, after winning the championship, is gathered in their locker room, whooping it up and celebrating the hard work and honest effort that they put forth to accomplish something great.
So, if you honestly have a problem with people feeling good about doing good, and possibly inspiring others to join in the giving, get out of our locker room... I mean, comment thread.
My hats off to Notch and everyone else that donated. I originally said that we'd forced Notch's hand - now I say that he forced ours, and a jolly good show for him doing so!

I mean, seriously! Can you imagine any other fandom doing something like this? I genuinely believe that this fandom brings the best out in most people, and we have developed new warmth in our hearts to become better people and friends.

Someone claimed to donate about 500 on the HBB site, but I don't think there's a brony here who could donate that much money. I think the most logical conclusion is that there's just a lot of us who put in about twenty dollars or so, or who donated previously but put it more because of Notch's donation and/or promise, who pushed it up so high.

Nearly doubled Notch in the donation pool. Regardless of that, gotta give Notch credit. He incurred the warmth of the Orbital Friendship Cannon and greatly increased the total for charity and developers. This is a day to be proud and of much greater importance than just winning some poll.

Normally I would be proud to see many people pooling for a donation drive, right up until I saw the the words "dominated" and "I bet the internet didn't expect that".
ReplyDeleteThe internet is well aware of Brony's being around and dominating someone is not a form of being humble it is a form of aggressive assertion.
Just thought I'd like to point that out before anyone deicides to shrug off a point I made.
And now we need Notch to donate more and pass us again, so that we donate even more and the charity gets filthy stinking rich on the two of us being unable to back down.

ReplyDeleteNormally I am on the fence about the whole dominate thing , if its a pony related site/poll then as long as we don't over do it I am fine. Its when we expand the domination to other things (which hurts our rep) that I have issues.
ReplyDeleteBut this is for charity and its on our own site , so I see no harm in the over the top celebration as long as it stays here. Its not like the pony haters are gonna troll this site just for stuff to hate us for. They got plenty of made up things for that.
As they say haters gonna hate , but no need to give them free ammo >.<
Now no one can say that obsessing over winning this one wasn't a good thing :p

Dear Princess Celestia, today I learned that if you want people to donate to a good cause you have to bribe them; simply appealing to their good nature alone will only see you through halfway at best.

ReplyDelete@Toksyuryel What you say is very true and kinda sad, after all, but here is how I see it.
ReplyDeleteTrue generosity comes from the heart. And donating money through internet can never be a gesture from the heart, because money and internet are concepts known only to our minds, not our hearts.
So yeah, calling to pure generosity won't be very effective in such a context, because only the mind can hear that call.
Now, if you give the mind a reason to take interest, such as this competition, it may forward the call for generosity to the heart.
And here we see the result...
Indie developers is such a great cause to donate.
ReplyDeleteI don't care so much about this challenge with notch, I have to say, but the fact that we helped a great cause with more than a dozen thousands dollars is unbelievable.
This shows that the Bronies are also a powerful, generous economic force.
I don't think we "beat" notch, lord knows the man could probably 1$ up us without much effort.
ReplyDeleteRather, Notch saw this, did what he did, looked at us with a crooked grin and went "Your move, bronies"
We smiled back, answered his call with gusto. Notch was pretty much "Touché", both knowing all too well the good thing that just happened.
We could do better, it was in us, it just needed the right button to press, and much like rainbowdash standing up for fluttershy, being a 'winner' on top of it all only made doing the right thing all that more rewarding. :)
.....And then pinkiepie materialized out of nowhere, threw everyone a party because kind hearted indie devs and well meaning charities all made money from what just transpired. :D
