Now that I think about it, we should have been doing this from the start. If we want DVD Box sets and more pony... It's probably a good idea to support the official downloads! I'll be announcing the iTunes releases as they come in, though usually its just the following day.
Instead of buying a Big Mac/Ultimate Cheeseburger/taco combo in the future, why not take the money and grab an episode instead? Support both the show, and your health!
Hopefully we can get an alternative to iTunes in the future (I admit, it's not my favorite program in the world), but for now, this is the best legal way to do it for those of us in the USA.
And maybe this will spur Hasbro into releasing something for all you foreign bronies too.

Yes! Finally!
ReplyDeleteAlready have my "copy" of the episode and playing it pretty much on loop.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't eat fast food......often. So yeah, episodes are a far better investment.
ReplyDelete*yay*
ReplyDeleteBuy this rather than the toys. Are you supporting the show or the merchandise?
ReplyDeleteI plan to download both season one and two form iTunes I already downloaded the first episode since it was free I'll download season one first and I might download this weeks episode
ReplyDeleteI've got the season pass for iTunes, so I already have the episode... I just wish I had another choice, since I'm not a big Apple fan. Still, it was worth it to support the ponies!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to support it, but alas, I'm one of those foreigners :( No ponies on my iTunes.
ReplyDelete@DeRockProject
ReplyDeleteWhy not both?
I bought the full season pass a while back, and judging from the email notifications they send out, the episodes usually go up around 20-30 minutes past midnight Pacific time each week.
ReplyDeleteiTunes, Y U NO PONY IN EUROPE?!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I would give them all my money if they let me D:
call me when it's out of the USA and i'll buy it right away :/
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of this, PonyArchive is now .eu instead of .org. So I guess that means someone attempted to shut them down?
ReplyDeleteMy brother and I have been doing this since we became bronies. It just makes sense. give the company money and they'll be more likely to experiment with more ways for us to give them money :p
ReplyDeleteBut I want a Big Mac Ultimate Cheeseburger/Taco combo.....
ReplyDeletei bet they will release the swedish version of mlp in sweden if they are going to =(
ReplyDeleteThe main problem for us Europeans (especially Central Europeans) is that Viacom/ MTV Networks has bought the rights for MLP but according to their Press Relationship only the TV rights. Due to this a iTunes release is almost impossible. Even Hasbro Europe can't do a lot to this (also acc. to their PR), since they only own the videos but NOT the dub audio.
ReplyDelete(TV rights are pretty weird)
So: We Europeans right now, can only import US iTunes Redeem Cards (and thanks to the strong Euro (no objections from britons allowed)) we only pay 39 Euro for the HD season pass.
So (2nd): It would be nice if someone (or Setho) could link a trustworthy Redeem Card Shop which ships worldwide.
I have so little time and money at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThat means I could spend my little money on my little pony for my little time to become more pleasureable... if only we could buy these episodes in germany (countrys outside of the US in general)
But... why on earth (pony) would you want to eat Big Mac? He's so nice.
ReplyDeleteI'm far from a fan of iTunes, that's for sure. But as it stands right now, the $99.98 I've spent on season one and two is currently my only monetary investment into My Little Pony.
ReplyDeleteThe DVDs they're coming out with just aren't doing it for me...if they released it in the vain of anime sets where you could buy the seasons step by step, with consecutive episodes...just knowing I could get the entire season would be enough for me to plunk down some more cash.
C'mon Hasbro...the bronies are the ones with all the money! Punch those numbers into your calculator and you'll get a happy face!
Wtb in EU.
ReplyDeleteI would easily pay $3 per episode if it wasn't iTunes.
ReplyDeleteAnypony know how much Apple gets vs. Hasbro's share when you buy off iTunes? Because if it's anything like music and want to give your money to Hasbro, you might as well not bother with the iTunes downloads. I buy pony merchandise, I've preordered the DVD, I do everything I can to support the show, but I don't think iTunes is a viable way to do that.
ReplyDeleteYep, I'll start buying these once they're 1) Not on iTunes, 2) Still in HD, 3) Not in jumbled out-of-order DVDs.
ReplyDeleteFor now, all I can do to support the show is keep buying toys.
Personally I'm considering just downloading the eps and sending the money straight to Hasbro. Just have to figure out exactly where to send it...
ReplyDeleteI will never infect my computer with iTunes if I can help it. I hate everything Apple because I feel it's made to be used in the way that they want you to use it, and nothing more (This is my opinion, and no you will not be able to convince me otherwise so don't even try. I have used Apple products and I hate them.)
ReplyDeleteI would get the episodes in high definition through an official channel if I could, but those currently do not exist here because I live 80km from the United States border in Canada. Region locking is the worst idea ever in the world of digital distribution.
I am waiting for the DVD (If Shout Factory distributes in Canada, if not I am once again SOL) to make a good faith purchase in the hopes of a blu-Ray box set in the future.
I think i'll download (buy) episodes that truely "touched" me. My complete favorite episodes ones that blew my mind. So OMW to buy This one, Secret of my Excess, Sweet and Elite, and about 5 others!
ReplyDelete@Masquerade
ReplyDeleteBy buying toys we're not supporting the show as much as just buying episodes on iTunes.
Besides, the toys...could be better.
However, I would easily spend 50$ on a complete season 1 DVD, if it was HD, Episodes INORDER, and offered any behind the scenes... And willing to pay 50$ for a DVD is pretty damn good, and I'm sure I'm not the only one willing to flesh that money out (possibly more) for just said DVD.
ReplyDelete@Worsh they will get a mail with money and a letter saying "yeah i downloaded you series wanna fight about it" ^^
ReplyDeleteI got the season pass for season 2. It's been well worth it so far. I hate Apple, but I'm willing to put that aside to support a show I love.
ReplyDeleteThat said, as soon as we get DVDs or BluRays I'm buying those.
itunes is only available for us??
ReplyDeleteI don't mind buying from iTunes. I mind the $3/ep pricetag (or the $50 pricetag for the whole season). Bring it down to DVD season prices and I'll bite. And yeah, I know "first world problems" and all that, but still, they're a tad pricey at this point.
ReplyDeleteiTunes is available to everyone. However, MLP:FIM is region locked to the US (or at least it's not available to us Swedes).
ReplyDeleteI like the idea Seth! Even if you can't get it outside the US it's still nice to support the official releases :D
ReplyDeleteOh you know you want to have a Big Macintosh of your own...
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking of the same Big Mac, right?
I feel bad for all the Bronies outside the States without a proper way to buy all the episodes. I hope some of them get a way to eventually.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind buying episodes and toys to support both the show itself and the merchandise. Though I'm not one of the more well-off around, so I'm limited in my support.
@Worsh
ReplyDeleteActually this is an idea that might make them pay some attention.
I would be willing to buy them if it wasn't iTunes.
ReplyDeleteI definitely support this idea.
ReplyDeleteFor those bummed by the pricetag: You can save a buck an episode, or 10 bucks on the whole season, by buying the SD (lower-def) episodes instead. Lower price, half the file size (meaning more room for other ponystuff!), and the quality's still better than YouTube's default size.
Options are never a bad thing, after all. :]
But... I want a Big Mac! He's Awesome!
ReplyDeleteSince I'm a dirty foreigner who is undeserving of acquiring copies of the episodes legally, I'll just stick to Youtube and Youtube downloaders if needed.
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteIf anyone from Hasbro's reading this, I'd be very happy to buy an episode on itunes (or similar), were it available in the UK.
Yours,
JMH
If it was anything but itunes, yes I would agree. But I do not support Apple in any way, shape, or form, not even for ponies. So I'm sticking with Youtube and rips. If they release DVD sets, or downloadable episodes on something other than itunes, I'll do it.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the hate for iTunes. After all, it is terribly buggy, especially on windows.
ReplyDeleteIf it were on zune, I'd buy the episodes in a heartbeat.
WTB Zune releases please, I will never trust or support anything apple related.
ReplyDeleteFrom what we hear, Seth, Apple is getting most of the money from iTunes sales.
ReplyDeleteIt's supporting Apple more than it's supporting Hasbro. And a large number of us don't WANT to support money-grubbing Apple.
We need to find some way to directly tell Hasbro that we need a direct-to vendor from them, so they get all of our money.
If it wasn't for the first season being on youtube i would have never watched the first season and become a fan.
ReplyDeleteover in Europe MLP still doesn't have a high profile. Hasbro Have a lot of work to do overall!
Pull your finger out!
it's about time we had some merchandise as well. As in available to buy in high street shops.
ReplyDeleteI can't help feeling they are missing out on their core audience let alone the brony fan base.
Only beef I have with itunes it doesn't work on Linux.. still bought season pass though. Beware of the drm though it won't work if you copy between computers
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Hasbro isn't distributing them directly from their own site. Surely that would be the best way to capture a larger audience? Not to mention that there is the potential for people to buy other merch from Hasbro's website too.
ReplyDeleteWell a nice season 1 blue ray box set would be a godsend for everyone. imagine sonic rainbooms in high res..........
ReplyDelete@Gale Daze
ReplyDeleteApple takes 30% of each sale for applications and (I think?) music. I've been unable to find anything about how they split revenue for TV shows, other than rumors of per-contract price negotiation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same 70/30 split applies.
A lot of people complain that it's supporting Apple more than Hasbro or that you're throwing your money away, but can any of you back that up with any substance?
I'd appreciate it if the ponyarchive folks continue doing their 'not color corrected' version that's not listed. I have paid for both seasons from iTunes, but need to watch 'em over wifi to a PS3 hooked to a home theater, and the DRM iTunes release won't do that. So I need mkv files, and though I've spent money on a program to do that, it wouldn't give me 'direct pass through of both video and 5.1 audio' as an encoding option.
ReplyDeleteSo I've paid Apple, paid Hasbro, paid a third party hacker guy and STILL need the help of ponies to get my episodes properly. Ah, this world of the future...
@ThemsAllTook
ReplyDeleteI talked to an artist who has some of his stuff featured on iTunes. He said he gets completely screwed over by Apple, and regrets putting his stuff up on there. I took his word for it, I seem to remember seeing other stuff to back this up but I'll have to check on that. I suppose it could be different for different artists though, depending on their level of prominence.
I'd follow the "shut up and take my money" policy for this show, if it were available anywhere but iTunes.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Apple does get 35% of each dollar, which is 3 times more than the artist gets after the record label takes their chunk. So it's a combination of Apple and the record label screwing the little guy over. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteI already bought two episodes on iTunes already.
ReplyDeleteNeat. I bought a season pass for season 2 a while ago, so I get the episodes shortly after they come out.
ReplyDeleteSo much hatred for the fact it's on Itunes.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't watch the episodes from Itunes (I prefer the Youtube uploads for some reason) but that hasn't stopped me from buying them anyway as a means of supporting the show.
Boo-Hoo Apple is getting some of my money as well. There's a ton of things Hasbro has done in the past that would make me not want to give them a cent of my money (Transformers Films anyone?), but because it's Pony, you'll just forget that immediately?
Also, to the people claiming "Buying Toys doesn't support the show, it supports the store you buy from".
Well obviously. The stores buy from Hasbro. The more people buy the toys, the more they will think "Huh, these toys are selling well, we need more of them." Thus, they pay Hasbro for more merchandise.
@Gale Daze
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. 35% is indeed more than the 30% for applications, but not exactly ruinous. Without a record label or other intermediary involved, Hasbro should then be getting the full 65% or 70% or however much it is. How much of that gets passed on to DHX Media or Top Draw is anyone's guess, though.
In any case, I'm glad to see the blog calling more attention to this! YouTube is great for getting the episodes on the day they air, but since there's an official paid way to get them, that's my preference after the air date.
I don't like to use iTunes since I don't like the UI and way it tries to do everything, but I have nothing against the store.
ReplyDeleteI mean, I don't see the hate for Apple taking a cut. 30% is a very fair number. I mean that's the exact same cut Valve takes from Steam sales.
Also, realize that Apple taking 30% is a better model then what happens in retail. Buying online and giving 70% to Hasbro may very well give Hasbro more support than buying a physical DVD and giving 40% to Hasbro (with 30% to the disk manufacture, and 30% to retail/shipping fees)
@ThemsAllTook
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify my point here: For music and music only, Apple gets 35 cents to the dollar. For television, I have no idea. I just figured that was the only place we could extrapolate a reasonable conclusion from.
From information I gleaned from here- http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/how-much-do-music-artists-earn-online/ - it looks like Apple takes the most out of competing services for both individual and full album downloads. I don't know what the standard cut is for television sales, but it seems that Apple would also be the worst for that too. But I don't know.
That being said, I'm not a die-hard anti-Apple fanatic. I use my iPod and it works fine. I don't like Apple, but I don't particularly like any of their competitors either. I just want to watch ponies in a way that would send the best possible message to Hasbro.
@Emty
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm just speculating, but I think if Hasbro's toy sale increases, Hasbro would spend more on making the toys. If this iTunes sale increases, Hasbro would spend more on making the show.
But then ya guys say iTunes will just take most of the money or something, so I don't know.
Words cannot express how much I want a Bluray box set of this show.
ReplyDeletePony Archive is still uploading the episodes on the new .eu website. I went there today and they had the 720p Raw HWE up.
ReplyDeleteI did not download it though, because I think Seth is right. If we support the show the legal way, then we will probably convince Hasbro to release entire seasons on DVD for us.
So, I will probably get the iTunes one, then use Bags ffpreset codec to fix the color issues, then play the .mp4 in my mkv video player.
Huzzah.
am in uk, finally did the gift-card thing and bought it.
ReplyDeleteand used requiem with an old version of itunes in a windows vm to decrypt them, so i could put them in my choice of media player (plex, as it happens).
One thing to note: If you use requiem you end up with a decrypted .mp4 file which still contains tags that identify the purchaser. In other words, just like iTunesPlus music files - which have no DRM and can be played on any capable player, but do identify the purchaser in tags. I'm OK with this, as I'm not uploading my decrypted files anywhere, they really are just for format-shifting.
(Yes there are things you can still do to get rid of that identifying information, but that's out of scope for this post.)
So it does basically mean you can just use itunes as a purchasing medium and not be tied down to using it, and apple's stuff, for archival and playback.
BTW to counter some misinformation: even if you don't decrypt and stay within the apple/itunes ecosystem, you are *not* restricted to only play back on one device, unable to move it to other computers. The files themselves are just files and can be copied anywhere. For playback, you can authorize up to five computers, using iTunes. And then iTunes Home Sharing can be used for playback further than that on satellite devices - iOS devices eg: iPad, AppleTV2.
I'd still prefer the bluray. :-)
But the way things stand at the moment, whatever percentage of the revenue gets through Apple to Hasbro (and I wonder how that compares to DVD percentages), I still can't think of a better way to at least *signify* support the *show* and willingness-to-purchase, than to buy the iTunes versions - simply because they *are* complete, and they are the best available now. Even if not perfect.
http://derpyhoovesnews.com/episodes/2/10/
ReplyDeleteReally wish they would release on Amazon, because my laptop doesn't play nice with my old gen HDTV for some reason and I refuse to buy an expensive Apple peripheral for one show.
ReplyDeleteBuying the DVDs in the meantime.
iTunes functionality is a parody in my country. I'll pass. Moreover, iTunes is one of modern cancers of the Internet so I most likely wouldn't download it from there even if it was possible for me.
ReplyDeleteSomebody supply me Lauren Faust's account number - I'll gladly send my money there.
One of the ironies of the situation is that, now I've figured out a process for decrypting itunes purchases, i'm actually more likely to buy more such content in the future, because i know i can do so and it won't be stuck in the apple ghetto while most of my media is in plex.
ReplyDeletewe should support the show but the ppl who are outside of the us, should still get a link to DL the ep for free.
ReplyDeletehttp://derpyhoovesnews.com/episodes/2/10/
Is there really no way to get around the regional block-thingy-whatever on Itunes? Cause i fear that if it gets available in germany it would only be the german dub which is soooooo bad, it murders the show to a slow and painfull death....yeah, it's really that bad.
ReplyDeleteStill going to get the episodes from Pony archive since it's a show and I will then possibly buy the DVD's when they finally arrive in the EU.
ReplyDeletei am a canadian brony and i get the mlp form the us using a cheat from the internet.. wont say where or how but i get my pony share
ReplyDelete@StrangeNoiseHave fun decrypting and adjusting stuff you've paid for. Feels good to be "on the bright side", eh?
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to tell hasbro that Google has a store... and that their releases work on android which would be a double bonus.
ReplyDeleteData point: I have all episodes, both seasons (so far!) on my iPad.
ReplyDeleteApplejack is best pony! ;)
@snowfi6916Don't rape PonyArchive. These guys are great and also... kewl. They have an irc channel and are very helpful there. Donate a few € to them and use torrents provided there.
ReplyDelete@snowfi6916
ReplyDeleteCould somepony please [rovide a link or something to this preset codec that fixes the color issues? My Google-fu is weak today.
Thanks.
I'm liking this idea. Still can't wait for the DVDs though; I like that idea just as much.
ReplyDeleteI was just gonna say that from what I understand the episodes were not available outside the US. Then I read the comments and saw another Swede comment on that they're not available in Sweden.
ReplyDeleteI would pay for legitimate digital copies because this is one of few things I've seen that are actually worth paying for. But as many other commenters here have already said, only if they
1) Are not iTunes
2) Still maintain HD quality
3) American voices (swedish dub is horrible)
4) Available in Sweden. Duh.
So as there aren't a whole lot other options, you resort to torrents (or similar ways).
@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteI was never on the other side to be honest; very much on the Lawful part of the alignment spectrum. :-}
Downloading the rips for free was only ever something I did because there was literally no alternative. Just because I eventually caved and *did* doesn't mean the mucking about necessary to buy from the US iTunes when you're not in the US is at all *acceptable*. It's not, and they really need to sort their arses out about international distribution, somehow.
@Princess Addictia
ReplyDeleteThere is a way. It's just stupid that it's necessary.
I wrote a post with more detail on the how in the comments to the main episode post for this episode; i think it's on the first page of comments.
@Jorlem
ReplyDeletehttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/18184780/My.Little.Pony.Friendship.Is.Magic.ffpreset
You will most likely need to manually set it in filter's properties. For some reason the codec stopped showing for me when I'm playing the series but I started downloading episodes with gamma correction already applied.
So what do we do if we're outside the US :\
ReplyDelete@Princess Addictia
ReplyDeleteHere
@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteI was pretty much referring to the general problem with "legal software" etc.
Take for example games: I generally buy a game, put it on a shelf and then download it via torrents to be able to play without 10.000 of bigger or smaller problems. The Witcher 2 - pirated copy has much better fps on my PC. Funny? At least the game's support guy was laughing.
Any idea why the new episode is #13 in itunes?
ReplyDelete@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteYes. DRM is ultimately self-defeating, and I seriously and absolutely see no moral dilemma in using whatever tools you can find to free content you've legitimately paid for so you can use it.
I also understand the right to do so is protected in EU law (still, despite lobbyists' attempts to change that) under clauses protecting reverse-engineering for interoperability.
So you can use the tools and the skills to a legitimate end, I feel, but I draw the line at using them to actually perpetrate copyright theft. hence, for example, pointing out requiem doesn't strip out the identifying tags, and not saying how to do that.
But not in Canada.
ReplyDeleteNot avaliable in Denmark? Screw that.. Made a fake account and brought a overpriced gift card just so I can support my favorite show.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd make a little contribution here:
ReplyDelete1. I don't support piracy at all, so I'd rather just buy them off iTunes legitimately than risk law enforcement rapping at my door because of torrents.
2. To everyone outside the US, it's not that hard to work around the region lock. All you need to do is to set up a US iTunes account i.e. set your Country as 'United States' during the registration process, and enter a random US address. I use the address of Apple's HQ, as do the rest of my family. After that, simply buy US iTunes gift cards off the wide variety of online dealerships and voila! Ponies (along with a wide variety of good-quality compressed music, Blu-Ray quality movies and shows). As for transferring between computers; 5 computers per account is way more than enough, that's all I can say. Not to mention as many iPads, iPhones or iPods as you want. I'm not an Apple supporter, but you have to admit, their devices are pretty useful when it comes down to it.
So I'd say the iTunes route is pretty much a 'win' situation, at least for me. I get episodes at HD quality, without having to worry about legal issues and whatnot.
Been buying the episodes trough iTunes from the start. Spent over 110 bucks on HD Pony episodes to date. Love having then trough my Apple TV in glorious HD on my 50".
ReplyDeleteit's overstating the case to say itunes HD is as good as bluray; it honestly isn't... but it is perfectly acceptable for most purposes unless you're determined to be fussy.
ReplyDelete@Kayriel
ReplyDeleteYeah, soon as I realized it was barely going to Hasbro, I flipped off the assholes at Apple and moved on to buying toys, the -TRUE- way to support this merchandise-driven show.
Of the five episodes I did buy from iTunes, however, I replaced all five of them with 1080p rips and deleted the color-skewed iTunes versions from my computer. Fuck Apple.
@ElectricZoNe
ReplyDeleteYou, sir or madam, are an electric sheep.
@StrangeNoise
ReplyDelete"The entertainment industry", or whatever we will choose to name it, is being lately on a war trail against us. Have you heard about people in Scandinavia being threatened with letters demanding money after they download a porn movie? The movie was prepared in a special way to spy on those people. It's just one another porn movie on p2p networks but its owners threaten to reveal to local communities that a respected member of their neighborhood was downloading porno movies with asian lesbians... Such spying is illegal and they would fail in court but they know that simple accusation will ruin their victims' lives.
All DRM, copyright warnings and other security measures are extremely expensive and very ineffective. They only hurt people who buy legitimate content. Pirats don't even know that they are there!
I can't understand why we, as the global internet community, tolerate that. Why don't we simply boycott such things like iTunes? It's a step in the direction, nobody wants to follow. Literally nobody.
We could force important changes but even now as the SOPA act is being introduced in USA, nobody seems to care. Damn... What has happened to people? If it was 5 years ago, we would be DDoSing the Pentagon now...
Getting back to Hasbro, they could simply make an online store registered in USA and under common laws of EU. It would grant immediate access to MLP for ~700 million people. No DRM, open formats for both audio and video. Damn, they could even use torrents to distribute it! The cost would be next to nothing and profits would be definitely much better than from iTunes. They just don't care. But who will force them to care?
2am here so good night :)
@goh!
ReplyDeleteIf you lie during registration process or bypass regional limitation, you are a thief according to law. If you bypass anything or provide any false information, you are a thief.
Why should i have to lie to pay for something I can already download from pony arxhive for free?
ReplyDeleteSeriously I'm not giving apple a penny.
If you really want to suport hasbro go to your local family run toy store and buy some offical merchandise. It's really that simple.
ReplyDeleteEveryone wins - execpt apple, which considering their ethics policy in business I can live with.
I bought the season passes on iTunes the instant i learned that it was on there. Also pre ordered the DVD.
ReplyDeleteBoy there are a lot of Apple haters on here tonight. For those that are complaining about the color problems, I watch on my Sony laptop and my iPod Touch, the colors aren't bad to me! Sure, a little streaky but not that bad at all.
ReplyDeleteI find it odd that a show that is produced by a studio in Canada does not have digital distribution rights in Canada...
ReplyDeleteI never fully understood why that was.
@Saerydoth
ReplyDeleteIf you have a legal option to obtain something but you chose the illegal option instead you are a thief, and thieves make Fluttershy cry.
FWIW -To those concerned about Apple getting rich of the iTunes purchases revenue from the ITunes store is just about break even for Apple, they actually make very little from it, enough to cover operations and a small profit. Apple isn't selling media to make a ton of money off the media, they sell it to make buying their hardware products, iPhone, iPad, iPod, AppleTV, etc. more appealing. THAT is where their money comes from by FAR. Purchasing ponies from iTunes does very little for Apples bottom line and as others have pointed out is likely a much better deal than if you buy DVDs.
ReplyDeleteD'awwwww fluttershy is the cutest in that roman type armor :3 .......i'm sorry what was the post about?
ReplyDeleteIf iTunes wasn't basically soft malware along the lines of Adobe, RealPlayer and the like, I wouldn't have uninstalled it years ago and would have happily bought both season passes for FiM.
ReplyDeleteI'm willing to spend a lot of money to support FiM and am a guaranteed customer for DVD sets and the like. But just as I wouldn't willingly infect my computer with a virus, I won't install iTunes, even for MLP.
Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Apple, and think it's a great company. But I also know a lot of great people who I wouldn't want sleeping in my bed or using my toothbrush, and that's basically what iTunes is to me.
I also don't do Facebook for the same reason. My life and my business are my own and no one else's to scrutinize, buy or sell.
Linux user, so no iTunes for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll just keep getting mine the not-so-legit way. Pity too, Hasbro... I really do want to give you my money on this.
As much as I try to avoid paying for stuff I can get for free... this is probably a fairly important thing to spend money on. I know I'm not the only brony without cable, and plenty of shows get cancelled due to bad ratings. Let's try to avoid that, mkay?
ReplyDeleteIf iTunes wasn't so buggy and stopped the download every five minutes only to restart it again, I'd buy many more things from it.
ReplyDeleteI'll just wait until the Blu-Ray comes out.
Buying the DVDs, but sure no way in heck using iTunes. Not going to antagonise people who do but nor will I laud it. Does that still make me a thief? :\
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the Shout! Factory one seems reasonably priced and I hope they release all the episodes eventually.
No U R Foreign :3
ReplyDeleteI would get the episodes from iTunes if
ReplyDeletea) They were avaliable outside of the U.S
b) iTunes didn't hard lock the video format to only work on iDevices, with no way to change it.
I wanna support the show but I don't want to support Itunes. Listening, Hasbro? Dvd boxset with extras, please! Until then, youtube it is.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to support the show and give something back, but in the UK there's nobody to take my money. It's starting to look as though the best option is guerilla purchasing: downloading copies and dropping a bundle of cash through Hasbro UK's office door with an unsigned cover letter explaining why.
ReplyDeleteYeah, in Poland only way to support show is buying toys... they dislike our bits, it seems ^^ I'm not only from Poland (where probably I can't get ponies from iTunes, I'm not sure - didn't checked) but I'm GNU/Linux user and I can't use iTunes... so - I must download from ponyarchive.
ReplyDeleteI want support show but show (or actually iTunes) doesn't support me. :p
Anyways... I support with toys and making show more popular in Poland so I think I'm ok.
Buckin' iTunes don't allow Australian Bronys to get this
ReplyDeletei will continue to download them with pony archive
ReplyDeleteThank you Seth.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope they release the episodes in Spain too.
I don't buy from iTunes precisely BECAUSE we should be getting a box set. I'm not paying almost 50 bucks for every episode in Season 1 on iTunes only to have to turn around and pay another 50 for a full box set later.
ReplyDeleteAlso a single episode of a 22 minute show shouldn't cost more than .99 cents anyway.
iTunes video not available in EU, the DVD is region 1 (and I'm in 2), no decent toys in sight. The actually good merchandise is damn near impossible to get if you're not in the US.
ReplyDeleteI swear, they just really, really don't want my money. At all.
I would gladly do this if my poor archaic computer could actually support iTunes... yep, my computer is that old... so tragic. I will be getting the DVD in February for sure though!

ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you. In Europe we don't have any option but to acquire our weekly shot of ponies illegally.

ReplyDeleteI am in complete agreement with you about Apple. I will never consciously give them any money, for anything, even Ponies.
I have per-ordered the Shout Factory! DVD form Amazon. This is the same company that was finally able to release Max Headroom (20 Minutes Into The Future), which had been stuck in licensing hell for years. They are a cool company that specializes in collector DVDs, and it was brilliant that Hasbro went to them to make the first official DVD. Buy it, support ShoutFactory! and we'll get more!
Bought a video on iTunes just a bit ago.
ReplyDeleteFound out it's DRMd to not let me view it with any other player but their own. + iTunes doesn't work well on Ubuntu which is my primary OS.
I'm definitely not buying from iTunes again.
