(in UK): I finally buckled and did the dance to get a US iTunes account without a US credit card, and to go the gift-card route, and now have legit season 1 and season 2 pass. Not without some worry while a procedural delay made me think the gift card seller was actually a scammer, which would have been embarrassing as I've never fallen for an online scam before, but it all turned out well in the end.
ReplyDeleteSo I'd actually be a bit *annoyed* now if it turned up on UK iTunes tomorrow. Even though it should be obvious to anyone who isn't in the 20th century media industry that they should do it. It really is ridiculous to have to jump through so many hoops to buy the content legitimately.
I know what I‘ll do. TF2 on brony servers and LOL with a brony acc till the episode is on youtube :)

ReplyDeleteHasbro should acquire PonyArchive and merge it with their marketing department. PA has what Hasbro lacks - a functioning distributing channel of their MLP cartoon "commercial".
ReplyDeleteThen the Hasbro people could rack their brains to come up with wether it would be better to charge people for the episodes or to give them out for free - if they would make up on the roundabouts what they loose on the swings.
Hate it when the only way to get pony is by iTunes! D:

To take down any video on Youtube by company requires you to have your @ domain be the same as your company. All the youtube streams on Pony Archive got taken down by "Hasbro, Inc.."
A few months ago, dozens of pony videos were taken down by "HASBRO, INC.."
It's not like Hasbro left their capslock open. Those are two different people. One of them were trolls.
Thus the other can be a troll too. Don't trust an @hasbro domain.

UK brony here and even if they sold it in the UK via iTunes, I wouldn't install iTunes to buy it. I would definitely buy it from Hasbro direct in the unlikely event they set up their own UK online store (or a worldwide store).
ReplyDeleteSeeing as it's a TV show, I'd be quite happy to WATCH IT ON BLOODY TV. But TV channels here don't want to show them until they are months old. So if I wait for a UK TV showing I'll basically have to avoid the entire internet because of spoilers.
You can get them legally in the UK. Just get Sky+, and watch channel 603 (Boomerang), granted some of the episodes are just repeated OVER AND OVER.

ReplyDeleteYou can access the US iTunes store. At the bottom of the iTunes store page, there's an option to Change Country in the Manage column. Just change it to the US and voila! Then, when you're done, you can just change it back! Simples!

ReplyDeleteJust a warning, I think there's a limit on how many times you can do that. Just like on a Mac you can only change the DVD Region of the Drive 5 times, or only have 5 computers authorized.
Not sure though.

Clearly you have never met a real troll. I've met plenty – not random idiots clopping in their mother's basement, but real, intelligent people that just hate something and would do anything for it to be completely destroyed.
If I could take down the brony pizza hutt initial videos and one by one the new ones and scare the shit out of the original uploader with a huge ass email, someone could do that to Pony Archive.

ReplyDeleteYes, £20 per month for the minimum contract that includes Boomerang; in order to watch *old* episodes in SD, in NTSC conversion, with adverts.
It's not a value proposition. If they actually showed new eps at the same time/day as the Hub, well, that would be a dilemma. If on a channel with HD, less so.

Sign out.
Switch to US store (flag button at bottom)
Go to the iphone app store, pick a free app, any app, and select to download it.
You'll now be prompted to sign in or create an account.
Create one. You probably need a different email address than the one you use for your non-US AppleID. It needs to be real though, so you can received and respond to the validation mail later. I used my old @gmail.com one.
When it comes to enter the credit card, select None. You still need to enter an address; make one up that's plausibly US looking. I made up a fake one that's in the same street and zipcode as Hasbro's head office. But I don't think anyone's really paying attention to find the sarcasm.
Once you've received and replied to the validation mail, you have your account.
Now you need gift cards. I got mine from www.zhljerry.com.
NB: It doesn't say so on the site, but when you first do this you'll get a mail that points you to a page which tells you how to contact the guy - basically to verify you're a real person. It was at this stage, especially as there was no response for hours, that I thought I'd fallen to a scammer, but then he came online at what I figured was 17:30 EST and it all got sorted out. Generally, the site suggests it's more automated than it is; I think he probably gets them done when he gets in from work.
Then you get a mail with a link to a scanned image of a gift card with the voucher code visible.
Go back to iTunes Home, signed in on the US iTunes, and click on Redeem. Type in the voucher code(s). Now you have the credit to buy stuff.
After that there's just the enjoyment of authorising devices and sorting out home sharing so you can watch them. Not sure why (haven't tried too hard) but the only way I got them to play on my iPhone, for instance, was to actually sync them to it; they wouldn't play from the itunes share over home sharing. I don't know what issues may arise with trying to use an AppleTV for this *and* for locally-bought content. (I may get one soon to try though).
Let's just say that if it wasn't for the MLP:FiM episodes I could check out for free after having my interest piqued by the internet memes, I wouldn't have spent the equivalent of $80 on Pony gifts for my buddy's kid this year.

@EphemeralBlue But Boomerang never show the second half of the first season. They've been broadcasting it nearly every weekday since July, and they've only ever played as far as Fall Weather Friends.
