Art of the Dress
Hush Now Lullaby
At The Gala
May the Best Pet Win
Becoming Popular
He explains it the best, so have his copy paste:
"Hey Everyone!! This year the Emmy's they are asking for an "Optional informational essay, up to 200 words, explaining why you believe the entry is Emmy-worthy. The summary, which will be included on the ballot as an accompaniment to the viewing material, may comprise a technical description as a guide to judges, along with any challenges that were met in the submission episode or Special." Many of you are great writers, so pick your fave song from 2011 and email me your 200 word essay of why you think it's Emmy worthy. Send to [email protected]"We ran a 300 word story competition back in march and got around 100 in an hour, I can't imagine the swarm that will happen now. Take some time on it, get it proofread, make sure its up to par. He can't use something that doesn't fit the criteria. These songs are worthy of your time!
Note: You can submit an multiple essays for different songs, so you don't have to choose just one!
Note2: Winter Wrap Up is from 2010, and therefore not eligible.
Now get out there and write!
And check out his facebook page for more information.

I already wished him good luck on Twitter and am typing something up right now.
ReplyDeleteNo winter wrap up?
ReplyDeleteArt of the dress is a close second I suppose.
The man deserves it, too!
ReplyDeleteIt Must be done! Brony powers unite!
ReplyDeleteFluttershy, Rarity, or Mane six? Hmm.......
ReplyDeleteIm writing up one for At The Gala
Needs moar winter wrap up.
ReplyDeleteWinter Wrap Up doesn't qualify because it was from 2010. Sorry guys.
ReplyDeleteOh my, do I HAVE to decide which one?! They're all gold to me!
ReplyDelete"Daniel Ingram - Composer/Songwriter Winter Wrap up was aired in 2010... and it wasn't nominated sadly. 2011 is our year!!"
ReplyDeleteShame Winter Wrap Up isn't eligible. There's no way that wouldn't win.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I'm a terrible writer, so there's not much I can do to help, but I wish him luck. He definitely deserves it.
This needs the 'CHAARGE' tag.
ReplyDelete"Hush Now Lullaby" won't make it. I think "May the Best Pet Win" and "Art of the Dress" have the best chance.
ReplyDeleteGo with At the Gala. That song would win a Tony if MLP was a Broadway show.
ReplyDeleteDaniel! Telling the bronies to help you get an Emmy? That's cheating!
ReplyDelete...Not that I won't do my damnedest to help, mind you, but still!
BLITZ THE EMMY'S
ReplyDeleteIf Ingram gets an Emmy, for a pony song no less, the brony army may double in size! We MUST win this! FOR THE HERD!
ReplyDeleteI friggin suck at writing
ReplyDeletebut you have my best wishes mr.ingram
Oh, I do wish I knew the keywords that the judges yearn to see... does anypony know what criteria they use?
ReplyDeleteWe seriously have a lot going for us: Breaking down traditional gender associations as well as other societal norms, and his songs can be directly linked with an explosion of musical creativity which has reaped benefits for all! Seriously, music which inspires others to actually start doing their own music *has* to be noteworthy.
P.S. This one's gonna be a bit harder to win than the Naughty vs Nice contest on the Hub. Hope some people can write some really convincing essays!
ReplyDeleteon a more somber note, think he realized how badly we killed the hubs event and plans to kill the emmys in the same way.
ReplyDeletegoin a lil ovrbord there, thar
ReplyDeleteMay The Best Pet Win would totally win!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love Art of the Dress, I'm thinking the fact that it takes so much from Sondheim might be a mark against it or something. I'm just recalling how Mansell's work in Black Swan was declared ineligible because it was inspired by Tchaikovsky.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think Find A Pet has the best shot at it.
May the Best Pet Win!!!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking "Winter Wrap-up" but he had posted that the song was back in 2010 apparently, not 2011.
ReplyDeleteEh, I'm not a good writer here so not sure how much help I'll be. I wish him good luck either way though. Out of the choices above, its a tough call. I like, well... all of them honestly. Oof. I'd probably go with At The Gala or Art of the Dress. Though I really liked Becoming Popular too.
ReplyDeleteHeh. I'm no expert on music but I will say one thing.
ReplyDeleteThere are only 2 musical numbers from ANY show, movie, musical, etc that I actually like enough to listen to as a standalone song.
"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" by Sir Elton John from The Lion King Soundtrack
and
"Winter Wrap Up".
What should be included in a song's "technical description"?
ReplyDeleteHey, look! Something else to distract me from final studies.
ReplyDeleteYAY!!!!!
I'm throwing my support behind 'At The Gala.' Sure, every pony song that's ever come out has been fabulous. But 'At The Gala' is a piece that has so many elements to it. It goes from gentle to hard rock to a powerful ending all in one song. Plus it wouldn't sound out of place in a major movie score. Either way, let's get to it. Our chance to conquer new territory is here!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to go with one of the two Rarity ones and/or At the Gala.
ReplyDeleteHow long do we have to submit these? I won't be able to put any serious work into it until at least Tuesday. Whether or not I'm the best writer (I'm not) or whether mine is good enough to use, I'd like to at least put forth my best effort here.
*shadow the hedgehog voice* Damn, looks like I can't help because winter wrap up is last year...
ReplyDeleteThe Emmy's may be the only way I can get my mom to notice the show, as it seems she only reads the magazines that haven't mentioned ponies in any way. Good luck, Daniel!
ReplyDeleteWednesday morning is the deadline people! Good luck!

Guh, I'm a decent enough essay writer, but I don't know the first thing about music or what makes any of these songs technically award-worthy.
ReplyDeleteMy question is: Are we writing the essays for the songs with or without the lyrics included?
ReplyDeleteas some songs are better with lyrics it may make a difference.
Becoming Popular!
ReplyDeleteAt The Gala, all the way. No question. Essay written, essay sent. Ingram must win. Let's do this, Bronies.
ReplyDeleteArt of the Dress is my favorite, but for something like the Emmy's I'd submit "At the Gala".
ReplyDeleteI'm totally putting my vote behind "Art of the Dress" and "At the Gala". If he wins or is even nominated for at least ONE Emmy, I'll have a new reason to get my friends to try this show.
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me- Art of the Dress and At the Gala take inspiration from Sondheim, right?
ReplyDeleteWe are bronies! We are the herd! ... We are Lauren Faust and Daniel Ingram's personal army! SALLY FORTH!
ReplyDeleteTally ho, all ye writers and wordsmiths! The musical genius that is Daniel Ingram must be made known to the world.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with At The Gala or Art of the Dress but I wonder if them using so much from previous songs would work against it.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case, then I would have to nominate Becoming Popular.
If not then Art of the Dress might be a good choice as it's the only song as of yet to have a reprise.
Too bad Winter Wrap Up isn't eligible. It is definitely an outstanding song, more than deserving of an Emmy.
ReplyDeleteArt of the Dress is amazing though.
@TheWerePony That is true. And considering what someone here said about "Black Swan," it wouldn't hurt to throw some support behind an original work.
ReplyDeleteIn that case, the only song that I think would be ear candy for the Emmy people would have to be "May The Best Pet Win." I'd explain more, but I think I'll let my essay do the talking.
May the best Pet win seems Emmy quality to me.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, writing is just one of many skills I don't posses, but maybe I come up with something for "At The Gala".
ReplyDeleteThis is well within our grasp.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken, the song "Devil's hands are idle playthings" from Futurama won an Emmy back when that aired.
Granted, that was a great song. But still, it shows that the Emmy judges are willing to take songs from cartoons quite seriously.
Screw originality, I'm just going to copy/paste snippets from the Three-Wolf-Moon shirt and hope for the best.
ReplyDelete"Becoming Popular" is the best bet, not that I know what kind of music usually wins an Emmy. Rarity's singing voice is top notch and as much as I like "At the Gala" not everypony elses is. Plus, lyrically "Becoming Popular" was the best. Of course, "Best Pet" is more interesting since it's a duet. Ugh, I can't describe in detail why any of them should win in under 200 words.
ReplyDeleteMy vote would go for the Best Pet song. At the gala and art of the dress are good to, but I'm not sure how the fact that they are Sonheim themed song would affect their chances of winning. On one hand, the judges could go "wow thats a very cool take on a classic song" or go "rabble rabble dey stole dat song I award no points"
ReplyDeletePart of me finds it hilarious that Daniel Ingram is contracting out the essays to his fanbase, another part of me admires his tactical wisdom for taking advantage of a horde of enthusiastic and accomplished writers, and a third part of me finds this whole thing heartwarming.
ReplyDeleteAll are good selections but there needs to be one more slot for "Winter Wrap Up"!
ReplyDeleteMay the Best Pet Win hs been stuck in my head for days. My vote rests there, if not for simply catchy lyrics.
ReplyDeleteWhile I am a little bit stunned that Hasbro doesn't have somebody in its giant corporation to do stuff like this, I am more than happy to help. The last couple of weeks have been so very stressful for me; my dad underwent open heart surgery, and has been suffering complication after complication, slowing down his recovery significantly. Being able to help out someone who's music has helped me keep my sanity (Pinkie Pie's 'Smile' song in particular has been such a help for me)? It's like Christmas come early for me, I tell you what. My essay for 'Art of the Dress' has been sent (and rest assured, it's much better written than this comment is). Even if he takes just one look and deletes it, still being able to write that for him meant a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck, Daniel! If not this year, than hopefully the next!
Aww.. crap. Winter Wrap Up was so good. But out of those five, im placing my bet on 'Becoming Popular'
ReplyDelete@Laurence Brown We're better than someone in a giant corporation because there's so many of us and we genuinely enjoy this series. You could say we're more qualified to write a nomination for an Emmy than someone who probably hasn't gone through every detail of the show like us. If the fanfics, artwork, and whatnot don't say anything about us, I don't know what does.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, wishing your dad a speedy recovery and you & yours the strength to keep going.
@Kaijyuu
ReplyDeleteno Winter Wrap-up? oh noes.
I always complain about not having enough time, but THIS - I have time for.
ReplyDeleteMy question is: Are we writing the essays for the songs with or without the lyrics included?
ReplyDeleteI'd second that question, but since no mention has been made of only submitting the music, I presume the entire song is submitted.
I think of the five, there is one front runner, and I'll explain why. "Art of the Dress" and "At the Gala" are both inspired by earlier works. As awesome as they are, it's all too easy to favor original works as having more effort behind their creation than even professional derivative works, and you really want something that can stand above the competition.
As fast paced and compact as "Hush Now Lullaby" is, it is the shortest song on the list, and I think it wouldn't stand out as much against longer songs.
"Becoming Popular" is really excellent quality, but in terms of the competition, I'd push for something that shows all sides of the spectrum, and I feel the refrain holds this song back since it does come as a smidge repetitive, and the music follows the refrain.
To me the best song of the litter is "May the Best Pet Win". First off it can stand alone in that it tells a narrative, but there's no background really required (no "everypony" or universe references), so there's no big conclusions that the audience would need to jump to when first listening to it. Another big strength is the humor. When you're able to pull off a professional grade song free of imperfections and have the finesse to put in jokes, that puts you ahead of the competition in any medium. Additionally, the ending of this song is particularly energetic, the double tempo at the end is really my favorite part of the song.
I took a history of music course a few years ago and I never felt more out of my depth than while struggling through that class, so forgive me if I don't attempt to write an entry, I envision others will concoct paragraphs far more in depth than I could muster. Besides, it really sounds to me like the essay is supposed to be about the technical challenges and limitations faced while creating the song, rather than highlighting the details after the song has been composed, and Mr. Ingram would be in a far better position to comment and provide an introspective on those limitations himself. IN that regard, I'm presuming the majority of this event it to gauge which song the fans feel most compelled to enter in to the competition rather than writing the essay that will actually be submitted.
hey, what about winter wrap up?
ReplyDelete>reads note
oh... well then, art of the dress it is.
The problem for me is that Art of the Dress and At the Gala aren't original works. Those are my favourite songs. I prefer May the Best Pet Win before Becoming Popular so I hope that one gets it.
ReplyDeleteThe problem for me is that Art of the Dress and At the Gala aren't original works. Those are my favourite songs. I prefer May the Best Pet Win before Becoming Popular so I hope that one gets it.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that the two songs that would stand out the most are At the Gala and May the Best Pet Win. May the best pet win was ok till 1/2 way in, where it truly shines out. At the Gala however has a few bonuses for it that puts it above May the Best Pet Win. It has multiple people singing it, with the chorus and backup singers, and the music it's self just seems better then the others.
ReplyDeleteThough Art of the Dress is too damn catchy. ><
He can't submit Winter wrap up. That song is too awesome and would definitely win. Daniel is trying just to give other Emmy competitors a chance.
ReplyDeleteFascinating, will see what I can do.
ReplyDelete@Raefire
ReplyDeleteHe based it on a song from Into the Woods by Sondheim, which did win Tony awards :)
Not sure if I'm capable of explaining technical challenges Daniel Ingram faced, he'd probably be better placed to describe those.
you can count with me.
ReplyDeleteI like "Art of the Dress" myself. However, I don't think that I could write a 200 word essay as to exactly why.
ReplyDeleteI don't have none of that technical music learnin' 'n' such.
it begins....
ReplyDeleteThe problem with At The Gala is that it's technically mostly Sondheim's work.
ReplyDeleteisn't daniel supposed to write these himself though? kinda feels like cheating here oO
ReplyDeleteWinter Wrap Up
ReplyDeleteHands down.
Two hundred words is not a whole lot of room.
ReplyDeleteBEST PET FOR EMMY.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
I just submitted to him a letter for Art of the Dress!
ReplyDeleteAt the Gala is probably the best bet for the Emmys, even though it's not my favorite song on that list. It's the sort of thing that they are most likely to pay attention to.
ReplyDeleteI would vote for May the best pet win, man, just listen to that instrumental along with the singing, At the gala is ok too but I would definetly go with MTBPW.
ReplyDeleteMTBPW is the best song in the series so far HANDS. DOWN.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what you people are smoking to think otherwise.
Hush now and becoming popular are kinda short. Art of the dress isn't as good as at the gala or find a pet imo. I would choose at the gala if parody songs don't get a penalty or something. Otherwise, find a pet, although the fact that 1/3 of the song isn't singing kind of worries me.
ReplyDeleteART OF THE DRESS! GO!
ReplyDeleteMaybe At the Gala. It's definitely Disney caliber.
Season 2 songs haven't really struck me.
Becoming Popular is the only one WE personally helped to name!
ReplyDeleteThat and it's reminiscent of early 90s pop songs before pop started getting stupid.
Other than that(and I really LOVE Becoming Popular), I adore how At the Gala builds itself and highlights every character's desires. There's only one word I can use to describe At the Gala--Glorious. That flourish at the end is magnificent.
ReplyDeletei have nothing to write and dont want to chose but good luck and hope he wins ^^
ReplyDelete@Dantes_Grill
ReplyDeleteYou comment made me lol, I think if you would have added a *squee* at the end with that profile picture it would have been perfect.
Curses! Never have I been so annoyed about my inability to write essays.
ReplyDeletei have nothing to write and dont want to chose but good luck and hope he wins ^^ *squee*
ReplyDelete1) Art of the Dress - absolutely fantastic song. Perfect balance between lyrics, music and expression. Masterpiece with astonishing music and vocals. Nobel Prize material.
ReplyDelete2) Hush Now Lullaby - very interesting. Superb vocal. Unfortunately too short to be used outside community.
3) At The Gala - way too much plot-based. Non-bronies might get confused. Great music and singing but it was an illustration for certain characters and situations, thus will be confusing outside the community.
4) May the Best Pet Win - Even Daniel Ingram fails sometimes. Let's not talk about this song. It's simply bad.
5) Becoming Popular - The 4th best song for me. Especially the vocal side is fantastic. The problem is that lyrics may seem simply dumb for someone who isn't a brony. It's also too pop-y, if you know what I mean. This song would die in crowd. We must remember that "pony song" isn't great by default outside this fandom o)
Art of the Dress > Winter Wrap Up > At the Gala > Becoming Popular
I know that Becoming Popular will get bonus points here for being new but Art of the Dress is definitely the best one. I'll write an essay but I doubt that I'll be sending it - my english is simply not an Emmy material :]
@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteWhilst I agree with most of your points, I feel saying 'Find a Pet' was a failure is rather harsh. It may not be to your taste, but that's no reason to claim that it's bad.
Being a fan of musicals, I was rather appealed to that song (Although it isn't my favourite), as the emotions were well conveyed, and the music seemed to progress as the characters came closer to a solution.
The only fear I have for 'Art of The Dress' (Although I would LOVE for a Rarity song to win) is that appears to be heavily inspired from the Barbra Streisand cover of 'Putting it Together'. I worry that being as such may lose it some marks, but it certainly does stand well as is own song.
ReplyDeleteMy essays will personally be for 'At the Gala' (Due to the specific themes present for each Ponies verse, perfectly symbolizing the tone of their lyrics and their personality) and 'Becoming Popular'(Because Rarity), although I will of course attempt essays for the others if I have the time.
What surprised me though, is that I would have personally chosen 'So Many Wonders' over 'Hush Now Lullaby', mostly because the latter's short length did not allow Daniel to show off much of his skills as a composer. Is there a specific reason for this?
It actually took the Super Ponybeat phenomenon to get me to appreciate So Many Wonders because initially the song came close to grating on my ears a tad, especially with the accompanying scene looking like it was trying to be like Bambi but not possessing the film's pathos. Fluttershy's Lullaby, however, was a hoot and a half, but I wouldn't count it as a proper song.
ReplyDeleteI will try to write something despite my skill :/
ReplyDeleteI do wish Daniel the best of luck, he deserves it :D
I have to second the motion that At The Gala and Art of the Dress, despite being fantastic, aren't original, so that should be taken into consideration.
ReplyDeleteMay the Best Pet Win has to be the song we go with. I posted as much on Ingram's Facebook shortly after the song came out. It's technically AWESOME, an original composition, fantastic singing, wtf it's too good.
Becoming Popular, while entertaining and catchy, doesn't have the musical depth or narrative that MTBPW has.
Well I find Finding a Pet is not really so much a proper song as it is musically inclined narration.
ReplyDeleteAaaaand I sent five Essays!
ReplyDeleteHell yes, because when I do things, I do them the Michael Bay way (without the stupid). May the Best Song win!
Hopefully, one from My Little Pony.
Already dreaming of art of the dress emmy.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, really hope Daniel wins.
ReplyDeleteDon't those Emmy folks like Broadway Musicals, kinda like how the Oscars like artsy films?
ReplyDeleteIf my logic is sound (it's not), then I'd say Find a Pet has the best shot. Because it's the most like a Broadway musical!
May the Best Pet Win
ReplyDeleteMay the Best Pet Win
ReplyDeleteI submitted mine for Best Pet. I know I won't make it, but at least it's an option.
ReplyDeleteI'd say Best Pet. Art of the Dress wins as my personal pick, but it's too direct of a third-party reference to have a real shot, I think.
ReplyDeleteI want to see at least a nomination here, just because of how interesting it'll make the introductions at the actual event.
Bronies, let's unite our powers to get this done. I feel like this could be a big step for us...and besides. He's the type of pony everypony should know. ^ ^
ReplyDeleteI think that If you're really good with essay writing, you should send in an essay for each song. Let him get the best he can for each song then figure it out.
ReplyDeleteSent one today for "May the Best Pet Win".
ReplyDeleteAlso... first time on EqD!
Hi everypony!
Sigh... Becoming Popular.
ReplyDelete"At the Gala" essay sent.

ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to this? Did Daniel get any nominations? When are the nominees announced?
ReplyDelete
