Get your pens/pencils/styluses/mice/whatevers ready, and check out his copy paste after the break for all the details!
NOTE: The Theme for the contest is not specifically Christmas. Draw whatever your heart desires!
Hello again everyone, Calpain here! It's been a few weeks since the December Draw-Off announcement and now the start of the event is finally upon us. Time sure flies when filled with ponies, eh? For those who missed the original announcement, EqD has graciously allowed me to host this competition to close out this exciting year of pony! The stakes? A chance at winning either one of four large sized Intuos4 tablets, one of four Bamboo Create tablets, or one of four $100 cash prizes as well as a lot of fun and an opportunity for artists to show their stuff!
Artists will be able to submit their artwork into these four categories:
- Traditional Artwork (Pencil, crayon, marker, paintings, ect.)
- Comics (Digital or Traditional)
- Hand Drawn Digital Artwork
- Vector/Pixel Artwork
1st Place: Large Intuos4 Tablet
2nd Place: Bamboo Create Tablet
3rd Place: $100 Cash Prize
Cash prizes are in USD and can be paid through Paypal or Steam merchandise if desired.
Timeline and Entry Info:
- All entries must be submitted by 11:59pm EST, December 31st.
- Contestants are allowed five submissions max in two categories.
- Email all artwork to calpaina@gmail.com with the category you wish to enter in the subject line. Please also include in your message a response email address I can contact you at in case your piece wins. Optionally, include a link to your art gallery if you have one as artwork from the event will be featured on EqD during the month.
- All are eligible to enter!
- All artwork must follow EqD's content guidelines which means no porn, no gore, and no OC ponies. Everything else is allowed so knock yourselves out! If you can't decide if your idea for a piece is appropriate for EqD check out some Drawfriends to get a good representative sample.
- Tracing/stealing is not allowed. If it is discovered that a contestant has traced or stolen either official, fan, or other work they will be disqualified from the competition.
- Judging will be performed by the Blog Ponies of EqD and their decisions on winners are final.
- All standard image formats are allowed (JPG, PNG, GIF, ect) and there is no size limitation.
- If you reach your max entry number or have made a revision to a submitted piece you may substitute out one of your earlier entries for your latest piece or revision.
- A completed comic is counted as one submission, not each page that is submitted. So whether the story you wish to tell requires only one page to convey or it's an opus of twenty pages or more it will only count as one entry. Just don't get carried away and fail to finish by the deadline!
- Animated panels are allowed. Comics with such panels can be submitted as GIFs or Flash files.

Ooooh this will be good.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I know what i'm going tommorow!
ReplyDeleteAgain, I find myself wishing I could draw.
ReplyDeleteYay! I have far to few pony related christmas pictures to use as desktops for this month.
ReplyDeleteComics are one entry, huh? Too bad I don't draw those, I could really go far.......
ReplyDeleteTime to bust out the pencil, it's sketching time again!!
Holy crap! YAY Christmas fluttershy! I cant wait, maybe I'll toss my hat in the skirmish!
ReplyDeleteSo..... When is there gonna be a contest for us code monkeys? I get that we already make some games, but no contests? I am disappointed.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, can't wait to see what all comes out of this!
Eh, why not...I'll go for it
ReplyDeleteForget the competition... that Fluttershy has captured my soul in a single wink.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see all the art to come outta this.
ReplyDeleteShould have my pony folder exploding with content! ^_^
YES! It is finally posted! I have been waiting for this post for pretty much all day.
ReplyDeleteGoodluck everypony and human!
December Draw-off? more like December Dawww-off.
ReplyDeleteIs this contest International or US Only? And does the Artwork have to be Holiday themed or can it be anything?
ReplyDeleteOhh...interesting. I just have a few questions that I didn't find answers to in the post (or I could just be blind from mathing all night) but if anyone would be so gracious as to answer,
ReplyDelete1. What exactly is the math num- loltypo Let's try that again
1. What exactly is the maximum number of entries?
2. This may seem like a stupid question, but do they have to be Christmas themed or is anything okay?
CURSE my poor knowledge of drawing on a computer!
ReplyDeleteTimes like these I wish I was talented at art
ReplyDelete"hosting it her on EQD!"
ReplyDeleteShouldn't it be "here"?
Also, art-stuffs? Interesting.
Well I needed an excuse to draw something though it's doubtful i'll actually submit it.
ReplyDeleteIt's as good an excuse as any to spent some time mucking about though.
Offtop:
ReplyDeleteI DEMAND OCTAVIA IN THE VOTE!
(also, it's the pic I posted here earlier today ^^ though I'm preatty sure it has reache EqD in other way earlier)
Thanks for the post, Seth! I'll try and answer additional questions here as well as at the official email address for the event.
ReplyDelete@rustedrabbit
Max entries are five altogether. These entries can be spread out over two of the four categories.
@Bombedrumbum
Basically a multi-page comic counts as one entry out of the total five. If you submit a twenty page comic or a one page comic it will still only count as one of your five entries. That way you can make comics as long as you need them to be in order to tell your story.
Too bad I can't draw to save my life :/
ReplyDeleteTime to break out the Pen and Paper.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThat's great. So what's it meant to be of?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Christmas ponies?
OMG! I HAVE A GOOD IDEA FOR A NEW CHARACTER ALSO!!
ReplyDeleteAs for people asking about a theme: there is no defined theme. Draw what you like and think will be your best work! Just make sure it follows EqD's rules on picture content. I don't really want to limit you guys too much.
ReplyDeleteFlutterHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!
ReplyDeleteHey, what a coincidence! I just learned how to draw a convincing pony face.
Well damn.
ReplyDeleteI've been working on a Fallout Equestria comic centered around one specific gunfight, and was hoping I could submit that for this contest.
But... no OCs, and no gore.
Oh well. Good luck to the contestants. I'm looking forward to seeing the crazy over-the-top awesomeness of the winners.
Yes! Sweet Celestia YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Christmas Fluttershy is going to be half the comments :P (And for good reasoning)
ReplyDeleteAlthough upon seeing the picture I strangely imagined Jesu laughing surrounded by the mane 6 in holiday costumes, petting Fluttershy with one hand as they all smiled to him. I have some weird thoughts... Who knows? 'Tis the season :P
Well shoot, I'd join this but I know I have absolutely no chance of winning this. Don't get me wrong, I can draw some mean sketches but I don't think I'll ever reach the quality that this fandom has. Just look at drawfriends... O_O
ReplyDeleteCan...Can Fluttershy be my present?
ReplyDeleteErr, I haven't seen a post about the new poll yet, so I'll comment here. Where the hell is Rainbow Dash?
ReplyDeletegah! my diabetes!
ReplyDeleteAwesome contest and some really nice prizes!
ReplyDeleteJust to further clarify the rules, am I allowed to publish my work before december 31st e.g. on DeviantArt?
If so, is it allowed to submit artwork that is older than december 1st (=has been available to the general public on the internet before december 1st)?
Guh, no real theme or anything? Hmm...
ReplyDeleteIndecisiveness GO!
"Competition's rising high.
ReplyDeleteSo much that could awry."
I know that I should try entering, even if I don't win anything. All the other artists seem to do a whole ton better than I can dish out. Then again, I'm an animator... I'd better get practicing so I could dish out my best!
Damn I was asking for one of those tablets for
ReplyDeleteChristmas and it would be awesome if I won it.
It kinda sucks cuz all i have is some paper and
a bunch of graphic pencils still. ill try to
submit something a hopefully I could win :3
That... Fluttershy... AH! HEART ATTACK AND DEATH! *thud*
ReplyDelete@Bat3man
ReplyDeleteNothing stopping you from sending me something you've done before that you think is the best representation of your work though I think everyone would like to see new stuff if you can manage it!
And yes, you may publish your work on dA or elsewhere if you want. Actually I encourage it as it will get the word out even further about the contest.
Best of luck to you!
Come on someone draw something of me! Oooh and Tavi too.
ReplyDeleteI..this...I must...ERRGGGHHHH!
ReplyDeleteTABLET CONNECTO!! GOLDION PEEEENNNNNNN!!
HIKARI NI PONYYYYY!!!
I will partake in this competitive relationship among followers of equine creature illustrations.
AWESOME IN (THE ROYLE CANTOLOT VOICE)
ReplyDeleteRule #1
ReplyDeleteArson, murder and jaywalking much?
THIS PLEASES US TO GREAT EXTENT! PRAY, CONTINUE WITH THINE ARTISTRY, AND BRING US FURTHER HAPPINESS!
ReplyDeleteDANGIT, I wish I could draw something good, the only good thing I can draw is G.I.R.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when this contest would be announced.
ReplyDeleteWith finals out of the way, I should be able to contribute something. It'd be cool if I won a tablet, but with all the good artists in this fandom, I'm just a small frog in large pond.
I used to draw lots of fanart, although I stopped slightly before I started watching MLP. I've often thought of getting back into it, but never got around to actually geting back at it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. Thanks to you, I'm now back in the fanart business.
So is it illegal to use a character of our own design?
ReplyDeleteso how do you do it, do you make up some thing or does it have to be about a certine thing, anybody?
ReplyDeleteBronies, it says that its following EqD rules, which means no OC. It actually says that in the rules.
ReplyDelete@bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteYes I read the rules but having total memory blackout of what it means.(hits head repeatedly on table)
im deciding to enter this contest and do a traditional art piece :D
ReplyDelete@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteIt means no fanmade ponies
ffff i must enter Q o Q
ReplyDeleteSo, the piece doesn't need to be Christmas related?
ReplyDelete@bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteMANY THANKS FRIEND!
Minor setback though I can still use another character
I need a new tablet, this is mah chance.
ReplyDelete@Ynop Snow Sparkle.
ReplyDeleteYep, it can be any theme you want it to be as long as it follows EqD content rules.
I'll pass, I'm still trying to get used to drawing with a tablet :D. Maybe next time.
ReplyDelete@Calpain
ReplyDeleteAnd right after you answer my question I find the bits in the rules that already answered them. Truly I am perceptive x3
Thank you very much for answering my inquiries :)
I'm totally going to enter. :D
ReplyDeleteReally fun idea. I hope it spurs a lot of new awesome art. :D
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I have a decent idea, and I can't wait to see all of the amazing art.
ReplyDeletequestion: if I have an idea for a short animation, is it still a valid entry? (I digitally draw the frames) if it is, does it go in comic or hand drawn digital art?
ReplyDeleteDAT FLUTTERSHY.
ReplyDelete@Monster Hunter Brony
ReplyDeleteIf the animation is presented in the form of a comic (a page with panels) then it would go in the comic category.
If it is a straight up animation like something you may find on Newgrounds or Youtube those submissions go beyond the scope of this contest.
However, I am thinking of holding other contests in the future just for animation and possibly music as well depending on how this event goes.
I cant draw :(
ReplyDeleteAnd this is the part where I wish my artwork was at the same quality as some of the others that end up making drawfriends on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteBut, I already had something in mind that I had planned on drawing anyways for the holiday season, so guess I will have to make it the best I can and toss it in for the judging.
im gonna start working on a massive image, something both fun and awesome, probably the most ambitious drawing i have ever done.
ReplyDeletegood luck to everyone!
You know, I might just enter on a whim, I already have a Bamboo (I'd give it to company else on the odd chance I win). I'm really looking forward to the results! That ought to make quite a gallery! Do you best, everyone! I want to see it!
ReplyDeleteAre 3D renders allowed?
ReplyDelete@IG-64
ReplyDeleteGood question! To keep everyone on an even keel 2D art is the sort of work we're looking for in this contest.
I haven't taken an art class in quite some time and rarely draw, this makes me wish I tried it more... Well, I guess now I'll see how well I can do! (probably won't submit any though)
ReplyDeleteLol no rules against humanized?
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should enter one despite the 0 chance of winning.
I think I might have a go at this - mfw those that probably don't need the prizes are the ones who win, that's the only pity about things like this, there are some truly astounding artists in the fandom. Still, an excuse to really work at something...
ReplyDeleteThis should be fun! I know I won't win, but it'll be nice to start improving my artistic abilities.
ReplyDeleteWell, I already have over 7 different pieces of art I'm supposed to be working on, and probably no chance of winning... But I think I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteB> Ability to draw.
ReplyDeleteWhere's the contests for us coders. >:[
i dont have any pens... or a place to draw on XD
ReplyDeleteDon't care for the contest since I can't draw (well, I can use MS paint but...).
ReplyDeleteI just came here for that picture of Fluttershy...
Gah.......
ohhhhh I'm going all out on this.. I need a new tablet pretty bad.. my wacom bamboo small is pretty worn out after 5 years of work and I don't have the money to buy a new one... eeeeeeeeeeeee
ReplyDelete...Where do you get the money for a Large Intuos 4?!
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I have a real question.
I was already planning to re-do that horrible vector image from the pony colouring book, the one with Rarity and Sweetie Belle singing carols called 'a winter in Equestria'. I was going to draw it from scratch, and then I saw this and thought I'd enter it, but would that count as stealing? Different poses, different style, but it would basically be based on an offical image.
So should I sumbit it or just do something different?
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@WizardWannabe
ReplyDeleteHmm, that may be walking on a thin line. To be safe I'd try and submit a different piece if you can.
If you want to still do the picture regardless of the contest, you can enter it as a noncompeting piece to show off your stuff! I've had a couple people already send me work just for the sake of participating in the event.
This is such a great idea! I do have a question though. Is there a subject or specific theme we're supposed to draw for the contest, or is it completely open ended?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
@Calpain Alright, no problem, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to make a huge pixel art of ponies in minecraft!
ReplyDeleteat least we have more time than the last one, so im happy
ReplyDeleteI wish i can draw...oh well i guess i can look who won in the future
ReplyDeleteI already have some great ideas in mind. As much as I like to, I can't tell you what they are!
ReplyDeleteFLUTTER SHY WHY SO MOE!
ReplyDeleteErhem anyway, now to make productive use of the time I've spent doodling ponies in my notebook instead of taking notes pay off!
@pixelkitties
ReplyDeleteCompletely open ended, Pixel! You can make a picture of Fluttershy riding a T-Rex while hunting Parasprites with a missile launcher all while wearing Christmas hats if you wanted!
Flex that creative muscle and give us your best shot.
@Calpain BRB, totally using that idea
ReplyDeleteI know I have no chance of winning, I just wanna do it for the fun of it. Gives me an excuse to be creative and get back into drawing.
ReplyDeleteI don't even care about the contest, that is the most adorable pic of fluttershy I have ever seen. Ever.
ReplyDeleteMy my I'm not going to win but hey this could be fun.
ReplyDeleteAre collabs allowed? A friend and I have been planning a collaborative Xmas-related project, and this contest would be the perfect motivator for our finishing it.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be a comic-sorta-thing, and I'd be doing the words while he draws. Would you be okay with us entering it in his name (since he's the artist)?
@Scootawho
ReplyDeleteHmm, collabs can be tricky especially if the drawing is done by two or more artists who might all want a stab at the prizes.
The circumstances you describe though seem to not bring up this problem so I believe it would be ok for you to submit such a collaboration under his name as long as he is the one to win the prize. So go right ahead and good luck to you both on finishing it!
TO THE TABLET!
ReplyDeleteI got some ideas already
ReplyDeleteHope anthro isn't bad
ReplyDeleteI hate competitions involving talent. Some people are good at art and some aren't. The people who aren't have no chance.
ReplyDeleteI'm ready to draw..... ALOT!
ReplyDelete@Flutterguy
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, it's not easy to decide a method of distribution. What if the drawing had been random? Some people get more use out of a tablet than others.
I'm fairly certain the Equity vs Efficiency debate has at least crossed Calpain's mind.
Oi: Cosplays. That is a forme of Art. Are we allowed to submit that?
ReplyDelete@MLPSpiffy
ReplyDeleteCosplay, while a form of art in its own right, isn't part of this contest. Maybe in a future contest if there is enough demand for it.
Are other generations allowed, as long as there's a strong G4 element?
ReplyDeleteThanks for that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Gijinka/Humanized. Are those allowed?
ReplyDelete@MLPSpiffy
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing in the contest against Gijinka/Humanized, so go right ahead.
@Princess Celestia
ReplyDeleteAs long as there is a strong G4 influence there is nothing wrong with submitting such artwork for the contest.
one last question: Perler/Hama Beads. Are they allowed?
ReplyDelete@MLPSpiffy
ReplyDeleteWhile those are awesome, I would put them under crafts along with plushes, wood crafts, ect. They can possibly be a category for a future contest.
when entering a traditional art pictre, are we allowed to do some cleanup with photoshop? I just relised my drawing is going to take more than my sheet of paper can handle and I wanted to make the edges on an other sheets, scan them separately and merge them together. (I hope I won't have to restart all over because of my inability to start drawing at the right spot >_<)
ReplyDelete@Monster Hunter Brony
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it is that if the majority of the image was constructed with traditional methods with touch ups in Photoshop then it still counts as a traditional image and can be submitted as such. So go right ahead and merge them together!
All right. Thanks. :D
ReplyDeleteHow about something that's been drawn by hand, and then colorized in photoshop? Traditional or digital?
ReplyDeleteFluttershy is SOOO CUTE!!!
ReplyDelete*glomp*
Okay, question.
ReplyDeleteI understand that there are prizes for Wacom tablets, but wouldn't it be plausible that the winner in the digital/vector categories would already have one? If they're good enough to win the contest, it's very likely they'll already have a drawing tablet.
If that is the case, would the winner instead be able to settle for a cash prize?
^^this seems pertinent.
ReplyDelete@Funke
ReplyDeleteIf the majority of the picture is done by traditional methods, but scanned in for color and a couple touch ups I can still count it as traditional. If say a rough sketch was scanned in, fleshed out, inked and then colored in Photoshop I would count that more as a Digital art piece than traditional.
@David
ReplyDeleteGood question and it was a concern that came up during planning. The tablet prizes are mainly aimed at those that do digital work with a mouse or have an older/less sophisticated tablet and hope to upgrade. While a cash prize option would be an easy alternative for those who enter that have a tablet this particular option has some potential consequences.
If a cash prize was offered as an alternative to the tablet it would provide a greater incentive to those who have an Intuos or greater model to enter and possibly smoking the competition. In the end this could keep people who really could use a tablet from getting one.
Those who have a tablet equal or greater than those on offer are still more than welcome to enter. Just know that if they win they'll get a tablet instead of a cash prize alternative.
@Calpain
ReplyDeleteWhat if it was just asking to receive, say, a third-place prize instead? (Then the previous second-placer would become first-place, and so on, so people who actually need the tablets can still have them.)
I'm just curious, because your reply seems to be talking about offering a cash alternative in lieu of a prize, rather than someone requesting a lower place (and thus a lower-tier prize).
@Princess Celestia
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a reasonable alternative. If a person with a tablet wins either the second place or first place tablet and wants to voluntarily switch out for a third place prize I think I will allow them to do so.
Following that logic, if they won first place and switched for third then third would move up to 2nd and 2nd up to 1st. If they won 2nd place then they would just switch places with the 3rd place winner. Of course consent must be obtained from all parties in case this occurs.
Good questions people! This is my first time running a contest and you've all been a great help finding things I may have overlooked.
I remember seeing that fluttershy on google images a couple of minutes a go.. Strange
ReplyDeleteDrat! can you guys do a sculpture competition in the non-to-distant future, because I got an on-going project that I would finish off to get into a competition.
ReplyDeleteCan Gijinkas (human forms of the ponies) be allowed? I have a great drawing if they are.
ReplyDeleteEntering
ReplyDeletewhere do we post em? I'm still kinda new... (Don't worry, I will have an account, my computer is messing up though)
I don't want a tablet... I want ponies!
ReplyDelete@Cer Kamber
ReplyDeleteYes, those are allowed.
@WildAntidote
ReplyDeleteBy post do you mean where do you send the entries? Well, official entries need to be sent to calpaina@gmail.com in order to enter the contest.
This sounds like a fun contest, but I don't really see a point in even trying when the usual drawfriends are just going to win anyway. And I wouldn't blame them -- those are some awesome prizes, where are you getting all the money to buy four Intuos tablets to give away??? Did you win the lottery or something?
ReplyDeleteGood luck to those who do decide to enter!
I have it all drawn out, I just have to color it and I'm postin it.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's sent!
ReplyDeleteMay the best artists win!!!
BAH! I tried to send my entry but it didn't work. It won't let me. Isn't there another way i can show you my entry for this contest please!
ReplyDeleteOf course I go unaware of this contest until there's only about a week left. Time to go destroy my wrist working on something. Need to win one of those tablets.:p
ReplyDeleteI can't do it. I can't bloody do it. I've tried to send my entry. BUt NNNOOOOOOO!!!! The stupid bloody way to send my entry won't bloody let me. I've tried to send you a email with my entry and my name on it along with email address but it won't let me its BULLS**T why do i have to send my entry via something that i can't use. Why can't i just give you a link via the comments section here. That could work in fact i'll do right now.
ReplyDeletehttp://michaeldragon.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4juhfo
Here's the link to my pic. Now please add it to the contest before its too late!
When will the judging be done?
ReplyDelete@BlueNudibranch
ReplyDeleteWhenever Calpain finishes putting together the final compilation and/or the EQD staff finish judging the pictures.
I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but it wasn't posted when to actually expect the final announcement.
SO CUTE!
ReplyDelete
