The Q radio show on CBC in Canada recently did a short report on our little phenomenon here. On top of interviewing someone from Wired, they also asked me a few questions. Overall it does a good job of keeping things neutral, and staying informative, and avoiding the bias we usually see in these.
If you want to listen in on it, check it out here!

Finally! First!
ReplyDeletegogo bronies all over the world!
ReplyDelete"Little phenomenon"
ReplyDelete"Little"
*giggles*
I tend to dislike these little reports but I always apprecate when things are kept neutral and fair.
ReplyDeleteInb4 Jian Ghomeshi looks like Pinkie Pie.
ReplyDeleteEven CBC? Buck yeah.
ReplyDeleteObviously they have to play the theme of MLP and talk about "brushable manes". Nevertheless it is far beyond the average shit that is written/talked about this "little phenomenon".
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that I heard this before you posted it here. Daniel Ingram made a Facebook comment about over an hour or so ago. It was a good listen
ReplyDeleteDamnit Seth, I want to be your friend 8c You sound like a cool guy :v
ReplyDeleteThey talked to YOU?
ReplyDeleteWow. For once they come to the right place.
I like the Neo-Sincerity tag. I think it fits us well. I was off 4-chan when all this started, but I think that's behind us now. Most of us came sometime afterwards. We came here. THIS WEBSITE!!! I sure am glad we have a great group of people running this site, which is the backbone for our community. Thank you. Great listen. SCOOTALOO is best pony.
ReplyDeleteAm i the only one who sang allong to the theme song?
ReplyDelete@Chucklesmoke Spray
ReplyDeleteEquestria Daily makes a lot of people happy every day, you gotta admire and respect that. Even non bronies should (If they knew). x)

ReplyDeleteNeo-Sincerity, I like that.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great report, kept the neutrality pretty well and even leaned toward a more positive outlook.
Oh and well spoken Seth : )
So Seth u think How to Train Your Dragon is a Pixar movie? Last time i check it was a DreamWork moive.
ReplyDeleteOther than that it, I think our ponies have now took over ever media source out there.
Am I the only one who can find Seths contribution, all I have found is a clip of the lady from the wall street journal, anyone have the whole thing?

ReplyDeleteBronies are just the new generation of Trekkies only 20% cooler.
ReplyDeleteThe host actually said the fandom seemed 'quite beautiful.' Wow. If anything this report is more supportive than neutral. I never thought I'd see independent media coverage of our little world without the sneering trappings cynicism- let alone with a degree of warmth.
ReplyDeleteHats off and brohoofs to CBC!
New Mexico? Not quite.
ReplyDeleteHorray for neutrality!
ReplyDelete"Just to make it clear, there isn't anything spcifically fetishistic in their love for the toys and the show, right?"
ReplyDelete"No, they're just in love with the
Quoted from the clip.
Thank God they had no idea about cloppers and Rule 34. This interview would be so much less neutral. As a Canadian, I'd hate for my parents or people I know that bronies do that kind of thing, as they might actually start thinking I/many bronies are into it...
@Chip
ReplyDeletespecifically*
"No, they're just in love with the show*"
My grammar sucks :(
Huh. This was actually nice, sincere and neutral. Ya done me proud, Canada.
ReplyDeleteYeah... R34 ruins everything. I like to keep my MLP mostly pure, because it just is on its own.
ReplyDeleteStill, the lack of the assumption that those things are dominant is a MAJOR step forward for a media outlet. Maybe we should send this to Faux News as an example of how to truly not be biased.
@OtterMatt
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
But while I completely agree, I highly suggest we try our best to avoid being vocal about saying R34 ruins it. I'm of the same opinion as you on that matter, but every last time someone mentions anything positive or negative about Rule 34, clopping, or Pinkie Keen, Twilight goes all rapidash on us and starts a flamewar.
My fault for bringing it up, of course, but I'm just suggesting :P
Am I the only one who went O_O when miss Vauhini Vara said My Little Pony colon? Maybe I'm just tired...
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the guy is a potential brony...
ReplyDeleteQUICK! WE MUST MAKE HIM JOIN THE HERD! SMOTHER HIM IN LOVE! MAKE HIM 20% COOLER! PUT HIM IN TRANCES AND DO EVIL DANCES!
That was a surprisingly really good segment on bronies. That radio station was being honest in their observations and we came across really well. Instead of trying to make us look like social deviants, choosing quotes to make us look bad, and using inflammatory language they decided to actually do their research before making judgements and gave honest opinions and facts. Well done, radio station. Well done.

ReplyDelete@Chip
ReplyDeleteYeah, I see that. But this isn't my first fandom I've been around or in, and I just love how the MLP fandom is based so much more around creativity and appreciation, and less around perversion and edginess than SOME OTHER ONES (*cough*furries*cough* yes, i was all into it in college...). And I think that's one of the biggest draws for me. It just seems so much healthier to me, and trust me, I've been there.
/sincerity mode = !flamebait
"..one should leave one's Celestia out in the sun..."
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I just love this line.
Yes. It's good they either didn't know about or simply didn't mention some of the darker areas of the community. lol Every community has those aspects in them. Especially ones found through online culture it seems. But it's good some news sources don't use that as their "hook" and look at the community and it's members from a more neutral and unbiased stance.
ReplyDeleteBronies: destroying cultural gender stereotypes and heralding neo-sincerity since 2010!!
ReplyDeleteThe Neo-Sincerity thing was an awesome point. If only more people got this!
ReplyDeleteIf only my Dad would've bene listening to the radio a little earlier, he would've heard this. Drat.
ReplyDeleteThat was actually a really well done piece. There was real, honest to goodness effort put into researching us. Props to CBC radio.
ReplyDeletelol, leaving Celestia out in the sun to bleach her white.....I found it quite ironic xD
ReplyDeleteIt was a pretty interesting listen. And good to see a neutral discussion that doesn't involve hate or accusations of bronies only being those who are sexual deviants or perverted in some way.
Hooray, another generic brony article. We seriously do not need to be informed about every single article.
ReplyDeleteI've been a brony for 4 month, and I'm very impressed and happy about how the world is starting to accept us. I really expected a lot more of hate.
ReplyDeleteGeez. Until something else comes along to distract the presses, criticism & judgement abounds by those who don't understand. Sounds about the way of the world! Where's a Lohan scandal when you need one?
ReplyDeletei've got nothing to say so i'm just gonn-..TWILIGHT SPARKLE!
ReplyDeleteYou began amazingly there Seth.
ReplyDelete"I'd compare it to Pixar films...Like 'How To Train Your Dragon'"
I had to rewind it eventually because I was laughing for the next few minutes. Lrn2Pixar Seth.
Not bad, but I really wish they would get someone who really knows more about how this and other shows are made as a reporter for once, as there are always so many gaps. Still a pretty good report though, although I don't think every brony is 'obsessed' with the show. Obsession and passion for something are pretty different.
ReplyDeleteAlso, hate to contradict you Seth, but I think a TON of cartoons have great voice acting, and there are actually more good animated shows than some people seem to think.
Wow...that sounded pretty cynical. XD Seriously though, even if the reporting was bad (which it thankfully hasn't been that often), it's awesome to see our little fandom growing and spreading.
Jian is an amazing dude, I've been listening to Q for about 3 years now, it it NO SURPRISE that his show, like everything else it deals with, treats the subject matter with respect.
ReplyDeleteIf you liked what you heard, I encourage you to check out more episodes of the show! Its one of the shows that makes the CBC great.
CBC usually does a decent job of being neutral, and Q is an excellent show. For those of you who don't know, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) is our national radio and TV service. Paid for by my tax dollars. Money well spent, I say!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I just can't choose who the best pony is.
I also put forth a thank you note and further comments to Q's email. Usually, if a topic gets plenty of interest, Jian will bring it up again on a later show.
ReplyDeleteI hate it when Brony is only used to refer to the male fans. I'm a BRONY, not a pegasister. I don't mind the term pegasister, I just prefer Brony because it unites the fandom regardless of gender.
ReplyDeleteNice, already a fan of Q/Jian Ghomeshi. Now he's 20% cooler!
ReplyDelete@Mr.Doctor Don't be silly. We all sang along to the theme song. It's who we are.
ReplyDelete@Lardlad I noticed how Ms Vara really put the emphasis on the colon. There is no colon, even though I always put one in when I abbreviate MLP:FIM.
@Manajix I already sent him an email stating that there is important Canadian Content in the fandom, namely plushes made in the prairie provinces that go for several grand and NACP's For The New Luna Republic that really sparked the whole music scene here. You want the CBC to take notice? Hit them with Canadian content.
@Ponies!!! Whoa there! Easy! Their research consisted of reading Wired and phoning the person who wrote the article and phoning blog pony Seth. I think Wired did all the heavy lifting here.
@XTUX345 Is your dad up late? It's on again at 10pm tonight.
@Forderz Right on. Jian is cool. And as you said, the more email the Jian gets, the better. If you know of Canadian Content in the fandom, send it. The CBC needs Can Con.
@Daniel G Many times I've read blogs by people in the US stating that they go to the CBC for unbiased reporting and information.
@Sareth I totally agree with you. It sucks. The media is lazy and oversimplifies the story, leaving only a cartoonish and sensationalistic veneer. At least Ms Vara did mention that the meet she went to was not attended only by guys. Write to Jian. Set him straight.
ReplyDeleteStop trying to plug yourself Seth =P
ReplyDeleteJian Ghomeshi is awesome. I always enjoy listening to Q. CBC Radio tends to be pretty smart, and positive towards things. Although... It's the hipster radio station though too.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think that they would cover Bronies, but I would have expected a good approach from them on it.
@Ponies!!!
ReplyDeleteCBC has some great reporters, particularly in the radio area.
Am I the only one that, whenever Seth's last name is mentioned, immediately thinks "Scootaloo!"?
ReplyDeleteHe should totally change his last name to that. Maybe I should start a petition. :p
They don't hate us! Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteI check out every article Seth posts about ponies, and the writer, if they aren't a brony, usually makes the fandom sound like it's nothing but a bunch of weird, creepy men. At least these people see us as a group of normal, positive people.
@Sturs I usually think "Scotellaro! Scot-Scotellaro!" haha
ReplyDeleteHA! the CBC is good for something after all, usually they just take $1.1 billion a year and put on stuff hardly anyone watches/listens to. And I see they do remember how to do objective reporting, (their television counter parts have been steadily getting biased up the wazoo over the past decade, but maybe their radio people are different, I don't listen to them that often).
ReplyDelete"There isn't anything particularly fetishistic about their love for these characters and toys, right?"
ReplyDelete"No, there is absolutely not".
Oh, how I wish this were true...
A lighthearted, surprisingly even and benign look at bronies.
ReplyDeleteNicely done! :-)
Jian Ghomeshi...talking about MLP???
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaaaaat?
@Blott
ReplyDeleteWell, it IS, for the overwhelming majority and the public face of the fandom. All fanbases have their R34-ers, in a matter of speaking.
@HappyCrusader CBC Radio's usually pretty good. I used to listen to it a lot back when I had a long commute, and often still do when I'm in the car.
ReplyDeleteListening to the clip right now and I think they did a good job of it, so that's pretty cool.
I love CBC. State funded media doesn't have to worry about trying to get the most viewers/listeners, and can instead focus on doing a good job.
ReplyDeleteQ? Why not Discord?
ReplyDeleteToday they did a follow up. They read a few responses, and the letter of he the day had the phrase "Coming out of the stable." for someone publicly declaring their MLP love. I for one think this should be adopted as the official term. :)
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the description of a typical brony. Im not tech savy. Im a firefighter/paramedic and an E3 in the Navy
ReplyDeleteI'm not tech savvy either.
ReplyDeleteIn today's episode of Q, which I've linked to here you will find the part where Jian reads a few reactions to the brony segment from minute 25 to minute 28. Advancing the player to minute 25 is a bit tricky, I had to drag the marker/gizmo/thingy/slider very carefully, I couldn't just yank it halfway down the slot and hope to hear anything.
GJ CBC, at least we've managed to get away from the "lazy/pedo" status and have moved to a regular fan group who doesn't hate.
ReplyDeleteOne small word for a station
One giant leap for fanbase and ponykind
@Steven To be fair, just because you don't fit the description of a typical brony doesn't mean that description is wrong.
