I can't remember for the life of me what trope it is, but it's of the "person wants high society, high society comes, high society forces a decision between them or the old life, person chooses the old life because she can't anyone who can't respect a balance of the two" variety.
Cue Aesop on "Grass is always Greener", "Loved ones are more important than ambition", etc.

ReplyDeleteYup. Looking at the episode order it felt like the first episodes were too much Twilight. Return of Harmony 1 & 2 had Twilight front and center, Lesson Zero was all Twilight and even Luna Eclipsed was Luna and Twilight.
I would've switched Lesson Zero with Sister Hooves Social to give it more balance.
This has a lot of potential to flesh out Rarity's character more. I'm excited.

If we ask them enough they might try to fit in some extra AJ episodes into season 4.(don't mean that in a disrespectful way as I love AJ more then the next pony just pointing out that all the season 2 episodes are pretty much done)

ReplyDeleteSilly ponies... just because the episodes are Rarity-centric (or at least in terms of the descriptions we have) doesn't necessarily mean the other ponies won't have decent roles or see meaningful character development as well.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow's episode may even end up being more about Sweetie than Rarity, kind of like how Apple Bloom had her spotlight episode before. And/or feature the Apple sisters heavily as well. I guess we shall just have to wait and see!

ReplyDeleteWell, if I remember correctly, most of these S2 episodes were finished or already in development before the fanbase even became prominent.
Besides, if the show started catering to what the bronies wanted instead of what everyone wanted, the show would lose a lot of it's charm.
Besides, the whole appeal of Luna is that we know so little about her. If we saw her every week, she'd become just another pony.
I'm sure a lot of fanfics have explored this issue, it's an obvious idea given Rarity's character. Glad to see they're doing it in the actual show.
ReplyDeletehmm, so far there have been 2 twilight sparkle eps (I count luna eclipse as one) 2 rainbow dash, and 2 rarity, with a CMA ep mixed in. I'm seeing a bit of a pattern is all.
ReplyDeleteRarity requires constant attention from the writers in order to make sure her character is more than a caricature, so she gets a lot of episodes. It also doesn't hurt that she is best pony. Ahem! Anyway, there are 14 episodes after this one for Pinkie, Fluttershy, and AJ. If it's anything like Season 1, character-centric episodes tend to clump together.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to make a prediction. She'll spend half the episode bouncing back and forth between going, at the end her friends will tell her to go for it, then she'll turn around just before it's finalized.

ReplyDeleteOf course, the writers could be doing something a bit sneaky on this one. It could, for instance, be that Rarity is choosing Canterlot because she thinks that her friends expect it of her; upon discovering that they want her to stay in town as much as she herself REALLY does, Derpy Hooves will get her first real speaking line that isn't a gasp or grumbling about Fluttershy when she goes all M Night on us and says "WHAT A TWIST!!"

ReplyDeleteI think many people could have seen an episode along these lines coming along at some point. It's a classical crossroads many people have had to deal with at one time or another. Family/friends vs your career and the like. I know that decision as well.
Yay! More Rarity. She had only a minor role in the first three episodes and was missing entirely from the fourth, so it's not like she's overexposed this season.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, through the first half of the first season Applejack had gotten starring roles in AppleBuck Season, Look Before You Sleep, Fall Weather Friends and her little sister starred in The Call of the Cutie. Reading the description of those people must have thought the Applejack train was never going to end.

I really hate to say this; but I almost want Rarity choose her connections in Canterlot over her friends. I know that sounds like something that's very contrary to the show's central theme, but it sets up a perfect scenario for the Aesop that you have to let your friends have a life that doesn't always involve you. Which is a perfectly valid life lesson.

Hey, if Dash got two episodes in a row, maybe Applejack has like 3 episodes in a row in the second half of the season? I recall it took over half a season for Dash and Pinkie Pie to get their own episodes.

Oh well, Rarity is still good. Probably not going to be the "Let your friends go and do what they want in life." Moral, but who knows. Hopefully Rarity Social Connection isn't a jerk like Gilda was.
I like the sound of this! Since Rarity is getting this episode to herself, I'm hoping tomorrow's will focus more on Sweetie Belle than her.

ReplyDeleteTo be entirely honest, I can see why they're having so many RD/Rarity episodes. Think back to the first season; some of the best episodes featured RD or Rarity, like Suited for Success (and one of my personal favourites; a Dog and Pony Show), and of course, Sonic Rainboom.

Important social connections in Canterlot? Perhaps we're going to see Hoity Toity. Photo Finish or Sapphire Shores again. Could be interesting, especially if it's Photo Finish.

ReplyDeleteWatching it like this, episode by episode, it seems a lot more 'unbalanced', rather than watching all episodes in a big heap (as was the case for people who got into the fandom later on). Pinkie Pie for one has prominent roles in about every episode, and A.J., though she doesn't have many episodes centered around her, usually has a pretty significant role in each episode. No character really gets left behind, which is more than can be said for too many other shows. These writers know what they're doing, and we can be pretty certain ALL the characters will play their part in upcoming episodes.
I'd rather watch the episodes first, and just enjoy them for what they are, before drawing any conclusions. A one-sentience synopsis isn't much to judge by. ;)

I seriously think I would experience blissful heart palpitations if this fantasy were ever to be realized, unlikely though that is~

Well this episode was bound to happen, given her nature and desire for all things sophisticated and glamorous. Should be nice to see how she handles it. Those she chose between her friends who are always there for her or her connections that can help her fullfil her dreams.

in Rarity's defense I will say that, aside from her popularity and the fact that she wasn't around in Luna Eclipsed, even when an episode is focused on one character, it might also put some light on her relationship with the rest... take for example Suited for Success, it was mostly about Rarity making the dresses, but it was also revolving about how the other 5 ranted about their respective dresses and then apologizing after the mess they caused and making up for it...

Let's hope the tables are flipped this time.
The season is still young, I'm sure they'll get around to covering everyone's respective favorite ponies eventually.

@DPV111 But also note that some of their best moments have also come from Episodes that focused on them. Rarity singing Art of the Dress, Fluttershy standing up to a Dragon, Rainbow Dash saving the day in Sonic Rainboom, Pinkie Pie going insane in Party of One.

ReplyDeleteI loathe episodes where the show tries to glorify friends who, coincidentally and/or outright intend to, impede the character's career/romance/whatever. But I have faith in the writing staff and I'll assume the synopsis is badly worded or they are going to do something new and exciting with the premise.

So I'm sure we'll see Pinkie, AJ, and Fluttershy getting their time in the spotlight back soon. Really, Rarity only had two episodes to herself in season 1 - Suited for Success and A Dog and Pony Show. Look Before You Sleep focused on her and AJ, and Green Isn't Your Color focused on her and Fluttershy.
(Both with Twilight kind of playing the middlepony.)
Pinkie only really had Party of One to herself.
Dash... well, Dash shared Griffon the Brush-Off with Pinkie and that hosebeast Gilda, and Sonic Rainboom was shared with Rarity. (Then again, Cutie Mark Chronicles was pretty much WHERE IS RAINBOW DASH?" "Oh, she was responsible for everypony's Cutie Mark lol")
Fluttershy had Dragonshy and A Bird In the Hoof to herself, AND she got the last mental breakdown in season 1. Plus she shared Stare Master with the CMCs, already mentioned Green Isn't Your Color above.
So, yeah, AJ and Pinkie are maybe ONE solo episode short compared to Rarity and Fluttershy (and if you count Feeling Pinkie Keen as a wholly Pinkie episode instead of Pinkie and Twilight, well...)
And we'll probably get those two fixed up shortly.
It'll be fine. This is only episode 9 of 26. Calm down, guys.

ReplyDeleteThe farmer left some pretty profound advice for Rarity.
I'd say this episode outright showcased Applejack and Applebloom's close, heartfelt sisterhood,
as was used as a tool to repair Sweetie Belle and Rarity's wayward split.
AJ and AB were just as important and fleshed out as Rarity and SB were!
Also... LOL @ Rarity's parents! That was too perfect. Reminds me of some fanfics I read.

ReplyDeleteI love Rarity episodes but I feel like they should have been more balanced when deciding the chronology of the eps. It's silly to have back to back Rainbow Dash episodes or to have two Rarity-centric episodes so close together. I'm guessing the second half of the season will be AJ, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie-heavy.

ReplyDeleteYou know, there really were ONLY 4 big musical numbers in season 1. Winter Wrap Up, Art of the Dress, Cutie Mark Crusaders, and At the Gala. @ were parody works inspired by Stephen Sondheim, and 2 were original creative works. Everything else was short tunes by individual ponies (mostly Pinkie). I figure, we have about 5 episodes to go before we need to worry about big musical numbers. It could happen at any time, but if things push past 5 more episodes, than statistically, we are shrinking the episode to episode gap for large musical numbers.
ReplyDeleteI would expect a one off short musical number soon as well. Those do happen more frequently, so it is a little odd. In season 1, we had one pinkie song in episode 2, TWO in Episode 3, one song sung twice in episode 9, and we didn't get Winter Wrap Up till episode 11, a mere 2 episodes shy of HALF WAY through season 1. Episode 12 had a Pinkie song, and then the epic Art of the Dress appeared in episode 14. We don't get another till episode 18, with the CMC. We don't get another song till episode 21, where pinkie does her best old west song and dance. Episode 23 gives us the biggest source of diabetes ever, with So Many Wonders. Pinkie shines with a song for a moment before her brightness goes out in episode 25, and then the season finishes off with the legendarily awesome At the Gala.
4 large songs.
4 medium songs.
6 short songs.
14 songs total.
We should start to see short to medium length songs by individuals soon. I'd worry more if we didn't get those first. If season one was any indication, we can go nearly half way through before seeing a large, epic song, though they are welcome to throw one out at any time please! :)

ReplyDeleteWell... someponies lend themselves to episode-centric status than others. Both Applejack and Fluttershy are too mild-mannered to have individual problems worth a whole episode. I liked Applebucking and Dragonshy, but they aren't up to this season's standard. Both characters do much better with a co-star or secondary role: Sisterhooves Social and Stare Master are good examples.
ReplyDeleteI like having more focus on Rarity and Rainbow Dash. That's not because I'm particuarly charmed by these ponies; for me they're the bottom two of the Mane 6. But they've often gotten comic-relief parts when they could support much more. Developing these characters is an opportunity for the series to get even better. Although Sisterhooves Social was primarily about Sweetie Belle, I thought it was a good start along these lines.

ReplyDeleteI think these recent episodes are the first time were I've finished an episode and thought "Needs more singing". I almost always hate songs in TV shows, but every song so far has worked perfectly. Props to Ingram for that.
Now, where are those songs for S2? We got 5 episodes in already and no in-episode songs. :(
I'm hoping they do a BG charcter episode at some point.

ReplyDeletePinkie Pie is in the same boat or even more so; barring a few moments she's purely comic relief and those few moments really only hint that there's some depth, they're not explored nearly as much for the sake of comedy and it's up to fanon to attempt to fill in the blanks. None of the other five require such drastic measures.
I fear for Pinkie Pie as a character and not a flanderized caricature to just deliver the jokes in the show, especially when 9 episodes down the line (over 1/3 of the season) and she still won't have developed any further as a character than in Party of One - let's be honest, the synopses for 6-9 would shoehorn her in at best.
I'd not be surprised if people are saying Luna has more depth than Pinkie as dire as that sounds.
