We were all curious about it yesterday, and it looks like they have finally popped up. Hasbro has some "official" names for our favorite background ponies. Obviously due to legal reasons, they couldn't use the fanon ones.
Lyra is above, and Berry Punch/Blues/Carrot Top can be found after the break.
Note: For the sake of not driving fanfiction archives everywhere insane, please keep using the fanon names for those! Or at least include that your "Heartstrings" in the story should be filed under Lyra.

ReplyDeleteGolden Harvest... Sorry I'll keep Carrot Top :D
ReplyDeleteI prefer our names for them, though it could be worse.
ReplyDeleteThey look pretty cool
ReplyDeleteHuh guess there okay...
ReplyDeleteThe pictures on the cards look familiar . . .
ReplyDeleteLyra will always be lyra. Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteI'd say some of them are better than the fanon names....
ReplyDeletebuutt...
I'm gonna stick with em.
Out of principal.
Heartstrings is kind of a great name. Golden Harvest - not so much.
ReplyDeleteAND THEN WE KNEW THEIR NAMES.
ReplyDeleteYou previous commenters should be ashamed for not seeing the possibilities.
They will be listed shortly...
our names are better..!
ReplyDeleteHASBRO! IF YOU ARE WATCHING THIS FEEL FREE TO USE OUR NAMES!!
I agree with Cynical Muse... Lyra is LYRA!!! Why change it now???
ReplyDeleteMaybe I would accept these names if they were, you know, the actual ponies, not just recolors of the mane six.
ReplyDeleteSome of the few instances where Fanon>Canon
ReplyDeletePictures on the cards=main characters in disguise.
ReplyDeleteI expected worse, to be honest, and Berryshine isn't bad, but I'll keep the fanon, if it's all the same. Especially for Lyra.
ReplyDeleteAnd golden harvest, well...Carrot Top does instantly conjure the idea of that *coughannoyingcough* comedian (You can hate me, I don't mind. I'm sure some people like him) but it also fit's her so well. Noteworthy is a nice name. =)
Lyra forever!
“Shine,” that sounds like some badplot overproof booze.
ReplyDeleteIts funny because we will NEVER use those names.
ReplyDeleteLaziest art ever XD
ReplyDeleteEenope. I think I'll stick with the fandom names in my stories.
ReplyDeleteDo they really just recolour the mane six for the card pictures? (except for Blues who seems to use Big mac)
ReplyDeleteI... just... can't... use these... names... too used too fannon ones...
ReplyDelete>Heartstrings
ReplyDeleteNope.avi
"Lyra Heartstrings" has a pretty ring to it.
ReplyDeleteSilly lil' Hasbro, Fanon names > Canon names. You should know that.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I don't think those names will stick unless they actually get used in the show.
ReplyDelete1) eehhh. Fan names are better.
ReplyDelete2) totally re-used Vectors on the cards (Twi for Lyra, Rarity for Berry, Mac for Blues, and Pinkie for Carrot) xD
"Berryshine"? Somehow, that makes her sound even MORE like an alcoholic! (Moonshine, anyone?)
ReplyDeleteNO.
ReplyDeleteHER NAME IS LYRA.
HER NAME IS CARROT TOP.
JUST NO.
I feel many new ask Tumblrs coming.
ReplyDelete@Tren
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was thinking. Loves berries? Yeah, after they've fermented.
Now bring them to Quebec. Damnit Rainbow Dash is lonely here.
ReplyDeletei dunno even tough heartstring is a good name
ReplyDeletei still prefer the fanon name of lyra.
on the other hand lets be gratefull they didn't made derpy "bubbly sky" or something along the lines
Berryshine is decent. I mean, Moonshine?
ReplyDeletePersonally I like the fannon names ALOT better, maybe its just me but Heartstrings and Bonbon just doens't sound right
ReplyDelete@l33tsaber
ReplyDeleteThat's true. I see no problem with this arrangement.
Lyra Heartstrings. Has a nice tone to it.
Meh, fans have been wrong before, will be again, and frankly, whatever they would have chosen is fine with me. Like Dash, I am about as easy-going as it comes.
ReplyDeleteThat being said... lazy pallete swaps of the Mane 6 for the portraits? Raspberry sounds from my tongue at you, Hasbro!
ATTACK OF THE CLONES!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Heartstrings and Lyra are not the same pony, they simply both have the same cutie mark
ReplyDeleteI like "Golden Harvest" though, I thing I might actually call her that name, though will still call her "Carrot Top" when needed.
Copyright issues? But the characters and the show itself is theirs! WTF Hasbro!
ReplyDelete"Legal reasons"?
ReplyDeleteThey're fanon names. Excuse me if I'm missing something obvious here, but anyone care to explain?
Also, Heartstrings... could work well as a last name.
Lyra Heartstrings.
imokaywiththis.jpg
INCOMING FAN BACKLASH! TAKE COVER!
ReplyDeleteAlso why is Berry Pun-uhh... Shine a unicorn?
I will so totally ignore these false names. Background ponies are property of the bronys.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to stick with the unofficial names. These names sound too much like the 80's version.
ReplyDeleteNO Its Lyra AND CARROT TOP
ReplyDeleteFUCK YEAH NOTEWORTHY
ReplyDeleteBerry Punch is an earth pony. Berryshine is a unicorn (and a Rarity recolor, essentially).
ReplyDeleteI guess distillation requires unicorn magic.
My Little Berry, Moonshine is Magic!
Well it could definetely be worse, but at least the names sort of fit. Still think fanon names are better.
ReplyDelete@Michael Lewis
ReplyDeleteTotally true. All the mares up there are just recolours of the mane 6. So... I am probably just going to say that those are our beloved background ponies.
@CitationNeeded
ReplyDeleteWell... "Berry Punch Berryshine" just sounds weird... I guess not everyone can be a winner
You could argue that that's not Berry Punch since that's a unicorn there. Other than that...Golden Harvest? Really? Heartstrings isn't bad tho.
ReplyDeleteI can't see anyone changing now.
ReplyDeleteAnd who cares about the card art being a recolored vector, the ponies themselves are just recolors after all.
Lyra Heartstrings does sound right though, if you need a full name...
And berryshine is a unicorn, therefore berrypunch's evil sister.. or something.
LEGAL REASONS?!
ReplyDeleteWhat, they think we'll sue!?
HASBRO ARE YOU MAD?!
We should use the canon names as last names. That's probably what I'll do.
ReplyDeleteI actually sorta like Heartstrings, though I think "Lyra Heartstrings" might be the best of both worlds. Likewise, I think Noteworthy is a better name than Blues, and (here I invite mild flaming, I know) Golden Harvest better than Carrot Top, though admittedly 'Carrot' is such a cute nickname for her that it would be a shame to lose it (mayhaps keep 'Carrot Top' and 'Carrot' as nicknames?). Berryshine, though? Can't say I'm fond of that name. Good thing it's being used for a unicorn, and not for Berry Punch. ;)
ReplyDeleteLegal issues? I don't follow. Sure, once people write it down, it's technically their property if they did it first, but surely Hasbro isn't too stupid to think that anyone would complain about it?
ReplyDeleteI mean, Noteworthy, fine. Berryshine, sure. I can even deal with Heartstrings, though it sounds like she should be pink instead of green. But 'Golden Harvest?' No.
Wait guys, we shouldnt give up THIS easy!! Its obvious they love us I mean they changed Ditzy to Derpy for us!! And Pon3 is canon, so who knows
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean we have to use these names in fanfics we submit here from now on?
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I understand what the "legal reasons" are behind not using the fanon names, but oh well. These names won't stick, anyway.
ReplyDeleteI am not okay with this...
ReplyDeleteFar as I'm concerned, these names aren't for Lyra, Berry Punch, the stallion I don't actually recognize, or Carrot Top. And it's not because the names are bad. In fact, I like the names.
ReplyDeleteIt's the excessively lazy art that turns me off to actually using them. Recolored versions of mane 6/Macintosh? Just... No. Berry is by no means a unicorn, after all.
So, if we ever see these particular recolors of the mane cast walking around, the names will fit them just fine I think. But for Carrot Top (Who doesn't have Pinkie's mane at all) Lyra (Who really looks nothing like Twilight) and Berry (NOT A UNICORN), their names will remain the same.
While Lyra is a cute name and all, Hearstrings is just beautiful. I think it suits her well, due to her apparently rather changable emotions. Berryshine and Golden Harvest are alright I suppose. Blues is just a better name than noteworthy. Anyway, I am team Heartstrings all the way.
ReplyDelete@l33tsaber I move that we just make "Heartstings" Lyra's last name.
ReplyDeleteThose saying 'why they reuse art of the Mane Six' should probably notice that the figures are recolors as well, so no great surprise there...
ReplyDeleteSlightly disappointed that our names don't work anymore, but the names they're giving them sound good and still fit the personalities we gave them!
ReplyDeleteI hate the recolors. C'mon Hasbro, you can do better than that!
ReplyDeleteAs for Berryshine and Golden Harvest, well, perhaps they earned "Berry Punch" and "Carrot Top" as nicknames - perhaps initially teasing ones that they later adopted.
ReplyDeleteEvery retcon has a silver lining.
I love how Berry's new name is actually more suggestive of alcoholism than ours. That's a beautiful little quirk of life right there.
ReplyDeleteI just felt a great disturbance in the pony universe... as if the fanon just cried out and was destroyed... :P To be honest, I think I like heartstrings and noteworthy better, they're a little more creative than Lyra and Blues. Oh well, whatevs.
ReplyDeleteDo those cards really say one peice of info over and over in several languages?
ReplyDeleteFanon Names can be nicknames? :D
ReplyDeleteI like the name Noteworthy, actually... But "Golden Harvest" just doesn't have the same ring to it as Carrot Top :<
@Secret Pony Lyra Heartstrings and Bonbon Expecting sounds fine to me.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing to live for anymore, rip me.
ReplyDeleteNope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else finding it amusing that there's already more anger (such as it is) over the names of these ponies than there was over Luna's canon personality?
ReplyDeleteThings to note.
ReplyDeleteThat isn't Lyra it's a Twilight styled recolor. Lyra Heartstrings is a nice name though.
Berryshine sounds even more intixcated on booze and like Berry Punch's sister. (Rarity recolor)
Noteworthy? Really? Because I don't really find him noticeable.
Pinkie Pie look alike is named golden harvest? We still have our pony with the dyed orange mane called Carrot Top and they might be cousins. Golden Harvest is kind of a poor name... having to say hi to golden in the morning, would cause my voice to be filled with utter sarcasm at her name.
"HEY GOLDEN, HOW'S YOUR RETRIEVER?"
That's not Lyra, that's Twilight cosplaying as Lyra.
ReplyDeleteOur names are better, I'll stick with the Fan ones for now ;)
ReplyDelete@Lagmobile
ReplyDeleteALSO:
I know, I know, they didn't use fan names and they re-colored old ponies; it's true.
But this is a deliberate attempt to reach out to the fandom by picking these particular ponies, so I feel like we should cut them some slack. There probably are some sort of good, complex reasons to avoid fannames, but it's a tip of the hat to us to use these ponies, so the less fan backlash the better in my opinion.
Since when does Berry Punch..I mean..."Berryshine" have a horn? =/
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings.
ReplyDeleteName Surname.
Anypony okay with this?
Okay, I'm fine with Lyra Heartstrings. I'll give them that. But I refuse to use any name other than Blues- because if I do, that means Tangled Up in Blues becomes invalidated, and that makes Rinella a sad pony.
ReplyDeleteAs for Berry and Carrot Top- as far as I can tell, those are just Mane 6 recolors, and they don't look much like them. So clearly those are different characters.
@Tren I was thinking the same thing!
ReplyDeleteNew names, but the personalities still fit!
Well, yes, obviously alternative names had to be used. I already knew that was coming, so I'm not surprised there. For anyone wondering, yes, legal issues. For using the fanon names, there would be some legal hurdles to jump over and I'm sure they'd rather just come up with their own names than deal with that. Much easier, less time-consuming, and cheaper. But hey, more ponies still at least.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't they just use an actual Lyra vector instead of recoloring Twilight's vector? Same applies to Carrot top
ReplyDeleteДа они там все ебанулись!
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about the manufacturing process, but maybe it's a show of faith? The way these things have been blowing out of the stores, they probably don't need to make designs that are more pointed towards the showponies. Same with obviousness on not being able to legally use fanon names, even though I'm pretty sure we'd let them 'get away with it.'
ReplyDeleteAs for having like four designs for the mane six, that probably has to do with mold constraints, and those might change as they put more development in. From what I understand that's a bit slow, though, and WE WANT IT NAO.
Berryshine (vis moonshine) makes me giggle.
If there's something to complain about it's Lyra without a BonBon. xD
Plucking strings and broken wings
ReplyDeleteare the things that defined my Ponyville Summer
When Nice Nurse Mare, from urgent care
put my wings in slings oh gosh what a bummer
(But I'll abscond)
But you wouldn't care when you're in the care of
(Where I'll have fun)
When you're in the care of HEARTSTRINGS and Bon-Bon
THIS IS NOT COOL.
AEUGHASIUDHAIOWUDHA
Meh I'll stick to the fanon names. They're much better :) Although it was awesome of then to release these :)
ReplyDeleteSo apparently we all love fanon more than canon. How typical.
ReplyDeleteThat's the danger of fanon for you. Once you identify a character in a certain way, anything "canon" that doesn't agree with that perception feels false.
ReplyDeleteIt's like if you've had a friend you grew up with named "Tom" and one day, his parents say, "What do you mean 'Tom'? That's Herbert!"
It would be jarring, to say the least, and it's why "Heartstrings" is still really "Lyra" to her fans, why Derpy can never have a speaking part and why Octavia will always be Octavia, even if her official name turns out to be "Melody" or something like that.
As much as we love our background ponies, reading too much into them is still a two-edged sword -- and a Noteworthy hazard. ;-)
@BLU Medic of Doom No.
ReplyDeleteI like the obvious palette swap of the mane 6+big mac for the background pony pictures.
ReplyDeleteHasbro can't legally use the name Carrot Top.
ReplyDeleteAll the other fan names are 100% possible though... Plus we're better at naming the ponies than they are. ;D Sibsy once said
"Lol we don't give the background ponies names.... you guys do!"
Give up the names Blues, Lyra, Berry Punch and Carrot Top for something else? I say neigh.
ReplyDeleteAlso I'm liking the idea of the second one being called Berryshine Punch (Berry Punch for short) if were going along the line of fused names.
ReplyDeleteI'll accept them when either the show uses it or the products aren't re-colors.
ReplyDeleteAdd my voice to those thinking that Heartstrings makes a fine last name for Lyra, and in that vein I think Noteworthy is an awesome last name for Blues.
ReplyDeleteThe other two? Nope, sorry, I think fanon will hold sway there unless they actually use those names for those ponies in the show itself.
Also, I'm still completely boggled by the earth pony to unicorn switch for Berry. Unless they show her in show showing that her mane was hiding that horn all this time, I'm going with the explanation that they are two different ponies, much like how there are different ponies who have the hourglass cutie mark.
I also vote for Lyra Heartstrings.
ReplyDeleteBerryshine is pretty great, as is Noteworthy. I'll never be onboard with "Golden Harvest" though. I can't decide if it sounds more like a fake movie title ("Blue Harvest" anyone?) or something sex related.
You people are all so defeatist! The more people complain about the names, the more likely they are to use the right ones!
ReplyDeleteProbably. Maybe. Sure.
Am I the only one who thinks that Heartstrings and Noteworthy are GREAT names? those aren't even really the backgrounds, just mane6 re-colored ponies that resemble the background in toy form.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I am tempted to write a fic just so I can work in those names. They even sound cute together, Heartstrings and Noteworthy.
I like Berryshine more than Berry Punch
ReplyDeleteThe others, meh.
@Jackle App
ReplyDeleteOh, that made me giggle, Jackle. lol
@l33tsaber I like the way you think.
ReplyDeleteHaha, Noteworthy Blues...
Right, I have determined the hierarchy of officialness:
ReplyDeleteWord of Faust is unquestionable
Anything mentioned in the show is canon
Anything said by Jayson Thiessen is probably canon, even if it hasn't appeared on air yet
Then we have the well-established fanon
and finally what I hereby term 'corp canon', stuff made up by the toy department that has nothing to do with the show. Like how Celestia is pink, and the names listed here.
Fun Fact: The polish line refers to NOTEWORTHY as a female.
ReplyDeleteBerryshine Punch, Lyra Heartstrings, Blues Noteworthy and Carrot Top is a nickname for Golden Harvest. Happy?
ReplyDeleteThis is the same thing that Transformers fans have been dealing with for years. Hasbro chooses toy names based on if they can get a trademark or not, and sometimes this leads to toys having different names then the same character in the show.
ReplyDeleteFor example, Hot Rod is always called Rodimus in the toys, or Jazz is always called Autobot Jazz.
So even if they wanted to go with fan names (assuming the toy division even knows them), they may not have the name available or they may not consider the name distinct enough to get a trademark on it.
Here's an article on Tfwiki about issues with trademarks and toy names.
http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Trademark
It's easy to ignore names made by the less than imaginative marketing team and stick with the fandum names. Also it seems pretty unanimous that no one really likes the hasbro names so **** it keep the brony names.
ReplyDeleteIf there's a good reason for refusing to ascend fanon into canon, I'd love to hear it. o_O
ReplyDeleteAs is, though, I for one welcome this new batch of background ponies.
I'll just be sticking with the fanon names...
ReplyDeleteWhy would there be a legal issue anyways?
all of them except golden harvest are cool with me
ReplyDeleteSo like, are we using these names now or shall we still use our fandom names?
ReplyDeleteWell, that was disappointing.
ReplyDeleteLet's just keep the names we chose and move on, kay?
@Costanza
ReplyDeleteActually, yes. This invalidates nothing!
Lyra=Heartstrings lol nope
ReplyDeleteCarrot top= golden harvest lolnope
blues=noteworthy lolnope
berrypunch=berry shine lolmaybe
@PonyPonyPonyBrony
ReplyDeleteAgreed 120%. Yes, it's true that Carrot Top is not simply a Pinkie Pie recolor, but that's probably the closest we'll ever get. If they aren't going to do a new mold for Cheerilee, they sure aren't going to do one for a background pony with fewer than 6 lines of dialog.
So, how long until we see eBay listings of Noteworthy being modified into Blues (cyclops version)?
@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings
Berryshine Punch
I'm behind this movement, but to me Golden Harvest sounds like a breakfast cereal. Again, though, gotta cut them some slack on copyrighted names like Carrot Top.
I love Lyra Heartstrings, and I hope the fandom starts using it.
ReplyDeleteNoteworthy Blues has nice a ring to it, too.
As far as the other two go, "Golden Harvest" sounds like the name of a crappy band from the 70s, so nah.
And "Berryshine" looks absolutely nothing like Berry Punch, even if you were to ignore that obvious growth of a horn, so who really cares what Hasbro calls it?
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, just what are these legal hurdles exactly? I mean, none of us even own the franchise to begin with, so every name we've come up with should be about as official/legal as nicknames are to photo IDs.
@Costanza
ReplyDeleteImokaywiththis.jpg
@marioandsonic
ReplyDeleteThat. It's cheap IMO.
@Sindri Seconded.
ReplyDeleteYea...no.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep Lyra, Berry Punch, and Carrot Top thank you very much.
@CynicalMuse
ReplyDeleteI was just going to post the exact same comment. Lyra will always be Lyra in my mind. :)
Berryshine loves berries.
ReplyDeleteWell, no shit.
A lot of them could just be last names. Lyra Heartstrings.
ReplyDeletedat recoloring
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings
ReplyDeleteBlues Noteworthy
These I like... A lot!
Berryshine
Is a unicorn. Nuff said. She is not berry punch unless they stealthily were to paint the already subtle unicorn horn in her hair color to mask it. I could see Berrypunch being a nickname.
Golden Harvest...
Bwaaahahahahahaha!!!
Sadly, the only one i see being a real legal issue would be Carrot Top. Derpy seems to have been adopted, and even despite the fact that the name is borderline demeaning to some, to our favorite bubble flanked walleyed pegasus.
Lyra Heartstrings I'm fine with.
ReplyDelete'Blues' Noteworthy sounds great. Makes him sound like some upper-class pony.
Golden Harvest also works well, especially if 'Carrot Top' is taken to be a nickname derived from her hair colour (which seems logical).
As for Berry Punch, I have a theory. Berry Shine was Berry Punch before she discovered alcohol, and it's a little-known fact that alcohol causes unicorn horns to recede when consumed in bulk!
Silly Hasbro, that's not how you spell "loves wine!"
ReplyDeleteI'm ok with this! Personally, I'll stick to the fanon ones, but these official ones aren't bad at all and a big improvement over the previous recolor pony names. Honestly, their names sounded like Hasbro was tossing darts at words on the wall. I really like Noteworthy's name, as far as pun based names go it's pretty likeable.
I doubt that these names will ever become show canon; they didn't use pictures of the actual background ponies, just recolors of the mane 6 that are kinda close. This isn't a case of the show's creators finally giving us more information on the minor characters, it's somebody deciding that they need more named ponies to sell toys and making things up because the show wasn't introducing new characters fast enough for them.
ReplyDeleteFanon rules, 'canon' drools.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, at least. I will never, except for right now, call Lrya Heartstrings or Carrot Top Golden Harvest.
Oh, and the English description (especially on BLUES) sounds like bad Engrish.
ReplyDeleteThis is MLP, not Kawaii Pet Megu, Hasbro.
They actually LEGALLY can't cuz a copyright law is automatically in effect when something is written, even if a copyright claim is not filed.
ReplyDeleteLet's just use them as middle names
ReplyDeleteor just ignore them forever.
*shudders*
Golden Harvest is the Hong Kong studio responsible for all those Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films.
ReplyDeleteOf course, this means the fanon will eventually turn Carrot Top into a kung-fu pony.
Golden harvest = no thank you
ReplyDeleteNoteworthy = not that bad IMO...
No one is ever going to make me call ponies the wrong names, and these are what these are. The wrong names. Lyra is Lyra, Blues is Blues, Berry Punch is Berry Punch, and Carrot Top is Carrot Top. Not any of this Golden Harvest, Heartstrings, Berry Shine nonsense. Fan-names all the way. I still really like they put the background ponies in there. It shows they care not just to the main audience, who, let's admit, really would only pay attention to main characters. All that's needed are name changes and a Derpy blindbag, and my life will be complete.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking right hand needs to give lefty a talking to, can we even class action over copyright law if we wanted to?
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I think they can work as names, Lyra Heartstrings, Noteworthy Blues, "Carrot-Top" Harvest, she is not to be called Golden under punishment of flank kicking.
Y'know, it occurs to me that Hasbro's toy dept. probably isn't in charge of the show. So I'm just going to ignore these names until I hear them in an episode.
ReplyDelete@CitationNeeded
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, some fanon names actually can break copyright (for example, I won't be surprised if they rename Colgate because they don't want legal trouble with the toothpaste brand).
PFFFFFFFFT.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't even make new models.
Do. Not. Want.
In my opinion this is still not canon, toys don't have any credibility, dare I remind you of pink Celestia? I (and probably most people) won't use these names until used in the show...
ReplyDeleteBerryShine/=/ Berry Punch, one is a unicorn, one is a earth pony, maybe they are cousins though.
ReplyDelete@Anon Pony With A Name
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as an intellectual property attorney at a top international firm, the issue is that Hasbro does not own the name Lyra for the aqua pony with the lyre cutie mark (or any other fanon names). Whoever came up with it owns that name. They cannot appropriate intellectual property that they do not own, and then sell it for money. Otherwise, they will be subject to a lawsuit. It doesn't matter that no brony would sue them, their in-house legal team (and outside counsel, like me) would never let them purposely expose themselves to risk.
@ThatOneGuy are you a spy?
ReplyDeleteI like the fanon names better :(
ReplyDelete@Costanza
ReplyDeleteExactly. We can do this without fighting!
@Greenf0x That is smart, my dear boy!
ReplyDeleteTHAT ISN'T BERRY PUNCH! THAT PONY HAS A HORN!
ReplyDelete@Questionmarktarius
ReplyDeleteFan fic authors, get to it! Premiss: Carrot "Golden Harvest" Top trying to teach Derpy kung-fu. With a special guest appearance from Berry Punch as the self-proclaimed Drunken Master.
No. Just no.
ReplyDeleteI dare them to call Derpy something other than Ditzy Doo. I DARE THEM.
@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteWe have a lawyer brony? Ye gods, we are everywhere. And that makes my day.
Lyra Heartstrings - Me LIKE!
ReplyDeleteGolden Harvest - Neh.
Noteworthy - Not bad.
Berryshine - Actually I think this makes her sound even more of and alcoholic than Berry Punch. XD I like!
The more I think on it, the more baffled I am as to why there are legal reason why the fanon names can't be used. After all, they used DJ PON-3 in a TV commercial, and alluded to Derpy in another TV commercial. Wouldn't that also fall under the same principal here, or am I missing something completely obvious?
ReplyDeleteOkay, aside from Golden Harvest they're all pretty good, and workable. Ultimately, I like the idea that most ponies actually have complicated names like "Pinkamena Diane Pie" and have gone with simpler versions among their friends... so it's just a matter of wrangling the offical name together with the fandom name.
ReplyDeletePeople already seem to be embracing Lyra Heartstrings. I like both Noteworthy Blues or Blues Noteworthy, myself, and the suggested Berryshines Punch works all right.
And really, if I were named "Golden Harvest", I would totally go by a nickname instead.
@Shadowdemon137 Hello, we've covered that. Now we're talking about copyright.
ReplyDeleteSo, Hasbro nicknamed some of the background characters?
ReplyDeleteAlso, for all the angry types, think of it this way, these aren't the ponies from the show. We already have evidence from the show that cutie marks aren't necessarily unique. Plus, since they recolors and don't actually look like the characters from the show, just say they aren't the characters from the show. Golden Harvest, for example, is just a pony who has similar colors and the same cutie mark as Carrot Top. These toys are simply other background ponies from the show, not the ones we named. There, done. You're welcome.
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteSo, in other words, none of this would've been an issue if the fandom had NOT named the background ponies to begin with. XD; This speaks of irony to me.
@RinellaWasHere
ReplyDeleteYou sure do. Also, my sister is an OB/GYN, and I'm working on converting her, so we may have a doctor soon as well! :)
@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDelete@DeathMetalPony
You learn something new everyday. Thank you for the explanation, bronies! =)
Oh man oh man, I just wrote a fanfic where Lyra's last name is Heartsong. Now I desperately wish I had made it Heartstring instead, so I could pretend to be psychic!
ReplyDelete. . . maybe I can pretend to be SLIGHTLY psychic?
@MrDiscord: "it seems pretty unanimous that no one really likes the hasbro names"
ReplyDeleteUm, what? I haven't yet bothered with a comment-by-comment count (yet), but Noteworthy and Berryshine seem to have about as many fans as detractors, and while Heartstrings isn't popular by itself, Lyra Heartstrings seems to be pretty well-received.
I can speak only for myself, but I think it'd be a good idea to adopt 'Lyra Heartstrings' and 'Blues Noteworthy' as the full names of those respective background ponies. 'Berryshine Punch' is OK, though I still maintain that Berryshine isn't the same as the pony we've been calling Berry Punch, despite having the same cutie mark. As for Carrot Top, based on what I've seen in this thread I suspect 'Golden Harvest' will never catch on, and I don't think that's a big deal.
Some of you guys are seriously analyzing this a bit much. Also getting a bit worked up over some silly little things. To save money, time, and effort, they simply chose their own names for them. It's not really "canon". These are just cheap recolors so they can hopefully sell more merchandise. That's all it is. Remember, Hasbro is a company. And like any company, their prime objective is to make money. Not cater to your desire for specific toy names. I understand that Bronies do buy these and they make money off them too. But so do many kids. And the kids will buy them either way for the most part. And you and I both know so will a number of Bronies. Different name or not, we can still keep their fan names. Like the show, the toys also have many recolors of the same model. It doesn't mean that they are necessarily the same ponies we have created special names for. Even if the cutie mark is the same. We tend to attach names to certain ponies that are often used numerous times. Many places have lists of things like widely used color combinations and such already prepared. Which is often why you'll notice what looks to be the same character make numerous appearances in shows that require such things. Hasbro possibly used a similar thing for these. It simply saves money and time on having to make new toy molds, etc. Then they just tack on some name that sounds somewhat fitting and there ya go. That's how I see it anyway.
ReplyDeleteHeartstringgs could totally be Bon Bon's pet name for Lyra...
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings?
ReplyDeleteYeeeaaa- no
They're pretty nice names, IMO. Heartstrings especially.
ReplyDeleteMostly I think it's just cool that they made them in the first place, though.
@ladymoondancer
ReplyDeleteGO! Run and edit it now! People may not notice, and you can reap the rewards! Just do a quick 'replace X with Y', and your fic will be 20% cooler in ten seconds flat! (sorry, sorry, I couldn't resist. I know, I'm a bad brony)
Fanon overrides Canon here. Especially given that the amount of fan work on these guys (except Blues, never heard of him before this whole blind bag thing) is waay more than the sloppy recolors Hasbro did of Mane Six ponies.
ReplyDelete@Laurence Brown
ReplyDeleteYes. They can make parody ads (most certainly fair use), but they would never be able to produce and sell a DJ-P0N3 or Derpy Hooves toy. (The second one not only for IP reasons, but because they would be crucified for making light of folks with certain medical conditions). Finally, the ads were probably made by Studio B for the Hub (which is run almost entirely by Discovery) with little or no oversight by Hasbro or its attorneys.
I think I might 'shop the cards to reflect fanon names, and print 'em out for when I grab Carrot Top and Lyra Heartstrings. >_>
ReplyDeleteI will agree that Heartstrings sounds like a fine last name for Lyra. After all alot of her the fanwork about her and Bon Bon do "tug at the heart strings".
ReplyDeleteBerry Shine is really close to our name of Berry Punch. I think I can live with it.
Definitely prefer Noteworthy to Blues, it was a flimsy name I felt.
Golden Harvest is the only one I just don't care for.
All in all I'd say it's a very well done attempt to reach out to the fans. They could have easily not released any background ponies at all and just made new ones. Fingers crossed for an eventual wall-eyed Ditzy Doo model. (Derpy would never fly on the packaging sadly)
To me, the show and what its creators say is canon, not the toys. Otherwise, Celestia being pink would be canon.
ReplyDelete@ladymoondancer Perhaps you are SUBCONSCIOUSLY psychic?
ReplyDeleteI for one dont really like these, with the exception of maybe Berryshine. I just hope they dont go by these names in the show...
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteAh, of course. As a fan of Weird Al, I should have known that. Thank you for clearing that up for me.
Golden Harvest (AKA Carrot Top): "Loves sharing treats"
ReplyDelete(Flashback to all the times Derpy emptied her fridge...)
@Shadow Dragon
ReplyDeleteNot to rock your world too much, but if you look at the official color guide, you will learn that Celestia IS Pink. Just not the hideous bright pink of her toy.
So hasbro reaches out with winks towards the fan names and you still act like spoiled childs that legal couldn't use your exact fan name? Sigh...
ReplyDeleteI still love and tolerate you guys. And I love the names, Lyra Heartstring could work, and berry shine is close enough to berry punch for me..
I'm fine, as long as they make Derpy derped...
ReplyDeleteI'd gladly accept these names if they weren't attached to horrid recolors. In the meantime, Lyra just got a last name and Berry Punch just got a full name ("Berryshine Elizabeth Punch! You get in here this instant!")
ReplyDeleteI love Heartstrings!
ReplyDeleteNot so keen on Golden Harvest however.
@Laurence Brown
ReplyDeleteHehe. If they couldn't do parodies, I'm pretty sure they'd have been more worried about being sued by Katy Perry and not by whoever coined DJ-P0N3. :)
I don't think people would really take recolored mane 6 toys as official background ponies anyways.
ReplyDeleteI mean is Applejack's truck canon?
Neato but I'll stick with the names we gave them.
ReplyDeleteHahahahahaah! These names are terrible! Though making Lyras' last name "Heartstrings" I'm oddly okay with.
ReplyDeleteIf we're to use both canon and fanon names. Lyra Heartstrings and Noteworthy Blues are the only ones that works well.
ReplyDeleteBerryshine Punch also works... somewhat, though as far as I can see there's no way to combine Golden Harvest and Carrot Top and make it work.
Ah well, give them credit for trying. But I think we've grown too attached to their fanon name.
Thinking about if it's possible to mod Blues/Noteworthy into a Big Macintosh with some effort...
ReplyDeleteI like the full name "Lyra Heartstrings".
I don't particularly care about these anyway, but I like the sound of that name.
@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteAnd this is why bureaucracy is worse than the black plague.
Though I wonder if the fan names don't just fall under public domain?
@Jackle App lol. That made me laugh quite a bit
ReplyDeleteWow, we're going to go over 200 comments in under an hour; bronies are sure attached to their background pony names...
ReplyDeleteFor those complaining about these being recolors of other pony molds: That's the best we'll get; there's no way Hasbro can justify the expense of creating a new mold for a pony that's had fewer than 6 lines of dialog during the run of the series.
For those who like Berryshine because it sounds more like an alcoholic's name than Berry Punch: Am I the only one who dislikes that name for that very reason?
@Socially Inept Luna
Dangit, I hope someone does write that fanfic, else I'll feel honorbound to try...
Dem pictures and names.....Hasbro, y u do dis?
ReplyDelete@D. McCarthy
ReplyDeletelol Elizabeth
hate the names except noteworthy
ReplyDeleteguys, just because the toys have different names and stuff doesn't mean it's necessarily canon. last time i checked applejack doesn't drive a pink truck in the show. remember these: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lmfnnvuekI1qcoci5.jpg how relevant to the show are they? i guess applebloom = scootaloo is canon as well ?
ReplyDeleteSomething just hit me. It's probably about THEM being able to copyright the pony+name rather than about getting sued.
ReplyDelete@N.
ReplyDelete$$$
Heartstrings = teal unicorn with Twilight Sparkle hair and lyra cm.
ReplyDeleteLyra = teal unicorn with choppy RDish hair adn lyra cm.
Berryshine = purple *unicorn* with Rarityish hair and berry cutiemark.
Berryshine = purple *earth pony* with Cheerilee like hair and berry cutiemark.
IMO, the blind bag ponies =/= the actual background ponies.
