So, I grabbed some guys over at "My Little Remix" to do some pre-listening on all these Octavia/Luna/Spitfire/Scratch songs after some complaints about how "pony" this stuff was. Needless to say, things are a bit stricter now.
So have something that did make it through, and with good reason! New drawfriend creation music right here.
Check it out after the break.

ReplyDeleteAWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteCool, I like it.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking this!
ReplyDeleteI've already listened to this song at least 5 times, nice work zahqo, hope to see more good stuff from you in the future.
ReplyDeleteI like it :D
ReplyDeletenice :D
ReplyDeleteoh wow, this is REALLY good!
ReplyDeleteamazingness
ReplyDeleteyou guys do realize that we reached 70 million views right? :/
ReplyDeleteOoo, stricter music selection. Part of me is sad since I like a lot of the songs that were hardly pony related...
ReplyDeletebut on the other hand there is just too much stuff out there now. I have a good 100 songs in my play later queue because there are too many submissions these days. We could use a form of quality control that limits us a bit.
There can never be too much pony music.
ReplyDeleteNEVER.
I'm a hipster, I downloaded it when it still had 41 views.
ReplyDeleteI cheated. That was made by admins on the ponychat.net IRC network, and it was linked in #bronystate.
I am definitely liking this!
ReplyDeleteAnd then I asked him for this song for my Rock Band project. We'll see what he says...
ReplyDeleteSounds great, but I gotta ask. We're all aware we hit 70 million a while back right? Where are all the banners and posts about it?
ReplyDeleteQuite heartfelt, it makes you think.
ReplyDeleteAlso, 70 mil, woot!
Great song for a 70 mil pageview milestone
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH, I remember when I first heard this when he started working on it, not its on EQD, no bloody way. Awesome.....
ReplyDelete@banannagram Lol, I first heard it when it was only 2 minutes long, It helps when your a admin :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what to say, other then that I really,really like this.
ReplyDeleteThis is defiinitly goning in my pony playlist on my MP3 player.
ReplyDeleteRegarding music selection becoming stricter:
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean that purely original instrumental songs, such as Not a Clever Pony's "For the New Lunar Republic", Pinkie Pie Swear's "Luna, Please Fill my Empty Sky", and Makkon's "A Waltz for Trixie" will have no place in the music posts anymore? That would make me a sad pony.
This song well deserves the exclusive EQD feature, and it's the first song with the new standard to make it through. Congrats, zahqo! You deserve every bit of praise you get!
ReplyDelete@Bugsydor I certainly hope not, but it sounds like this will probably be the case. A shame, since I listen to some of the instrumental pieces (like Avast Octavia's Plot, even though it is just a remix of an already existing song) on an almost daily basis and am always keeping my ears open for new good ones.
ReplyDeleteWow. I must say, I am impressed with this one. The singing is quite good. Lyrics are good. Just sounds great and is a wonderful composition. Definitely going into my music folder. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd it was linked in #bronystate early on? Figures. I'm always absent when all the good stuff happens. lol
Methinks Seth should make a post that goes over the new policies and general goings-on of the site.
ReplyDeleteSome things I want to ask:
-What are the specific rules regarding music submissions?
-What's with the CAPTCHA suddenly being implemented?
*sigh* I saved far more of the completely non-pony-related works than the pony-related ones. I don't like lyrics in the songs at all, and there's a limit on how much of the same few songs I can take on my playlist, so what does that leave me with?
ReplyDeleteNo Seth just no
ReplyDeleteI live for this instrumental music and like Bugsydor said this excludes all the awesome instrumentals like the now legendary For The New Lunar Republic.
So just because it doesn't lyrics it's suddenly not 'pony'?
I usually hate brony songs with lyrics (but there a good few exceptions and this Luna's ruse was good) but i listen to way more ones without and EQD has helped me compile a very large playlist of instrumental music that I love whereas before I struggle to find music I liked. So don't just be so damn ridiculous as to exclude all non lyrical pony songs. I believe they are pony. When I ever play Lower the Moon I can hear and imagine Luna's frustration and Celestia trying to reason with her. So don't say that instrumentals are not pony enough. Sure I know most of the Octavia songs are just classical music slapped with s pony title but others really are inspired by the show.
I don't mind pony inspired music, some of it is very good, though I would really like to see more actual remixes. I think part of the problem was that people were taking music from other sources and slapping pony titles on it so they could submit it. There were a few pieces of music that were remixes of video games, or just straight up lifted from other games. (not pony games either)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tighter selections. I thought there was too much non-pony-related stuff in the posts.

ReplyDeleteI'm with the 'curious but doubtful' crowd on the stricter music scene. It seems like that will completely eliminate the original instrumental pieces because there isn't something readily identifiable in them. Those have been some of my favorites... Makkon, General Mumble, Notacleverpony and the like make up a lot of my favorites on YouTube, and I found many of them through here...
ReplyDeleteAs for Luna's Ruse. Now that I've listened to it, I must say that it is sublime, but the lyrics make me too sad to listen to it over and over again I think. Still, saved. :)
ReplyDelete@Bugsydor I hope not. that would suck and whoever is complaining is an ass
ReplyDeleteI think people are misunderstanding the new standard. Seth selected prelisteners from MyLittleRemix.com (I am not a prelistener, don't ask me anything about it). These prelisteners are more quality control than anything. Lyrics VS instrumentals has nothing to do with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd this captcha system is awful.
Don't worry you guys. I'm not a prelistener, but we had the discussion about songs without lyrics. They'll go through, the prelisteners know what they're doing. They are the cream of the crop of the brony music community, and that's saying something.
ReplyDeleteI hope these new rules aren't too draconian, some of the instrumental stuff was pretty good. 'For the New Lunar Republic' and 'The Stars Will Aid in Her Escape' are some Alicorn-tier pieces. Senator Myth and PinkiePieSwear also had some pretty good pieces, and 'Avast Octavia's Plot' has gotten more plays then I feel like admitting. Maybe you could give us a 'best of instrumental' every now and then?
ReplyDeleteOh, looks like Makkon and Gale Daze answered my question faster than I could post it. Glad that's settled.
ReplyDeleteAlso, totally agree on the captcha comment, that thing's a pain. Between that and the way my multiple google accounts confuse the system, I don't even bother trying to post from my mobile anymore. Faster to walk home and boot the PC than to try and type it out and have blogger eat it the first few times.
@Gale Daze
ReplyDeleteWell, that's a relief. Thanks for laying my fears about that to rest by reassuring me that we have humans making these decisions and not just robots with a ruleset. I'm all for a bit of quality control, as long as it isn't too draconian.
Sorry if my earlier comment incited some hysteria.
Anyone who has a concern over the process, look through the thread that created it:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mylittleremix.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=817
So what are the quality standards, then? Obviously we're all thinking "May as well throw out any instrumentals that arent obvious remixes", so... what are the standards? We know what they are for fanfics...
ReplyDeleteI mean, this guy's voice is pretty terrible, if you ask me. Really off key in places and painful to listen to. :/ Not much of a standard, if you ask me.
@Present PerfectYou still don't understand. Please, stop the petty complaining and consider that these people know what they're doing and have reasonable standards. You'd do well to read through the thread liked above you, as your concerns were brought up and discussed in depth several times in it.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit I'm a little worried about this. Isn't this just going to stop music noobs (like myself) from getting any recognition, and consequently, getting better at all? If nobody responds to your stuff, you're not going to improve at all. Now, if we end up implementing that idea that somepony was throwing around on MLR the other day (have pre-listeners direct rejected music towards a program run by a bunch of veterans so that they can analyze it and tell the artist what to do differently), then I'm all for it.
ReplyDeleteinb4 just post it on MLR forums; as much as I love MLR, it's really not that active :/
@Makkon:
ReplyDeleteActually, all that was addressed was the assumption I placed in quotes in my post. So, they're not outright banning things that don't immediately have anything to do with ponies. So what is banned? What is accepted? This has just happened and naturally people are curious. Who's making the judgments here? By what qualifications were they picked to have this job? It took a while to get their identities out, but we have this information on the pre-readers and their processes already. So with an institution that is, as I said, suddenly imposed upon the community, I hope you can see what the concerns are. Without any information to go on, conclusions have been jumped to. I ask out of a desire to know and apologize if I come across as accusatory.
Also, re: the captchas, Chydrego is a false god and he's calling me a ho. D:
Pandora's Box is open w/ this....I mean, "no instrumentals"? Ugh, no. FUCK that noise.
ReplyDeleteCan't you just do bigger music posts? I'd rather see a big Musicfriend post everyday instead of arbitrarily culling all the music submissions. :(
@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteThe problem with this is that if there's a dozen songs posted every day, noone is going to listen to them all. If there's one song posted a day, a LOT of people will listen to it.
You could always make a website that caters to non-pony music, and I bet lots of people would enjoy it.
ReplyDelete@Makkon
ReplyDeleteI read through the thread.
It appears that the pre-listeners is a very experimental concept, and if it is going to become efficient, it's going to take weeks of treading on people's toes before the pre-listener's find their stride.
The thread should've had a bit more discussion and consideration before Seth gave the pre-listener's concept a green light.
I find myself unable to define proper lines that decide what is pony or not. Really, I think it rests on personal opinion, but even that can be finicky. I, for example, listen to hours of pony music everyday, and I download and keep stuff from new artists only if I feel the 'pony'. As for more established musicians, I basically become a fan of all of their music, regardless of whether it is pony or not.
Established artists to me include Eurobeat Brony, Dr Dissonance, Jackle App, General Mumble - basically musicians who have been in the music scene for quite a while. They all have made tracks that are not really "pony" that I adore anyway. Naturally, these tracks haven't been shown on EqD, which I guess is fair enough, but sometimes I find a piece that I think is too incredible to be restrained by that simple classification. EBB has come out with music that isn't pony, but was easily better than anything I would usually hear on EqD.
In spite of what I've just said, I what I want simply cannot be done, because there is bound to be someone who disagrees with me for all the right reasons. It's this fact that I feel the pre-listener concept should've been discussed further, perhaps even discussed directly with the users of EqD to gauge reactions. Suddenly being told that music was getting stricter rules brought a very heavy reaction from users, myself included. I don't even make music, but I fear that the guidelines could hurt musicians out there who are trying to contribute to the community.
Please, please keep making music! This was fantastically done!
ReplyDelete@Present Perfect
ReplyDeleteSorry bro, I completely misinterpreted your post, I apologize. I'd like to know what the standard is too.
@Mattatatta
I agree, I feel that the prelistener concept was jumped on without enough discussion on how it should work or the standards. But maybe we'll see, this is really out of my control, I'm just the admin of MLR and don't have any sway on the prelisteners' system since it's been implemented by seth. I don't even know what those standards are either, and I'd love to know about them (if there are any).
Honestly I think it has more to do with quality than relevance, but again I have no idea. There have been a lot more complaints on quality than 'pony-related.' I know music is extremely subjective, but being featured on EQD is meant to be sort of a big deal I thought. In that respect, this has to be handled in a more objective manner.
Might be good for Seth to publicly post what the new standard/policy is.
My capcha was ingen, like Jurassic Park Ingen. How random is that?!
Excellent track. Straight to the infinite pony playlist for you!
ReplyDelete===
Personally I've had no trouble keeping up with the music posts here; even on my slow connection two or three posts a day are not a problem. I don't like more than one in ten, but that's me rather than the music quality. As to how you classify an instrumental only track as 'pony' if it doesn't have a show track remix in it...good question!
So wait... was the other stuff too pony or not enough pony?
ReplyDeleteWatched, Liked, Favorited, Downloaded.
ReplyDeleteIn that order. :3
The last thing I want to see is people going: "Well, its not good enough to get on OC Remix, better slap some ponies on it and submit it to Equestria Daily, that'll get plenty of hits."
