Best song ever!
ReplyDeleteThis song reminded me of the songs they do in Sweeney Todd.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite moment today was the chat exploding when the song started.
ReplyDelete@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteIs this not an original?
This was a wonderful song, and, for me, the redemption of this episode. =) Daniel and company, you are too awesome.
ReplyDeleteIs it bad if I don't like this song that much?
ReplyDeleteThe moment I was done watching the episode, I then went back and listened to this song a good dozen times.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have been able to have watched them sing this in the studio.
@Ten_Tacles
ReplyDeleteI'd say so!
NEIGHSAYER
This song was Awesome!!!,Still waiting a song from pinkie pie though :)
ReplyDeleteCoolness that defies gravity!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt seems that Derpy has become an easter egg.
ReplyDeleteHey, that totally is Derpy isn't it? Awesome. Gotta say this is my fav song so far. @Jelfes, I agree about the Sweeney Todd thing.
ReplyDelete@Sethisto
ReplyDeleteI was about to like your comment... Then I remembered this isn't Facebook lol
Should've seen my face when I heard that Rainbow and Fluttershy duet. It's gonna be a bit difficult to top this little musical number..
ReplyDelete@Takon No, it's definitely original. Just the way they sing and form sentences that aren't ridiculously elaborate and still make sense, like they do in Sweeney Todd.
ReplyDeleteLiterally the first thing that came to mind while first watching that part was Sweeney Todd, so there must be something about it that is similar.
Oh derpy u so crazy xD
ReplyDeleteLove the song! Looking forward to remixes and theme music for Tank! :D
The first song of Season 2 does NOT disappoint! :D
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for a download; Best song yet I'd say. :D
ReplyDeleteWhat in gods name is up with the faces at some points
ReplyDeleteThey just look, Wrong
@Ten_Tacles Yes.
ReplyDelete@Xenpod I agree, the faces did look a bit off at times.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone noticed parralels between this and "what would Brian boytono do" from the south park movie?
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I don't like how the song has no element of self awareness like season one. I mean even in Winter Wrap up the ponies were singing at you. This song just has a joke line at the end of the episode to signal its self awareness. I still like it though.
ReplyDelete@Ten_Tacles It's ok to not like things! I love it, but you're entitled.
ReplyDeleteso ... is derpy a pet?
ReplyDeleteI didn't even finish the episode the first time through. I went back and listened to this 3 times before I let it continue! I LOVE this song. I also now want to see a full-length animated musical. Friendship is Magic: The Musical...needs to happen!
ReplyDeleteBullet with Fluttershy wings.
ReplyDelete@kylock
ReplyDeleteTwo possibilities:
Derpy is a chicken, and not Scootaloo
Derpy is stealing chickens
Derpy is Scootaloo's mother, no wait... NOBODY EXPECTS (etc.)
God I love this song, I mean a Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash duet! What is there not to love? I must say though Daniel and the animators did fantastic job with the song and sequence that went with it.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably just me, but I don't like this song that much. It had a lot to do with the style. I've never liked musical theatre.
ReplyDeleteDERPY! Why are you looking for Scootaloo?
ReplyDelete@JelfesGood I'm not the only one who instantly thought Sweeney Todd lol
ReplyDelete@Greeny's Manly Man Art
ReplyDelete*eyeroll.gif*
So awesome!
ReplyDeleteyou notice that Dash sees derpy in the coop right?
A song with Rainbow dash AND Fluttershy only?!? You cannot make a song that is better than this.
ReplyDeleteI'm probably going to be chased by an angry mob, but "At The Gala" and "Winter Wrap Up" are still my favorites. Applejack is best pony and needs her own song (or at least a duet!)
ReplyDelete@naahdude
ReplyDeleteSorry, couldn't resist after seeing her.
But on an actual 'RELATED TO THE SONG' note, I listened to this quite a few times, and even caught myself humming/singing along. One of the mane reasons I fell in love with the series was the songs.
The song seems very Disney-ish to me.
ReplyDeleteNot like that's a bad thing of course.
Maybe Derpy lives in the coop and she was poking her head out to question why everypony was making so much bloody noise when she was trying to sleep. Or she just loves good music.
ReplyDeleteAll the noise about the Pinkie song and then this comes out of nowhere :D
Thank you Daniel Ingram; if this song is evidence to go by, then season 2 has retained the music quality I loved from season 1.
About time a new song pops up! Reminds me of the good Disney songs from way before. What's even better is my all time favorite pony is singing!
ReplyDelete@gray brain
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't really see any resemblance. Now there is What Would Heimerdinger Do?, THAT song is a copy of the Brian Botano
I don't know what it is about the faces, but that particular toothy smile expression just does not look right - it stands out every time I see it and it's driving me nuts!
ReplyDeleteThe song itself was absolutely wonderful, even if I can't place the inspiration. If it's wholly original, that's some seriously fantastic work, Daniel Ingram.
So Derpy has joined Pinkie Pie in being Scootaloo?
ReplyDeleteDem smiles...
ReplyDelete@Leeky
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's their way of trying to get the fandom off the whole damn scootaloo-is-a-chicken thing, by doing stuff that associates other ponies with chickens much more strongly than scootaloo ever was.
Who's next for the chicken-treatment?
The song didn't sound right to me. Something was annoying.
ReplyDeleteI think it is because I dont like it when they singing an conversation.
I love that header image so much. Seriously.
ReplyDelete@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteFirst thing that came to my mind was actually Dr. Horrible.
I've only seen Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd but even I can tell that "May The Best Pet Win" is so wonderfully freakin' Sondheim.
ReplyDeleteThe strange smiles are because their mouth are bigger (wider).
ReplyDeleteThe Teaser Pic Changed! I...I'm still a bit creeped out by this angle of Ponies....but it's STILL a great song.
ReplyDeleteQuite a different style to previous songs. It's not as immediately catchy as others so far, but it's unbelievably cute.
ReplyDeleteThere's no movement in the eyes or cheeks! That's the problem!
ReplyDeleteLike some others I don't really get why people get all crazy about this song.
ReplyDeleteIf anything it felt to me like the show is trolling itself again by showing a darn mainstreamish musical number - the style was nothing new to me, it had the ridiculous WE SING INSTEAD OF TALKING, the faces of Fluttershy just made her look ridiculous as well as Rainbow Dash (like I said - show trolling itself), the text had the same style (Let's sing about everything and jump from one conclusion to anothaaaaaa~ and dance to it as well~) UGH!
It is just my opinion. But it is a mistery how Seth can really say Ingram outdid himself this time. If anything, I'd say this song has a musical feeling and is better then what you usually would find on a Kid's show. But in terms of music, it was in my humble opinion the worst presented in the show so far. Trolling itself "Yes, this show is kinda musical you kno". No kidding. I can think of a DOZEND of musical numbers similar to this song. *shakes head*
Smiles and Derpy...
ReplyDeletehnnnnnnggg
@gray brain
ReplyDeleteYes, I actually did notice that! Glad I'm not the only one thinking that.
Anyway, awesome song!
If I don't see someone do a skit of this at a convention in the near future, I will be very disappointed.
ReplyDeletelol Derpy Lauren i saw what you did there
ReplyDelete@Annomaniac
ReplyDeleteI it's a show for preteen girls. Stop viewing everything in it from your own limited perspective. Respect what it does for you as someone vastly removed from it's target demographic.
2: It's the first song in Season 2 and not counting ensemble songs (WWU and ATG) this is only the 2nd Fluttershy song and the 1st RD song.
3:27 Dat harmony!
ReplyDeleteOh and unless they change the name of this song it can NEVER be referred to by it's acronym...
ReplyDelete@StrangeNoise
ReplyDeleteor Derpy was just getting some eggs to bake muffins
Something about this picture is just.... wrong
ReplyDeleteThe character model is kinda off, this smile of rainbow is creeping me out. This is very deep in the uncanny valley for me, i hope it will not return in the next episodes....
I wanted a Rainbow Dash song and a Fluttershy song really bad. I got both at the same time...
ReplyDeleteYAYYYYY~
@Luxin_Nocte
ReplyDeleteIt's the lack of movement in the eyes and cheeks. When the rest of the face is static, the smile looks fake and unsettling.
MFW My favorite two ponies sing a duet! :O
ReplyDeleteBest. Song. Ever.
ReplyDeleteOf all time.
(On a side note, slightly creepy new smiles are slightly creepy)
Looks like Derpy was looking for eggs.... speaking of which I need to go check on my chickens.
ReplyDeleteWell, I liked it. The animations were nice, and the song itself was not to my taste but still entertaining.
ReplyDeleteDamn those are creepy faces.
ReplyDeleteThe FiM team has never quite got the forward perspective down. Ever since episode 2 with Applejack holding Twilight I've noticed it.
Awesome song but those new faces just....bother me. I wouldn't mind but they make it like 10 times in the song and it just stands out to much. Otherwise amazing duet and something I never expected to happen.
ReplyDelete@Annomaniac
ReplyDeleteIt's a different style than what you're used to in Friendship is Magic, that's all that's different.
And you're going to jump on the song for being similar to other songs out there currently? Do we want to go over how many versions there were of "Stitching It Together" there were before MLP did it? Or are you just down on "sing instead of talk" specifically? So did you hate Giggle at the Ghostly? Did you hate Singing Telegram? Did you hate half of Winter Wrap Up? Did you hate Hop, Skip, and Jump? Evil Enchantress? Cupcakes? So Many Wonders?
My point is that this isn't even the first time that MLP has done something like this. If anyone thinks that Find a Pet is as good or better than any of those I just mentioned above, then Ingram did indeed outdo himself.
It's a cute song. That's what people are excited about. It's a Fluttershy and Dash song, that's what people are excited about. It's long, entertaining, has nice rhymes, and really plays to Dash's strengths.
And if you say you hated all the songs I listed... then I just feel sorry for you.
Yeah I just find it hilarious how RD is all "Cutsey-wootsey? Do you even know me?" considering her reaction to the parasprite in Swarm of the Century...
ReplyDeleteI need it playable is GH III / Frets on Fire / Phase Shift. Pretty pleeeeeeeeeeeeease?
ReplyDelete@RainbowYoshi
ReplyDelete"It's a different style than what you're used to in Friendship is Magic, that's all that's different."
Massive mind typo there.
Meant to say: It's not the usual style for a full-length song in Friendship is Magic, that's all. For example, the full length songs are more like Winter Wrap Up and At the Gala, not Singing Telegram.
One of the greatest musical sequences for the show yet.
ReplyDeleteAlmost makes up for the two weeks of Fluttershy absence. Almost.
Initially, I thought their faces looked weird too. But then I realized, the animators are just re-using the same face they've given Pinkie throughout this entire show. It just looks a little odd on Dashie and Fluttershy.
ReplyDeleteHeh heh heh, gotta love those faces! EPIC FACE
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how a slight facial angle of 12 degrees in rotation can piss off so many fans. O.o
ReplyDeleteMaybe the creators were tired of using the same "side view-to-front view" facial expressions and want to try some more "3D-ish" angles that involve a bit more dynamic rotation than just "front and side".
C'mon, they're only trying their best to make us happy!
The only thing about the new musical number is that fluttershy had WAAAAYYYY too much energy and didn't behave like herself. In my opinion, everything else is fine.
Just.... for Celestia's sake... just keep fluttershy as the mellow, loveable girl I've always loved.
I don't mind a flutter-rage here and there, but please keep her flutterSHY, rather than energetic and bold.
The song's not bad, but it's not "omg best song ever". It's somewhat like a Disney song, and gets better as it goes on. But even at its best it's not nearly as good as Winter Wrap Up.
ReplyDeleteSo, Ten_Tacles and anyone else that didn't really like this song as much as you would imagine you should have, given other peoples' reactions to it, don't worry, there's nothing wrong with you.
hmmmm.............ponies got 20% cooler :D
ReplyDeleteDerpy went to visit Scootaloo.(she got a little mixed up)
ReplyDelete@helldiver450
ReplyDeletehttp://i.imgur.com/H5SpR.jpg Give this a gander and tell me what you think. :P
Yeah, seeing ponies other than Pinkie with that smile is kind of weird...
ReplyDeleteShit was Disney Quality. Just listen to that backing track. TOP NOTCH! I wish this episode was animated in house.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like this that much. The animation was squarely in the uncanny valley. The header image for this article is just creepy! Also, it seemed to get the characterization of Fluttershy off.
ReplyDeleteIt was alright, but not THAT great.
@helldiver450
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I'm pissed of by their artistic decisions, I am genuinely creeped out by some seconds of animation in this otherwise great musical number, and it seems i'm not the only one.
@YetAnotherBrony
ReplyDeleteStill this song bears some resemblance to both "at the gala" and the main theme. Where RD sings "Hold a contest" (of speed)she could as well have sung "At the gala" =)
And I agree, Applejack is best and she needs her own song, her own episode and... uhm... mooaaar!!!
@RainbowYoshi
ReplyDeleteWhat really is astonishing me is how every single fandom reacts to criticism. I was a bit harsh, I agree. And I went bad on Sethisto's comment. But that you already start putting foul words into my mouth is really not a nice move, dearest brony. I'll not try to get personal, but try to make my statements more solid. Or Simply reply to you.
1) I don't hate anything. Understood? Good.
2) A different style? You could say that, but then again, you're getting wishy-washy. MLP-FiM has ALWAYS been a show with musical influence. I can hear it within Stich by Stich in Ingram's version of it - A version I love, and I know the original, I have no problem with that song, it is one of my favourits; I can hear it in "Winter Wrap Up", a song which sounds VERY similar to a STING song, still no problem with it, and so on and so forth. I grew up with Musicals, they are what brought me into making music and into singing by myself.
2) Now what do you mean exactly when you say MLP hasn't done something like this before? Bringing a musical number? Or doing a musical number in this style? This SPECIFIC kind of musical style? This specific kind of a musical number is, in my opinion, the kind of musical number people bring up when they want to show the ridiculousness of a musical. And I say this by KNOWING the other great musical songs that have been within the series so far. It's just that this song shows nothing special or great to me. It is long, it includes a lot of simple singing and dancing and that's it. A lot of musicals do it like this and it doesn't become more creative because of that. The OTHER musical show numbers show me that you CAN make your musical number something special. In this case, again, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION! - this is not fulfilled.
3) Thank you for bringing this up. I concider myself being a brony, but it seemed that I put my eye onto other things within the song then you - or others - did. You say the song plays to Fluttershy's strenth, it's Rainbow'ish kind of - whatever. Granted, everything. You might be right about it.
Yet- in my eyes, this sounds more like Fan-Bonus. I didn't feel the stuff mentioned above, and I love the song just as much as you do. Maybe when you mix 2 extremed just like Dashy and Shy, you have to come up with a song like this, might be true. Then I'm just not a fan of it or would've done it in another way. *shrugs* Again. MY opinion. Doesn't mean I hate anything.
And yes, I know it is a song for little children in the original, people who usually don't know that much about music or musicals as you or me do. But well - It's not like it has been a problem for guys before to say how great or create the songs are while STILL BEING a TV show for girls. I just thought it'd be right for me to say that I think this song is not as good as the previous ones.
And please, if you feel the urge to comment onto something I posted, don't be straight impolite into my face. I expect more from members of a fandom that love to put the terms love and tolerance onto their flag. Thank you.
Fluttershy was just excited that one of her friends wanted to love an animal, too. We've seen that her personality changes completely as soon as animals are involved in the equation.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think we need to accept that these "ponies" really don't look much like horses when seen from head on. And I'm personally cool with that, since I've never liked horses that much and think the characters look awful when drawn "realistically."
ReplyDeleteWait a minute... how does Rainbow Dash know what a bullet is?
ReplyDeleteI think that all the new facial expressions are tested on Rainbow Dash. The "Wub" in Applebuck Season, the one when she's on the floor in The Cutie Mark Chronicles, and recently the one where she was on the bench in Lesson Zero. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteAmazing song, one of the best of the show
ReplyDeleteThis was by far the worst song in MLP. Why? Because it was a musical... MUSICAL! I hate musicals... They are half sung and half spoken what is simply silly, unnatural and did I mention: silly? Furthermore, drawing of Fluttershy and RD was bad. One of the best thing with MLP was always how ponies were drawn. They went far from their own canon in this episode. Very bad idea imo. Anthropomorphising (I hope that such word exists in english) of ponies creeps me out. I can understand searching for new ideas but it was a failure and I hope it will be dropped. Also Fluttershy went out of character with her strong singing voice. It simply didn't suit here in some parts of the song.
ReplyDeleteStill, generally the episode was very good with some awesome moments. I'm rly looking forward for Pinkie's song. Topping Art of The Dress and Winter Wrap Up which became one of my favs among Led Zeppelin and Republika's songs will be pretty much impossible but the best pony, Diane Pie, always provides unspoiled joy :)
In this episode, we learned that ponies know about bullets, tanks, and have invented the guillotine. They get scarier and scarier with each passing week.
ReplyDeleteI like that under the notes part of the song information, It says "Scootaloo is the best pony." I find it amusing that someone who is able to make an MP3 our of the episode can misspell Fluttershy that wrong~
ReplyDeleteSounds like a combination of By the Sea and Pirelli's Magical Elixir from Sweeney Todd.
ReplyDeleteAwesome song !!!
ReplyDeleteIt took us 7 episodes to get a new one, but it worhted it. Yes it's a musical-style song, which I find. A little variety, and I like musicals anyways :)
But regardless of how much you like this style of music you can hardly argue it was really well made and high quality. Personally I believe Mr. Ingram is using MLP to experiment ;-)
Anyhow. I see some people mentioning the word bullet, and it kinda struck me as well.
So did the tank.
Oh well, let's not take this too seriously, shall we?
This is high, musical-like quality. Incredible! When is this hitting Broadway? Seriously.
ReplyDelete@Ewyndall
ReplyDeleteYeah, when do us bronies ever take anything too seriously. Sarcasm aside tanks were already mentioned in art of the dress so I didn't really notice it much the second time around.
@NickBeat88
ReplyDeleteFrom the recent Fancy Revolution...
i find that from 2:56 onward is the best part of the song.
ReplyDeleteIt's odd. Everyone either seems to hate it for essentially being right out of a musical/just a sung conversation/bullets in Equestria/other or love it for... actually, unspecified reasons. Where's the middle ground?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I enjoyed it, but it's not my favorite. I'd say out of the major numbers, I'd rank it third behind At the Gala and Art of the Dress.
(Also, AJ, as best pony, needs a solo.)
An amazing song, but please for the love of all things pony change the picture before the break to ANYTHING but those hideous faces
ReplyDelete@NickBeat88
ReplyDeleteThe rock you put in a sling is also called a bullet, they have swords so they probably have slings too.
Fluttershy seems out of character because of how excited she is that Dash wants a pet. It's basically the same thing that happened when she first met Spike.
ReplyDeleterainbow and flutetrshy duet awesome and yay
ReplyDeleteSong was not bad.
ReplyDeleteEpisode, I repeat what I said in the episode post
@Spazturtle
ReplyDeleteThey have bows, spears (diamond dogs), catapults and swords so they must have slings.
I like the smiley faces. It's cute in a cheesy way. Anyone who thinks it's creepy, you should probably cut down on all the nasty, gory, twisted stuff you watch and read. It really does affect your brain, you know.
ReplyDeleteSame with the song. It's cheesy, but really who cares, I like it. There's a distinct lack of cheesy cute humor in the entertainment world. I guess it's "uncool" or something.
This song redeemed the episode's predictability. How can people hate a FS and RD duet? I've been waiting for these two to have a song for ages, and they get an epically long duet!
ReplyDeleteI personally found FS's strong voice to be completely in-character, we've seen that she gets louder when excited or upset, and she's super excited about being able to help RD find a good pet, not to mention it would help one of her animal friends as well.
I also don't see what's wrong with it being in a musical style. Sure some people don't like musicals, but this shows that the staff can do a variety of different styles, and do them well. As for the song not being somewhat self-aware like the others, this song is two characters singing/discussing to each other, whereas other songs were sung to no one in particular.
@kylock I call dibs on her as my pet.
ReplyDeleteI have a limited (but existent) knowledge of animation, I would say the "creepy faces" are mainly the result of proportional issues. The show uses an extremely neotenic ("baby cute") style, and that style heavily favors small mouths and teeth - the very opposite of that particular shot - as well as large eyes. These things aren't bad in themselves - they are in fact very common stylistic animation tropes. However, the combination is problematic in this case, because the characters eyes take up such a large portion of their faces. If you study the image, you will notice that their mouths are actually closer to their eyes than their muzzles, and those proportions are just plain wrong by human standards. Hence, the creepiness.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame it came out that way, because that the animation during the episode was really impressive overall. You can tell the animators are pushing the envelope this season. On the plus side, its only expect that they will come up with some duds until they get everything down. We should see things settle down as the season goes on.
I liked the musical number, by the way. Yes, it is very typical, but that actually made me appreciate it as a musical, rather than pop song. It also helps that it is by far the most ambitious number yet compositionally.
The episode itself was simple, but it worked. Not my favorite, but still lot's of radicalness during individual scenes. I can even buy the tortoise. And no, no one was out of character - Fluttershy is just exuberant and naive with her good intentions.
So what does Fluttershy know about there being nothing wrong with having "riches aplenty"? O_o
ReplyDeleteYou should of seen my face when I heard a music number coming on when the episode aired (I was excited).
ReplyDeleteThen you should of seen my face when I found out Derpy was in the coop (I was shocked).
lmoa XD Derpy XD
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure they've ever done singing in that perspective up until now, which is probably why our brains aren't used to it. I thought it was cute myself, but I love the "Jaws is singing" perspective better.
ReplyDelete@Maquabra
ReplyDeleteAllow me to offer my aggressive rebuttal:
You said 'silly' at least two times, and yet you failed to realise that this is a cartoon, so therefore SILLINESS is not only expected, but encouraged. You're taking things far too seriously.
Moreover, Fluttershy was not OOC, she was excited by the thought of one of her friends considering adopting one of her many animal friends. Fluttershy adores animals, and they mean a lot to her. So when somepony she knows is considering adopting one, she sees a wonderful opportunity to share her life's passion with that pony AND ensure that one of her animal friends gets a good home. Her excitement begins long before the song starts, the song simply captures the raw energy behind it.
I don't mind the way they were the characters were drawn in the song's scene. Yes, I can see why other people would not like it too much, but I feel that it is just new and different, NOT bad. These animators are brilliant, and it's fantastic that they are trying new things with every episode. If the animation was the exact same as it was in Season One's pilot, then this show would've lost a lot of it's appeal. As a show goes on, it matures and becomes much more refined - it's a trait of a good show. The team working on this show love their work so much, that they are trying to better themselves and improve the quality of the material they provide.
The new angles will appear jarring for some, but I like the new approach, and I cannot wait to see it perfected.
TL;DR
It's a kid's show, so expect SILLINESS.
Flutter wasn't out of character, take your rose-tinted glasses off.
The new animation techniques are going to seem rough at first, but to me and numerous others, they are more exciting than mortifying, because it means that the animators are trying NEW things to make the show better.
After viewing a lot of the comments about the song, most of you said it was good but not, Winter wrap up good. As to the rest, let it be your honest opinion. Heck I really didn't like the Gala song all that much
ReplyDeleteo_O How was fluttershy not acting like fluttershy? Maybe you should go back and... I dunno... watch the very first episode of the F-ing series?
ReplyDeleteAnimals gets Fluttershy excited. Seeing RD interested in animals made Fluttershy jump back into that. There is nothing more in her character than how she acted in this episode! This was how she was defined from day 1, just because there is a moment in every episode for her to show her animal crazy doesn't mean it's not there :p
Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash duet is best :3
ReplyDeleteAnother awesome song. Very different style from the ones last season, but still catchy and fun, nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteMr. Ingram, you are Music God Tier.
I think the biggest problem is that too much of the fandom has entered a dangerous territory... They've become obsessed with fanon and head canon to the point that the actual characters as they were originally defined have left them.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter how many fluttershy fics you've read/wrote or how you imagine this world to be... The fact is, it's not yours. We're just here for the ride...
Let the epic remixing begin!!! I love how animated their faces get during the final fanfare!
ReplyDeleteI still can't fully comprehend how fucking amazing this song is. It's left me totally inarticulate. Pure joy.
ReplyDeleteFor people complaining about it sounding like a stage musical song, just remember that it's still My Little Pony and remember how their songs USED to sound like with the older generations. >.>
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't Fluttershy's face there almost exactly the same as her joy face when she thinks she's finally helping Philomina get better in Bird in the Hoof?
ReplyDeleteDerpy?!!
ReplyDeleteSuch great music :D
ReplyDeleteFlutterDash Duet FTW can't wait to see how this will influence shipping fics
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long it takes the average remix to be made. (For example, a Super Ponybeat or an 8-bit remix.)
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard this song, something simply didn't seem quite right about Rainbow Dash's singing. I've finally figured it out though.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the longest that the show has gone with Rainbow-Dash on the screen without breaking into spontaneous guitar solo. That's not a bad thing, it just left me subconsciously confused 'cause I'm so used to it.
This is going to considerably speed up my memorization of this song. And now I have a decent-quality version to put on my iPod. <3
ReplyDeleteSo, according to Mr. Ingram's Facebook page, the song was loosely based on "Fabulous Places" from Doctor Dolittle (see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10AMqdJUcFY )
ReplyDeleteI can sort of see the resemblance. Really isn't as direct as "Into the Woods"/"At the Gala". Definitely a fun piece. Felt very much like something from musical theater.
This would have been an amazing song if the rest of episode was a musical too. But it wasn't. So therefore, this song is kinda out of place. It's not like the other songs at all.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, it's a good song. But it's a musical. They should have made the entire episode a musical if they were going to do that. And if it was a musical, well Daniel Ingram can have all my monies.
Towards the end their faces got wierder and wierder. I think it's their teeth showing a lot more, rofl.
ReplyDeleteI like how people are saying "It sounds like a musical" as if this were a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteOh the whineyness of Bronies on the day of a new episode never ceases to amaze me.
Cant wait to hear remixes of this awesome song!
ReplyDeleteuh i really dont see what makes this particular song better than those before.
ReplyDeleteA good song, but some of the expressions just seemed way off for them. Just seemed silly
ReplyDeleteYet again, it's more Stephen Sondheim-ish kinda music, for those who don't know: Sweeney Todd. They have done these kinda songs before in the show and it makes it 20% cooler than 20% cooler. Above all other episodes, this has risen and topped them all, with best song... and BEST PONY Rainbow Dash!!!
ReplyDeleteI was grinning ear to ear from this song!
ReplyDeleteIt was great!
All I can think of with that face:
ReplyDeletehttp://knowyourmeme.com/photos/202591-my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic
Anyone else notice that Fluttershy's wings flap out of sync during the bit after she talks about the seal?
ReplyDeleteAll in all a fun piece, though I admit that I wasn't super fond of the musical styling for the first 75% of it or so. Also guys, seriously, is it so hard to accept that someone out there might actually not like something you do? ReplyDeleteBeautiful song, but the new faces looked kinda weird, they should have used the lovely-old-same facial expressions.

It seems I'm not the only one who thinks that.
I need to stop reading the comments. They make me depressed. People can't just enjoy (or not enjoy). They have to pick everything apart. (Myself included, BTW. I pick things apart and overthink all the time, but I've found that when I don't, things tend to be more enjoyable. Being slightly naive isn't always I bad thing, I guess. If naive is the right word.)
ReplyDeleteI liked the song. That's all I'm gonna say. Not gonna pick apart the animation, the style, or even mention that they confused Derpy with Scootaloo. Nope. Definately not Scootaloo.
Such a cute song *_*
ReplyDelete1:48 felt kinda forced though.
Awesome Eppy showcased Dash's loyalty at the end and best song since winter wrap up don't know what else we could ask for hats off to the team.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, LIKE the new things the animators are trying. The new facial expressions and the comparatively odd-looking front views give the ponies more personality. It makes them feel three-dimensional.
ReplyDeleteLook at your own face in the mirror from a, eh, 15 degree angle. Looks kinda spiffy, right? Now look directly at your face from the front. Everything looks a little off by comparison. This is how REAL PEOPLE are. REAL PEOPLE always look better from a slight angle than they do from the front. Having the ponies be this way gives an impression that the ponies could exist in the real world.
I liked it when they made those smiley faces at points of song. Nothing wrong with showing off the ol pearly whites.
ReplyDeleteThe facial expression in this episode where of the charts!
ReplyDelete-I noticed the... different smiles/grins from a few episodes ago. Maybe I just need to get used to them, but they seem odd. Moreso in this clip because it happens so much during this song. That being said, it's not a big deal to me because the animators are obviously "working out" more ways to animate my beloved ponies and overall the animation quality was top notch, as always. I'm sure it will only get better over time once they work the kinks out.
ReplyDelete-Fluttershy IS in character. See episode freakin' 1 when she meets Spike for proof.
-This song only made me want to see a full musical episode with allponies involved. I thought the lyrics/dialogue was very natural (no crazy stretches for rhymes, etc.) and in some instances quite clever. Dashie and Fluttershy singing it made it BONUS! From now on I will be hoping and pleading to Celestia to give me a musical episode.
-Compared to the other musical numbers in the series, it's not my favorite. Winter Wrap Up, Giggle at the Ghosties and Art of the Dress I don't think will ever be topped. I guess because it was more of a musical dialogue instead of a full-on "song" leaves it without a catchy hook? That's not a bad thing though and I still enjoyed this number quite a bit. I replayed it a few times after watching the whole episode. Those two singing together was just great.
Another great musical entry and just after I had a conversation with some fellow Bronies about how much I was Jonesin' for a new MLP song.
Oh, Derpy, you so silly. You aren't Scootaloo. :P (I bet there are dozens of other comments like this but I'm too sleepy to read through them all)
ReplyDeleteWish I could edit comments...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, about the more-apparent anthropomorphism in this number. It's just another "working out" by the animators to give the ponies more movement. Yes they're ponies, but they're also CARTOON ponies. Standing and moving their head while singing can get boring after a bunch of songs. This was another "testing the waters" by the animators to see how much new movement they can get out of these characters.
I agree that some of their poses/movements seemed a bit extreme for a pony but again, overall, there was a lot more movement in this number, and a lot more character in their body language than previous songs. Give it time and I'm sure they will find a nice balance.
That pic u see, those were so awkward looking lip animation when they were singing.
ReplyDeleteDerpy opened my skull and placed a phalic object in my brain repetedly.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem with the song is that the last bit is awesome with the rest being... meh.
ReplyDeleteA walk through of my impressions with the song.
first minute: ehhhh...
second minute: *yawn* not very impressive
2:43 : OMG I'm tearing up on how awesome this part is!
end: Oh... it's over?
KnowwhatImean Verne?
Soooooooooo Muuuuuch Butthurt! dear sweet celestia everypony, it's a show made for little girls. granted the fandom got thrown a bone, but it's a show for little girls. you spoiled yourselves with the fandom while waiting for the second season and now nothing pleases you and your pre-conceived notions of what you want the show to be or not be. it's not Sondheim, it's not Shakespeare, but we apparently love it anyway. Shut your cupcake holes and enjoy the show for what it is, you whiney fillies. Fluttershy does not approve of this arguing.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the song.
ReplyDeleteThe animation is a little different, but i can get past that easiely its RD an FS singing. That just makes everything work. :)
What I somehow can't get past is how RD treated that Turtle, even though it ended Up as her pet.
Shes obsessed with cool and all but i don't think she would do that.. But hey maybe thats just the bleeding hart fan talking.
let's just hope there are more songs ahead of us.
OH SHIT, ha ha, I didn't notice Derpy there at first. XDDD
ReplyDeleteI pity the people who doesn't like it 'cause this song and entire episode makes me happy! It is THAT simple! If you can't get any joy out of this then you have to ask yourself: "Why am I watching this?".
ReplyDelete@Jelfes I agree with that. Popped up in my head at the start too.
ReplyDeleteThis was was great but seriously...this fanbase takes itself way to SERIOUSLY sometimes
ReplyDeleteDerpy? what are you doing in there ??
ReplyDeleteI think the song is really good, I've been waiting for RD to get her own song since At the Gala, but to get a duet with fluttershy? SO AWESOME. I love it's style.
ReplyDeleteThe thing which i don't like is the video for it, "straight on poines" should really be used sparingly because they are so hard to get right. Luckily when i first watched it i was too busy laughing from excited fluttershy just beofre i din't notice too much.
So yeah, not as good as "At the Gala" imho, but beats "winter wrap up" to be number 2.
Okay, seriously, where are our series of "Where's Derpy?" books? They need to be made.
ReplyDeleteEvery moment I don't listen to this song again is a moment I am spending actively resisting playing that song again. Best thing ever.
ReplyDeleteOh my God those faces. I had no problem with how they looked or smiled from the front before, Fluttershy's squee in Stare Master was adorable, but this is just creepy.
ReplyDeleteFallout Equestria now makes a lot more sense
ReplyDeleteThese smiles just creep me out...especially RD's
ReplyDeleteOkay, Bronies, don't hate me. I don't like this song. Many have already stated some of the reasons I didn't like it, it being a conversation, etc. But there's more to it that bothers me.
ReplyDeleteFor one thing, waiting so long for a new song, and a Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy song at that? This was disappointing to me. Fluttershy was strong in it, but I know Dash can do better than this. I've been waiting for an RD song reminiscent of her part during At the Gala, but this just felt cheesy and ill-suited. Plus, she didn't get to showoff her singing skills all that much, having most of her lines Spoken with Rhythm.
But, I feel the worst part of the song is the way Dash's personality is treated in it. We know Dash is cool, that's why we love her. But so many of her lines about her pet having to be "cool" and "awesome" felt hammered in, as if the writer was thinking "Don't forget, this is Rainbow Dash's one personality trait! SHE LIKES COOL THINGS!!!" But there's more to Dash than that and I don't think we need to be reminded every few seconds of her "catchphrase," if you can call it that.
But, it seems I'm in the minority here, and I'm glad so many other people liked it so much. It just... wasn't for me, and I'm mainly just disappointed. Not hatin', just disappointed.
@Ten_TaclesNot really, I didn't like it that much either
ReplyDeleteI like this song :)
ReplyDeleteThose two had the best shit-eating grins in that song, I love 'em :D
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you guys but looking at the their faces....it just so happy! I love it! :D
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who's bothered that this highest of quality song still has the sound effects dug in? I love these songs to death, but the background sound effects tends to get in the way for me.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE IT if they just released a soundtrack or something without all of that bothersome background noises. We have enough songs to make a sound track right? And the show started as just a way to promote toys. So why don't we have a soundtrack?
Otters and seals do not fly- that is my favourite part <3
ReplyDelete@David
ReplyDeleteFluttershy does not approve of your harshness, either.
I don't quite see the butthurt you're talking about; I see a bit of disagreement and misunderstanding here and there, some disappointment, some indifference, and a lot of enthusiasm. You call this whining?
This is not my favorite format for a song but I still love it. It's not something I can just sing in the shower because it doesn't flow like a regular song but I've watched it like 30 times now and I love it! I can't wait for more songs!
ReplyDeleteI still sing Winter Wrap Up and At The Gala on my way to work every morning hahaha.
When I heard Fluttershy begin singing, I immediately began going total Rainbow Dash... "OhmigoshOhmigoshOhmigoshOhmigosh!" Is all I could've said at that point. About time we had a song! For a great episode too!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I honestly don't enjoy this song much at all. It's way too divided in my opinion, and of a much lower quality than most musical numbers we've seen so far.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics are ALL over the place, it really feels like they force rhymes at some points, and at other points it just seems to trail off course. The tune is nice when it's consistent, and when the VAs are actually singing, their voices are great as usual... But the talk-song thing didn't really cut it for me (and my favorite movie is a Nightmare Before Christmas, so I'm NOT opposed to that style of music in any way).
At first I figured I was spoiled by Smile, Smile, Smile!, but then my friend saw it.
"Eh... It was Fluttershy singing..."
"That's not worth much."
"I know, but it wasn't that bad."
"Not the worst, but not the best either."
"Yeah..."
We also both agreed that again, we may have just been spoiled by the Pinkie leak.
...Then my MOTHER saw it.
"That song was... average."
"It wasn't that bad, it seems like they went for a Jack Skellington kind of thing, but... just didn't do that well."
"Yeah, plus it sucked."
"It didn't suck."
"It sucked."
I question how many people like the song for the song itself, or just like the fact that Fluttershy is singing.
On the flip side, the animation is top notch. Love most of Dash's expressions, and it also reaffirms my point that Tank is best pony.
Just... hope they set the MUSICAL bar a bit higher next time...
Kinda Reminded me a bit of a Musical play.
ReplyDeleteIf only Derpy was replaced by Scootaloo then this episode would be full of WIN! :D

ReplyDeleteI don't think "just the fact that Fluttershy is singing" played that big a role. A lot of people (myself included) honestly like the style, but I guess it's not for everyone.
If you consider, first off, that the shyest characters are often the strongest singers, I believe it can be forgiven that FlutterShy was so excited and... Well, loud.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, even humans make funny faces when they sing. A LOT of funny faces. And while yes, they are a little... Startling, again, it's something that you learn to tolerate and... Again, forgive.
And could anyone inform me, was this possibly based off of a Sondheim bit..?
@Adeptus Enginus
ReplyDeleteAlso, don't forget that not everyone likes "Smile, Smile, Smile!" either. I don't think there's anything in this series that's loved by *all* fans.

ReplyDeleteTwitcha-twitch! Twitcha-twitch!
When I was younger, I watched tons of musicals. Too many. I became a musical nut, especially with Broadway musicals.
ReplyDeleteThings happened in life and I went to noticeably less musicals per year, but I still enjoy them. This year? None...
But then I saw this, and I was back in that zone. Holy crap! They NAILED this piece! They got all the technicals down, every subtle detail was lovingly placed, and... Oh man, I got chills! When that cut to black happened at the end, I instinctively began clapping due to my past experiences with musicals. I've never clapped for a TV show before. But I did here, right there as they signified the end of "Act One." So good.
Best thing about this song is that it is a duet featuring the two BESTEST ponies ever. and Derpy is in a chicken coop.
ReplyDeleteThose faces they pulled towards the end creep me out.
ReplyDeleteMY GOD THATS SO ADORABLE!!!!
