• More Information on the Friendship is Magic DVD

A website called TV Shows on DVD has a small blurb up about the upcoming pony DVD (Titled Ponyville Chronicles) available for pre-order at Amazon.  The final tally for episodes on the disc hits five, with actual bonus material, though it is unknown what that will actually include.

I'm kind of wondering if this is supposed to mix with the other two Target DVD's that were released earlier in the year.  It would be nice to see an actual box set pop up in the future.  The bonus material alone sounds good enough for me though!

    2. Kind of ironic that I hate "first" spammers and I get a first post.

And I'm not Pony Joe, I'm Nostalgia Schmaltz. I just cba to log into that google account all the time.

    3. Bonus?

      BONUS!

      DID YOU SAY BONUS!!!!!??????

      VastaKustuta
    4. I may grab this then just for the extras.
I now realize that my life before ponies had no meaning.

      VastaKustuta
    5. Ooh Bonus material!
Probably some girly point and click scavenger hunt game...

      VastaKustuta
    6. Nice! If I had the money I would pre-order it.

Well, my birthday is tomorrow so I'll be getting birthday money... hehehehe...

      VastaKustuta
    7. *sighs*

*still waits for full season release*

      VastaKustuta
    8. I'm betting one of the bonuses will be Equestria Girls.

Heck I'm willing to put money on it! ...a little bit of money anyway. I'm on a tight budget and already made a dumb purchase today.

      VastaKustuta
    9. Well well well.
I did say I am waiting for a full season release before but...bonus material makes this kinda appealing and I feel compelled to reconsider my previous statement.
Though I will surely not rush to preorder it. I will wait and see how things turn out.

      VastaKustuta
    10. BONUS MATERIAL?!

My thoughts are running rampant. Could it be? A pony box set of every S1 episode AND bouns material released just in time for Christmas?

Is it too good to be true?

      VastaKustuta
    11. Bonus material?

And why no box set yet? Come on Hasbro, don't you realize how much you could make off of that?!

      VastaKustuta
    12. I'm sorry, the cuteness of Fluttershy and puppies is distracting me from reading, give me a bit.

      VastaKustuta
    13. MUST. OWN. BONUS. STUFFS. WHATEVER IT IS.

      VastaKustuta
    14. This is an excellent price per episode + bonus material = instabuy.

      VastaKustuta
    15. @Masquerade

Box set too good to be true? Yes. This DVD is 5 eps and scheduled to be released at the end of February 2012.

      VastaKustuta
    16. I put money on the table at least one of these bonus features is an incredibly easy interactive game, like on most children's DVDs. Not being pessimistic, just realistic.

      VastaKustuta
    17. If you know how Anime DVD's work. They normally add bonus content to the 4 episodes DVD's that don't get put in the complete box-set as an enticement to buy them now instead of waiting for the complete box-set.

That said though, still wanting a Blu-Ray to come out. Don't tease us, the show is already in HD, shouldn't be that hard to make into a Blu-Ray disc.

      VastaKustuta
    18. Five episode DVD? Sorry, not buying it. That seems rather silly to me.

      VastaKustuta
    19. Inbefore this release is US only and never arrives in Europe.

      VastaKustuta
    20. "No wait I'm allergic to adorableness!

      (This picture)

      *HNNNNNNNNG*

      VastaKustuta
    21. Hasbro, I love ya for letting us run wild, free, and creative with your world.

That means I will buy your stuff. But I really want BluRay. Please. Rarity considers SD totally unfabulous.

      VastaKustuta
    22. Most Bronies who buy it will probably simply buy it to see what the "bonus material" is. lol

      VastaKustuta
    23. urg...my birthday is still months away...so no money as of yet.
BUT I WILL BUY THE BOX SET ONE DAY!
      one day.

      VastaKustuta
    24. I know Hasbro wants to get as much mileage out of the DVDs as they can, but I really just want a full season box set like I can get for other shows. I'm not a fan of buying a whole bunch of individual episodes.

      VastaKustuta
    25. Bonus materiaaaaal!!!!!!!
i don't know what the heck it might be but i want it

      VastaKustuta
    26. Confirmed enough for me. Going to pre-order it now.

      VastaKustuta
    27. First off, I really think people should be directing their concerns about the DVDs to Shout Factory, not Hasbro. Shout are the ones making and distributing the DVD; Hasbro is simply licensing the content (which they own) to them.

That being said, it's not unheard of to release a single disc for people unaware of the show or casual fans. Shout Factory and Hasbro undoubtedly know this show has a large fanbase, and they know fans want season sets, but first they must see if DVD releases can turn a profit, hence this initial release. This is what Shout seems to be doing with the Hub's own Transformers Prime, which is getting a release in December; for now, only the first five episodes are being released, but that doesn't necessarily mean a season set won't be released somewhere down the road. Remember that Transformers, like My Little Pony, is still technically a kid's property; expensive box sets aren't attractive to parents and their kids, so they have to do a balancing act of pleasing both the hardcore fans and the casual viewer, and it's undoubtedly more profitable in the long run for Shout & Hasbro to cater to the casual viewer first, and then release a big box set for the hardcore fans.

Besides, this is Shout Factory we're talking about. They recently released the lavish complete series set of Jem, another Hasbro-made show with a large fan base. They are very keen on listening to what fans want. A little patience, and we shall likely see season sets of FiM eventually. Remember, good things come to those who wait.

      VastaKustuta
    28. Yes, bonus material! Also, it comes out 5 days after my birthday and close to my 4 year old sister's. Let the getting her to make Apple Bloom like pleading faces commence.

      VastaKustuta
    29. Bonus? Now I'm tempted to pre-order, but I'd still like to know whether this is going to start a series of DVDs containing the entire season or just a bunch of random episodes.

      VastaKustuta
    30. What I really want to see is Hasbro releasing a special edition for bronies, with ultra sexy extra features and commentary.

      VastaKustuta
    31. The bonus makes this a really tempting offer. And it should be a great way to support the series. I see no way that anyone could lose.

      VastaKustuta
    32. I guess everyone tl;dr'd my bigass comment above. Oh well.

      VastaKustuta
    33. @Ewyndall And so I see you in the chat messages.
      Epic comment is epic.
      *Shades.

      VastaKustuta
    34. @Nathan
Transformers Prime is not really a good example, since they're releasing what was the five part pilot series.

      VastaKustuta
    35. Bonus material?

500 bits say it's the alternate endings to "Sonic Rainboom" - we got to chose from three of them, after all.

      VastaKustuta
    36. Bonus material, bonus material, bonus materia-...
      What?

      VastaKustuta
    37. Bonus material? I'm willing to bet it won't be that interesting... Like stupid stuff kids to waste kids' time.

...Or maybe a karaoke mode! I'd LOVE THAT!

I also heard the Pony Polka PMV (the one with Weird Al Yankovic's Polkarama or whatever) was going to be included on a DVD release, but I'm not sure if that's true.

      VastaKustuta
    38. Bonus materials gonna bonus.

      ... Wait what?

      VastaKustuta
    39. @InkBluPegasus

No! No!!! We definitely do NOT want a "holiday special" :P

      VastaKustuta
    40. I'm still going to hold off on preordering until they at least announce what episodes are going to be on it. If it's the first 5 episodes, then it's probably safe to bet that they're planning to release the full season eventually. If they're just 5 random episodes, I'll buy it if they're some of my favorites or I'll hold off until the actual season set gets announced.

      VastaKustuta
    41. I may buy this dvd if its like the first five episodes with said bonus content. I will probably be the first to purchase it at Walmart! yay...

      VastaKustuta
    42. To be honest, the best I expect of the "bonus material" would be the Equestria Girls spoof. Still, I'm buying it; since I have the episodes downloaded off YouTube, I sorta feel obligated. *^^*

      VastaKustuta
    43. @calamari
Considering how well the Nightmare Night episode turned out, I'd be willing to give a Winter Moon Festival/Christmas/holiday special a chance.

      VastaKustuta
    44. Looking forward to buying this and buying it for my niece/nephew for Christmas. SO EXCITED.

      VastaKustuta
    45. I'll wait to make a decision on this until I know for sure what, exactly, the bonus features are.

      VastaKustuta
    46. NO, put out a box set with bonus features then i'll buy it

      VastaKustuta
    47. My birthday is 5 days before this. It's going to be an all-around good month. :D

      VastaKustuta
    48. Why are they so dumb... RELEASE IT AS A SEASON 1 BOX SET with behind the scenes, deleted scenes, unreleased music ect.. I don't want just a dvd with a few episodes.. Heck, I have downloaded all the episodes in HD from youtube... I'm willing to support the show and buy the episodes, but only if they release it as a complete season set.. And hopefully with plenty of bonus material.. like interviews from Faust, and commentaries.

      VastaKustuta
    49. @Nathan

      >I guess everyone tl;dr'd my bigass comment above. Oh well.

Yep. They do it all the time. Talk a bunch of sense, and watch the next ten posts be uninformed drivel parroting what the previous ten posts said. If they ever realize that giving Shout or any other Pony-intrusted third party encouragement to push through merchandise with all the trimmings, that it might actually bring it to fruition.

TL;DR: Do you hear that? That sound... off in the distance, like a low whine? That's the sound of "fans" whining that there isn't a DVD release, who will then whine that it's not in a box set, who if they get a box set will whine that it's not on blu-ray, and if they get a box set on blu-ray will then whine that they don't have any money and "why not just pirate it anyway", then whine when I come to their home and personally love and tolerate the shit out of them cupcakes style...

      VastaKustuta
    50. I think they releasing it actually as test "How much people would buy season set? ". So, if we wanna 1st season full set then we should buy it. They looking for how many potential customers they have.
Anyways, I'll buy it (as pre-order). Just wanna support this great company who gave us these ponies.
But I'm still waiting for full season 1 set ^^ It would be very special gift. (heh, I would love to get full season 1 set for Grav-mass)

      VastaKustuta
    51. Do you people realize that the chances for a box set of any current animated series anytime soon are very slim? Plus, Hasbro could very well taken the route most TV networks take with their animated shows:

      1) rerun the show to death
      2) people watch the network
      3) ???
      4) profit!

I'm personally not getting my hopes up on a box DVD set anytime soon, and the rest of you should do the same. Maybe a decade from now, but not anytime soon. (See step-by-step model above.)

This is why alot of Nick/Disney/Cartoonetwork shows have yet to see the light of day fully on DVD *sees the growing number of these shows appearing on DVD now* well it WAS true years ago.

If Hasbro really is biting the bullet here and actually putting the show on DVD, it looks like they are following the same format that anime companies like to pull. Which is release the whole series onto multiple discs, said discs only having a few episodes.

I know alot of you people are saying Hasbro is loosing potential by not putting out box DVD sets. If they are indeed going by the single disc method, you are very, very wrong. Hasbro can make even MORE money by putting out single discs rather than a whole box set.

So theres 26 episodes of the first season, the disc will have 5 episodes, at a retail average of $15. So i'm guessing it will be about 5 discs, totaling out to $75. If Hasbro where to do a box set, it would cost like, what? $25-40? And with Hasbro becoming aware of the potential money from Bronies, i'm sure they would love to milk them as much as possible.

If Hasbro IS doing the single disc method, i'm buying tham anyways. As $10-$15 is *a hell of alot cheaper* then the prices i've seen anime companies pull. (in Japan, some companies charge $60-70 for one DVD with 2-3 episodes. and thats regular DVD not Blu-ray)

      VastaKustuta
    52. Next year--Full season box set in a box decked in fanart ala Sonic SatAM with a bonus DVD of karaoke and some of the best fan videos

      Well I can dream.

      VastaKustuta
    53. Guys, guys, GUYS! If you want a season 1 box set, then BUY THIS DVD! Money speaks louder than words, and if Hasbro sees we like the DVDs, they'll be more likely to release said boxset!

Not to mention, you have to remember as far as the merchandise is concerned, they're still looking at this from from the perspective of selling things to little girls. They feel that their target demographic isn't going to care about behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes, unreleased music, and all that stuff. Trust me, I've seen this kind of crap before with another company focused on children's entertainment. For a while, they mostly released single-disc DVDs with 3-5 episodes on them, and the bonus features basically were just a karaoke section and previews for other DVDs.

But they got better, and that's because people were buying the DVDs! So show your support and do your part as a brony!

...You know, if you can afford it.

      VastaKustuta
    54. @SailorCardKnight

As I said earlier, this DVD is probably geared towards casual viewers (i.e. parents) rather than bronies; casual viewers don't exactly want to plonk down $60 for a lavish boxset.

Hasbro & Shout know the fanbase for this show exists; they just need to see if DVD releases can turn a profit first. Have patience, everyone.

      VastaKustuta
    55. Ha ha! The content has been doubled!

Shut up, I'm not giving it up yet.

      VastaKustuta
    56. YES!

I'll keep on waiting for the blu though. Can't afford to buy everything! :<

      VastaKustuta
    57. Buy a DVD or two as gifts for a niece or little sister, or even better some 16-32 age guys you might know. If they aren't into pony then you can both blow it off as a joke gift, no harm done, while secretly of course we know they'll probably watch it for shits and giggles and then get hooked.

      VastaKustuta
    58. Hasbro, you like money don't you? THEN MAKE THIS NOW!!!

      VastaKustuta
    59. I hate to rain on the parade, but the bonus material will probably be a "Sing-Along to the Songs" feature or a simple point-and-click game. Possibly . . . POSSIBLY . . . it will be some of the Hub commercials.

It's a kids show, it's going to have "kids show" type bonus material.

      VastaKustuta
    60. Sing-along songs is good! After all, the songs in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are all worth singing along with!

      VastaKustuta
