While we may lose a few major crew members from the FiM Team, the overall design is still very much intact. We still have our favorite animators, the majority of the writing staff, and several of the big names sticking around for the future. Having talked to Jayson at BroNYCon, I really could tell this guy knows what he was doing. FiM couldn't be in better hands.
I'm a bit late on reporting this. I forgot to set twitter up while migrating to the new PC. It's impact probably wont be nearly as heavy as it would have been two days ago, but I figured it should be mentioned. Thanks to Tim for the heads up!

ReplyDeleteMmmm... I don't think so. Like Seth said, there's still a lot of the original talent left in there. Also, this is probably more a thinly-veiled stab of annoyance at some fans. Let's face it, we're getting worked up over rumours of Season 3, which won't be out till September/October next year. We still have months of Season 2 left, and pestering the dev team over Season 3 is going to solve nothing.

And if the show declines in quality, who cares? That means that they'll have a fire lit under their asses for season four, and will be motivated to make it amazing, and make it even better than it was previously. So everypony chill out!
Also I cannot stress enough the possibility of hour long episodes. The show already has an hour of time slated for it on the hub (hence why they play the new episodes twice.) so maybe the FiM team thought, "Well, in for a penny, in for a pound!" and made it an hour long.

ReplyDeleteWhat was there to deny though? I don't think there was anything to dispute, and Jaysson doesn't now they're going to order more episodes until they order more episodes, I don't think the creative team are privy to internal Hasbro discussions on this stuff.
@Nameless Again, we know nothing. It's all hearsay at this point. 13 episodes might be the case, or that may be a case of lost in translation - perhaps the schism in the creative team happened after the 13th episode was written. I very much doubt Jayson will let the show fall into a lower standard because of this - not only is there us bronies, but also the behemoth that is Hasbro's marketing department, looking over his shoulder. As I said in my previous post, at this difficult point in time, the last thing Jayson needs is fans running about like the sky is falling. The dev team needs to concentrate on the show, and every panicked tweet is just going to worsen matters. Like he said, let them take care of the show's future. They're not going to drop it.

ReplyDeleteAs far as Jayson goes, he made a point in his hour+ long interview that he had the veterans train others how to storyboard and do all those amazing things, just like when he took over for Lauren.
I say we just enjoy the show, love the characters, appreciate the people behind it, and trust them enough to let them do their best work.

ReplyDeleteI'd be cut up if it ended next season too, because this season's been so, so great so far. But it must be annoying when it's still early days on a season of tv you've absolutely killed yourself over and people are pestering you about 2014.

-sigh- People are STILL being all doom-and-gloom about this? Seriously. Calm down. Season 3 has barely been worked on, hell, we're barely into watching Season 2! Season 3 is almost A YEAR away. So, yes, some of the more well know names have left, others have moved their positions around, but so what? Why does this have to mean the show is doomed?
ReplyDeleteDon't forget: There was a mass freakout over Faust having a reduced role in season 2, and thus far I've seen almost universal praise for it. I believe that the (rational) prediction that season 2 was going to be fine, because the crew as a whole was on the same page, came true. There's no reason to assume the same won't be true for 3; even with a few less original team members the ones remaining are still the same crew, with even more experience with how the show should be run.
The 13 episodes doesn't factor much this early; I believe it brings the show up to its bare minimum for syndication, so Hasbro has secured that and can order the rest once they figure out how much they want. Even if it stays at 13, it's still a new season and many shows get that few each season.
Call me optimistic, but I see Jayson's response as one from a guy who's annoyed about the lack of faith from some of the fandom. How would you like it if suddenly you were bombarded by questions that basically said "I'm worried that without 'X' team members, you guys can't handle it"? Pretty annoyed, I'd say. I'm sure most bronies were much nicer than that, but after the 100th I'm sure they all sounded like that.
Maybe I'm naively optimistic, but I see no reason to worry, especially when season 3 is likely no more than a handful of scripts and storyboard sketches.

ReplyDeleteOK, so I've personally followed the behind-the-scenes type stuff for several shows (especially Spongebob) for several years. I'm really interested in it, in how shows are made, the storyboarding process, etc. I've talked to several of the people who work on SpongeBob, and who have worked on other shows. So while people sort of freaking out about this new season 3 info in understandable, it's also very annoying just because, well, it's NOT a big deal. Let me explain:
ReplyDelete1. Crew members come and go on shows ALL THE TIME. Although it may be hard for someone who is such a big fan of the show to come to terms with, these people DO get tired of working on one show, there are other opportunities, etc. They are going to move on eventually, but that's just how it is. Doesn't mean they don't like the show, and it doesn't mean that the show is going to go downhill at all. As a matter of fact, I think we're VERY lucky simply to have most of the original writers staying, as well as Jayson. Trust me, many shows have WAY more people leaving.
2. "13 Episodes SO FAR". From what I've seen, sometimes a network will order only HALF a season of a show, and once the ratings and stuff have been better assessed, will order more episodes. This has been done with SpongeBob several times. Don't worry about it: as long as we keep watching, they will order another 13 for the season. So that means, if you DO get the Hub, please watch new episodes on your TV when they premiere, as this will help improve the ratings of the show.
I guess it's just a testament to how dedicated and amazing this fandom is, but really, I wish more people who are part of it would make it a point to learn more about what goes into making a show. There is SO much misinformation from fans who simply think they know more than they do about stuff like that. That being said however, I think it's awesome that people in this fandom seem so interested in learning more about the behind-the-scenes. So keep learning! Look at some examples of other shows: way too often have I seen someone assuming something (with how the show is made) is totally unique to MLP:FiM, when it's not.
I think just the fact that the crew of this show is so committed to keeping in touch with the fans is a pretty huge thing, and something that will probably help keep it 'on track' for many more years to come. That does NOT mean pestering crew members because of some paranoia you have! Please people, do your research first.
Stuff like this can be troubling, but it's NOT a big deal. As far as shows go, it's very, very normal.

ReplyDeleteI hope the series ends well though, I'd rather it finished sooner and keep its quality right up until the last moment, that be into it's nth season that is a shadow of its former self.
Even when FiM does end, the community will keep it going long after the fact. That is something we can all look forward too, right? There will still always be drawfriends, there will still be blogs, Tumblr "Ask X Pony Anything", there'll still be Equestria Daily.
At least be grateful for that!

After all, we have about twice the ammount of any uncountable number of great fanfics out there to animate!!

Just enjoy Season 2 folks, you guys are worrying too damn soon. I watch FIM on The Hub everyday its on (even the daily hour long blocks) and I purchase the favorite episodes on iTunes (which I have downloaded all 26 episodes of Season 1 and up to The Cutie Pox episode of Season 2). So yes, I am contributing to the show as much as possible. So even if the show should come to an end at some point, there is always DVDs and most importantly theres always iTunes!

ReplyDeleteOne quibble: watching episodes on the Hub will only increase the ratings if you're in one of the chosen few families that the ratings companies survey for their information. iTunes or the Hub website would probably be better options to have your viewership counted.
Still, I fully agree with Jayson and the others who are calling for an end to the panicking. There's no guarantee that the series will last beyond 65 episodes, but it's remarkable that we're getting even that many in this age of quick cancellations, and we're not even halfway to that number yet. For now, the best we can do is enjoy what we've got, and support the show and its creators however we can.
And spread the word about the show, especially among kids if you can!

It is wonderful now. And I appreciate the hard work that Mr. Thiessen has put into Season 2. If the show ends in Season 3, then he can steer it so that every episode is more awesome than the next: one story for each of the CMC to get their mark, one story for each of the Mane 6 (plus Spike) to follow their dreams, and a final three-part adventure story where Derpy saves Equestria.
I think everyone needs to put more trust into what the developer team is doing right now, rather than freak out about the future.

I'm sure he's just annoyed, and perhaps a little stressed out. Having hundreds of thousands of bronies counting on you has to be nerve-racking.
ReplyDeleteRemember, as long as these awesome episodes are being made, we'll continue to watch them, and in some cases, buy their merchandise. As long as we're watching the show, Hub and Hasbro will have no reason to cancel it. The toy line, and the franchise in general probably hasn't done this well since the 80s, considering all the other girls toys that have been released. We're going to get a third season, without a doubt. That should be enough... for now.
All good things come to an end, but let's not think about that now, because first: that end is WAY off, second: it's likely that future incarnations of My Little Pony, (and hopefully cartoons in general, particularly 'girly' ones) will follow in the footsteps of FiM, even if Faust and Thiessen aren't working on them.
Besides, they'll go to work on other cartoons. Faust has Galaxy Girls, and I believe Thiessen co-directed Pucca, which I thought was fairly decent.

Jayson has a point though: They've been doing their best to produce quality episodes for a very demanding audience. Jayson and the team haven't disappointed us thus far! Why not have a little faith them? Even if some of the major animators left, Jayson and the others will surely find other animators that are equally (if not surpassingly) comperable to their predecessors. Like Jayson said, let's enjoy what we have now and trust that the team will pull through.

ReplyDeleteTrue, random households are chosen for some types of research, but with the Nielsen Ratings, TOTAL viewership is also counted. This means that the more people that are present to watch a premiere, the higher the rating will be. For example, if a show in a certain time slot gets a '7.1' rating (which is high), this means that there were 7.1 million people (households I believe) tuned in at any one time. So no, viewing on the website or iTunes will not help with those particular ratings, nor will viewing on a live stream. If we could get this show to even a 5 rating, that would be an accomplishment, and the network would notice.
OK, so now I'm just going to make myself sound arrogant, but honestly, I've paid attention to stuff like this for enough years to, I hope, predict that there is only a VERY small chance that MLP:FiM will be canceled any time soon. From what I've seen, the fanbase is growing quite considerably, and exposure for this show is growing at an explosive rate. I've never seen something like this before...this fandom is incredible, to put it lightly. Honestly, the Hub would be INSANE to cancel the show at this point. Again, taking SpongeBob as just one example, and certainly one of the most incredible examples, it actually started out as a very low-budget show, with hardly any ratings at the start. Interestingly enough, because of the lack of high internet exposure at the time (early 2000), SpongeBob did not actually become popular until around 4 or 5 years later, and now consistently wins not just one spot in the top 15 broadcasts of the week, but several. Just the fact that MLP:FiM has been around for barely more than a year, and yet is as popular and ubiquitous as it is, and gaining popularity every day, is astounding. From what I understand, it's actually NOT a high budget show, which is just another reason not to cancel it. In fact there are SO many reasons to not cancel it that people thinking it's going to be canceled are kinda crazy (though again, it's just a testament to how dedicated the fans are).
And to reiterate what I said in my last comment, for people who don't want to read my way-too-long of comments: it 13 episodes FOR NOW. Again, from what I've observed, a network will often only order HALF of a season, then order the second half later. Has happened with SpongeBob, and other shows, numerous times. Anyone who pays attention to other shows besides MLP:FiM should know this.

13 episodes and release em biweekly. Twice as much time to perfect each episode's story, dialogue and animation. From what it sounds like, there could be talk that season 3 will be the last, but they are unsure. If the show's staff still has the ideas and juice for a 4th season and the show continues to be a money maker, they will get renewed for a fourth. TV shows usually get renewed for one or two seasons at a time, so the fact that there IS a third season and nobody has said specifically that it will be the last is a good sign. We've got at least 2 more years of pony, they will be glorious.

ReplyDeleteOn avarage if you watch some of the shows, the max amount of episodes is indeed around +26-52 episodes. And those both amounts are most of the times very ideal amount to start storylines and and close up some continuation-stories within the series.
How did Spike also put in couple of episodes ago: "Not too little, not too much. Just right amount".
I personally said when I read about season 2: "52 episodes, that's a ideal amount to close up the pending plot-lines, I'm cool with this." Of course it's great when series gets continuation, especially if the studio and the producer want to continue/has interest still working on the tittle.
And as I mentioned already already in another EQD-post, MLP:FiM has already reached the status of "Donald Duck", in which even after the original producing team has stopped producing the tittle, there's going to be other 3rd-party teams and artist working on the tittle itself. How will be the licensing and such will be handled in future, we'll just have to see about that, because most certainly there's going to huge changes within few years (only "most certainly" though, not quranteen).

ReplyDeleteI do wonder whether some of the factors governing FiM are relatively different from Spongebob. Hub ratings are still pretty low (perhaps a few hundred k compared to 4m for Spongebob in that link), so ad revenue is not that large. Toy and merchandise sales are what pay production costs for this show and are likely to be less sensitive to going into syndication than the ratings that drive Spongebob and most CN shows. The adult community cares but they don't think there are even enough of us to support a S1 DVD and so far we haven't contributed more than a few hundred thousand dollars via t-shirt sales if it's appropriate to project off my recent welovefine order number. Growth is good but not explosive, it's been almost linear if EqD page hits over the past few months are anything to go off of (adding about 10k daily hits per week, sitting at about 525k daily hits now.)
The main reason to be optimistic for getting more seasons of the show is that Hasbro is taking a long-term approach to Hub and the scheduling makes clear that the show has become the backbone of their kids lineup. I'm also hoping for good DVD sales.

Getting upset about the uncertainty of a damned television show is ridiculous, especially when you know that half-season orders are common.
Besides, we JUST saw episode 6 of season 2. Season 2 has 26 episodes.
I've got a life to get back to.
Heh. I'll be very amused when the official announcement comes out for Season 3, and the Hub has ordered 13 more episodes for a total of 26. :P
ReplyDeleteI think folks are needlessly worrying. Worrying won't change anything at all, so it's all rather silly.
Keep in mind this comes from a champion worry-wort. When the worry-wort tells you to stop worrying, that tells you something! :)

The show's in damn good hands, and always has been. They know what they're doing, and the Hub knows what it's doing in it's cautiousness. What will your worrying accomplish, exactly? Pissing off Thiessen and providing comic relief for the rest of us, I guess, but that's about it.

ReplyDeleteThe point is that thinking about it all right now is pointless, because there's way too much time for things to change.
Even if the news is 100% true, it doesn't mean anything yet. Hub ordered 13? That's pretty normal. They know they want another season but aren't ready to commit all the way until they see how S2 goes, at least the first part. And by that I mean in terms of toy sales. They make the order for 13 early because there's so much production time needed, that Studio B has to get started on S3 now if they want to do it at all. In three months, Hub may order 13 more... or may cancel the series, leaving three or four episodes stranded in mid-production. It happens all the time.

Personally, I think everything is going to be fine. Overall I truly believe we have a great season 2 ahead of us as well as, a great season 3 to look forward to. Jayson is 100% right, let them handle the future. Everything is in good hands (hooves). :)
