Can't say that I've read the fanfic. But judging from this comic, it's a rather sad story. And seeing Derpy sad and crying makes me real sad too. :'( This is really beautifully done though. Gettin' teary-eyed looking at it. And the bottom panel is indeed so very beautiful. Goodness. Strong image.
