    1. 131 pages of short stories? And that's why I don't plan on reading every fic that is made.

    3. all of these are written 'weirdly' and i don't like it. =|

or it might be the fact it uses words like 'you' as the main descriptors.

    11. Sorry about that post; I asked a stupid question, before realizing what I was looking for was in the first post on the thread.

Anyway. Yeah; I've liked these archives. They're amusing. Can't wait to read the latest one, after reading the last one, which I missed.

    18. Second person writing is so awkward sounding. It tries to push feelings onto you and it makes you do things that you might not do. It creates dissonance.

The reason why you can never get away with it in normal fiction is because most people will read the first few lines, go "ugh," and put the book down.

Fanfiction is much easier for it to get away with, but trying to create a masterpiece with it is...well it's possible, but there are a lot of obstacles you'll have to go through.

If you manage to write a beautiful story, find readers that would take actions like you said you would in the story, and if people love the characters enough, then it might happen. In normal fiction, it will never happen because publishers are not willing to print your book.

People won't have enough time to associate themselves with the characters. It might work here only because we love ponies. Since we love ponies, we're willing to give the stories a chance, even if we don't like it at first. Let's just say it's a very small market for second person stories.

If you can pull it off, then kudos. For the rest of us, stay away. -waves hands dramatically-

    19. DAMIT I cant look at the website because my College has it blocked.

    20. 2nd person has diminished my enjoyment of more stories than I can count.
The ironic thing is that it is a writing style designed to provide greater immersion into the character's role, however it frequently does the opposite, leaving the story feeling more detached.
The reason for this is that 2nd person serves as a great aid to descriptive immersion, but can be tricky with narrative immersion when the reader's own motivations contrast with the character's actions. The reader usually can relate to 3rd and 1st person characters better because they are given insight into the character's perspective and can adapt their own sensibilities.

    21. Oh wow, second person stories. They're always fun (and challenging)to read.

      VastaKustuta
    22. I was gonna write this long and epic post about how there are better ways to accomplish the same fic, how second-person only really fits certain fic genres, how wading through said genres is like being attacked by tiny grammar gnomes for every instance that I myself am made the subject or direct object in the narrative.

But then I remembered that SOMEpony out there clearly loves this stuff, or it wouldn't have been written in the first place.

Have fun kids, but try and remember that there is more to life than chat RPs.

    23. I like these stories, took me a bit, but they grew on me.

What I do, instead of sticking the character to myself, I more, like, create a character in my head. An obviously indicative example would be Skyrim (awesome); that character is, but is not "you", you don't go running around lobbing off heads and yelling a lot, no that's what YOUR character, the one in your mind, is doing.

The "you" allows you to have a clean slate for an pony that doesn't seem forced or intrusive. The elements of the character that are not included are provided by you and your imagination; think of it like a video game sorta.

Basically, I'm saying I break the entire definition of 2nd person when I'm reading, and apply it to a character that belongs to me in the author's world, instead of ME being in that world.

    24. @Muffinsforever

So basically pretend the 2nd person doesn't apply to me and I am reading the 2nd person, DMing as it were? That's interested but for shipping it's just SUPER FUCKING CREEPY.

      VastaKustuta
    25. Hmm, far less second person hate this time... looks like I owe GentlemanCreeper a beer.

Anyway, for those of you who have been reading these and enjoying them, thank you! :) I don't know about many of the other authors, but personally, I write in second person because I find it far more of a challenge than writing in third person. It takes a crazily long amount of time for me to produce a single chapter, let alone a full fic; mostly because of RL stuff and being determined to get the second-person perspective as correct as I can.

I do have a lot more stories that what can be found in the collections, so please feel free to have a read of my fimfiction.net page at http://www.fimfiction.net/user/Coffeebean

      Kindest regards,

      Coffeebean.

      You wanna know something funny?

This is pretty close to what I think when I read a 2nd-person fic, and I'm one of the authors for these collections. I can't speak for everyone at the SFG, but for some reason when I try to actually picture myself in these fics, I can't help but feel a little silly. However, if I imagine it as an original character whose looks, backstory, and other information I fill in for myself, I can immerse myself in them pretty well. It's strange, but that's how I make it work.

I prefer to write 2nd-person for those same reasons. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the 1st-person perspective, and I just don't feel comfortable shipping two canon characters together unless they've already been established as a couple. I suppose 3rd-person with an OC is not out of the realm of possibility for me, but I still prefer giving myself and the reader the ability to give the character whatever qualities they wish.

Also, fans of these stories should definitely check out the thread on Ponychan. The backlog of fics that have yet to make it into the collection is huge.
