ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that Lyra doesn't have more fanfics about her. Perhaps I just haven't read them yet but I don't see too many. The ones I do, it's usually a story with Bon Bon and that's it.
ReplyDeleteDo any Lyra adventure stories even exist out there? There is a few fanon theories that she's a spy for Celestia, so are there stories about that? A story where she gets her wish of becoming human? Or a story where she slowly transforms into one? The possibilities are endless.
Although Lyra is always in the background, never taking center stage, the little things she does will have an impact on us and she will also stay in our hearts forever.

ReplyDeleteTruthfully I wish there was no name for me to weigh in on: I was happier without the blindbag toy existing. 'Lyra Heartstrings' is a pretty enough name, but... I'm otherwise unfond of it and would not be sad to see the name fade into oblivion. The song expresses my feelings pretty well.
I suppose if people are having trouble hearing it I should post the lyrics.

I dunno 'bout you guys, but I actually like Heartstrings about five times more than Lyra. Lyra doesn't involve her personality any, which is part of the problem with fanon names.

ReplyDeleteWhat I mean is that although we don't know her personality, just being named Lyra is counter-intuitive in terms o the naming process. Heartstrings is vague but has more meaning, and in terms of what her parents would've called her they most likely wouldn't call her exactly what her cutie mark is before she even got it.
However, I will entertain the suggestion that Heartstrings is now IRL canon at least, and her friends all call her Lyra.

I like "Heartstrings" more than Lyra, mainly because Lyra is already a constellation. Besides. "Heartstrings" is a little more clever--"lyra" is pretty literal.
Heartstrings still isn't her name as far as I'm concerned. Unless it's put into the show itself where she's refereed to as such, it's not her name. Even then, could just be another recolor with no intention of it being the same actual pony. Though it'd be known if she were referred to as "Lyra", it'd be our Lyra obviously. So here's to sticking to the name Lyra. :)

ReplyDeleteYou raise an interesting point. Besides the dubious connection between the sweatshop that produces these toys and the animators, a sea-foam pony with a lyre cutie mark appears in so many places in the show, it would stretch to breaking all the threads of reason to suppose they were one and the same. It is more likely that our "lyra" is a common pony prototype with kin distributed widely all over equestria.
I posit that Heartstrings and Lyra are cousins.

As it is if they ever introduce Octavia anywhere I'm sure that won't be her name, though it is better than Lyra's in the sense that it's vague enough to just mean she does something with music as opposed to playing a specific instrument.

ReplyDeleteWell, like I said before. It's cheaper and easier to simply work like this. I'll put it this way. It's very unlikely that the Heartstrings pony toy was meant to be our Lyra at all. What's more likely the case is that it's a known color combination used on the show, maybe even in a list of pony color combinations, and they used it. Then they just tacked on a suiting name. It looks like Lyra. But it's not.

ReplyDeleteI didn't come up with the name myself, someone else did. I've just grown accustomed to it at this point. As for Octavia. No, the name Octavia wouldn't be used. This is obvious because of several reasons. I'm not saying the name "Lyra" isn't a bit too straight-forward for her. But in my own opinion, I've simply grown accustomed to it now and like it myself. If, for whatever reason, Lyra's color combination was referred to in the show as "Heartstrings", that would seal the deal a little more. Though you have to remember, many ponies are just recolors because it's cheaper and quicker that way. It's not considered that they're a certain fanon's pony. Derpy is a special exception and the only one right now to that rule. And even she hasn't been referred to since her initial appearance as Ditzy. I guess what I'm trying to say is, this is likely not actually -meant- to be Lyra at all. It's simply the common color combination and mark on a Twilight model. So saying she has to be called "Heartstrings" now... well, to each their own. But I prefer to stick with Lyra. Mostly just because it's what I've come to like. :)

As for Derpy, luckily she never actually appeared as the pony they were talking about, just her name was said(because I really do like the name Derpy Hooves and not Ditzy Doo). I really hope Lauren meant what she said a while ago about her name, and from the recent posts here on EqD we might finally see that come to fruition.

ReplyDeleteWell, Lauren did state she likes the name Derpy if I remember correctly. And the name Derpy is used among many of the staff at the studio as well. Whether or not the name will ever used in the show, only time will tell. There's a good chance not though, since Derpy is simply our loveable little "where's Waldo?" background pony. But who knows. :)
Anybody else find it odd the reaction to an "official" name for Lyra (if it is her - I'm skeptical a lazy Twilight Sparkle palette swap is intended to be the same character from the show) seems to actually be worse than the reaction to Canon!Luna, who had about ten times the fan base (with all apologies to Lyra fans)?

ReplyDeleteHonestly, I have to disagree with the general argument that the blind bag figure isn't meant to be Lyra at all... If *Fluttershy* herself is nothing but a lazy repaint in this figure collection, then that surely isn't grounds for dismissing such a minor character as Lyra on those grounds. The color combination and cutie mark aren't a coincidence... It's supposed to be the unnamed background pony from the show.
Now, whether this is a direct appeal to the fans from Hasbro, that's harder to figure. Surely anyone who dug into fandom would have come up with Bon Bon or Doctor Whooves or so for other background pony ideas before Blues or Berrypunch. So while I clearly think someone on the production side is clearly taking a closer loom at the show itself for toy ideas (which is a wonderful change of pace), I'm not sure how much they're intentionally chasing fandom quite yet.

But with the toys, we can argue those. We can say "But that picture/toy doesn't actually look like this background pony." Or we can say "Until they call her that in the show, she's X."
I don't know if the official names will stick, but I doubt they will. The fans have put too much into ponies with the fan names (fanfic-wise, personality-wise, etc) to just switch over.

And to weigh in one the name debacle (again), I'm running with "Heartstrings" simply being Bon-Bon's pet name for Lyra. This way it has nothing to do with her true name name, and I feel that in the popular interpretation of Bon-Bon and Lyra being a couple Bon-Bon calling Lyra "Heartstrings" makes a lot of sense; It combines Lyra's name and fanon musical talent, a string instrument, and the phrase "Tugging on my heartstrings".

Good job overall on the lyrics. The flow seems a bit unsteady at times (if you're trying to sync to the original music), but otherwise very nice.
Yeah, the wiki folks are kind of being horrible people about this. It seems to completely defeat the spirit of being a wiki to be run like an autocracy. To me, "wiki" means a dictionary that expresses the beliefs of the interested community, not an encyclopedia following a strict set of precepts. The more they insist on following the blindbag names for all purposes, the more I feel like disregarding them. So yeah, Lyra forever. :)

In fact all their names have to due with their cutie marks and their marks have to do with their personalities all of which don't show up until you're older so the real question is, are their names different as fillies than when they become mares. Will Applebloom change her name after her mark appears? Or is more likely that we are just being too analytical and should just like the names we like. I like Lyra.
