Someone over on Lauren Fausts Deviant Art page asked her about the lack of Rarity in the recent episode. Apparently there was an entire planned sequence with her that got cut. Poor girl, its a shame FiM isn't a 45 minute long show each week instead!
And the responses for the image hating people out there:
Lovemebuthateme: loved episode 4 <3, may I ask why rarity wasn't in it?
Lauren: She was in the script. Sounds like she got cut.
Kitmit: what was she suppose to do in the script? You think she would of made herself some fabulous nightmare night costume for herself.
Lauren: She was still working on her costume, and perfectionist as she is, it wasn't ready. (I forget what it was.)
There was a whole sequence where Twilight brought Luna to Rarity's for a makeover, hoping she could give Luna a "softer," less intimidating look. Rarity freaked out about getting to dress up a Princess and over did it, covering her in the pinkiest pink princess get up ever. Luna disliked it and in taking it off, had a piece of the dress in her mouth. Pinkie showed up just at that moment and screamed that Nightmare Moon ate a princess and all the kids screamed and ran.
Thanks to Kitmit for the heads up!

First! Ha!
ReplyDeleteSo that's what happened.
ReplyDelete...Poor Rarity T.T
ReplyDeletesecond just kidding I still say Rarity is far too fabulous to be seen in a cheap costume.
ReplyDeletesounds like something that would've happened.
ReplyDeleteseriously, sounds uber legit.
That explains alot, thx everyone.
ReplyDeleteRarity's absence was the first thing I thought about half way through the episode. As I watched the rest I couldn't stop thinking about it and unfortunately as much as I loved the episode it hindered my full enjoyment of it.
ReplyDeleteno one likes her anyway
ReplyDeleteWell, that's unfortunate. Her absence in a costume-themed episode was truly felt. Didn't break the episode by any means, but still.
ReplyDeleteWow awesome.
ReplyDelete...such a hollow victory.
ReplyDeleteWonder what Rarity's costume would have been?
Sounds like something that would be easily cut for time.
ReplyDeleteSloooow, Seth. I already knew this. ;)
ReplyDeleteXD BAhahahaha Oh that would have been funny.
ReplyDeleteBet time constraints killed it. The episode cut it to the wire and was pretty packed through most of it. For it, you have to think what they would have to 'cut'.
ReplyDeleteOh well, her voice actor still had plenty of roles!
Okay... that would have been a funny scene. But Rarity's my least favorite of the mane 6 so I don't mind so much.
ReplyDeleteThere's actually a really simple reason Rarity wasn't in this episode: She was just too pooped! Everyone (with the exception of Mayor Mare and Derpy, who was dressed as a paper bag) had an awesome costume...someone had to make them! I shudder to think about how many late nights Rarity had to pull in the rampup to Nightmare Night...
ReplyDeleteYeah, too bad they didn't have time to put it in, would of fit and added to the whole episode.
ReplyDeleteRarity is my favorite but I don't mind. We're going to have a lot of Rarity next week anyway.
ReplyDelete@jeremiah Just because she isn't considered best pony by the majority doesn't mean she's lacking fans. She may not be the most down to equestria pony at times but she is the element of generosity and she does provide some good comedy at times.
ReplyDeleteBut, back to the post... after watching the episode, I went back and paused the video during shots of groups of ponies to see if she was put in as a "where's waldo" sort of thing. I thought she could be the mummy pony but the eyes didn't match. I also found lots of multiple ponies. Such as when Twilight and AJ look back at the crowd forming in front of the Mayor. There are two of everypony...except for Sweetie Belle.
That makes me think of the picture of rarity and Nightmare moon all dressed up, think it was done by Madmax.
ReplyDeleteSomething along the lines of "Midnight Blue isn't your colour"
"I don't like her" doesn't mean "No one likes her". Seriously, are you two years old? You do realize the world doesn't disappear when you close your eyes.
ReplyDeleteThat's kinda sad actually. This was an episode that actually wouldn't have minded Rarity being in...
ReplyDeletei can see why they'd cut that. the bulk of the episode is that Luna scared everyone, so i can see why they'd cut out the one pony other than Twilight who wasn't scared of her.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is I didn't even notice until I read this news post.
ReplyDeleteThey need to make a new Nightmare Night episode for 2012. In this second ep, I'd like to see.
ReplyDelete- Princess Luna now fully in the spirit of the celebration, doing shows to give the ponies a scary fun time. Kind of like Jack Skellington.
- Rarity finally have her time in the spotlight, debuting that costume she had spent so much time on.
- Fluttershy's friends, including Luna, helping her learn to have fun on Nightmare Night. Seriously, I felt bad for her that she's locked up in her own house while everyone else is having a great time.
I can't help but think that at least one of the reasons they cut her out was because they thought the voices would sound too similar, so a conversation between the two of them would sound awkward. Idk, I just can't see any other reason why they would cut her out?
ReplyDeleteTBH the only time I realized Rarity was absent was when she was replaced by carrot top in the apple bobbing scene. But the next ep is a Rarity episode, so its not too bad--Wait, what? Two weeks until a new episode?! AAAAAHHH WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE AAAIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE
ReplyDeleteFor anyone curious. Rarity and that scene were cut out because of time restraints.
ReplyDeleteWe need a DVD with deleted scenes added! ALL OF MY MONEY
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust is good enough at making stuff up out of nowhere that she could probably be a successful politician.
ReplyDeleteMan, now I'm even more annoyed that Rarity wasn't in it. That would've been a great scene. You'd think they could have found somewhere to pop her in the background.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure somepony would dislike me saying that, but I'm glad they cut Rarity part out. That episode seem too fast, if they left Rarity part in, then it'll be too fast.
ReplyDeleteSo for canon sake we can just say Rarity was to busy working on her costume to actually attend celebrations. My personal Theory was that to many ponies asked her to make costumes and she was to tired to attend.
ReplyDeleteAww, I would've liked to see that.
ReplyDeleteDVD extra?
ReplyDeleteAw man, I would have loved to see that!
ReplyDeleteWell...that's that.
ReplyDelete@Display Name
ReplyDeleteShe would have been around for when the script was being made, she's not making this up.
The voice actress was already having a field day, because is memory serves me right if you voice two different characters then you get paid for those two characters, so if rarity has no spoken lines then the voice actress isn't payed for Rarities voice.
ReplyDeleteI don't need to worry. Rarity is no longer the best pony after this episode. Zecora is now the best pony. Her character on Nightmare Night was amazing as a scary story teller.
ReplyDeleteA little more behind Rarity's absence.
ReplyDeleteA
B
Look at it this way, there's still hope to see the cuts when it all goes to DVD...probably.
ReplyDeleteThen again maybe they cut it because there was too much 'Pink' exposure as it is. *Gasp! The audacity of it all!
Guess Rarity was completely burnt out making lots of Nightmare Night costumes and needed to sleep it off.
ReplyDelete@Michael C I agree with you
ReplyDelete@Meep
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately...
Nayuki: Since these sorts of cuts happen during the storyboarding process, it's unlikely... if you're lucky maybe in an animatic form. I'm hoping Hasbro decides to do some cool bonus features when they get around to DVDs.
This wouldn't be quite as egregious an absence if we didn't ahve to wait 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you shoulda seen it. Almost all the ponies went to Rarity, and even though she had costumes ("Fabulous" costumes, in her terms) a month ahead of time there were still lots of ponies who needed other adjustments or somethig else done. Of course, yours truly made her OWN fricken sweet costume..... ;3
ReplyDeleteI feel that this is a complete non-issue. It's kind of strange how after much anticipation/requests for the return of Luna that people are complaining that Rarity didn't make an appearance. It was all about Luna and it was fantastic — despite the fact that I like Rarity I did not notice her absence.
ReplyDeleteSomething to be added to the deleted scene menu when the "Blu-ray" set releases.
ReplyDelete*hint, hint*
Hm... sounds like time constraints forced them to do some cuts... Honestly I don't know what they could've cut that would've saved time for an entire makeover scene. Ah well. Good episode nevertheless.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh darn it. Rarity is my favorite pony.
ReplyDelete@Blayze Kohime
ReplyDelete"We need a DVD with deleted scenes added! ALL OF MY MONEY"
^This. I think that scene could have made it in if Hasbro/The Hub didn't shove a buttload of commercials into the show.
Aww this would have been really cute and funny :( Well, it's good to know that Rarity had at least been in the script. And jeez Pinkie, way to rile up the masses...
ReplyDelete@Sanakan
ReplyDeleteComplete non issue!
On a holiday that is all about fashion they dont have the best fashionista showing off her magnificent costume. I understand why they cut the scene but just five to ten seconds of her on screen even in the background would of been acceptable.
@megantron
ReplyDeleteSomepony would've found out eventually, anyway, so why not?
Haha, oh man, that sounds awesome. I really hope that's on the DVD or something.
ReplyDeleteWell! That explains that!
ReplyDeleteC'mon animators, it's common sense: If ya'll've got too much plot to fit in 22 minutes, MAKE IT TWO EPISODES.
ReplyDeleteyou know that was a great absence of Rainbow Dash as well, ya she was pranking all the pony's with her thundercloud but she was only in the episode for a combined time of about a minute
ReplyDeleteAs sad as I was that Rarity was missing from this amazing episode I'm comforted by knowing next episode is going to be mainly focused on her.
ReplyDeleteThey run the episode twice in a row, maybe one week they can do a double length and only play it once.
ReplyDelete@jeremiah
ReplyDeleteDon't be speaking for me motherfucker. I happen to like Rarity.
Seen this on TvTropes and I can't say that I really mind given that Luna and Rarity has the same voice actor.
ReplyDeleteNext episode is Rarity/Sweetie belle centric anyway (if still two weeks away).
Ruined the episode for me sadly.
ReplyDeleteRarity wasn't in the episode due to time restraints and because they needed to cut something. If they had cut something else, then the episode would have mostly consisted of Rarity's voice actor talking with herself. Don't forget that she also voices the Mayor and Zecora too. So with Rarity, that would have made four characters and most of the scenes.
ReplyDeletetldr; version: Tabitha St. Germain is way too awesome.
It wouldn't have added much to the episode anyway. Fanboyism doesn't count.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it'll turn up as a DVD/Blu-Ray extra. /unlikely
@dublio
ReplyDeleteFall Weather Friends is mostly AJ and RBD's voice actor talking to herself.
Hmm...do you think that scene was ever animated? If so, do you guys think there's something, ANYTHING we can do that would convince their studios to post that scene somewhere on the intertubes? 'cause that sounds like a fun scene!
ReplyDelete@Ford
ReplyDeleteSadly, I doubt it made it past story boarding.
Fashion pony cut from fashion holiday. Bleh.
@dublio
ReplyDeleteTabitha does not voice the Mareor.
Only Rarity, Night Mare, Luna, Granny Smith, Zecora, Photo Finish, Bonbon in Lesson Zero...
As a side note, Rarity confirmed for Cutie Pox. As well as Fluttershy, Applejack, Dashie, Twilight and me.
Both are same voice actress, I guess it's probably why? I dont think so
ReplyDelete@Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteThat's right. Spike's VA does the Mayor.
@Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteWhoops. My bad. xD
Wow. Sisterhooves Social looks like it'll just be Rarity and Sweetie Belle.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if all these cut scenes will be included on the DVD release
ReplyDeleteThis scene MUST be finished and restored for a special extended version of the episode on the Season 2 Blu-Ray release! (God willing we get full season Blu-Ray releases of this show!)
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust made a.. a... A TYPO!! And then made a follow up post TO CORRECT IT! See!?? She IS human, just like us!
ReplyDelete@instantrainbow
ReplyDeleteDon't trust IMDB about anything that has yet to see release. Anybody can edit it, and there's no way to verify the information. It's like Wikipedia, if Wiki really were as unreliable as college professors claim it is. Example: It listed David Tennant (the long-departed previous Doctor) as appearing in the current season finale of "Doctor Who," for goodness sake.
Maybe we can see it one day as a DVD extra.
ReplyDeleteHint hint, Hasbro.
Riiight ? They cut Rarity here, but not the ''Twilight being very creepy with the CMC'' ?
ReplyDeleteOh well...
I wodner if they could have cut something (not a Main cast scene, of course) else to create some place for her in the episode ?
I know how to prevent this from ever happening again!
ReplyDeleteMake the episodes an hour long!!!
Who's with me? n_n
@SgtGarandI agree ... I love Rarity! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still upset by her absence, but at least now I have closure. Plus this would absolutely be in her character, so I can live with the story alone.
ReplyDelete@Blayze KohimeI know, right? Like a "Pony Platinum Season 2 DVD edition" or something.
ReplyDeleteBummer. On the bright side, she's getting her own episode soon!!!
ReplyDeleteDamn you time constraints! DAMN YOU!
ReplyDeleteDamn you time constraints! DAMN YOU!
ReplyDelete@StarStep
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a complete non-issue.
Everyone (I think) wanted a Luna-centric episode and we got exactly that; despite the Halloween theme the costumes imo were not the focal point (despite the fact they were awesome). Even if they put Rarity in there as just a visual cameo what difference would there be from he not being there? Either she's there and has a few lines or she's not there and it makes no difference.
Besides, she's getting an episode that focuses on her/her sister next time. People complaining about this have no real reason to complain and imo are just being completely unreasonable and hard to please regardless of how much the creators/animators/etc. give the fans what they want.
I never comment on EqD and I've been following for a while, but I found all this outrage disappointing and embarrassing enough that I had to say something. Would I have liked to have seen Rarity and her take on fashion, creating costumes etc. in this episode? Definitely. Is it a episode killer because she wasn't? The suggestion is laughable.
I didn't want a Luna episode. Course, I did not not want one either.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first episode that I've complained about.
I wouldn't have given a damn if there wasn't a leaked storyboard that made me expect Rarity. And if it wasn't a perfect episode for Rarity to be in.
So, using your logic, since Rarity has an episode about her, she can be cut from all other episodes and we can't complain? Great logic.
@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteShe was cut from one episode. It's not as though she's been in every single episode and hasn't been cut out twice.
@instantrainbow
ReplyDeleteHow many times before this has she appeared on a leaked storyboard and then not appeared in the same episode?
This is the first. If they never leaked that story board I would not care.
@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteHey, they leaked that she's in Cutie Pox. Now wait for half the mane six, including her, not to show-up.
Well that sucks, guess one more extra to add to the DVD when it comes out.
ReplyDelete@BagOfChipsFirst off, your post comes off as if you felt I was attacking you specifically. I wasn't. I don't care whether you've complained about every episode or have never done so until now.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to the storyboard issue personally I didn't even know about it. It seems I'm not a hardcore fan as I couldn't care less about something like that (that goes for most series' I follow). As a result I didn't even notice her absence after watching it so I think I'm coming from a different angle than you are.
However if they didn't leak it then yes you or anyone else may not have been upset; that doesn't make the complaints any less trivial. Those were your expectations and do not necessarily correspond to what the reality will be. Storyboards as far as I can tell are not the finalized/absolute version of the contents/progression of an episode — they're subject to change, so despite the fact that she was shown there and didn't end up in the final cut isn't something one can get justifiably upset about imo.
A storyboard's purpose I think is to get a rough idea of where the tale is going/can go and to work out issues and whatnot amongst the team. This admittedly is based on no prior research or experience on my part so I could be completely wrong.
As for you're criticisms of "my logic", are you really going to play that game man? That's not what I was saying and you know it. No offense sir but on this particular point I think you're being silly.
@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteThat's some faulty logic there, chief. Getting a -wee- bit riled up over nothing, aren't you?
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I guess I can see why it got cut; Rarity breaks from character a little by not doing the makeover well, and I feel like TS wouldn't have that idea at first. And the punch line could have just been 'somepony' instead of a 'princess'.
ReplyDeleteIt was already my headcanon that Rarity wasn't there because she was going all OCD over her own costume. Hooray for good guesses!
I'm not quite sure, but might this be the first episode she is not in at all?
ReplyDeletePink costume?
ReplyDeletePinkie thinks it's the coat of a princess?
She planned a Pinktrollestia reference! Oo
Rarity BETTER be in the next episode then.
ReplyDeleteI guess that makes sense though.
Inb4 somepony writes a fanfic about Rarity's adventures during this episode, explaining her absence.
ReplyDelete@Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for that.
Rarity: "What's the matter? I've made you more approachable."
Luna (annoyed): "You made me pink."
Is a great exchange, really hope this surfaces in the coming weeks to tide us over the mini pony drought.
Hmmm. The toy of Celestia is pink...
ReplyDeleteIT MUST NOT BE CELESTIA. IT'S LUNA IN ALL HER PINK MAKEUP. JUST WITH THE WRONG NAME ON THE BOX!
...Who am I kidding. Hasbro is disappoint.
So... People were hoping for a Luna episode. People get Luna episode. People watch it to look for Rarity? *shrugs*
ReplyDelete"Neigh! We hath NOT eaten any princesses! We hath not eaten any pony nor anything all day! Thy lips speak lies and fallacies!
ReplyDeleteWe doth need a drink..."
The real problem here is that episodes need to be exactly 22 minutes long. This means that sometimes they have to cut something, and sometimes they have to add padding (don't tell me there was no padding in Applebuck Season, the whole story could have been wrapped up in half the time without AJ helping everypony while overworking herself in her orchard). They do a good job both at cutting and padding, but the show would still improve if time constraints were relaxed like this:
ReplyDelete* FiM comes in chunks 20-25 minutes long.
* A long story is split in two chunks.
* Two or three short stories can be combined in one chunk.
* There can be occasional 'Epic' stories more than an hour long, and released as movies. Something like "The end of Flutter Valley" (yes, FiM made me watch earlier editions of MLP).
This would pretty much guarantee that stories can be exactly as long as they need to be, but the problem with this approach is that they would need to adjust the amount of commercials at the last moment.
That would be a great addition!
ReplyDeleteOMG I didn't even notice Rarity was missing! Shame really. Also, it'd be awesome if they showed us that deleted scene (if they'd already worked on it, otherwise, I wouldn't want them to go through all of the trouble.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised everyone is making such a big deal out of a missing rarity. I like rarity as much as the next pony, but some of the best episodes don't have everypony in them.
ReplyDeleteyou don't need everypony to tell a particular story, and if you try and cram them in, it ends up being one of those shows where you -have- to show every character whether they have a part or not, and it does become a toy commercial. don't worry! rarity will be around for the next episode as the story's focus!
@Mike
ReplyDeleteRarity doesn't have OCD.
@BagOfChips
ReplyDeleteAccording to Lauren, she does.
OCD manifests in more ways than one.
@Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeleteI think you sent me the wrong link because Faust isn't talking about OCD in that post.
The rarity scene would have been best seen because Rarity is best pony.
ReplyDeleteI demand DVD Bonus feature scene.
Actually I just demand DVD in general
I laughed hard at what was Rarity's intended scene. Would have been beautiful to see but ah, so little to be done in 30 mins.
ReplyDeleteI certainly did miss Rarity in this episode, but it wasn't just because she wasn't there. It's that the Rarity fans missed out on seeing her interaction with Princess Luna. Luna is not a common, every episode character and most of the community has been anticipating her appearance for a long time.
ReplyDeleteEach of the Mane 6 are very different, and we knew they would all act differently:
-Twilight immediately saw Luna's problem and wanted to help.
-Pinkie Pie essentially played with Luna the whole episode, using her as a device to scare the little ones.
-Applejack was scared of her at first, but quickly came around when Luna's down-to-earth problem was brought to her attention
-Fluttershy still sees her as Nightmare Moon as was terrified of her to the point of near mental collapse.
-Rainbow Dash avoided Luna until she saw her with two of her friends (Twilight and Pinkie in the alley) but still didn't directly confront her.
-Rarity; well, no appearance, no interaction.
(Thankfully, Lauren and some others from Studio B stepped up and filled in the gaps. So we now know that Rarity was, in fact, excited to work with the Princess, and actually went a little overboard; ala fangirl style.)
It's not that Rarity fans are upset at a random absence of their favorite character. It's that we all know how rare Luna's presence will be throughout the season, and we missed a fabulous opportunity to see our favorite character shine.
The real enemy here is time constraints, not fellow bronies who may or may-not like Rarity. And this episode probably should have been made into a two-parter; giving more time for each character to work with Luna a bit (Rainbow Dash could have used a tad more screen time too). But at least we did get a good episode with a few things that the fandom hoped for; a socially awkward Luna, a scene with Ditzy-Doo and Carrot Top hanging out together, and the return (and town acceptance) of Zecora.
Oh my goodness... that post didn't look that long in notepad...
ReplyDeleteSorry about the wall of text there.
I never noticed actually, and I know I will probably get hated for saying this but I really don't care cuz rarity is y least fave pony, but more importantly I don't think that all the main cast has to be in EVERY single episode anyway.
ReplyDelete
