That image in the second video is creepy. I keep hearing this "Rainbow Factory" thing pop up. If I assume correctly, it's a fic along the lines of Cupcakes and Rocket to Insanity. :o
Yea, someone made a fanfic based on the song. It has something to do with a crazy RD. I noticed the song by WoodenToaster after listening to his song with CarrotTop, but I wasn't sure which came first. (The Rainbow Factory song came before the fic)
Oh man, got them shivers with the first lyrics in the Rainbow Factory Remix. I love that song so much, it's just epic. The lyrics and rhymes in it are just intense and have a beat I really just can't resist. By the way, if you haven't read the fic that was made for the song, well, it competes and, to me, beats Cupcakes. No, it's not poorly written, I actually think it may be one of my favorites, the emotions that it can make the reader experience are pretty extreme(such as despair, hate, or sadness) .
#1 Fluttershy, what are you doing he.....oh, my #2 ....creepy #3 Very cute image of the CMC. Song is nice as well. Very calm and dream-like, so I guess it works pretty well.
Didn't know that. I was thinking of utilizing the concept of a rainbow factory into a fic of mine, but definitely not anything gory or involving insanity.
Oh gosh. I had to put that second image into paint and invert(or revert as the case may be) the colors just to see what it looked like... why did I do it?! It's creepy as is, but normally, ACK.
Generally, you won't be that well known unless you are capable of creating fanart, pony music, PMVs, or writing excellent fanfiction. Jelfes manages to create his own legacy by making comments on everything, and it's more than him just saying "First" since he gives feedback too.
It's such a shame that most think I post just for the sake of posting before others though. I have always intended to make a fan fic, I'm known for creating deep mental images with my writing, I just can't find the right premise/plot for the story that I want to write.
Nah, it just shows that you really love MLP and this website when you make comments on everything. That's a good thing.
As for writing fanfics, yeah it can be hard sometimes to put the words from inside your head onto paper (or computer).
As for me, I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head and the best I can do is brain vomit by writing as much as I can into a Wordpad. Now I just need to organize it into cohesive information and maybe I can razzle dazzle someone.
But since it'll be my first fanfic, I'm going to assume that it will be crap until I can improve and become a better writer. But hey, we all need to start somewhere right?
@wackyteen Yes, there's a fanfic in which we learn that (spoiler warning) every pegasus who flunks out of Cloudsdale flight school gets sent to the Rainbow Factory where they are ground into rainbow ingredients while they're still alive. So basically it's Cloudsdale as a death camp, with Rainbow Dash as the commander. She even kills Scootaloo!
Yeah, I read the fic, and man, it was really intense. I can laugh off "Cupcakes" because
1 it was so out of character it wasn't even near plausible and damn near laughable and 2 it was just blood+gore, most of it
Rainbow Factory had no significant amounts of blood/gore, it was... just... an experience. It was justified so well, and so well written, that I had a mini-crisis concerning whether Rainbow was still best pony. Looking back, I really can't describe it, I suppose the closest I could get is think of "the Cough" now its totally worse.
@Anyone who wonders why I read such grim-dark fics
I appreciate fics more for their imagery than the actual story, which is just like the frosting being removed from the cake(that's a good thing, for me at least). The mental imagery that books provide is what I find to be the best part of any story because of the flexibility it provides, letting the reader form the scene, because of that I am more willing and actually eager to read fics that are grim-dark as they tend to have the most vivid imagery. The above describes why I like to write stories with strong imagery; I figure, if I can create that image for the reader, why not?
@Ardashir I think you revealed a bit too much of the story. I, personally, can't help but look at spoilers, even when I don't want to. That being said, you did give a warning, I just wonder how many others have the same inability to resist spoilers as I.
That Rainbow Factory remix...haunting. In my opinnion it's prefect for a Halloween rave or something like that. It just took my breath away (and the end...oh, that ending...)
#1 Oh, why hai thar, Fluttershy. How are you doing on this lovely day? :>
#2 The beginning of this song reminded me of the song Omen by The Prodigy. I was half-expecting it to suddenly go "It's an omen!". lol Lots of talk about the songs and fanfic. I still haven't read the fanfic, but I hear things about it. The song was good anyway. lol This remix wasn't too shabby itself.
I didn't like the fic for Rainbow Factory. It just didn't seem to work. Fluttershy would have been long dead in that fic's universe, but as far as the reader can tell, she's alive - since the fic plays off canon up until the very the beginning of the fic.
There were other things that didn't work for me, but I cannot recall them.
That said, the original song, and the remixes that I keep finding for it, are awesome.
#1 This is pretty good. I can safely say I haven't heard many pony-inspired songs like this. It doesn't seem to be very Fluttershy-ish to me, but it also isn't particularly un-Fluttershy-ish, so cool. Also, I have to say it: So, this must be the infamous "Stare" I've heard so much about.
#2 Not a bad remix.
#3 This is actually my favorite song today. Good peaceful melody.
Alright, that (quite awesome and creepy) #2 finally persuaded me to read the story. Not bad, some inconsistencies with canon and characters, as pointed out, but still a decent story. Having read both, it was better than Cupcakes. For those who will inevitably ask, I read grimdark just because it's interesting to see what some think life for our little ponies would be like if they weren't so innocent. It doesn't ruin the innocence of the show, for me.
ANYWAYS, all the songs were excellent, always love to hear what people come up with beyond remixes of songs from the show (though those are nice, too).
I've heard all three and honestly like each of them, as for the Rainbow Factory fic, someone get it on EQD or contact the author and have it posted here! (I already know of it, for those who may ask.)
My problem with the Rainbow Factory fic was I couldn't see it being within Rainbow Dash's character to front such a- what would you call it? Plot? Organization? In any case, it's clear she is VERY good friends with Fluttershy. And Fluttershy would never have graduated her test if she took it. I don't see how Rainbow Dash could be friends with Fluttershy and then decide that Scootaloo must die because she failed her test.
Moreover, I can't picture RD calling Scootaloo a -ahem- word connotating the negative view of a promiscuous female unless (although really even if) Scoot was acting in such a fashion no matter how crazy RD had become. I don't know why I was so fixated on that part, but it seemed inappropriate for that scene. I suppose I could picture her saying such a thing about Rarity (if she was insane), but Scoot? No. A different word choice would have been better. Using that word jarred me right out of the fic.
I dunno, it's weird, I saw Cupcakes as being more possible because Pinkie seemed more in character. We've seen her creepy/crazy side in Party of One, and I could tell it was Pinkie Pie talking in the fic. Just that perky, cheerful way she spoke the entire fic...
In Rainbow Factory, I didn't hear Rainbow Dash talking. Just a faceless villain.
Also, I would have liked a more in depth explanation of the rainbow device as this was the centerpiece of the fic.
Gah, did a lot of talking, and I normally just lurk here, but I've really wanted to discuss this fic for some time and I haven't found a place I could review it.
Rainbow Factory (the fic) may have several inconsistencies character and canon-wise, such as Fluttershy's fate and RD becoming a faceless villain, as pointed out by lml above, but it does a damn better job at setting the theme than Cupcakes do, even though Pinkie Pie is a much more recognizable character than RD ever will be (look at the banner we have now, for example).
Loved the tunes, especially the creepy bell on #2 which totally sells the grimdark setting to me.
Just to add my two bits to the Cupcakes/Rainbow Factory discussion, it seems that whilst Pinkie is extremely believable throughout Cupcakes (dialogue etc.)the entire fic seems to run to the theme of "and then Dash was hurt more and screamed louder", whilst in Rainbow factory a lot more of emotion seems to be evoked especially as it follows the thoughts of Scootaloo. *Takes breath in*
@lml018 Fluttershy never took the test. Scootaloo failed the test, even though rainbow Dash trained her so she doesn't. Dash became insane by the constant killing, so when Scootaloo failed the test, she snapped completely. Also, I think you take the test to be permitted to do a weather job, but Fluttershy got to the ground and stayed there. I don't think somepony is forcing you to take the test, it is more peer pressure (because of the discrimination in Cloudsdale) and because ponies want to have a weather job and the good reputation of being a Cloudsdale Pegasus.
I agree, that word came out of nowhere.
And I agree to Pinkie being in Character in Cupcakes, although Cupcakes was written *before* PoO, so nopony will believe that PoO is a good argument for it. But she was as much in character as a character can be in such an odd situation.
To the faceless villain part: But I think that is the point, Scootaloo mentions it a few times throughout the fic: There was nothing left of Dash. The last paragraph explicitly states, that the eyes are the last thing that reminded her of Dash. The behaving out-of-Character was a factor. She was not Dash anymore, she was a faceless villain. The years working in the rainbow factory killed her from the inside, it is not "the rainbow factory, were not a single soul gets through" for nothing. Not only the victims die, the executors die, too, only inside.

Rainbow Factory remixes are hit or miss. Thankfully, Silva Hound knows what they're doing.
ReplyDeleteThe bell from Omen is a nice touch, too.
Bravo.

More along the lines of corrupt administration.
These were pretty awesome, but I have a question for Jelfes, do you comment on everything?
ReplyDelete"...for those that are into that sort of thing." I've seen your comment on the Trixie video, Seth! You're not fooling me!

ReplyDeletewell, hello there Fluttershy.
@Gadget Voice be heard. Yes, generally I do, I will usually give constructive feedback on what was good and bad about something.
ReplyDelete#1 was a bit repetitive, but the beat was kinda cool
Enough has already been said by me about #2
#3 was nice, the piano and other instruments that were used were fitting for the song, soothing, good beat, and happy in general.
Rainbow Factory is going on my Halloween playlist!!

Is it just for scarring bronies and creating dreadful mental images that last an eternity or it's actually worth the read?

ReplyDelete@Chickenman
ReplyDeleteYou do realize RD doesn't have wings on purpose. For a reason. I'll leave the rest to you.
Rainbow Factory had the best ending line ever. It gave me shivers just thinking about future implications. It was a bit too cliché in all that hidden villian stuff, and how nopony knows about what happens, but it was a great read and had a few decent OC`s.
ReplyDeleteAnd that ending. DAMN.
1&3. Very smooth.
