• Music: Applejack Edition

    News is a little slow today, so, here's something different.

    <soapbox>

    It seems to be the opinion of many people that I hate Applejack- that I hate everything, actually. Call me sensitive, but this isn't the kind of pony I want to come across as. Sometimes, when you're trying to be entertaining, you say things a little too often or a little too loudly.

    So, to make up for that, I'm going to say nice things about Applejack:

    You don't have to be the flashiest or the most talented or the most high-profile pony to be a good friend. Sometimes, all it takes is a determination of spirit, a stubborn sense of pure honesty, and a solid work ethic to make you stand out. Dependability and reliability are equal measures of a pony to generosity and kindness. One should never discount the often thankless job of being the moral backbone of a group of friends.

      After thinking on this topic earlier today, I actually came to a similair conclusion. As such, Applejack has moved up from 6th to 5th equal with RD, Right behind Rarity and Twilight tied at third and Pinkie and Fluttershy tied for first.

      Anyway, music. Loved #1, #3 is also fantastic and I need to hear more from these guys clearly.

      Theres no need to love Applejack, just dont blame her and tell that she's boring, cause for the ones who love her it sounds like some ostracize. and thats not so fair in this awesome and liberal Brony community. After all Applejack is the best for me and without her the show cant be the same :P

      I just want to say that I never felt that you actually 'hated' AJ, just that you only felt that there wasn't anything for you to latch onto for being madly, gushing out loud and repeatedly in love with our farmer pony.

      Which I agree with. And let's face it, with the internet being what it is, and the 24 hour news cycle, and twitter, and cell phones, etc etc etc, if you haven't done something big/loud/crazy enough to keep people's attention for more than 15 minutes, you're going to be forgotten when the next event rolls along. AJ simply hasn't had her Sonic Rainboom/ Stare down a cockatrice/ This is whining!/ Party with inanimate objects/ Put an Ursa Minor to sleep moment yet.

      So I don't hold it against anypony for not out and out loving her. If anything, I like her the most for the reasons you state above; she's the backbone of the group, the one who helps keep them together. I don't think it was accidental that Discord corrupted her first, or that Twilight brought her back first either.

      P.S. Great music choices; I must have missed #2 previously, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

      Love #1, omg! The use of her 'just fine' sample especially made me like it.

      #2 is good music and I like it a lot. However, without seeing the title or image in the video I wouldn't recognize it as Pony related.

      #3 makes for a good fighting theme.

      In all seriousness though, AJ's pretty awesome in my opinion, ranking up there with Rarity and RD (just my opinion, again.)

      One of the few characters in an animated series whose (U.S.) southern accent doesn't get grating.

      I find that to be arguable, actually. Redirecting the stampede took up about the same length of time as Fluttershy's stare-down, her rope-work in reclaiming Rainbow Dash was valuable, and she gave the most valuable advice she could to Twilight when she was going insane even though she ignored it ("Have a seat and stop sweatin' the small stuff"); she acts as a moral compass for Apple Bloom when she's feeling dejected like an older sister should, led the charge to get the Diamond Dog goons off their backs when they were semi-captured, and, perhaps one of the most commendable acts, she saved Twilight's life in the rockslide.

      She's the sense-smarts and firm ground to Twilight's booksmarts and Rainbow Dash's impatience and tendency to fly off the handle, the subtlety to Pinkie Pie's exaggerated flightiness, the confidence to Fluttershy's lack thereof, and the down-home elements to Rarity's more high-end quality of life.

      It's not the quantity of the things she's done, the length of time, or even the initial face value -- it's the fact that she can do these kinds of things when she's needed and then retreat out of the limelight to give the leadership position to someone else. She has an amount of mildness which I find commendable; she might not be as "in your face" as the other characters, but I find writing off what she's done as a character for that reason alone to be somewhat shallow.

      And that's my spiel on that.

      Looooove Applejack. The reason why she doesn't get as much love? Cus she's not obnoxious like the others (j/k, I love those crazy fillies too but they get TIRING). She actually is quite talented, or at the very least, highly capable --look at all the fangirls in the crowd when she gets that trophy in Applebuck season. She's confident, gregarious and gets shit done without calling attention to herself. And if you think about it, she really might make the best friend material out of all of them (look at her saintlike patience with Fluttershy in Dragonshy, for example) and whenever she fights with her friends, she's always the first to apologize. I think it's funny when people write her off as being boring or not a developed character --so having a well-balanced personality equals lack of depth? Uh okay.

      But tbh I mostly see the snide comments from Sethisto so you're good, cereal lol

      Although Applejack is not always appreciated, we have to consider the fact that without her, we would be missing something valuable. After all, she's pretty handy as a friend, always has your back, and is a staple in any adventure story. Just because many people don't consider Applejack to be the best pony doesn't mean that they don't love her.

      Heck, all of the Mane six are special in their own unique ways. Which makes picking a favorite rather hard. Every episode, each one pulls off something majorly badass, making everyone love them all the more. No worries AJ, your time is coming. :D

      She's the big sis of the group, without being overbearing or obnoxious. The prize pony award is the only time she's really been acknowledged by anyone for what she does, and she helps out everyone all the friggin' time.

      Heck that about sums up my position. She's an essential component of the Mane Six and in some ways more interesting because her character is a bit more subtle than the rest. Heck it's why she was my favourite early on and still my second favourite. (Dash took the number one spot, but I think I have a thing for noticeably flawed characters.)

      Applejack is not best pony but she is by far the most underappreciated. While she's usually the least funny of the group, she has a few great moments, and her common sense makes her a good foil for the more eccentric characters ("can you do that? can you explode twice?" "ಠ_ಠ ...Of course not"). She may be overall least fan favorite because most nerds can't relate to "rednecks", honestly.
