• Fallout: Equestria Animation

Those crazy Russian bronies have created a short animation thing for Fallout Equestria.  Sadly, there isn't a translation yet, but I'm sure all 15,000 of you that visit the FoE post every time it updates will find something to enjoy.

Check it out after the break!

    1. Well, at least it's Russian, the coolest language to speak, though I don't speak it...

      VastaKustuta
    2. @Jelfes

Sorry sir, but I'm afraid that honor has to go to German.

      But Russian is cool too.

      VastaKustuta
    3. I didn't understand a word of it other than maybe, "holocausta," and I'm still yet to even start reading FoE, but this was still a cool video. (I envy the Russians and how awesome their language sounds, if you couldn't tell)

      VastaKustuta
    4. Ooh, very nice, the voiceover sounds awesome, even though it's moon language to me.

      VastaKustuta
    5. @JeremyRush
Russian is DEFINITELY the best language for this video though.
"Why play post-apocalyptic RPG's when you can just live in eastern europe?"

This is epic, i really want subtitles (but not a dub unless, it's in a russian accent.)

      VastaKustuta
    6. Well, it's sort of a tie between Russian and German for me, when I want to sound pissed it would be German, and when I want to sound like I'm going to casually murder someone it would be Russian. Then there's this stupid language that I'd use for everything else.

      VastaKustuta
    7. Haha! This is really.. cute?

      English translation plz? :<

      VastaKustuta
    8. This only raises question on why this hasn't been done before. A Flash-style trailer for the "Game" could be fantastic.

      VastaKustuta
    9. Gives it a darker tone in Russian.

      VastaKustuta
    10. Somepony here will be able to translate it, I'm sure.
Looks like it has to do with a nuclear bomb, though.

      VastaKustuta
    11. OMGGGGGG that was amazing!
And now, FOE has a intro trailer too... the fanart advance continues.

      VastaKustuta
    12. I'm a russian and I'll try to translate it for you bronies ;p

      VastaKustuta
    13. @Merc312

Judging by my ear, it's The Introduction for FO:E in Russian. So that'd be sufficient enough?

      VastaKustuta
    14. Are you kidding guys? If you want a translation, just go read Fallout Equestria's prologue XD

      VastaKustuta
    15. I'd watch it if jewtube would fucking load it.

      VastaKustuta
    16. I gotta side with Russian being the cooler language... but I might be biased from being a child of the cold war.

      VastaKustuta
    17. @Razputin the Ponynaut

Who would ever want to make a Flash-style trailer for The Game to remind themselves and others of ..

      ..The Game?

      VastaKustuta
    18. I thought nopony remembers Fallout 1.

And these guys do. It's amazing. They even made a reference to the outro of the game! Which, I can assure you, was brilliant.

      VastaKustuta
    19. @Jelfes my barber is Russian and has a thick Russian accent. Don't give him any ideas

      VastaKustuta
    20. Awesome!
I actually realized it was Fo:E's prologue before I read the comments here :3
I found myself mouthing the english words alongside the russian ones (which I don't understand). xD

Someone needs to translate this, just due to it's sheer epicness. =D

      VastaKustuta
    21. Looking over Fallout Equestria, it seems to be the short Introduction (not the Prologue) being featured in the animation above.

      VastaKustuta
    22. I'm Russian. Originally, I was going to try to translate the text into English, but after a bit of research, I realized that the voiceover was actually the (mostly accurate) translation of the introduction Fallout:Equastria.

So here's what the narrator says:

nce upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria...

…there came an era when the ideals of friendship gave way to greed, selfishness, paranoia and a jealous reaping of dwindling space and natural resources. Lands took up arms against their neighbors. The end of the world occurred much as we had predicted -- the world was plunged into an abyss of balefire and dark magic. The details are trivial and pointless. The reasons, as always, purely our own. The world was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing; a magical spark struck by pony hooves quickly raged out of control. Megaspells rained from the skies. Entire lands were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Ponykind was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the ambient radiation that blanketed the lands. A quiet darkness fell across the world...

…But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue for another bloody chapter in pony history. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters known as Stables. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them. All except those in Stable Two. For on that fateful day when spellfire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Stable Two swung closed, and never re-opened.

    24. @Bombedrumbum Don't worry, you wont know it's happening, emphasis on the, "casually." Thick Russian accents are awesome, the drawl of a Russian accent that sort of melds words together is just like candy, for my ears!

      VastaKustuta
    25. @JeremyRush I had to learn German and let me tell you it is the worst language EVER!

      VastaKustuta
    26. Eh... I think it's a bit of a stretch calling this 'animation'. Not to put a dampner on their work, it's pretty good, but it's not really an animation.

      Also, Russian is better.

But I'm biased by being Russian.

      VastaKustuta
    27. "- What's the attraction, Quinn? This sick infatuation with the Joker?" Batman: TES, episode "Harliquinade"

I honestly can't understand what people find in all the grimdark stories. Ponies and grimdark - it's like oil and water.

I like pickles and I like chocolate, but I don't dip pickles in chocolate hoping it would be twice the fun. It would just make bathroom time twice as long.

How on Earth doing basically the same thing somehow seems to work out for some bronies - I have no idea.

I am in no way complaining, and I am aware that I can just "don't read it if you don't like it" (guess what I am NOT doing a lot, these days, when basically HALF of story updates is either grimdark or crossover) - I just honestly. Don't. Get it.

      VastaKustuta
    28. @wackyteen

It'll take you a while, but it's so worth it. That fic is seriously the best thing to happen to this fandom. Next to Fluttershy.

Heck, took me nearly a day alone to read the first 22ish chapters, and 4 hours straight for Ch38 I think.

      VastaKustuta
    29. I side with german. It's my native language (along with english) and I once heard a german-teacher say "If it sounds like you're angry, you're pronouncing it right."

Needless to say, he was right.

      VastaKustuta
    30. @unity-at Hahaha, oh man, that's funny, glad I'm not the only one tat thinks sounding angry is a requirement to speak German!

      VastaKustuta
    31. I haven't read the fanfic, but this video is pretty cool for sure. Definately has a little of that... "Russian feel" I can't really describe too.

And I see we are having a little debate about languages and which sounds the best. lol For some reason, when people started pitting German and Russian against eachother, I simply started thinking of Russia and Germany from Hetalia talking to eachother. Hah. Well, I'm German and I do love my language. Though I think Russian sounds pretty awesome too. I'll stick with my own language and say Russian has got to be one of the coolest-sounding too. :)

      VastaKustuta
    33. @Delichon

As much as I agree... I will openly admit that some of them are well written.

The fact is that when it comes to Grimdark fanfiction there are two different ways to look at it. There are those that like to see the ponies thrust into the darkest and bleakest of situations to see how they might grow and react and change as characters... and then there are those who prefer the light, cheery material similar to the show itself, most likely because they find happiness in it. These two schools rarely mix. And quite often when they try to, it all comes down to trading insults. (I have a feeling one user in particular is going to take arms to your statement here.)

I don't think that Grimdark and MLP mix well save for certain situations, though I will openly admit that Fallout: Equestria is well written. Damn well written. I only read a couple chapters before I decided I didn't like it simply on a fundamental and content basis, but I couldn't deny that it was very well written.

Personally? I like seeing characters get thrust into dark situations and bleak times, but only if everybody comes out alright in the end. I like the idea that they will be able to get through the darkest of times and still come out the same as they are, probably even better for it. It's why Silent Ponyville is one of my favorite MLP fics ever.

But most grimdark fics don't do that, and Fallout Equestria is no exception.

And since that is the case, I too am feeling particularly upset by the newfound prevalence of Grimdark updates.

But this is beside the point. The point is that bleak situations tend to make for really good drama and character building and a fair amount of bronies like seeing that. It's not that they think that "this is how Equestria SHOULD be." It's "What if this happened?"

Do you read Marvel comics? Well it's sorta like Marvel's What-If series, where they change a single significant, or sometimes even really minor event that happened in the Marvel universe at some point and it often changes the WHOLE continuity through the butterfly effect. Sometimes it's for the better, but usually it ends up being MUCH darker. But it's interesting to see how just a few changes or darker turns can change a character and make them develop entirely differently. Most people would agree that they wouldn't want to see the actual comics continuity end up like this, but it can be interesting for short ventures into a slightly darker version of our world.

So that's what it is. Neither school of thought is "wrong" per se. The side that likes cheerful stories finds happiness in ponies and likes to see fun stories that just expand a little on the actual show, and the grimdark readers prefer developing character and drama. And you can certainly develop character without going grimdark (I would assume that both schools like those stories) but grimdark is where they sorta divide.

I don't read grimdark usually. I usually don't like it. But I don't think that "Grimdark shouldn't exist" or anything. It makes sense that it does since different people want to see different things come of a story. My only complaint right NOW is just how many seem to be cropping up everywhere, to the point they seem to be overshadowing a lot of the happier stuff.

      VastaKustuta
    34. @lordalexander74

THAT'S a matter of opinion. It sure as hell is well written but a good half of bronies would probably disagree with you.

You keep saying things like that it could easily come back to bite you.

      VastaKustuta
    35. If someone translates it, i'll do the voiceover and put it together.

      VastaKustuta
    36. Yeah, it was pretty decent. I'd say it was a good fan animation.

And to be honest, if I found a Fallout fanfiction as fantastic as Fallout:Equestria, I'd read that too. Just because it involves ponies doesn't mean anything. Still incredibly well wrote.

I believe it is a Russian translation of this:

Well there's a few shades of darkness, really. There's some stories where awful things happen for seemingly no reason and it's just an author's excuse to stick the ponies into Saw or something. And then there's others, like Fallout: Equestria, which is very grim and dark (more so then Fallout itself), but there's something worth fighting for. Hope at the end of a dark tunnel, and a damn good reason to keep pressing on.

To quote the famous author Kurt Vonnegut.. "No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them - in order that the reader may see what they are made of.". Why do a lot of people tend to like Batman so much? 'Cause he goes through awful things, but still manages to win. But those victories often come with a price attached as well. A hero who wins all the time, or at no penalty quickly gets boring, and worst of all, seems less heroic.

Lots of other reasons, but uh, basically that's why.

      VastaKustuta
    42. the only word I understood was holocaust

      VastaKustuta
    43. Need's to be about 20% more Ron Perlman.

    44. @Dusty the Royal Janitor

"There are those that like to see the ponies thrust into the darkest and bleakest of situations to see how they might grow and react and change as characters..."

I can totally get behind this idea. One thing though - as long as we are talking about actual characters I have seen a particular show character perform in the under lightly stressful conditions in the show proper and I want to see if the author of the fanfic can realistically project the same character in the grimdark conditions. To be clearer: one of the recent fanfics with Mane 6 coping with RBs suicide attempt - I actually liked it (not without reservations, but still) I know how Rainbow copes with losing a horseshoo throwing competition (see Fallweather Friends) - no I want to see how the same Rainbow Dash copes with her dream being shattered. Oh, so she jumps from a cloud? Well, I can roughly see that. Now let's see how the rest of the Mane 6 reacts.
A stretch, but not a big one.

You can obviously spot the catch here: this arguement does not hold for OCs. OC ponies have no characters in the show (because they don't feature in the show) - thus there is no projection of an already established character into grimdark conditions thus there is no point of writing a pony grimdark story.
Unless you just always wanted to write a story about a certain character reacting to a certain condition - and MLP: FiM fanbase is as good audience as any for that purpose.

Same as you, I am not the one screaming "There should be no grimdark" I even understand the appeal of applying grimdark to learn new things about the characters of the show - it it done properly of course.

It's just that most of the time I see exactly what I've described - people a mixing two things just because they like each of them individually on their own. Pickles in chocolate.
OR they do it because of something you described - because grimdark is a strong emotional stimulant. And for some writers this is the only way to squeeze an emotional response from the reader. "Feel something! Feel something, damn reader! Don't want to? Ok, than Fluttershy breaks a wing! Ha, you are feeling something now!"

I just don't know. I see the number of well-drawn ask blogs increase steadily, but every new one is about some other "dark and edgy" take on an established character. I see more and more pony art going into "rule 34" and "OMGWTF rule 34" area. I see steady increase in Grimdark fanfiction.

It feels like some animation version of Frank Miller launched a cladestine project to deconstruct the MLP: FiM through several dozens of anonimous contributors. Like F. Miller himself did with his comics to the superhero genre.

But more likely it probably just shows us what people always wanted to see. We fooled ourselves long enough that people want to see character development and friendship, and now Internet is telling us "Quit being silly and go get your daily fix of gore and mechanical, thoughtless sex"

Or maybe I am just rambling.

      VastaKustuta
    45. Amazing! I am honored and humbled. This is just... wow.

As for translation: it's the introduction to Fallout: Equestria as Strannik has provided above.

      @Dusty the Royal Janitor

Thank you for the kind words. (And, for what it's worth, the quality of the writing improves significantly after those first chapters thanks to a combination of proofreaders and my knowing that I have an audience and my desire to do right by them.)

And you are correct that in Fallout: Equestria not everypony gets through the darkness, much less intact. But there is a light at the end, and those who do make it through will be stronger and better for it.

For those who want to hear this in English, try the introduction reading by Atticus:

PS: Any chance there will be bronies at SteamCon this weekend?

      VastaKustuta
    46. I don't care for grimdark most of the time, but Fallout Equestria does it right. Awesome characters that get tied into the world from the show in clever ways, and even though it there are plenty of dark themes, there's also a lot of magic and friendship.

      Also: @aramaru
Kurt Vonnegut can go and play hide and go buck himself. The writers of My Little Pony were able to say "We're going to make an episode about sewing dresses and its going to be awesome!" and it was awesome. They didn't gave to make it darker and edgier™ in order for it to be good.

As counter-point for Vonnegut, who I'm really starting to get sick of, I will leave with a quote from Abraham Lincoln. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

      VastaKustuta
    47. @Jelfes I have to disagree with you there sir. Although I do speak Ukrainian and I am able to make out what is being said in this film. Is pretty cool.

      VastaKustuta
    48. @Raven
Pony Dweller + original soundtrack + original vintage presentation = genius.

Really, all of you reading this that still haven't played FO1 and FO2: get on to it! NOW!
...um... if you feel like it, of course.

      VastaKustuta
    49. @Delichon

      For what it's worth:

I can understand where the assumption that the idea you can "totally get behind" is not applicable to Fallout: Equestria. If somebrony has only read the first few chapters, or has only looked at the tags, then the story would appear to be merely the tale of an OC pony in a post-apocalypse.

As bronies who have read Fallout: Equestria will tell you, this is not the case. There is a much larger story being told here, and it is the story of Equestria itself "thrust into the darkest and bleakest of situations".

You will see the characters you love from the show itself, watch how they react and grow and change in response to Equestria at war. How they fall, fair, strive to pick themselves back up again... and ultimately how their efforts leave behind the very tools of hope that the characters of the present may be able to use to bring light to the darkness.

And more, you will see how the different elements of Equestria beyond the Mane Six endured or failed to, and the imprints that were left because of them.

I do have a great love and keen understanding of the characters in our beloved show, and I really do try to do right by them and to apply grimdark "properly".

Whether or not I succeed is something only the individual reader may judge. Your enjoyment may vary.

      VastaKustuta
    50. @Kkat

Please ignore the "where" before "the assumption"... and I really wish there was a way to edit these comments.

      VastaKustuta
    55. I don't get what's the big problem with OCs.
Although the Mane 6 are a very varied bunch, the ability to add a new variant/character and/or use of MLP:FIM world/canon to tell a completely parallel tale has generated some of the best fanfics around here.

      VastaKustuta
    56. @Delichon
I share your dismay at the increase in signal to noise ratio in fan works between the rule 34 and gore noise that I don't care for and the friendship and magic signal that I'm listening for, however I think it is more a case of the show and its surrounding internet culture's growing audience rather than a decrease in the number of bronies who are interested in the latter.

I still see plenty of nice work on a regular basis, even if I have to sort through more chaff nowadays.

On the topic of OCs, the characters in MLP are someone's original characters. They're probably the easiest way to tie a fan work into the show, but they're not the only thing the show is about. I think OC characters can work quite well when the fan work is touching on other themes that are central to the show. Many of my favorite fan comics involve Ditzy Doo and Dinky in heartwarming moments.

I probably would have never read Fallout Equestria had it not been for the repeated insistence of a good friend, but I'm glad I did.

      Also: @youronlinesniper
I'm afraid you are all mistaken. Hawaiian is the coolest language of all time. :P

      VastaKustuta
    57. Why would you make it in Russian ;_;

      VastaKustuta
    58. Can't beat Perlman's sexy, sexy narration of anything Fallout related.

But this is good too. Nice to see Kkat getting some love from the international community.

Now if only someone would post this in a language I understand... and get Ron Perlman to read it for us...

      VastaKustuta
    59. Also, I love my Russian Bronies. Anyone who makes stuff like this and graffiti tags Rainbow Dash onto buildings can't be bad at all.

      VastaKustuta

      VastaKustuta
    61. Mhmmmmmmmmm PowerPoint..... The pictures are nice. Kind of disappointing for an "Animation" trailer

      VastaKustuta
    62. @Delichon

I think I can sorta see what you're saying. The questions are "why do bronies flock to things that are only an author's attempt to mash two things he likes together?" and "Why bother with OC stories in a fanfiction when the purpose is to see these established characters expand."

Well, for one, I really can't answer. I guess we just like to mix two things together and see if we get peanut butter and chocolate rather than pickles and chocolate. In some cases it works. More than likely, though, the quality is less dependent upon the two subjects in question than it is how clever the author is. For example, if I may mention Silent Ponyville again, nobody would ever expect these two things to go together well, and yet the story not only creates a damn good Silent Hill atmosphere and sense of terror, but it allows up to learn about things established in the show and expands Pinkie Pie's character to new heights. It really did go together very well.

And it actually is a viable storytelling method to take two unrelated elements, mash them together and see what you get. A good example? "What would I get if I took a standard fantasy plot and put it in space?" The Answer? Star Wars" A New Hope. Some of the best stories come about this way. So just pointing a finger at the "I like these two things, let's mash them together" motif isn't really the issue. It comes down more to how well it's executed.

As for OC's well... mostly I agree. It's true, when I read fanfiction I want to learn more about the characters I already know and am already invested in and see how they will deal with new challenges. But one thing you must remember is that... I guess I'd say the WORLD is a character too. Equestria in itself is a character. So if you have a really OC based story it may be more inclined towards expanding the world beyond just Ponyville and a bit of Canterlot and Appleoosa. And you know what? Sometimes that can be really great. In Fallout Equestria's case I would guess that is has to do with looking into how this world has changed and how it is going to continue after such a horrible disaster. True, all of the characters we know are dead... they probably died horribly (I don't know I only read two chapters before deciding it wasn't to my tastes), but I realize that it probably is meant to expand upon this world and how the remaining denizens, realizing that this is a different world with different cultures, values, and philosophies, will go on after a nuclear holocaust. In that sense I have to respect FO:E because it is a HUGE undertaking. Way more than I know I could handle.

That being said, yeah I agree with you. Often people mix things and it doesn't work. For some reason a lot of people flock to even the ones that I really don't think work. I know that I though Death Note Equestria was at the very LEAST dubious in its material and execution and yet it was lauded. But you're right. We keep having more and more creepy/dark ask blogs made and we keep having more and more grimdark put out and HONESTLY I hope this is just a temporary trend, otherwise the two schools of brony (the light, happy, and comedic vs. the grimdark and character observers) are going to tear asunder.

      VastaKustuta
    63. @Kkat

You're welcome. You really ought to be proud of yourself. Whether it's my scene or not, you really are a good writer.

From what I've heard I understand this, but it's just not my scene. I've never enjoyed most apocalyptic scenarios in the first place. I prefer to focus on the brighter things in life. Dark things are a real sometimes food with me.

      VastaKustuta
    64. @Kkat

I'll say, it's like no other story I have read. Save one from a book. It's really a shame you can't publish it. As I'm sure everyone who is waiting for the next chapter would buy it in a heart beat. It has also inspired me to try and do some writing as well. 3 chapters in, here's hoping I can get to the finish.

      VastaKustuta

    67. While I wouldn't presume to tell anypony what to do, were I to suggest Fallout Equestria to a friend, I might suggest that they at least read on through chapter 5. There are some events that take place near the end of chapter 4 that set a tone for the story which carries on through much of the first half.

Has anyone even asked Ron Perlman if he would read the introduction chapter for us? It couldn't hurt to ask :)

    70. Am I the only person who's realised the video has closed captions in english that you can enable, so you don't have to fuss with translations, listening to other audio versions or referring to the original prologue text?

It's only cool when the Medic speaks it, and that's a fictional character. Everyone else who speaks it sounds like they suck a dozen dicks. I'd get my ass handed to me by a German because I just can't take them seriously because of how gay they sound.

So... you're saying it's pretty much like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, then? Just try the first five and you will really know if it's for you?

I... er, I guess I'm not sure. The first episode of MLP I watched was Feeling Pinkie Keen, after which point I got into a long debate with someone about whether Pinkie Sense was a metaphor for religious faith or verifiable scientific predictions. After which I was compelled to watch the rest of them.

If anything, I would say it is more like reading the Lord of the Rings. I have a friend who was never able to get past the chapters regarding Bilbo's Party because, in his words "there's, like, three whole pages where they're talking about how great pipe weed is."

I'm not trying to suggest that anyone is wrong to not like the story. I guess there's a few different ways that my comment could be taken, but I meant it in the least offensive way possible. Its just that the lack of friendship at the beginning of the story was noticeable, even though I realize that it made the eventual acquisition of friends that much more poignant. I guess maybe I shouldn't suggest anything because that might create expectations that wouldn't match with reality.

He would hate the Earths Children series of books, pages upon pages of descriptions of stuff like tree bark. And if they start preparing a meal, just skip ahead ten pages unless you want to learn everything there is to know on how cavemen prepared their food :) Still, a wonderful series of books.

    75. Also: I have to agree that grimdark is rarely good unless it has a hopeful ending. This is why I hated the recent version of Battlestar Galactica: humanity started out screwed and was slowly revealed over time to be COMPLETELY screwed, with no chance to get themselves out of it. Plus Starbuck was a chick.

My own take on FO:E, like KKat's, is planned for a good ending --- but of course, one's idea of "good" might be a little relative...

You're probably right about that. I think different people just have either different tolerance levels, or are more or less pressed for time. When I sit down to read something, I usually sink an evening into it, which has caused me to -on occasion- get halfway through a book before I realize that I don't want to finish it.

meh, I think the bigger problem was that the Battlestar remake's ending sucked. I mean you're forgetting that at the very beginning of the series, humanity's population goes from 50 billion to 55,000. So unless they find The Dragonballs or something, they were ALWAYS screwed.

If anything, the ending was too hopeful, what with the pseudo mystical shit (Ooh, Starbuck is an angel! Or not! Or a Cylon! Or who knows! And she disappears w/ no explanation! That's DEEP, yo!) and the Deus Ex stumbling onto IRL Earth (a Bob Dylan song is like, the universe's MacGuffin, yo!) and the "omg your Roomba's gonna kill you" montage at the end (GET THE TOTALLY DEEP SUBTEXT WE'RE WEAVING HERE HUH HUH, MACHINES WILL RISE AGAINST MAN, YO!) etc.
