This is an article from "The Oregonian" in, you guessed it, Oregon. It's actually really positive for the most part, which is surprising considering how often we get ripped apart by the media. They interviewed a whole bunch of people, but I'll let you read it for that information.
Thanks to Nathan for the scans.

ReplyDeleteI remember seeing that distinct hat across the ponynet
ReplyDeletefir... shit
ReplyDeleteI made sure to check the size of the pillows before purchase. They are apparently 18''. That's only a foot and a half. Got the plushies instead :D

ReplyDeleteNo wonder Mom declared "You're a Brony!" when she walked downstairs today while I was watching the episode...
ReplyDeletei thought everyone already knew we liked ponies.
ReplyDeleteI did a double take at the end of the second page. That's some unfortunate hyphenation!
ReplyDelete"pins, posters and large fig-
urine collections."
Wow, this was... really positive and well-written. My hat is off to you, Kelly! Great write-up! :)
ReplyDeleteMore exposure! MORE EXPOSURE!
ReplyDeleteThe world shall tremble!
No, that Dude does not have enough pony lol j/k.
ReplyDeleteWHOO! First post here on EQD.
ReplyDeleteAnd this was awesome. I'm amazed at how much exposure EQD gets in the newspaper media, magazines, etc.

ReplyDeleteThat was one of the most neutral-to-positive mass media reports yet. I applaud The Oregonian for actually researching the story and interviewing both Seth and Jayson. Well done.

ReplyDelete>WAY TOO MUCH PONY
ReplyDeleteWat is?
@ThemsAllTook
ReplyDeleteAlso, if may stray off-topic, I invite all Oregon bronies to come visit FrightTown when it starts its run in October. I'll scare the crap out of you in The Black Box (don't bring the kids, though - trust me.) http://www.frighttown.com
EDIT: There really needs to be a way to edit individual comments after posting them...
EDIT EDIT: *sigh*...
people are still surprised about this? its been a good solid year.
ReplyDeleteOf course they would take my fluttershy comment and not something more intelligent. But I am the rock climber as well so I guess I contributed something more to it.
ReplyDelete(Psh who am I kidding fluttershy being the best is plenty sophisticated)
"The Oregonian" reminds me of "Argonian" which reminds me of Oblivion.
ReplyDelete@TheSharp0ne 500,000 page views PER DAY is quite unprecedented for fansite of a show that is less than a year old.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Lauren Faust, Hasbro execs, and Hub animators all stated they often visit EqD. So yea, word gets around ^_^
The third paragraph mentions the 'nationwide' contingent... I have a problem with that.
ReplyDeleteAs a brony from way down here in Chile, I feel that the correct word is 'Worldwide', as this fandom exceeds the geographical limits of a single country.
Well, I'm glad that for once there's a RL article/mention of us that isn't just straight up mocking the whole idea of a Brony.
ReplyDeleteYAY now the pony network is not that un-known anymore
ReplyDeleteSo Seth lives in Arizonna…
ReplyDeleteSorry, had to be creepy to see what others would say. I assure you, I don't really want to know where any of you actually live.
First time someone didnt mention those god awful movie trailers with ponies.
ReplyDeleteTired of hearing about how its so awesome -.-
also, I just now realized that "Seth" isn't actually his real name.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have him as a character in a fic...
should I replace all of em?
Sethisto this is YOUR image here, what do you have to say?
>mfw they didn't use my interview at all in the article
ReplyDeleteokay.jpg
Yay, Oregon! Loving and tolerating the Bronies. :D Sometimes, I kinda like living here.
ReplyDeleteAh, finally one that wasn't insulting. It didn't try to sneak in a "subtle" negative comment like the other two I've seen.
ReplyDelete@NDupree93
ReplyDelete>also, I just now realized that "Seth" isn't actually his real name.
You are now aware that his last name is Scotellaro, and will now envision him your mind as Scootaloo/a chicken/dodo/random flightless bird...
FOREVER!
"too much pony"???? NONSENSE!!! you can never have "too much" pony, what blasphemy is that, how can anyone even suppose such a monstrosity.
ReplyDeletehad to be done
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ponychan.net/chan/oat/res/36786231.html
I dont even have to read the article to assume these news agencies only pick the most fringe/diehard individuals to represent the majority, that guy seems weird even to me.
ReplyDeleteSo, 'no one man should have all that pony?'
ReplyDeleteThat guy's t-shirt is playing the evil 'lol wonky neck' game that t-shirts always play on me.
ReplyDeleteMeh, it will probably bash us for liking My Little Po-
ReplyDeleteHOLY SHIT
ITS AN NEUTRAL AND POSITIVE ARTICLE ABOUT US
/)^3^(\ SO AWESOME
Wait, are there really more then 4 Million f us, or did I misread?
ReplyDeleteOf us*.
ReplyDeleteDarned keyboard...
the article is win, but I feel they could've dug up that 'brony' came from '/b/rony'...
ReplyDeleteAlso whatever happened to '/co/lts'?
@Select Few
ReplyDeleteI don't think anybody's got an exact number on Bronies right now. There was an average of 4 million viewers, and I imagine a large chunk of it was bronies, but as hard as it is to imagine, KIDS watch this show too.
...that sounds weird to say. It's like we've come full circle.

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see a neutral-to-positive article, don't get me wrong, but does anyone else think they have the story backwards? That it shouldn't be "Wow, grown men (and women) like a little girl's show", but "Wow, there's a little girl's show good enough to attract fans among grown men and women"?
ReplyDelete"/b/rony"? I thought it was a portmanteau of "bro" and "pony".
ReplyDeletelol more bronies than pony's! But we all knew that amiright bronies? Fluttershy FTW!
ReplyDeleteI discover FiM through 4chan's /b/, so I felt that brony was derived from /b/rony, meaning "/b/ros who watch pony".
ReplyDeleteOf course, I'm likely wrong. I joined the fandom a few weeks before the pony wars in February, so chances are brony may have been coined elsewhere.
HEY SETH! QUESTION! Is there a way to setup a view option for the site? as much as I LOVE waiting ages for the ONE PIC of a full set of draw friend stuff I click on to load after all the OTHER ONES I'd like to just idk see the one I clicked to load first then wait 20-30 seconds to view what I clicked on. Just saying this new view port thing NEEDS SOME TWEAKING AT THE VERY LEAST!
ReplyDeleteit wasn't so bad with this post since there was just 3 images but the fact it took 12 seconds to view the one I clicked on was really annoying
@Mike
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't come from 4chan I'm pretty sure that isn't true. If "brony" originated from "/b/" the term would have been "/b/ony". "Brony" can only be a combination of "Bro" and "Pony" and /b/rony is merely a play on the already created word brony.
"Ignoring the fact that they're ponies..."
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell would we do that? A huge part of their appeal is their adorableness.
Normally I cringe at how they describe it in these web/newspaper stories, but that was actually a really good article.
ReplyDelete@Mike I like the way they put it more than any others I've seen. "Who knows" makes it so much better.
ReplyDelete@Select Few
ReplyDeleteA safe number is to say over 9,000 (no, I'm not messing with you.)
The poll on EqD with the highest amount of participants has over 9,000 votes.
Alternatively, the largest Facebook "Bronies" group has over 9,000 members (9,804 as of now.)
The true number is actually higher since I'm not a member of that Facebook group, much like a few others at least, but it's safe to say that totally or somewhat "closeted" Bronies counteract any duplicate or fake accounts to inflate that number.
Ergo, a good guess is over 9,000.
@Cátsy
ReplyDeleteSadly, I think this heinous new picture viewer is Blogger's fault, and there may not be anything Seth can do about it. I've taken to right-clicking* over the image and selecting "View Image in New Tab" or the equivalent.
* -- Technically, in my case it's usually left-clicking, since I normally use the mouse with my left hand...
@BlueJay Chill
ReplyDeleteChilean as well, and i agree completely.
The brony phenomenon right now is too big to be assigned to one nation.
The Equine is a barrier to Entrance, And a cute huggable one at that, It's an extremely well done show that's not very dark, That is a very rare.
ReplyDelete@Verbose IT'S...OVER.......no...not gonna.
ReplyDeleteI like "approximately God knows how many".
@Cátsy
ReplyDeleteIf it takes 30 seconds to load one picture I think you need a new computer.
Seth's email would probably be a better place to contact him about the problem, but I know what may help.
Instead of clicking the image normally, right click it and select 'open link in new tab'. This opens the image in a new tab (for the most part) and bypasses the image viewer. I'll note that I only tried this in firefox and chrome, so I am not sure about other browsers. I'll add another note and say that the 'open image in new tab' option in chrome is sure to open just the image.
Hope that helps.
@A Weary Exile
ReplyDeleteWhat you said right there is an example of what the article touches upon; it is EXTREMELY difficult to pin point the exact reason why so many older fans love this show.
For me, it was the clean comedy, the personalities of the characters, and the songs that made me decide that I was going to make a habit of watching this show. Though nowadays I adore FiM for a broad range of reasons not limited to the cuteness (that amazingly isn't sickly sweet), how I relate with almost all of the characters on some level, and the show's art and visual style.
Then there's the fandom... but that's different.
Scotellaro! Scot-scotellaroooo! xD
ReplyDeleteScotellaro...
ReplyDeleteScootaloo...
*Snicker*.
That's pretty damn funny.
@T-God
ReplyDeleteI admit it, I laughed
/r/ing Scootachicken sitting on a nest that has been built atop the 'box' that Seth is commonly drawn as.
Oh sweet, it's up! I'm the dude who fights zombies and gets raised eyebrows from his friends.
ReplyDeleteWas I the only one who noticed that this article referred to World Of Warcraft as a cartoon?
ReplyDelete"Ignoring the fact that they are colorful ponies"
ReplyDeleteWhy would we ignore that D:
That's one of the reasons I love them
@Zoronii people from oregon can breathe underwater, then?
ReplyDeleteProud to be an Oregonian, I laughed and smiled when I saw this on the Front Page of the Living section :D
ReplyDelete@Cátsy
ReplyDeleteYou can right click open in new window, thats the main way to do it. blogger added some tumblr thing out of nowhere.
wish my town had something like thati think i am the only brony here
ReplyDeleteGee, thanks for erasing the presence of adult women in the fandom AGAIN, media.
ReplyDeleteHmm... The fact that they used a die-hard brony is kinda... Odd. I know there isnt such thing as to much pony, but this makes us look kinda creepy IMO. Haha, but im glad they did there reasearch and didnt include "tea parties and rainbows". I love it when popular news papers, blogs, and people talk about bronies. It bring so many to the heaed ^_^
ReplyDeleteAnyone who likes cartoons will like FiM.
ReplyDelete'Nuff said :3
YAY for us "liquid sunshine" ponys
ReplyDelete"no one single answer as to why its liked"...how about this quite simple answer
its not the dumbed down or over amped cartoon crap that were sick of seeing pumped out faster than anyone even wants to see it..its the flawless balance of art style story and characters all rolled into the perfection noted as MLP-FIM
lol suddenly the keep portland weird bumperstickers need derpy on them!!!!!
Just because you had bought a Rainbow Dash figure at McDonalds and have watched at Youtube the s02e01 episode, it doesn't make you a brony.
ReplyDeleteDoes it?
Oh my God, I'm a closeted brony.
@ThemsAllTook
ReplyDeleteAnd now we know that figs can pee. Nice. Let's toss that into the pile along with Trixie eating pine cones as part of the stranger side of the fandom.
actualy..its more well thought out and eye catching...buut digs into your brain and soul better than EVERY inch of drivel on tv and cable SHORT of movies.....mlp is like a mini movie
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous of his hat8D
ReplyDeleteWell, Oregon and some of its surrounding regions are pretty open-minded, if I remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteFeel free to correct me if I'm wrong in my guessing, though.
@80and56 You're right. Oregon is really awesome for stuff like this.
ReplyDeleteOnce more I shall shamelessly self promote my own essay on why I think people like this show. http://specter-von-baren.deviantart.com/#/d49p2g4
ReplyDelete@80and56
ReplyDeleteYeah, most everywhere in Oregon is quite open-minded, except the town I grew up in. Redneck/white trash capital of Oregon.
But yeah, Oregon is pretty awesome, especially for people like me who also actually enjoy the cloudy, wet, dreary weather we're known for.
I remember this guy asked for advice on what to say on Ponychan, glad to see that everything turned out better that expected.
ReplyDeleteWoot, pony press. And decent pony press too it seems.
ReplyDelete@Filiecs Which guy are you talking about? I only ever asked for advice on /co/ about how to handle it.
ReplyDelete>Japanese anime cartoons
ReplyDeleteasdfasdf I can't stop laughing the redundancy is so hilarious
@floydhead42 I was confused by that. I wonder how many people would like a WoW cartoon.
I've got to admit that I want his stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is why I love being an Oregonian <3
ReplyDeleteHere's to hoping for more neutral to positive press for the fandom in the future. I'm going to be optimistic and cross my fingers that we're looking at the beginning of an upward trend here.
ReplyDeleteStop talking about how awesome Oregon is, guys. You're making me homesick.
ReplyDelete-Marshall, misses damp weather.
What the hell's a "brony"?
ReplyDeleteI want that hat.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI agree, but at this point, I think this is the closest we'll get to positive right now :P
I'm gunna love and tolerate this shit out of this article.
ReplyDeleteholy crap, I live in Portland, OR. why did I not see this in the paper?!?!?!?1
ReplyDeleteTl:dr
ReplyDeleteNice job brony.
"nationwide", "national"
ReplyDeleteBecause the US is the only country in the world that has TVs and computers.
Pink Celestia.
ReplyDeleteThe term originated on /co/, all the way back in October. I remember it like it was yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThe relevant portions of the conversation went like this:
Anonymous1: Thanks, ponybro
Anonymous2: brony
Anonymous3: ... why is that so perfect? I want to hate it, but it's just so perfect..
And we've been stuck with it ever since.
Sometimes, this fandom scares me, this is one of those times (reads article).
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong to be a brony and still think men holding a gazillion toys with a slightly disturbing smile on their face is just a tiiiiiny bit creepy?
ReplyDeleteOh well, at least the article was positive.
Uhh... that third page bugs me. The music isn't just limited to remixes. There are so many GOOD original pony songs inspired by the series.
ReplyDelete@Marshall
ReplyDeleteI miss Oregon too =(
Now I wonder if Philadelphia, PA has a good Brony fanbase or not :)
ReplyDeleteI remember this guy's thread on Ponychan asking for interview advice, glad he listened to what we had to say! Could have done without the "normal things like fighting zombies" or bronyism being a religion, but still well done. And before anyone says anything, I'm not against zombies being normal, Im fully for it, just could have gone without mentioning. That seems to be another thing in our culture that makes people think you're crazy.
ReplyDeleteI hate how damn narrowminded and egocentric American media is. "The nationwide contingent of men who call themselves 'bronies'", "the national brony site equestriadaily.com".
ReplyDeleteHELLO?!? It's an INTERNATIONAL phenomenon! This site is very much INTERNATIONAL!
I was wondering how the reaction to this article would turn out. Very nice, it would seem. And yeah, Kelly was awesome, so was the photographer, he was a pretty cool guy.
ReplyDeleteYes. I am the guy in that picture. With the hat and the ponies. And that's not even HALF of my collection, to quote Carrot Top: "We couldn't fit it all in." ;D
