I have no clue if this is awesome or not, but there is totally electricity arcing around, which by default is cool, so I'm assuming it's something. You can find it after the break!
Yes, the spark is turned on and off about a million times a second and the duty cycle of individual pulses is modulated to cause it to emit sound. They've got the gain up a bit high, so it's distorting.
(The guy who made it) Its a high voltage plasma arc that is modulated to about 29 thousand hertz, and then modulated further to the music I put into it. Like with Lightning, the air is split when the arc forms, which creates sound waves. So the arc being turned on and off at the frequency of the music makes sound. And you get Lighting Flootershy!
@Griallia Actually, not that much Ozone is produces, ozone is produced when the plasma collapses, and seeing as it is a "continuous" arc, there isnt too much of that.
@ShivalWolf It took me 6 months of tweaking to get the circuit right, due to the abnormalities in ferrite cores and made in china electronics(...) it takes a lot of effort to get a working prototype. But i do fully agree on the "dont build one if you havent got experience" part, i can set fire to almost anything with it...
Too bad the recording is poor, because this kind of speaker usually has an awesome quality. ... but don't try this at home if you don't know what you're doing. Seriously. I've set leather on fire with half this voltage (/intensity, Ohm law blah blah) once.
@Fractured its playing all the notes, its just that because I dont have anything to remove the low frequencies, it has to play all the music at once, which plasma speakers arnt good for. So its either a rather scratchy everything or a crystal clear high-frequency tweeter with rather horrible whining for bass...
@Bobbyzero its not playing Ponies, -20% coolness. It doesnt have a Floootershy, another -20% coolness Its not playing an actual song, ANOTHER -20% COOLNESS
I saw a vid years ago that was a set of like 6 of them all setup for different frequency ranges. It sounds soo cool.
I have almost all the parts except the coil in my electronics play time stuff (i love working with micro-controllers). I've never been able to obtain good coils for high voltage stuff.
@ShivalWolf Tesla coils require very precise electronics, try using a flyback transformer instead, here is a link to the circuit i based mine on; http://www.teravolt.org/sparkspeaker1.php if u want any help or info, my email is [email protected] (ps, tesla coils are expensive to make...)
@Bobbyzero Ask yourself, is dancing in lightning cool, or is Dancing in the middle of school to a pony song cool? Ive tried both, and I tell you, the rush you get from the Ponies is about 20% more than when you have 250000 volts flowing through you... Id pick ponies.
Also, im sorry im spamming comments, im just fanatic about ponies and electronics and im stoked hotter than that plasma arc that I got a featured video... We are loneley down here in New Zealand...
@Zirro Ahh well you see now, it takes 20miliamps across your heart to stop it. That arc is EASILY enough volts to get across your heart, but luckily it only runs at approx 10miliamps. So, all it would do, is burn you. And its fun!
Is it supposed to sound like Fluttershy? Is she in the background somewhere? Was she just stuck to this post randomly? Or am I completely oblivious to something?
I built one of these some time ago. A properly built one can sound better then any speaker. The only problem is to produce any bass you need a big arc.

ReplyDeleteAll of my want
ReplyDeleteHah, that's pretty cool. :D
ReplyDeleteAll of my confuse. (and want) But seriously I have no idea whats going on. Is the plasma/electricity making sound?
ReplyDeleteOne piece of the portal we need to get to Equestria has been found! Now to find the rest!
ReplyDeleteIts not hard to build its a modulated tesla coil, You generate the high voltage spark and then modulate it via an amp.
ReplyDeleteLook up on youtube 'singing tesla coil' and the group 'arc attack'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singing_Tesla_coil
Don't build one if you do not have experience in high voltage electronics.
um what is it?

ReplyDeleteThat was strangely relaxing to watch... o_O
ReplyDeleteI had to put my laptop on its side to watch that video. and i didnt even realize what it was untill half way through the video... lol
ReplyDeleteAll my money.

Is it playing all of the notes or just some of them? I didn't think it could replicate voice like that.
ReplyDeleteI love something! Something is my favourite!

ReplyDeleteHere is a 20% cooler example of a "singing tesla coil"
Cool. This reminds me of the time we saw arcattack a few years ago.

ReplyDeleteI see your point, but the dude is dancing in lightning!

ReplyDelete@Mauran Don't worry, we still love you.

ReplyDeleteThis is a completely ridiculous question for such an awesome thing, but I still have to ask: What happens if you touch it while it's active?
@Zirro

ReplyDeletewhats the worst that could happen...
now all you need is a Faraday suit and some florescent tubes and you are set.
ReplyDelete*is assuming this still works like a current and not a torch*

@Pony In Chief
ReplyDeleteIts this song(EVER SO CUTE);
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxoGmVjAsmE
being played through a lightning bolt. Need i tell you more?
Ha that's so cool :)
ReplyDelete@ Mauran
ReplyDeleteNow I know why 'fireflies' didn't sound right...
At 4:30 in this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBx2wkg9nhk
Sharon gives ArcAttack ten seconds to explain how lightning can make music. THEY FAIL!
Rainbow Dash could've explained it in that amount of time easily.
PS Mauran, Kiwi brohoof from a fellow Tesla builder!
I can't stop looking at it....
ReplyDeleteMan. I want lightning speakers!!
And a Fluttershy figure!!
So much want!!!
plasma speakers are 20% cooler then all other speakers but I thought I hear actual Fluttershy, not fan-made song.
ReplyDeleteBut your speaker is cool, no doubt.
Wicked sweet!
ReplyDeletethat picture... can give d'awwwabetes...
ReplyDeletePLASMA
ReplyDeleteWOW...oh my gosh!!!
ReplyDelete@Mauran
ReplyDeleteThe path is clear! Someone must now dance in lightning... to a pony song!
Didn't really understand it, but that was kinda cool.
ReplyDeleteSeen the picture= D'aww smile.
ReplyDeleteHeard the song separately= Goofy smile.
Comebine two plus mesmerizing dancing arc= Manly tears shed.
Fluttershy would never get that close to a plasma coil. 0.o
ReplyDeleteI have the strangest erection...
ReplyDeleteThe picture...
ReplyDeleteIt looks, SO DAMN REAL!
@Smayds
ReplyDeleteHit me up an email bro! MORE HIGH VOLTAGE POWER TO EARTH!

ReplyDeletenow if only he could play a good pony song with it...fucking hate Owl City
ReplyDeleteplasma speakers are friggin awesome.
ReplyDeleteImpressive to know this is basically thunder.
ReplyDeleteMind= Blown
@Namefag Anon it is a pony song... Its Ilysabeths's 20% cooler remix of the Fireflies parody "Fluttershy's", read the description please.
ReplyDeleteFIREFLIES!!!
